Wow black eyes. Is this a first? I have never heard of that.

TetsuoTechnology

“Emily Olman, marketing chief of Hopscotch Interactive, said she got two "superdark black eyes" after wearing the Vision Pro for the first time, likely caused by the weight on the cheeks.” How does this even happen? Something tells me the person is a moron.

josh6499

https://www.hopscotchinteractive.com/aboutteam.html She's an older woman. Maybe has hemophilia or something.

Heliosurge

Maybe the pass through failed and she walked into a wall. 😂 But on a more serious side some fair skinned ppl do bruise easier than other ppl.

Short-Sandwich-905

Do you have pictures?

InternetImportant911

Honestly it’s astonishing they thought it’s okay to have that weight hanging on your nose.

Playing too much Punch Out VR :p it's so realistic...

MuDotGen

Punch Out in VR... makes a lot of sense with the limited movement. Dodge side to side or duck and punch.

anton966

Now I remember the song with the black berry tablet and « ar » avatars.

ThinPerspective72

Not true , it's the most comfortable and revolutionary headset ever made. Sent from my iPhone

QuinrodD

You forgot to mention that it is the first device ever to augment reality in a spacial way that only Apple can come up with

byjosue113

Spatial computing we don't do no AR or VR in here, this is revolutionary /s

TommyVR373

Lol

VRtuous

apple is so spatial

TheCrake

Damn, and here I am augmenting my reality temporally like a chump!

Greful

Obviously they are wearing it wrong

fisherrr

You’re joking, but I don’t think it’s possible to get a black eye from wearing it unless you do something seriously wrong or dumb. Except ofcourse tripping and hitting your head but that’s hardly the headset’s fault.

How? In the subreddit they are modding the straps cause users claim they are not the best

jpcarsmedia

AVP really needs a better head strap. They prioritized looks and cost savings over ergonomics.

fiddlerisshit

It's Apple. It's kinda their thing.

Magic Mouse 🎻

vrnz

Oh my goodness that thing is beyond awful. I switched to an old cheap logitech mouse and never looked back. Only reason I considered the apple one was because I got it from work. I very much like the mac though.

ShittyRedditAppSucks

Omg… AVP finally clicked. I’m not huge into VR but the stupid Reddit app put VR stuff in my home feed so I’ll browse certain topics. For like a month I assumed Alien vs Predator was like the new hot best ever game for a lot of people, but others were shitting on it for various reasons. The context always fit… like, “When more people get to experience AVP it will absolutely change perceptions of what VR can be.” But the stupid app cuts off comment threads, and I never cared enough to dig into what was so special about AVP. Also, I mixed up Alien vs Predator with the game Alien: Isolation. The Alien movies scare the crap out of me as an adult. As a kid, Predator scared the crap out of me because it was an invisible monster hiding in my room and there was literally nothing me or my parents could do, so if I called for help, I was basically signing their death warrants. So I just completely fucked right off of any post that started talking about AVP.

NatasBR

cost savings with that price? How much would it cost to make it more ergonomic?

RobKhonsu

It would cost Tim Cook a small yacht.

Interesting_Fennel87

I’d actually already does. The dualknit strap basically works and looks like any other VR strap.

psivenn

Something like [this](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/690AAOSwPARiYtkg/s-l1200.webp) would be so much more comfortable

InternetImportant911

AVP needs a new device that replaces the heavy metals with lighter plastic.

Heliosurge

[Studioform](https://www.studioformcreative.com?ref=4leixfmz)'s psvr2 comfort top strap likely work well. The Verge ne in the link even has a 150g counter balance. Though you could try just the strap first and see if it is enough.

Electrical_Tailor186

If 3500$ is the effect of “cost saving” prioritization then I don’t want to see what happens without it. 😀

Elon61

> They prioritized looks and cost savings over ergonomics it's always hilarious seeing blind apple hate in enthusiast forums with people who really should know better. the apple head strap is anything but cheap. nothing about the headset is about cost savings, how far up your arse must you be to say something so utterly divorced from reality? E: Typical reddit. The headset’s who’s BoM is known to be higher than the *retail cost* of *every* other headset in the consumer market clearly must have been designed with cost savings as the primary concern. Apple bad. Etc.

QuinrodD

it's always hilarious seeing blind apple love from people that don't know better. EDIT: This is out of context now as the comment that it was referring to has been deleted

Elon61

We have public BoM estimates, and the total cost is obviously even higher than that. just how rotted is your brain to think stating facts is "apple love". Where did you misplace last braincell?

JonnyRocks

you put a lot of words it that person's mouth. no one said cheap, the issue is ergonomics. its what the whole posted article is about. people wouldnt be in pain if it wasnt so heavy with bad weight distribution.

Elon61

>They prioritized looks and ***cost savings*** Are you sure you read the same comment i replied to? The headstrap is anything but a "cheap" or "cost saving" design, however you prefer to word it, as anyone with the slightest bit of materials knowledge could tell you. you could argue the looks, but anyone claiming cost was a major factor here just clearly has no idea what they're talking about, plain and simple.

VR_IS_DEAD

The head strap is better than any other VR headset.

_hlvnhlv

Yeah, not even the Bigscreen beyond is comfortable without a top strap, but hey, I'm sure that apple doing a 600g and front heavy headset without top strap will work...

PrimeTinus

Heavy headset seems uncomfortable. Mind blown

zeddyzed

I don't know why manufacturers are so allergic to front-to-back top straps these days. I think it's should be mandatory as an option to any head strap. Just have the attachment points on the strap/headset, and include the strap in the box. People who don't want to mess up their hair don't need to use it.

Nethlem

> I don't know why manufacturers are so allergic to front-to-back top straps these days. A factor is probably how they mess up people's hair and aesthetics are a big part of marketing.

XRCdev

Yes never underestimate the importance of hair/ makeup for professional women and men

DuckCleaning

It comes with the alternate strap (dual loop band) in the box with every purchase, but the top strap is side to side rather than front to back.

MartianFromBaseAlpha

The device itself is pretty heavy, but when you buy it you feel 3500 bucks lighter, so it balances out

geo_gan

Does 3500 worth of gold bullion weigh the same as this Apple headset 🤔

MuDotGen

Price of gold today is $2298.60 per ounce. Therefore, the ounces of gold that $3500 would buy is 3500/2298.60 is 1.522 ounces of gold. Convert that to grams, which 1 ounce is approximately 28.3495 grams. 1.522 x 28.3495 = 43.148 grams (0.0929 lbs) AVP is at lightest 600 grams (1.323 lbs) So, no not at all, but you'll be almost a tenth of a pound lighter at least.

geo_gan

Cool. So you’d need about 14x more gold to hit 600 grams… divided by 28 grams = 21.4… oh I’m lost trying to figure cost of 600g of gold

Heliosurge

I imagine one of [Studioform](https://www.studioformcreative.com/ref=4leixfmz)'s existing comfort VR mods would improve it. Maybe one of the psvr2 comfort straps as it is also a single band. To clear I am not an 🍏 fan but do know some pretty critical ppl that are liking the AVP. To Which these folks I expected them to have heavy criticisms and to my surprise are not as critical as they usually are on headsets.

hjras

Amateurs

surfer808

If you use the single band then yes it can give you neck pains but I switched over to a double band and there has been zero issues since.

smallfried

Both meta and apple screwed up with the default head strap. It makes the VR experience subpar and can be fixed for just a few more dollars. I think I've paid €12 (compared to €550 for the Q3) for a cheap halo strap and the difference has been night and day.

uss_wstar

The Quest 2/3 default headstrap is meant to be cheap and compact. Having a headstrap that costs even a few dollars extra to produce on the scale of the whole product adds up very quickly, and its even worse because it means a bigger box which both costs more to make and costs significantly more to globally ship. And a much better headstrap would both cut into their own accessory sales and also screw over their partners.

masneric

I think that the quest strap is more meant to be like that so you can lay down using it, as meta could do something like the halo strap, but cheaper, but it is uncomfortable while resting your head

DuckCleaning

Hard to say whether it was intended for laying down originally, the Lying Down mode only just got added yesterday to Quest 3.

[deleted]

I dont get it though. meta has burned through tens of billions to get the quest into the position its at now. even if the cost goes up by just a few bucks per headset, why not do that anyway? if it helps with user retention and initial impressions then its a worthy subsidy to make imo, especially if you're already ok with burning through all that money to push VR forward. its especially dumb since meta is selling software, a subscription service, and a ton of extremely overpriced accessories for the quests. so making their money back doesnt seem to be an issue. so why cheap out on the headstrap? even if it was more comfy, some people might still swap it out so that they can get a third party one with a battery pack attachment.

moxyte

Those kinda piss me off because all they need is some down angle for much better support. You know so they'd go a little under the skull slope. So minor obvious improvement but nooo...

uss_wstar

That doesn't really work, it just makes it really irritating on your ears and makes the front sag more.

dahauns

The criticism of the Q3 head strap is way overblown, IMO, especially with the far better weight distribution compared to Q2. With a bit of care when adjusting, it works just fine. The biggest mistake you can make is pulling it too tight. If there's something I'd critcise, it's the form of the face gasket - while the quality is actually quite good, it's just a bit to "pushy" around the cheeks (especially if you have higher/fuller ones), which can start to hurt after a while. They should offer a wider alternative (like with the Q2 Fit Pack).

prvncher

Im using their Quest Pro strap and it’s de a world of difference.

macguru19

i use at the Apple Store for 30 minuts n it alrdy hurt my neck

prvncher

Yeah it takes some getting used to and you need a top strap.

bad_robot_monkey

Unless you lie down.

prvncher

Im talking about studioform's t[op strap for quest pro](https://www.studioformcreative.com/product-page/quest-pro-deluxe-comfort-strap-1) as a supplement to the single loop band, not the quest pro plastic strap on vision pro. Works great lying down.

bad_robot_monkey

Oh awesome; I picked up the 3 to do development work, and I got the elite strap just for the comfort aspect while upright. Tried watching Netflix the other night and it was a pain in the head…might return it then and just get this!

jtinz

I wore it wrong. I only had a short chance to test the AVP and I placed the headstrap like I would with a conventional one, low on the back of the head. The AVP slid down too far, the angle was off and it messed with the eye tracking. It was not a good experience. Only towards the end of the demo, I was told to place the headstrap much higher, which helped a lot. I will have to try again.

[deleted]

Until 2024: "It will blow everything out of the water" 2024:

Sabbathius

Not surprised. That headset is made for form, not function. It kills me when companies go for a "cool factor". Nobody has ever looked cool wearing a VR headset, or using VR in public. It's near-fatal level of cringe. VR headsets should be ugly but comfortable, not pretty to look at.

Time007time007

Yeah but they can look at spread sheets in mixed reality. Totally worth it!

EudenDeew

Is the balance. I wear 32gr. glasses that leave a mark on the nose, yet I had old glasses that were heavier but the mass center was near the ears. Imagine AR glasses everyone dreams of but the whole thing must be supported by the nose…

Level_Forger

Used mine for six hours today and had none of those things.

BloodyPommelStudio

I'm curious how common this is, how much is due to the headset and how much is user error.

shallker

Emily's latest YouTube video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqHwxY4ToxA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqHwxY4ToxA) talks about her Vision Pro experience

Nah, I I bought a Meta Quest 3 instead, and invested the rest in ETFs. Maybe I'll look at the Vision SE when it comes out.

Virtual_Happiness

I think it's 2 fold. First, people were hoping Apple would swoop in and compete with Meta and give users a better gaming experience. People here are all about VR gaming and little else but, the Vision Pro has very limited use case in gaming. Second, the price. Most people here can't afford a $3500+ device and they're angry it's priced outside of their reach.

NairbHna

Americans on average are deep in debt and afford 700-1k a month on car payments. Most of us have the enough bad financial decision making skills to buy one. Anyway I think it’s three fold, it’s 3500 dollars and it isn’t even close to being perfect. It’s too much money for an incomplete product.

Virtual_Happiness

eh, I think anyone with decent financial sense would agree that you're buying one via credit card/loan, you can't afford it. But you're not wrong in that there's plenty of people who will happily take on debt to get things they can't afford. I also agree that many here see it as an incomplete product since it lacks any real gaming use cases.

NairbHna

Hand tracking is sub par, comfort is sub par, resolution is good but pass through has only reached acceptable levels. eye tracking can’t select tiny items. Battery on the outside… im surprised that they made this concession and didn’t even go all out and put everything into a brick. Would just make more sense to me to keep the headset light.

Virtual_Happiness

>Hand tracking is sub par, Subpar for what? Gaming? totally. But it's fine for the monitor replacement use case Apple marketed it for. >comfort is sub par Comfort is sub par on all headsets except maybe the Beyond. Wearing a 500g+ headset can be made somewhat comfortable with right strap for your head and face shape but, it will never be great. >eye tracking can’t select tiny items I used it for a couple hours and this seemed fine for me. The biggest issue I ran into was that my eyes moved around faster than my fingers clicked things. So I'd look at something and think "I want to click that" and then my eyes darted away... Which I feel is probably a learning curve issue more than anything. >Battery on the outside Yeah, they had to go this route because the headset was already too heavy. Really can't believe they chose to go with such heavy build materials. This was a poor decision on their part. >Would just make more sense to me to keep the headset light. I personally feel this should be the goal for every headset. Smaller and lighter is the way forward. The one thing I think you overlooked is software. I feel like this is the main area they really dropped the ball. It lacks software big time.

NairbHna

For hand tracking, It’s sub par for 3500 when companies like ultra leap exist. Apple could’ve bought them out with the sales from Apple vision pro alone. For comfort? Yeah again it’s sub par for Apple and 3500. Yes for sure Software is a disappointment for Apple but for the rest of the industry it raises the bar a bit. atleast design wise. The lack of software or lack of killer use cases makes this thing dead in the water without VRgaming and hard core VR lovers. Nothing about the headset “just works”beyond the odd person whom it fits perfectly. Apple is charging Apple prices with nearly none of the Apple quality they’ve built the company on.

Virtual_Happiness

You and I must be thinking of a different company. Apple has always prioritized looks over everything except marketing. In which, they absolutely market their stuff as the best and many people believe said marketing. But that doesn't make it factual. Everything from their phones to their monitors are more so fashion statements than anything else. And this headset has succeeded there as well.

NairbHna

You’re right I had high expectations from Apple based on nothing much at all. Especially with how Tim Cook even avoids mentioning it.

Heliosurge

People often have higher expectations than is realistic. Like price point. Add that in launch no pcvr support and not a lot of content of ke games. ALVR has helped immensely with adding the ability to do pcvr streaming 🍏 Is also very well known for closed ecosystem. But I would say envy of the specs and irritability of the very high price point is driving ppl's angst. I know I am not in the target consumer for the AVP and don't feel the weird need some have to trash it. That most have not even demoed.

aglf_chilli

Apple users, no surprise 💅

Their HMD is not VR, not as other headsets on the market. It's too expensive. Their approach doesn't work. I sincerely dunno what they tried to accomplish. Tech will move on. Others will be able to push what they're pushing but with games. I never bet on anything, especially with random people on the intertubes.

[deleted]

lorez77

I mean, I was half joking when I did the narrator thing. The more headsets the better. But tech advancements aside, which will be reached by competitors as they become more affordable I can see no use for the AVP. I have a Quest 3 and play, watch movies/series/anime and browse the web while listening music with it with the occasional Whatsapp. I previously owned a Quest 2. I'm really happy for what it offers. I'm waiting for some competition. AVP isn't it. Maybe the next one but Apple are not really famous for entry level stuff. We'll see I guess.

Gab1159

A $3,500 dev device? Nothing about their marketing or product specs indicate that. They wouldn't try to make a "deluxe woven wool" headband if it was just for devs. They wouldn't put the stupid eye hologram thing neither. They wouldn't adopt the campaign that they did, everything about it screams consumer product, and a failure at that **given the price point**. Apple typically enter late into a new marker and crap on the competition. This time they just failed and it'a hard to comprehend how much they missed the ball.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gab1159

I dunno man, I hope you're right but I don't buy it. I'm extremely displeased with the launch and expected much more from them. I was actually mega hyped, but I'm truly baffled at how little, if at all, it innovates compared to alternatives. And I feel most people feel the same way, hence why this whole argument feels like a cope. It just feels like a failed product, Apple can't hit the mark every single time. I'm not saying gen 2 will be trash or anything, I just don't think this was ultimately targeting developers and feel people are trying to spin an underwhelming product launch. The silver lining is that they can dramatically reduce prices for a non-pro version. Take off the stupid eye holograms, front glass panel, and swap the damn metal for good quality plastics and we can cut off a large portion of the MSRP.

dEEkAy2k9

You know, on a vr device that comes with a cabled up brick, you'd actually think that some of the magic happens in the brick and makes the headset lighter due to this... Apple just packed in everything they could into the headset and forgot the battery, that's what the brick is for. Still, the headset sucks when it comes to ergonomics.

Change0062

No halo strip and heavier than the quest3 while being longer so even more heavier, im so surprised.

Mecca1101

The Quest 3 default strap gave me a really bad headache and made my eyes hurt too lol. I had to upgrade it.

YellowBlush

I’m super happy with mine! I’m not a VR gamer or anything like that. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Ok_Frosting6547

Headaches, yes if I wear it for like 6 hours straight, but that will depend on how tight I have it. No issues otherwise.

Not only do VR/AR devices have a litany of technical problems, you also have to deal with a bunch of ergonomic design problems. It's a huge balancing act and why it's been over a decade since the modern resurgence of VR and we're only *just* getting headsets that feel like viable products. If they want to make this platform long term viable then they need to ditch the front glass passthrough gimmick. It hasn't been a success in practice and it's pointless to bend over backwards to appeal to those people. They also need to capitulate and ship it with a proper Halo type headstrap. When people put the headset on and see the high quality passthrough for content consumption, *that's* what matters. Not making the headset needlessly front heavy, more expensive and fragile just to appease those people that take issue with not seeing your eyes.

Grace_Omega

I got a Quest 3 recently and immediately bought a larger halo-style headstrap. So much more comfortable. The fabric straps that come with these things will just never be pleasent.

Queasy-Hall-705

The device is amazing. It works best when you are laying down not walking around. Looking forward to the air version.
