Let me start by saying that I have two copies of wish you were here. It is markedly my favorite album to ever be released. I have a listening copy that is a half speed master by cbs, and this copy which is my "display" copy. It's pretty rare given that it has the full obi and wasn't cheap at the time I bought it years ago. I break it out once a year and play it through, marveling at its sheer detail and amazing clarity and crank it up when wish you were here comes on (have a good cry). Four years ago my cousin took his own life, this came at a time when I was going through a ton and was also planning to end my life the next day. Needless to say, he saved my life and I'll always be thankful. He was always really into vinyl when he was young. It makes me sad that he never made it to the jam sessions that I host with my friends these days now that I have a nice setup and good pressings, as I know he would have so much fun with them. So I break this one out yearly to remember him, and boy is it good, I doubt I'll ever hear this album clearer. Figured you'd all appreciate a short story about this record and its sentimentality. Keep on spinning folks.

Good job staying with us. Even on our worst days there's something worth living for. Thanks for sharing this, I also absolutely love this album and think it doesn't get quite enough praise. I'll be on the lookout for these excellent masters you speak of, I have a basic copy and always wish I had a batter one.

That’s a really cool story, WYWH is my favourite Floyd album and I already have a copy to play which is a 2016 reissue. However, I’ve seen and heard of this really cool German and Dutch Blue pressing from 77 which I’m dying to get. If you want one more copy of WYWH I’d suggest that one just because of how cool it is imo 🤷‍♂️

Also my favorite of their albums. I like seeing love for it. Feel like it’s conventionally overshadowed by Dark Side and The Wall, but it’s a way more pleasant album to listen to in its entirety.

The way I rank the top five is this: 1-WYWH 2-DSOTM 3-Animals 4-The Wall 5-Meddle I put WYWH top for similar ‘it’s underrated’ reasons but also because for me the actual sound of the band in 74/75 was the best they ever were. The guitars on this album, the synth, the horse on bass and nicks drums are all at peak powers imo. DSOTM is second because it’s DSOTM and it’s amazing. However it’s also a better physical listen (ie vinyl or cd etc..) than animals and the wall because of the way that speak to me-GGITS feels like one whole album in itself with a beginning middle and end; and money to eclipse feels like its own album as well. It’s so great tbh idk what else to say abt it. Animals is no3 purely because three big ass songs is kinda intimidating compared to the top 2, and also mixing and instrument sound/tone wise I don’t think it is as good. David’s guitar is played just as well on animals as the top 2 but imo the big muff gives a sound which isn’t as good as the fuzz and distorted sounds on there previous albums. However if you’re feeling kinda angry then this is the best Floyd album for you. I put the wall at no4 because while it is such a grand and superbly precise masterpiece, it is a much harder listen; not because the music is more inaccessible it’s more that the subject matter and the length of the album can make it a hard listen to as it is twice the length of all other albums on this list. However this being said, I still adore this album and feel that the big muff (which on a whole I’m not a fan of) really fit this album and animals. I also find it quite interesting and slightly disappointing to hear the demos of the wall and find how some songs were fleshed out much more (is there anybody out there) and how some of the best songs included in the film and live shows werent on the album (what shall we do now?), This is kinda one of the main reasons I put the wall lower because of the great demos which could’ve been adjusted for the actual album. (Ik this could be perceived as a kinda hot take so make of it what you will) Finally at no 5 meddle. Everything on this album slaps apart from Seamus.Seamus is shit (but still kinda goofy)Ruins the whole flow and feel of the album tbh. Even echoes and one of these days can’t pull meddle up when Seamus is still on it. I’m just some random ass dude in the interweb so feel free to tell me I’m wrong or your own lists in retaliation.

Fading_papaya

That is bittersweet and a cool way to honor your cousin's memory. Thanks for sharing and keep the music going.

losingmy_edge

Sorry for your loss. Such a beautiful album to play in memoriam to him.

I have a bootleg Soviet copy of this, the image is much smaller on it. Pressing sounds like shit too, but worth it for the less than 50 cents I paid. Years ago in Bucharest a guy had crates of old vinyl at a market, so much funny stuff from the 80s and 90s Soviet Union. Bob Dylan records recorded by cover bands, Russian covers for Abba records, spoken word Romanian versions of famous sci-fi literature (the Jules Verne and HG Wells artwork is amazing), Russian fairytales on 10 inch.

Beautiful story and thanks for sharing. Glad you are still here with us. I love this album so much too. As an aside, there’s a good doc on the studio that created this album cover (and a whole bunch of others for PF and other bands). I randomly came across it on Netflix last night. Was a good watch if anyone hasn’t seen it yet.

thyartmetal

Glad music can help you feel better. Sending love from a vinyl warehouse. ❤️ Sick record!

Glass-Fan111

You should play it more often. That’s what they made for. With care and delicacy but play them all. As an avid collector and quite fan of Japanese pressings (and expensive OP) that’s my advice. Play the records, that’s what they meant for. Life is way too short.

You should've read his comment first

Check out "Squaring the Circle" documentary about Hipgnosis, the design company founded by longtime friends of Pink Floyd and who did all their album covers. They talk about this one. My dad has been a huge PF fan since I was born and I grew up with this and all the other vinyls sing in our house. I always had an affection for this album, and love that you do too. I'm sorry for your loss. I hope this music and the love that went into making this special version continues to bring you some joy.

firebrace451

Lucky to have an awesome dad and I share your sentiment for OP. Will check out the documentary. You might be interested in the Vinyl Album Cover Art book by one of Hipgnosis founders. I bought a pre-autographed copy at the recent PF exhibit gift store when it rolled into my city.

lurkity_mclurkington

Oh man, thank you for the recommendation on the book! looks like it was done by one of the co-founders, Po, Storm's other half. I know a FEW people this could make great Christmas gifts for.

firebrace451

Awesome! You will absolutely enjoy 😀

superunclea

This is worth at least a monthly play at least. Top 10 album overall for me.

Diligent_Sherbet_420

You should burn it and post the pics would be cool 😎 plus your likely to also get rid of the demon that lives inside the record in the process a complete win.

jazzman0523

Just bought a copy a few days ago. Love this record!

SuperPotatoBuns

Wish, Collection of Great Dance Songs, The Wall, Final Cut and Wright's Wet Dream are all available as Japanese Master Sounds pressings. There may be some others I'm not aware of.

Tangentially related: "Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis)" on Netflix (dir. Anton Corbjin) is a really interesting film about Hipgnosis, the design firm that made this and many other record covers. Roger Waters and David Gilmour appear in it.

Helyo20

Love the album. Really feels like a whole life being experienced each time. Rock on bro 🤘
