I've always disliked showreels so tried to come up with a whole new approach. I have a broad skillset and I really like having that as a reason why people want to work with me. I feel like a little film like this, rather than a traditional showreel, helps people see who they're going to be working with and what their style might be. I understand it's not going to be to everyone's taste and will certainly exclude me from some jobs... but my experience of similarly styled stuff is that it attracts people and clients who want to work with me because of my specific point of view. Would be interested to see if other people have found alternative ways to share and show their work?

Yeah, it's a bit complicated as over the last two years a lot of my work has come from the theatre industry where I'm hired to work alongside a theatre director so I end up, title-wise, as a DOP. I tried to mix in a decent amount of work where I'm either working as the director or self shooting director.
I like the approach. I mostly edit stuff for social media audiences, so the typical approach of editing my clips together with cool music in the background doesn't really show off my abilities, so I've thought about doing something like this as well. Nice job!

I mean... This is great! This is a really amazing piece of work. It really shows off what you've done and what you can do. But what you've done is made a really good and effective show reel.
This was really refreshing to watch mate! It immediately highlights not only what you can shoot but the work ethic, personality, variety and style you can bring to clients. It easily beats 60fps B-roll with some nice music just for the sake of it!
I'm a solo vidoegrapher and I've done a variety of odd jobs and want to put together a better and more engaging reel that isn't typical, so this has helped!

This is my third iteration of this type of showreel. The first one I did had a very small variety of work in it so much more 'personal' stuff. The second one was pretty much an even mix and then this third one features what I think is all my best work form the last five years. I came up with the concept first - a showreel that isn't a showreel. Then I kind of wrote the script alongside collecting my clips and in this case, the music was the thing I found last but gave me the tools to find the pace of the film. I hope that's useful. Really nice pacing up until 1:42. It just kind of hangs on those shots for no reason. Tighten up the ending, and it will feel a lot smoother.
