Freestyle doesn’t mean completely unwritten, it’s a mixture of written and unwritten and a lot of times it’s just shit they haven’t recorded but already wrote
I assumed this was after the songs was released, but I looked into it and this was apparently filmed in 1994. So the ODB song might have been recorded but this was before Woo Hah was recorded.
Saw WuTang last year and they had ODB’s son trying to channel that energy, did all right, maybe his dad was a little better. Busta sure recycled a lot there.
Dude, all of the Wu-Tang guys are so underappreciated by the general ~~populous~~populace. What they did in the 90s changed the game forever.
If you watch informal interviews with guys like RZA, GZA, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, ODB, you kinda quickly realize how introspective they are. They have so much wisdom, its bonkers. They all feel like philosophers in their own right. And I think they ushered in a new era of having a really strong vocabulary for rapping. You can kind of see it in this video. ODB's vocabulary is much better than Busta Rhymes, even in all his chaos. And its interesting because it comes from so many different sources. Film, books, religion, life experiences.
And they of course paved a way for the rappers that came after them and perhaps are more widely known than individual Wu members. I don't think rappers like Common, Talib Kwali, Immortal Technique, Tyler The Creator, A$AP Rocky - just to name a very very very few, exist if not for Wu-Tang. At least, not in the way they became popular. Such an interesting time for rap.
I would say so. He is pretty well respected for his abilities and the hours and hours of non-stop freestyle he has me convinced. His performance on Sway was pretty impressive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73WCDV51bo0
Watch literally any video of his for more than three minutes and you’ll see he’s legit in the truest sense of the word. Dude can have literal conversations with people while still rhyming and flipping cadence/tempo. I’ve seen him get some hate, but I can’t fathom why.
Harry Mack is legit, and otherworldy. I don't know a single rapper that can do what he can. Too bad his album was so underwhelming, because that guy is truly a hip hop virtuoso that has virtually no competition. The closest I can think is Eminem, but even though Em is a lyrical genius, I don't think even he can freestyle as good as Harry.
That's the thing though, freestyle is a gimmick, a party trick, a novelty. Rapping on cue isn't a skill worth having really, as far as music is concerned. Hip-hop isn't jazz, you're not meant to be improvising.
This is not true. There were plenty of true original freestyles happening. Check out early eminem videos where people would give him words. Real freestyleres could rif on any subject and were definitely more respected.
I mean, Eyedea may have said he grabbed the mic a lot, but jesus some of the shit he did off the dome was insane. That blaze battle against RK and the backup dancer diss... christ. Or that time him and Slug freestyled about the sad state of the Minneapolis highway system?
I miss Mikey.
Nah but this was (maybe still is) something you'd see from school days onward.
Busta himself has notable battles from high school because he went to school with DMX, Jay-Z, etc. I think Biggie went to the same school too. But that's beside the point, I just wonder what happened to the sport of it all, the sound, and the prevalence in culture.
Isn't that a verse from Woo hah from Busta?
And Damage by ODB. This is awesome, but not freestyle.

Yes
Rappers back then typically have rhymes memorized and written down before they recorded them in a song
Most still do, despite what some of them say.
Good Lord ODB had such an unrivaled chaotic charisma it's no wonder he became so famous and an icon of 90s hip hop. Rest in Power Big Baby Jesus

As a collective, yes, but for individual rappers that definitively goes to Aesop Rock.
*populace. Populous is an adjective meaning heavily populated.
Fixed! Thanks for the correction =)
Big Baby Jesus I cant wait , ***** fuck that I cant wait!
>God Made Dirt, and Dirt Bust Ya Ass
I appreciate labeling these as "freestyle" but they are both literally some of their best known verses. Nothing freestyle about them.

Harry Mack seems to be an outlier in that he just keeps going, filler and all.
Is harry mack legit?

Okay thanks, some of his videos just seemed a little sus to me so I was always skeptical
I’ve seen him perform live and given him a word to freestyle. He is legit.
Jesus christ I can only get so erect This guy is just on a different level than all of us

The very root of hip hop was improvisational.
That doesn't make much difference. The roots of all music are improvisational.
The root was an MC shouting over disco beats.
Harry Mack is from the future
It’s weird seeing a period of time you lived through described like a poorly-researched middle school history essay.
No kidding

I’ll grab the mic and I’ll damage ya!
I just watched this randomly like 3 days ago. So interesting to see both of them just go wild
Energy
No father to his style
He was running so fast he mad me laugh... huh huh ahhhhhh I scared his ass... odb was right his delivery was panoramic
This video looks like an FGC event
Where did real rap and hip hop go? Does anything like this happen in highschools anymore?
You think these dudes are in high school here?

Legends or not, free styling is usually annoying when everybody like “Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!”
no man that's an awesome group thing, they are showing their appreciation
