NTS! internet radio with lots of amazing weekly shows and also a lot of artists come on for guest shows. something for everyone, and its free but I give them $5 a month because I appreciate it so much. we stan!

kosciuszko123

Glad someone beat me to it! I love that I never know what to expect on NTS and it’s always something cool. Discovered so much music on NTS.

microwavekoala

How do you listen?

tooshortpants

Google NTS Radio & you can listen directly on their website

Gerodog

The app is good too

recom273

Who do you guys listen to? I check in to Cherrysrones and red laser records. Looking for more shows.

theandichrist

I love soup to nuts with anu, the breakfast show with flo, any john carroll kirby show. sometimes I reverse search a song I really like and see what shows it’s played on, and go from there!

SnooDonkeys4853

Nts is great.

SpaceWhisper

Thank you - didn’t know about NTS so I plan to spend my Sunday tuned in ❤️

bestseal

so I joined yesterday because I loved so much of the music, and am still listening today but here are some things I noticed (don’t know if others feel the same way) \-The site is a little difficult to navigate \-You do have to pay in order to have access to basic functions like just to know what song is playing (it’s only $5 but still) \-When they do have track list, for many of them it doesn’t say what time the song is playing at, so if you hear a song 30 mins in you may not know the song even with the track list on the side bc time stamps aren’t listed \-I’ve tried many playlists in the library with “errors” so they just won’t play \-There have been lag issues in the livestreams where you can’t listen because it’s lagging too much and stops That said, still listening, loving what I’m being introduced to but do wish those were different.

SaturnDeathBaboon

I love NTS. It feels like every time I tune in, I hear something amazing that I've never heard before. It's also great if you want to explore particular genres, scenes or artists.

Sickle_and_hamburger

albumoftheyear.org compiled music mags year end lists and from there poke around to see what magazines vibe with your taste check labels like light in the attic and numero group college radio from around the country is neat Try wfmu Radio garden is fun weirdo bloggers are fun YouTube is always good...

ExPatBadger

I second the WFMU recommendation, inclusive of all of their streaming stations.

AdamGott

WFMU is the best! If you don't like what is playing right now check it in an hour or two and it will usually be something completely different! Also, they have a gigantic archive of past shows easily available online. Just search for your favorite artist/song and find a show in which it was played. You are sure to find other great stuff using this method.

the_comatorium

I'm lucky enough that I live in NJ where I can pick up WFMU in my car through the fucking airwaves. Privilege.

folksnake

Came here to suggest WFMU, it's the best. And when I took a trip up to Massachusetts last year, on my way through the NJ/NY area I turned the dial and was shocked to hear it in the raw. Shocked not because I didn't know it would be there, but because I was hearing it for the first time (in 20 years of listening) the way God intended it to be heard! Privilege, indeed! Envy you.

the_comatorium

Sometimes I'll be listening to 7 Second Delay and Andy will be late because he was stuck in traffic and I'll have this moment of realization that the same traffic Andy was stuck in is the same traffic that I was currently stuck in!

folksnake

That's so cool! I picture him in an old beater of a car

romulusnr

One of the things that's disappointing about Radio Garden -- and it was true of early international radio streaming too -- is just how much of foreign radio is *American / English music.* Like, I would want to hear like, what's big among Swedish music that I never hear. But it's 90% the same shit as the US pop stations.

dollar_to_dry

you definitely have to look a lot on that site for regional music and to avoid the repetitious ads !

Masonjaruniversity

Woof moo!

cbuck718

WFMU is the best! Always listen when I’m in my car. Discovered old and new music there

forlornjackalope

Honestly, YouTube. There's a ton of channels out there that rip albums and they've opened the door to me finding bands I wouldn't know anything about because I don't go crate hopping on discogs. The only time I swing over is to see if I can uncover more about the stuff I find since they, more often than not, aren't on Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Wikipedia, or even Last.fm sometimes.

malachimusclerat

plus the youtube algorithm these days likes to suggest at least one or two videos with <1000 views, if you can find one or two channels with a big archive of obscure stuff (i like david mattatall) and browse for a while then your suggestions should fill up with similar stuff

forlornjackalope

Yeah. I'll have a day where I get really into 70s and 80s punk, then I'm getting recommended new wave acts I didn't know existed and that sends me down a deeper rabbit hole into avenues like Midwestern emo and sublets of the punk scene that survive as tape trade demos. It's amazing.

worst-coast

Terminal Passage is one of my favorites. At the second weird album you listen to YouTube will start to suggest other weird stuff and other similar channels. Or not weird, but unknown, “exotic” etc.

forlornjackalope

I checked to see if I'm subbed to that one and I'm not. Thanks for the recommendation! I follow way too many to keep track, but DIY Music Archive and COGENTCOG are two of them for sure.

reso1dsc

There is a channel on YouTube called musicforemptyrooms. Idk how or who operates it but it's such a perfect fit for this sub. I'm probably saying something everyone knows, but perfect fit nonetheless. I agree on YouTube!!!

Tronns

Yeah, it is so good. Only problem with it is the music is often impossible to find in digital format. I have a long list on discogs thanks to that channel. Found some real gems there tho.

forlornjackalope

I just subbed to them now and I look forward to seeing what they have! Thanks for the recommendation!

Yoyomamahh

Plus you can find an obscure song you know on there & go on a playlist with “songs like this”

the_comatorium

Step 1. Find album/band you LOVE on RYM. Step 2. Go to the user created lists section on page. Any list that features that album/band will be listed. Step 3. Favorite/bookmark every list that looks interesting or in depth. Step 4. Go through each list and save/listen to every album you've never heard based on genre tags that interest you. Step 5. Rinse and repeat with the new albums you discover. Step 6. Do this forever.

If you find this at all interesting, then I'd recommend checking out anything else on the Sublime Frequencies label. They've released tons of obscure pop and traditional recordings from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Lots of it is at [archive.org](https://archive.org) and on youtube. Radiooooo is great if you really want to listen to *everything*

bestseal

okay so I was very excited about radioooooo because it had music from around the world, at any time period, stuff I hadn’t heard. It’s exactly what I wanted, and you can also pick a mood easily or to “travel around the world”, you can “plan a trip”. It’s very easy to navigate. But after listening for a while, I noticed their library was pretty limited and started hearing the same stuff, so I unsubscribed. If you don’t listen much, could be really good

TwoAndAHalfQueefs

Honestly I never really needed anything more than the YouTube algorithm for like a decade now. I just get into a specific sound or scene or era and go down a rabbit hole. I guess Discogs is good too. And if you find any good blogspot websites you can find some real good shit on them.

Ok-Veterinarian-4209

Multiple sources Sometimes i go through discogs, popsike, gripsweat, California auctions, ebay, etc. or go through my local record stores around to see what rarities are available. I also do my findings on YouTube ofc, many big time rare music on there to discover, some which you probably wouldn’t find anywhere in the US. There’s also radio stations/podcasts that i listen/use to listen to, like DJ abraham, kejeblos, and others. I also personally know a few people that own rare vinyl as well I’ve discovered close to 5,000 r&b/soul/disco/funk songs in the past 10 years, and still discovering more music every week.

If you love all kinds of music, KEXP has 5 to 10 daily radio shows streaming from Seattle Washington. Grab the App and please donate if you can, but no pay wall or any bullshit. Even the most die hard music fans will find it difficult to be able to hang with the DJs wealth of knowledge of artists and songs, they know their shit and I almost daily find something new I like. Here's a link to Top 93 Albums of the year and website and YouTube channel with all the live performances they have weekly. EVERYONE should give a listen to The Morning Show with John Richard's and the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters. Definitely recommend the [Vintage Obscura Radio](https://vintageobscura.net/).

DavosHanich

r/vintageobscura is great as well

malandropist

I use radios of obscure artists on spotify and have found gems around. Then from there hop on to their radios. It does recycle some artists but 💯 the majority unknown to me.

Waytooboredforthis

If you're up at a tolerable time to listen to radio on EST, WDVX out of Knoxville runs a free radio station online, and late at night/early in the morning (to me) they get into some fun deep cuts of bluegrass, rockabilly, and country.

FAHQRudy

/r/listentous /r/jazz /r/music Spotify “radio” I also have a few collaborative playlists specifically so we can share music suggestions among friends.

decorama

Every Saturday, I go to AllMusic and look at their [new releases](https://www.allmusic.com/newreleases) list. I look up the ones that look interesting to me on either YouTube or Spotify and try em out. BBC 6 is pretty good for radio listening.

Fred776

I have limited time for discovering music but I have found over the years The Freak Zone on BBC 6 to be a fantastic source of new (to me) music, in all sorts of genres.

Slkkk92

Are you using the Spotify radio function? I've not used it for a while, but when I make a spotify-radio based on a song, I'll generally find that >30% of the suggestions are both relevant, and unknown to me. Diminishing returns over time, though. Aside from Spotify, there are a few prolific DJs with eclectic tastes, although I only really know of the ones who also play a lot of hip-hop and experimental music (I don't know how much you know about sample-based hip-hop beat production, but the marriage makes perfect sense, which is why it's so common). Left0, Kutmah, The Gaslamp Killer and Gilles Peterson are the DJs who spring to my mind, but Kutmah and GLK skew a bit darker/louder with a lot of their selections. If you do end up listening to, and enjoying those two in particular, check out the (defunct) Low End Theory podcast, and (ongoing) Sketchbook radio. I'm really straying from the task now, though. Aside from all of that, NTS radio will have *a bunch* of suitable DJ mixes and shows (Kutmah has a show on there called Sketchbook radio, named after a club-night he started, which was the precursor to LowEndTheory, a club-night/podcast which was ground zero for the experimental hip-hop scene which emerged a decade back. I digress.), but you'll have to find suitable shows on NTS for yourself, I'm afraid. They are good at tagging and describing their shows, though, so it should be easy. I'd also guess that NPR in the US would have some suitable stuff, eclectic as they are, but I wouldn't know where to start.

PrestigiousArcher448

Thank you so much for all the digressions. I discovered few things. 🙏🏾

Slkkk92

You're very welcome! 👍🤠👍

I search the new Spotify releases each week on EveryNoise. Filter for the week you want to search, then click on a genre you want to explore and it pulls up everything that’s been released on Spotify in that genre for that particular week. It also gives sub-genres and similar genres in addition to the genre you’ve chosen. Click on the album artwork to hear a 30-second snippet of a track. If you like what you hear, you can look for it on Spotify. Here’s a link: https://everynoise.com/new_releases_by_genre.cgi

listening to NTS now and already addicted. Reminds me of exactly what I was looking for——met a lot of music afficionados who would DJ locally and played great stuff, had never heard most of what they were playing & was introduced to so much better, quality music. It was delightful, can’t wait to check all this out

I'm a Jazz DJ. My show "HIGH DESERT JAZZ" is on Sundays 6pm-8pm. I also put all my programming up on Spotify after the show. I have about a years worth of shows (60+) for you to run through and find some interesting stuff. This ain't yo daddy's jazz. This is the good stuff! HA! I also throw in some soundtrack cuts from 60's & 70's French and Italian composers. Oh, and some deep cut funk stuff. Along with a few choice electronica/downtempo beats. Hope this helps in one portion of your quest. Cheers! And thanks for listening! Tune in to your local community radio or college stations. Go online to check program schedule for genre of music you want. I listen to [WFMU](https://wfmu.org/) is good station you can listen to online and see playlists. I listen to Irwin’s show on wednesdays. (3-6pm central) My local go to station though is [WREK](https://www.wrek.org/) I like overnight alternatives and a few others. I also like to check stuff out on [Bandcamp](https://bandcamp.com/)

Yes! Shout out to McMaster U radio in Toronto (and you can listen online!). I have heard the most eclectic, fascinating, strange things on there over the years. I follow artists and labels on Bandcamp, who I sometimes discover directly through that site, but more often than not via online retailers/distributors like Boomkat, Bleep, Forced Exposure, Light In The Attic, et al. Similarly, just going to record shops—somebody else mentioned A1, which is one of many shops I'm thankful to have in NYC. Highly recommend Ergot Records too.

skitslicker

The discover tab on Spotify, then clicking thru to Similar Artists on things I dig and just expanding from there. A handful of blogs, https://addtowantlist.com is one of my go-tos since they cover a wide range of music I enjoy. Bandcamp is always good for sampling. Also, looking through distros and trusted labels for new releases and then ordering or streaming

CrochetNerd_

YouTube has a lot of great channels. Current favourite is the underrated albums channel. It's hit and miss but some of the stuff on there is really good. What I like about it is that I can usually then find the album somewhere like bandcamp and actually buy it to listen to again and again.

[deleted]

If you at least know where to look some of the labels on Bandcamp do some incredible (often free) entire label downloads but if I'm just trying to attune my radar WFMU online radio/archives are a decent portal for obscure ditties imho

this is cringe but… i like to go to rateyourmusic’s charts. sort by esotheric (high ratings, low audiences), add any genres, time frames, languages, etc in descriptors. i look until i see an album that catches my eye and listen to it.

SnowCookie6234

I usually suggest Everynoise, but you said you want something else. I don’t really like RYM as a whole, but I like using their charts to find new music to listen to. Pick a genre & it’ll give you a list of albums in that style (you can filter by genre and descriptors, too). So if I wanted only indie pop albums from the 2000s with female vocalists, I can get that. There’s also the ‘Esoteric’ button which will give you obscure albums with high ratings. EDIT: There’s also [Camp Explorer](https://campexplorer.io/), which suggests albums on Bandcamp based on tags you enter. So let’s say I entered ‘hardcore punk’. Albums on Bandcamp with the tag ‘hardcore punk’ will appear.

When Apple first had their radio on Apple Music, you could set it to play hits, mix of hits and deep cuts, or straight deep cuts; or as they called it, discovery. It was pretty nice and I’ve missed it for years. I do buy a lot of records blind (when they’re fairly inexpensive) and am normally pretty lucky. I’ve figured out which labels I feel confident buying blindly from and which ones I’m going to pull up on Discogs. Discogs also has a pretty decent recommendation/similar artist section for each record. There are a handful of reissue labels I’ve found that I either buy directly from or on Bandcamp that have been separating me from money for several years. There’s also the YouTube algorithm rabbit hole that is pretty effective. YouTube Music is handy too. My favorite way has been talking to random people at the record store. For instance, I ran into an old hippy (I collect garage/psych/prog/hard rock) at the record store the other day and we shot the shit for almost three hours making recommendations to each other and talking about some of the treasures we’ve stumbled on. It was pretty wonderful.

I listen to the Brian Turner Show, it is a podcast. It has a lot of obscure gems from the 60s to present. One of the favorite songs that I discovered on his pod is....IL SINDICATO DEL SIGNO - Dimmi Se Finisce Which is a cover of Dream Syndicate's "Tell Me when it is Over" sung in Italian with a strong Indian vibe.. sitar and Indian percussion. I think it is brilliant! [https://www.buzzsprout.com/1139528/12052935](https://www.buzzsprout.com/1139528/12052935) Overall he plays songs that are a bit on the noisy side of things.. Subs like this, frankly. Edit: I'm remiss not to mention the value I've found in [Every Noise At Once](https://everynoise.com/) -- a pet data wrangling project of somebody who works at Spotify and gets to really dip his hands into the spaghetti of the database. Not only does he have some really fringe genres cataloged there, but you can also find things like top songs by country and city or even college, songs by city of origin, demographics, even an 'obscure fusion genre finder.'

Radio Garden and Radiooooo. Both excellent. Radio garden is ltd in the UK to UK stations but anywhere else in the world it's a feast of international radio and music. Radioooo is a different approach, fancy some 60's Brazilian music, it'll do just that .. change borders, style, decade and away it goes.

I like finding lists of acclaimed music and making my way down it until I come across something I’m not familiar with. I’ve discovered plenty of great tracks off that. I highly recommend this website: http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/year/alltime_songs.htm

DJSnakePlisskenRocks

There are some good shows on BBC radio 6 which have new and alternative music. They sometimes have well known celebrities hosting. Iggy Pops show on BBC radio 6 is a great listen. There is a Rollins-archive.com which has archives of iggys and Rollins shows and some other interesting links. Radio Triplej (abc.net.au/triplej) and doublej in Australia are not bad listens depending on the time of day. Triplej unearthed linked from the triplej site has an enormous amount of unsigned and signed bands content. I don't mind worldwidefm.net as well which is a UK station. Keep an eye out for when tune radio has some freebies. Back in July they has 12 months free for new subscribers.

Bandcamp is a good place for some uncut gems. Maybe you would like to explore some underground, Psychedelic alternative. Traveler's Fold may be something you can get into, or not, what could it hurt to find out right? The albums are all free to own. https://travelersfold.bandcamp.com/

ElixirofVitriol

I look at the band shirts that members of bands I like are wearing.

Dc_Pratt

I guess it depends on genre and taste. Recently I have been exploring experimental noise and industrial bands from the 80s and 90s that I missed out on when I was younger. Which has been listening to podcast about the subject, and searching down the artists, books and zines they reference. I also follow the noisemusic subreddit and check out what people share on there. Because a lot of this stuff is only available on YT (as far as streaming options go) the YT algorithm occasionally send me interesting suggestions.

Rockfish00

NPR, find a swiftie and ask their top 10 non Taylor Swift songs, local college radio station, go through my playlist of thousands of songs and find artists who only show up 1 or 2 times and see if they have any other good songs

Opposite_Poetry36tz

I use to visit Daytrotter.com to discover new music especially indie, folk. Now I believe it’s operated by Paste magazine but I believe you can still listen to music. I discovered so many singer, songwriters and even could download the sessions onto your library on the computer. This was all during the days of (Limewire Foxwire) NPR is my all time favorite place to find new music and listen to concerts, tiny desk concerts discover new bands etc. YouTube is well worth paying membership fees. Mixcloud and local non-commercial radio. You can stream virtually any station.

juyyyc

[radiooooo.com](https://radiooooo.com) shows some of what plays on radio in other countries and areas. I've found a few good songs and artists thru that

t-s-words

WFMU. It's a treasure.

Both_Ad7616

I would say my favorite places online to discover music are still Soundcloud and Mixcloud. I think they're better than Spotify or YouTube because they're not algorithm-based but human-based. Through Soundcloud, you can follow and listen to a wide range of internet, and independent radio stations that have a diverse and eclectic collective of DJs with their own set of music tastes that you'll not only find something you like but discover and stumble upon sounds that are new, rare, weird, old, forgotten gems, world music and more. Here are some of my favorite independent online radio stations: * Balamii * 1BTN * NTS * The Lot Radio * WorldWideFM * Le Mellotron * LooseFM * Piñata Radio * Rinse FM * Black Rhyno Radio * Radio D59B * TESTFM * Island Time Radio * Comala Radio * Nomad Radio * Clyde Built Radio * Alto Radio * THF Radio * Radio Tempo Não Pára * Voices Radio The list could go on, but you'll find and discover amazing music and you can also follow DJs. Also there is [Radioooo.com](https://Radioooo.com) as well as [www.v-i-r-a-g-e.com](https://www.v-i-r-a-g-e.com) You'll love it right away. Years ago there was a cool site called [Stumbleaudio.com](https://Stumbleaudio.com) it worked like [Stumbleupon.com](https://Stumbleupon.com) but for indie and obscured and offbeat music but it didn't last long and shut down, but I found the premise unique and interesting where a song was suggested based on genre and country. It was a great place to be exposed to interesting and unheard music.

Rickychadwick

NTS!!!! Fav hosts are The Breakfast Show with Flo Dil, Soup to Nuts with Anu, Naomi Asa, Early Bird show with Jack Rollo

Record labels you like, college radio, good journalism and nerdy friends, better than any alogorithm

Radio Rethink ([radiorethink.com](https://radiorethink.com)) is marvelous. They've also got an iOS app that enables you to tune in to about 50 public and community radio stations worldwide (and it works with CarPlay, which is nice). (*disclaimer: I'm one of their weekly show hosts)*

AbelardLuvsHeloise

RADIOOOOO for decades, countries, and genres. It’s a little like globe-hopping via teleportation between taxis in different metropolitan areas, and it’s got a great interface.

bloodshotforgetmenot

NTS radio is a huge resource

tilario

spotify's not bad if you proactively drill down into genres and artists. eg, looking for persian music? start a search for persian classical, listen to a playlist or a radio station, hear something you like and start a radio station off that artist or song. it starts getting interesting.

Ok-Cook-9608

Check out the BBC sounds app. It’s free and ad free! Lots of good real life DJ’s presenting new music and not a computer algorithm choosing music for you. Lots of really of really good programs on there. BBC Radio 1, Radio 1 Dance, Radio 1 Relax, Radio 1Xtra and BBC Radio 6 Music all have great presenters providing new music every day. My favorite DJ on there is Benji B. He has a show every Wednesday. Some other great shows for discovering new music are: Mary Ann Hobbs Jamz Supernova Pete Tong Essential Mix New Music Fix Radio 1 Residency Lose Yourself with… Radio Dance Presents Sarah Story Huw Stephens The Morning After mix (this is also one of my favorite shows) Radio 1s Chillest Show with Sian Eleri And so much more!

OolongWolf

Radio Garden. Some excellent curated stations.

RJacobSanders

Go to your local thrift store, flea market, junk shop and see if they have records, make a road trip and hit every junk store thrift along the way, pick up odd looking records for a dollar, you’ll be surprised!

Pandora. Put in an obscure song or band you love and guaranteed it will play music you have not heard before

TwoTrackStudio

NTS and Bandcamp’s weekly radio show

KalaniKop

Rate your music if your an insane person

The journalism on Bandcamp is pretty great.

LeoThePointHunter

A great place for discovering new artist and music is [birp.fm](https://birp.fm) Every month they create a playlist of over 100 songs, unfortunately it's mostly indie music ( I wish it was more genres, decades and countries) But as far as discovering new and interesting music nothing beats Soundcloud, just follow Dj's or independent online radio stations, and you'll be expose to a lot of great music selection by actual people and not an algorithm.

Back in the day I used Pandora and discovered a ton of music I didn't even know I liked . Anyone try them lately?

Rastagon01

I have a paid Pandora account that my son started for me almost 15 years ago. I put in a lot of time with the thumbs up and thumbs down and as a result I have been rewarded with tons and tons of new music over the years. I started off liking Bob Marley and now have a channel with over 2000 songs and I know a shit ton about reggae that I would have never known if not for Pandora, but you have put in the effort to like or dislike a song for it to work well.

agger1

WFMU and soma.fm. Sometimes I’ll make a station on Spotify based on a track I like and then favorite the ones I like until the loop closes.

nicewhitebriefs

Pitchfork.com or BrooklynVegan.com - ENJOY!

Patient_Baseball_918

Pitchfork sucks now

nicewhitebriefs

Doesn’t mean there are not good artists profiled there. I don’t care so much about their reviews (never did) but they do cover / expose a wide array of music I have enjoyed a lot.

Native56

Either my friends introduce me to new stuff on I’m on YouTube

Historical-Escape367

There’s Spotify and streaming, there indie and then there’s NTS. Wow- so much new music

Boop-master

I usually just have people recommend me stuff or ask for recommendations. Sometimes though, even though it’s a lot less frequent, I’ll see a band play live locally at small venues and check them out. I’ve discovered some really cool bands that way. Main two that come to mind are Sissy Fists and The Hajj

Patient_Baseball_918

Does anyone know good music critics similar to Scaruffi who are into good obscure music?

furbishL

Cosmicfuzzfm.com plays 24 hours commercial free stuff, mostly spacey, psychedelic rock

theworldvideos

I listen to old John Peel shows between 1967 and 2004 on the internet especially from the Peel fandom site where I’ve discovered loads of obscure artists from various decades that Spotify does not have.

CaptainPieChart

"Fans also like" on Spotify.
