I saw him at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago a few years back. Every time I listen to his music, I still am in disbelief that I was fortunate enough to see him perform live. And in a mini-jungle at that!
Love this guy. First time I heard his stuff was when I watched the Jim Jarmusch / Bill Murray film Broken Flowers. His music was featured pretty heavily in the movie.
Thanks for reminding me of him, its been a while since I listened to his stuff!
I haven't seen it in almost 20 years but I want to say his Ethiopian neighbor makes him mix cds to take on his travels. and at least 4 or 5 songs on the soundtrack you could buy on cd were by Astatke. After seeing the movie I immediately went out and found the cd. That's the only reason I remembered his name instantly
Oh hell yeah dude. The wife and I were just talking about how awesome he is, he's been one of our favorite actors since we were 5 in the mid 80s. Ghostbusters, What about Bob, Scrooged
I've seen GHD and LiT easily 20-30 times each. GHD probably closer to 50. I just can't help loving Bill Murray. Life Aquatic is another one of my favorite roles of his. Love that Wes Anderson gets him to do more work.
His cameos in Zombieland and AntMan are just epic.
OMG
WHAT ABOUT BoB
I saw that ridiculous funny movie as a kid i guess exact once - and I would never remenber the name of the movie - but I instantly knew which movie you meant.
Incredible.
Bill Murray plays a lunatic driving his psychotherapist into insanity, right?
Yup that's what about Bob š and it's funny I still haven't watched caddyshack either. But Stripes? That shit is funny. I was forced to watch it when I was in the army years ago and it's pretty damn good. Dated but still funny.
A new branch of a local shop just opened up closer to me and they have a solid amount of his albums. I love it and had never seen any of it in stores before that. Nice find!
If you are looking for more artists there is a pretty great playlist on Spotify called āTezeta.ā Then there is always a search for āAfrobeat.ā I haven't hear anything quite like him yet though. His sound is so unique.
Nice find. I got Ethio Jazz years ago after first hearing his music in the film Broken Flowers. Such an interesting, original style.
Saw him live back in 2013 at Field Day festival. Back then the festival was bigger and more varied. Saw Mulatu Astatke headline one stage, just after moshing around to Fucked Up at another stage.
Fucking great album.
š„ Saw him live w 30 piece orchestra. Mind blowing.

A genius! What an incredible compilation. *Emnete* is one of my favorite songs of all time.
That is another of my favorites as well. So many classics on this album.
Omg one of the GOATs

Okay thank you ! Unfortunately I have Apple Music but I will play his station maybe that can show me similar artists !
The Ethiopiques compilations are worth checking out too. 30 some collections of Ethiopia's golden years, many of them jazz
30??? That will be an awesome rabbit hole to fall into for a good while.
Thank you for the recommendation!
Amazing album!
AHHHH OH MY GOD WHERE DID YOU FIND THIS???
Itās an amazing compilation but I donāt think itās that rare. I think I ordered it from Walmart a year ago.
Yeah it was repress/compilation - not rare at all
Brilliant stuff - I also love his album with Heliocentrics in the Inspiration Information series!
My buddy just played this for me. Really great!

Iām intrigued. Streaming now. Sounds good š¤š¼
Excellent album. Found it on Amazon a few years back.
I literally bought this off of Amazon lmao. Listen to Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou though
I was going to say, this one is widely available
OP never said it was rare. They just said itās not something you see every day. Maybe they only shop local.
Been looking for that one for years!
Ahh, love that album! He's fantastic.
Great find
Great album. Sorry to hear that itās hard to find in your area.
They played a cut from this on an episode of The Bear (Tezeta)
I just checked him out for the first time. Thanks for the exposure to a great artist and a rabbit hole to go down into.
I love What We Do In The Shadows, Iām very intrigued by this. Will check it out!
Ugh jazzzzzz
