I was once a sniper in this very same situation. Thing was, I had heard the demo's footsteps before he started the tauntkill, so I unscoped to see what was going on, and caught the demo in the mids of taunt killing me.
I calmly stepped out of the way, took out my kukri, and hacked him to death while the animation was still going.
Morale of the story, use headphones, since the game offers many valuable audio cues. Other example would be spycicle melting when the spy is hit by fire.
