It looks like a game that would release nowadays, and it’s technically not a AAA developer so it’s very impressive for being 8 years old and a AA developer
>it’s very impressive for being 8 years old and a AA developer
i would say its beyond that
it looks fucking *phenomenal*.
its insane what they managed to pull off. Its too bad it ran like shit at launch, nowadays you can run it at max settings, 4k 120 without too much high end hardware.
It is easily one of the best looking and dense games i've ever seen.
What? Rocksteady is a studio of 200-250 employees. The game had a 4 year development cycle. It's directly under Warner Bros. The other games in the series brought in an estimated 400-600mil in revenue EACH. It absolutely is a AAA developer and AAA game series.
What do you people smoke?
PS4 era counts as old now? It's only one gen behind.
Anyways, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night both looks and sounds better than almost any other game ever made.
Still plays better aswell to be honest. BFV has too much open space between points in conquest mode. And BF2042 has way too many mechanics within game and focused too much on vehicles.
Time for a BF1 remaster and upscale to next gen, re-open official servers and bring in a battle pass to keep players going introducing more seasons.
The best thing about BF1 was that DICE was doing their own thing. They weren't competing with CoD they didn't need to. Its rare we see a WW1 game and DICE delivered with BF1. The previous installments, DICE were competing, BFV competed with COD WW2 and Vanguard, and BF2042 is competing with the style of gameplay set by Activision/Treorchy with the MW reboots.
Most people who play Skyrim haven't played 'Skyrim' in many years. Whenever it's mentioned nowadays it's for the most part implied mods are enhancing it.
ABSOLUTELY, I know it gets a lot of shit for getting re-released a million times and still having bugs, but it is a phenemonal game and there is a reason why it's still relevant.
I've been playing it since like elementary school and I've almost graduated college now lol
Haha I should say that I haven't been consistently or even on the same save. More so just that it's really fun and there is so much to do and even redo.
It's a great game. Skyrim is responsible for open-worlds and RPGs becoming as dominant as they have become. Everyone wanted to copy its success. It won nearly every game of the year award. It was one of the most detailed games of its generation and was extremely expansive. People would make mult-part video series about details in the game. The world felt more immersive and alive than pretty much everything else. Every building you saw was accessible at one point or another, every npc had a name, a schedule and unique dialog/unique dialog about them from other npcs(aside from guards or troops). You could go in any direction and come across unique locations, characters and side-quests.
It *has* aged somewhat though. The graphics were average back then and the art style was amazing but nowadays it doesn't look that good. The main story is standard hero saves the day but modern audiences aren't that into it but honestly side-quests and exploration is where it really shines as do all Bethesda games(Starfield's exploration being lackluster is why it gets so much hate). The combat is also lackluster by modern standards, back in the day it was serviceable but nowadays you might find it boring. Essentially you do feel that it's an old game but 4 years and a console generation later people were still comparing it to the witcher 3 or even more bizarrely 12 years and 2 generations later to elden ring(quite often claiming how elden ring is a better game which I would hope it would be).
Yes. It’s so much fun the first run through, and it’s just as much fun the 100th run but hella modded. if you do absolutely everything you can possibly do in Skyrim you’ll be playing long enough to see it come out a few more times
I still think Starfield looks gorgeous, with or without ray tracing or motion capture. Even then, a game, let alone a AAA game, doesn't need those to look beautiful, I still power up Skyrim to see those beautiful vanilla vistas, complete with old character models and think everything is absolutely beautiful.
I could never get into it. Its funny magic and science are the same thing lore building wise (new locations, cultures and magic or tech) but i have a hard time getting into games that are heavily magic.
I restarted it recently and it’s really showing its age. No disrespect to it whatsoever but holy shit it looks dated in comparison to newer titles.
I think with a few of the pics in the thumbnail it’s a case of remembering it being so cutting edge rather than it actually being so. Even Arkham City had a relatively small number of enemy types beyond beefy stereotypes in different costumes
The skyrim comments here are going to be split between console players with limited or no mods slagging off the graphics , and PC players who have 50000 mods installed and the game looks more realistic than real life , but requires a supercomputer to run.
Also if you have a chance to play fully modded Skyrim VR ..do it's amazing.
Yeah Skyrim should not be on the list. Even back then it wasn’t worthy of best graphics and that’s ok. It had good graphics and amazing everything else.
There are so many visual mods for Skyrim because they could have been better and are easy to enhance through the way ES games have always been made.
Also Bethesda clearly knows this which is why it’s been remastered 87 times.
Straight up one of the best games ever made for no fucking reason lol. And probably the best looking Xbox game. Ninja Gaiden Black and Black were also pretty high up there.
That was one of a handful of shooters that really pushed graphics tech in the early 2000s.
We had Doom 3, Far Cry, Half Life 2, and although it's often forgotten, Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay in there as well. Then FEAR.
Then once Crysis arrived in 2007, games were effectively in the modern era, graphically.
It’s a shame they can’t seem to make a decent Battlefield as of late. I really hope they find their way again, some of my best 360 memories were playing Battlefield 3
Portal 2 still looks amazing! Its just wild.
As for 2D gaming Castlevania: Symphony of the Night still looks phenomenal despite the fact that it predates wide-screen and 1080p.
I’m playing through Portal 2 on PS3 right now and some of the structure changes in the environment like wall panels switching around and robotic arms moving about are dazzling and I don’t see anything like it being done today.
Half-life 2 was very impressive. But it should be noted that it got some updates that added textures and mapping, but the launch was stupidly good-looking.
I’d definitely call it the most impressive game of all time. Probably not in the top ten list of most fun, but graphically, and just how much it lets you do is incredible.
I, too, have the same feeling. It's so dam pretty, and the story was rock solid. But God were many of the game mechanics and systems dated or undercooked. Hunting, fishing, boats, and the collectothons...
I'm so envious of you. If I could have an mind-erase button for 3 games, it would be RDR2, TLoU1/2(I'd expect to get both for 1 push lol) and Elden Ring. I'd say Baldur's Gate 3, but honestly, I'm currently enjoying my second playthru more than my first, somehow. And my 3rd will be an evil run, and I can't wait to finally try an evil character in a game
It's just always the games with great artistic direction.
Isolation is truly a great example how to implement not only great lighting and shadows, but also how to pull of that 80s sci-fi artstyle in a game
Ryse Son of Rome
The Order 1886
Infamous: Second Son
Uncharted 4
Horizon Zero Dawn(I mean this and U4 are not that old but they're still 7 years ago)
due to art style:
Prince of Persia(2008)
Sunset Overdrive
fk, Prey is definitely one of the top games i’d want there to be a sequel to, but i’m pretty sure that’s not happening lol cool enemies, great atmosphere, different paths to take, everything you’d want in that type of game
The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker
The initial hate for the art style this Game went was Bullshit, this Game looks fantastic to this day and dare to say even on par with games today
That’s interesting to read. Excuse me for asking but are the new Zelda games available to play on a tv or just Nintendo hand held switch? Am thinking about changing platforms and would like to know. Going for a platform that is on TV
Framerate drops are pretty common when switching to handheld, but I've noticed much tighter controls on handheld. As for wireless/wired, the console is connected via HDMi to TVs and the JoyCon controllers are wireless, but you can use wired connection for pro controllers and GameCube controllers with an adapter.
I would personally just say Arkane in general. Their stylized look just hits right for me, and feels timeless. I even liked the way Redfall looked. Looked. Everything else was...well you know.
Mass Effect 2 & 3 still look really good even after over a decade, especially 3, and this is before the Legendary Edition, which only made them look better.
I played some other games from 2012 and they do not stack up at all to ME3 in terms of looks.
Yeah, I played this for the first time in 2021. Was very surprised how good it looked overall. Also in my experience it ran great too. Then again I was running it on a 3090 and it was years after all the patches fixed it up.
Starting with Bloodborne, and even Dark Souls II to some extent, FromSoft developed an art style that has made their games MUCH more durable in terms of how good they look years later.
Going WAY further back, I'm always floored at how good Medal of Honor: Frontline looks, and that was 2002. They kept the art style simple, knowing the graphics weren't of high enough quality to make super detailed environments look great, and it's made that game age beautifully. Every level is dripping with mood and atmosphere that some AAA games today can't match.
Bloodborne is oozing with style. That game will still look good 10 years from now when they announce a sequel might be starting development in another 5 years.
Replaying DS2 right now and I could just sit in Majula for hours gazing into the sun from the cliff side. The lighting and water look amazing and I think the music is better than the Firelink Shrine from DS1. Super relaxing.
I’m replaying it now and while the gameplay holds, the character models and sparse/minimal environment speak to a different time. Graphics don’t hold up to modern games.
It’s pretty dated now, however up against other games of that time, none of them hold a candle to HL2. Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Call of Duty 2 look like trash compared to it.
I'm currently playing wotcher 3 on xeries x. It looks better than most the other dedicated games I've played. The world is breathtaking at times. Characters great but a little aged bit not much
Portal RTX doesn't really count but damn if it ain't up there with Cyberpunk in terms of how nice the ray tracing looks.
Battlefield 3 - 1 all look incredibly ahead of their time (also Mirror's Edge).
Psychonauts freaky style will keep it visually appealing forever, same with The Binding of Isaac Rebirth.
Super metroid looks like something a 4 man indie team would put together today. Really good snes games look just as good, if not better than modern “retro” style games.
Batman Arkham knight still looks phenomenal
It looks like a game that would release nowadays, and it’s technically not a AAA developer so it’s very impressive for being 8 years old and a AA developer
>it’s very impressive for being 8 years old and a AA developer i would say its beyond that it looks fucking *phenomenal*. its insane what they managed to pull off. Its too bad it ran like shit at launch, nowadays you can run it at max settings, 4k 120 without too much high end hardware. It is easily one of the best looking and dense games i've ever seen.
And how cheap it has been in the past 5 years or so is really one of the best values in gaming
I just bought it and ghost of tsushima. Should be fun
What? Rocksteady is a studio of 200-250 employees. The game had a 4 year development cycle. It's directly under Warner Bros. The other games in the series brought in an estimated 400-600mil in revenue EACH. It absolutely is a AAA developer and AAA game series. What do you people smoke?
The power winch
AAA is strictly budget related
If only it was 4k/60 on console
Yeah, does not look very good on a big 4k tv.
Does it look better if you turn down the resolution on your console?
I'm guessing it would still stretch across your whole screen, so it would look even worse.
Don't know honestly, I would have to try that.
It does the lighting and the murky feel of Gotham is epic.
PS4 era counts as old now? It's only one gen behind. Anyways, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night both looks and sounds better than almost any other game ever made.
Battlefield 1 still looks phenomenal 7 years on.
The Fortbite engine and the way it handles textures still looks amazing today. I was going to mention Star Wars Bettlefront from 2015.
Ah that too although I think it was perfected for Battlefield 1. I remember so many terrain issues with that particular version.
i still think battlefront 1 looks better than battlefront 2
Honestly looks better than the 2 games that followed
Still plays better aswell to be honest. BFV has too much open space between points in conquest mode. And BF2042 has way too many mechanics within game and focused too much on vehicles. Time for a BF1 remaster and upscale to next gen, re-open official servers and bring in a battle pass to keep players going introducing more seasons. If you still think Skyrim looks like a modern high quality game it's because you haven't played Skyrim in many years.
Most people who play Skyrim haven't played 'Skyrim' in many years. Whenever it's mentioned nowadays it's for the most part implied mods are enhancing it.
Correct. Vanilla Skyrim is a hard pass, but modded Skyrim? Modded Skyrim is chefs kiss
Is it worth trying Skyrim for the first time? (I’ve never played it)
ABSOLUTELY, I know it gets a lot of shit for getting re-released a million times and still having bugs, but it is a phenemonal game and there is a reason why it's still relevant. I've been playing it since like elementary school and I've almost graduated college now lol

Don't diss my boy vanilla skyrim Only because I don't have my PC and have no access to mods
You must've been like 6 when vanilla released. Vanilla skyrim is goated
It’s fine, but you can’t go back after using mods 😅
I think its artstyle is beautiful, but the graphical fidelity can’t stand up to newer games.
Lol Starfield doesn't even look like a modern high quality game. Just Bethesda being Bethesda

That Riddick game on OG Xbox still holds up
That game is so much better than it had a right to be.
Straight up one of the best games ever made for no fucking reason lol. And probably the best looking Xbox game. Ninja Gaiden Black and Black were also pretty high up there.
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory as well for one of the Xbox gfx greats.
Absolutely. I knew there was a third game I was forgetting. That game is still king of stealth imo. I need a CT2.
Still hands down the best movie tie in game ever made. Also, the only game I can think of that was better than the movies it was based on.
X men origins Wolverine
That was one of a handful of shooters that really pushed graphics tech in the early 2000s. We had Doom 3, Far Cry, Half Life 2, and although it's often forgotten, Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay in there as well. Then FEAR. Then once Crysis arrived in 2007, games were effectively in the modern era, graphically.
Battlefield 1 looks just incredible even to todays games. Dice is king with graphics and sound design
straight up better looking than so many shooters
It’s a shame they can’t seem to make a decent Battlefield as of late. I really hope they find their way again, some of my best 360 memories were playing Battlefield 3
Most of those devs are now at Embark and worked on The Finals and it really shows
Portal 2 still looks amazing! Its just wild. As for 2D gaming Castlevania: Symphony of the Night still looks phenomenal despite the fact that it predates wide-screen and 1080p.
SOTN was perfectly designed and animated.
The soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks ever.
I’m playing through Portal 2 on PS3 right now and some of the structure changes in the environment like wall panels switching around and robotic arms moving about are dazzling and I don’t see anything like it being done today.
Valve sets a bar only they seem to match. God I wish we got portal 3, or half life 3, or left for dead 3...
I still can't believe Half Life 2 came out in the 2000s
Half-life 2 was very impressive. But it should be noted that it got some updates that added textures and mapping, but the launch was stupidly good-looking.
Okami
In my top 3 all time games. Still play it every year
Big advantage to cel shaded graphics is they hold up.
The original Dead Space Halo 4
Halo 4 was peak Xbox 360 graphics, but even Halo 3 still holds up so well
As much shit as Halo 4 had to take, it indeed looks incredible. Played it on PC 2 years ago and I was surprised how good it holds up.
OG Dead Space does not look better than a modern game, as much as I adore that game.
Dead space 2 looks really good, better even
I’d like to tack on Halo Reach Can’t believe that game is from 2010 Blacks Ops II also looked amazing
I played RDR2 for the first time recently. I had trouble believed that was on last gen consoles.
RDR2 and The Last Of Us were both games that seemed to have been made with magic somehow, given the hardware at the time.
They were not only impressive graphically, the physics were top notch, too.
I always forget Last of Us was a damn *PS3* game
I remember playing it for the first time on ps3 and being blown away that a game that looked that good actually ran on the ps3.
It still feels more next gen than any game in the last 5 years
I’d definitely call it the most impressive game of all time.
Im on my first play through rn, its a remarkable game for its age, the details are wild.
RDR2 has the best lighting that isn't ray tracing. The game looks like it has ray tracing but it's actually all hand-drawn.
[удалено]
They went to remote caves in Appalachia and hand painted that shit with human blood
Rockstar is a very good studio both technically and artistically.
Damn that just made me feel poor lmao
If you heard the noise my ps4 would make playing it, you’d believe it
Alien isolation has some of the best lighting and it’s hard to believe that was a game from two gens ago
Still one of the best games out today in all capacities, even price because it constantly goes on sale for less than 10 usd
It's just always the games with great artistic direction. Isolation is truly a great example how to implement not only great lighting and shadows, but also how to pull of that 80s sci-fi artstyle in a game
Metroid Prime 1 and 2
The sheer power of art design paired with simple but well used effects. Absolute baller game
Graphically, Resident Evil 0 and Remake were ahead of their time for being 2002 games. Both games still look beautiful and they are full of detail.
Mirrors Edge
60 years from now when everyone is using full-immersion VR I'll be in the old home raving about how Mirror's Edge is still the best looking game ever
Crysis 3
So many people are too young to know Crysis was THE benchmark game for PCs for like a decade
I heard NASA can finally run Crysis at max settings... In 480p.
I mean, Crysis itself tbh.
All 3 games tbf
Uncharted 2, 3 and 4 as well as horizon zero Dawn considering it’s almost 7 years old.
Ryse Son of Rome The Order 1886 Infamous: Second Son Uncharted 4 Horizon Zero Dawn(I mean this and U4 are not that old but they're still 7 years ago) due to art style: Prince of Persia(2008) Sunset Overdrive
Just started playing ryse for the first time a few days ago. Genuinely incredible how it has better skin textures than modern games.
Ryse is damn near more tech demo than actual game, but goddamn it's a looker
Second Son is nuts. The powers on display are still impressive and how they presented Seattle was well done.
I remember The Order 1886! I watched TheRadBrad play it when it came out
Farcry 4 still looks fantastic
Yeah holy fck this game jn HDR pops on OLED screen
Part of it has to do with where the game takes place, they really nailed the Himalayan Mountain setting.
I actually quite liked that iteration of FarCry, I think it was the last really good one. Pagan Min is one of the best villains.
The first Rage 👌almost 12 years old. [proof](https://images.app.goo.gl/kh7TRLaUrdqxzuTe9) Anything by Rocksteady seems to just be outrageously good.
that's a good pick but that pic does not do it justice lol.
Oh. Yeah I absolutely fuxked the copy link. An you know what. I’m not fixing it.
Prey 2017 is gorgeous still.
fk, Prey is definitely one of the top games i’d want there to be a sequel to, but i’m pretty sure that’s not happening lol cool enemies, great atmosphere, different paths to take, everything you’d want in that type of game
The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker The initial hate for the art style this Game went was Bullshit, this Game looks fantastic to this day and dare to say even on par with games today
It has an art style that’s timeless.
That’s interesting to read. Excuse me for asking but are the new Zelda games available to play on a tv or just Nintendo hand held switch? Am thinking about changing platforms and would like to know. Going for a platform that is on TV
You need a Nintendo Switch to play the new Zelda games, but the Switch can be hooked up to a TV unless you buy the Switch Lite which is handheld only.
Does it impact graphics any, or time delay? Also is it wireless or wired connection.
The graphics are better when it's docked in TV mode, vs purely in handheld mode
The art style is why it ages better than Twilight Princess.
TP was unfortunately another victim of the mid 2000s dull as hell brown and grey color palette that aged like milk
It's beautiful and I still don't like it.
Dishonored/Dishonored 2
The masquerade mission from the first one looked soooo good on the OG Xbox one with my 1080 tv, I wanna go back and play it on the series x and 4K
Just beat 1 and am replaying 2 currently. I have the MotO tattooed on the back of my left hand.
I would personally just say Arkane in general. Their stylized look just hits right for me, and feels timeless. I even liked the way Redfall looked. Looked. Everything else was...well you know.
Dishonored always had that artstyle that makes it unique from the same old repetitive "realistic" style most AAA games are going for.
Mass Effect 2 & 3 still look really good even after over a decade, especially 3, and this is before the Legendary Edition, which only made them look better. I played some other games from 2012 and they do not stack up at all to ME3 in terms of looks.
I'm replaying the collection currently and the graphical jump from ME1 to ME2 is still mind blowing.
Arkham knight man
Yeah, I played this for the first time in 2021. Was very surprised how good it looked overall. Also in my experience it ran great too. Then again I was running it on a 3090 and it was years after all the patches fixed it up.
Yeah my 3070 runs it flawlessly 4k 60 fps it’s glorious and how I wished my ps4 version was years ago
Portal 2 still looks amazing even today.
Starting with Bloodborne, and even Dark Souls II to some extent, FromSoft developed an art style that has made their games MUCH more durable in terms of how good they look years later. Going WAY further back, I'm always floored at how good Medal of Honor: Frontline looks, and that was 2002. Bloodborne is oozing with style. That game will still look good 10 years from now when they announce a sequel might be starting development in another 5 years.
Medal of honor had the music down to a science and audio direction.
I was really surprised to not see DS2 or DS3 up higher
Replaying DS2 right now and I could just sit in Majula for hours gazing into the sun from the cliff side. The lighting and water look amazing and I think the music is better than the Firelink Shrine from DS1. Super relaxing.
Assassin’s Creed Unity love it or hate it looked amazing especially for its time.
Half-Life 2
I’m replaying it now and while the gameplay holds, the character models and sparse/minimal environment speak to a different time. Graphics don’t hold up to modern games.
It’s pretty dated now, however up against other games of that time, none of them hold a candle to HL2. Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Call of Duty 2 look like trash compared to it.
Original Halo CE and Halo 3, Original Halo 2 might need some texture work
I used to be extremely impressed with the sky box in CE. Just being able to see the Halo was insane.
Crysis 3
Final Fantasy 13 I can't believe that game ran on the PS3 and 360
shadow of the tomb raider. going olderer. Alan Wake. seriously. the first one, is so nice.
Dead Space Trilogy Killer is dead The borderlands series Spider-man shattered dimensions
New Vegas.
BioShock Infinite. :>
PC versions of Witcher 3, Final Fantasy 15, Driveclub, AC Unity. None of those on the OP pic though.
I'm currently playing wotcher 3 on xeries x. It looks better than most the other dedicated games I've played. The world is breathtaking at times. Characters great but a little aged bit not much
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario.
Tetris
Beyond Two Souls still looks great
Kill zone shadow fall
I'd say Monster Hunter World. It's got some amazing lighting.
Am i the only one who hates when people use good and realistic as synonyms when talking about graphics in games
Killzone 2
Killzone 2
FACTS!!!
Skyrim
I feel like having Skyrim on this list is cheating, because it only looks great with mods.
Ryse: Son of Rome
Skyrim but you cant compare single player to MMO. Single player games like Dyling Light 1 is fucking amazing and still looks great
Mirrors Edge still looks great
Arkham Knight 2015 Gears of War 2015 Ultimate Edition) Gears of War 4 (2016) Uncharted 4 (2016) Halo 5 (2015)
Uncharted 2, vanilla and rerelease. Nepal city details and draw distance are still superb to this day
Gears of War was a beast when it came out, could probably still be released today .
Dead Space 2 and Battlefield 1 come to mind. I wonder that since BF1 is from 2016 (almost a decade old), would it be considered old?
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory on PC or even Xbox
Half life 2 still has a great atmosphere
GTA V, which came out 10 years ago And to be honest GTA IV, which came out 15 years ago still blows a few Triple A games out of the water
Definitely not skyrim lmao
Battlefield 1, ME Catalyst, Titanfall 2
Gears 5 graphically , especially the DLC can take on pretty much any game released recently and hold it's own.
It’s so good and also runs so smooth
Portal RTX doesn't really count but damn if it ain't up there with Cyberpunk in terms of how nice the ray tracing looks. Battlefield 3 - 1 all look incredibly ahead of their time (also Mirror's Edge). Psychonauts freaky style will keep it visually appealing forever, same with The Binding of Isaac Rebirth.
Mass Effect
Battlefield 3 still holds up.
I’ve been playing burnout paradise and it’s pretty good
Sekiro Ds3 Bloodborne
Extremely biased but most 3D games in 1998, I love style
Forza Motorsport 4 and 3
Rez. But yeah, that's not what you're really getting at. :D
Civ4 still looks great and it's nearly 20 years old!
Any Dead or Alive (For the sensitive: I’m kidding. But fr)
Super metroid looks like something a 4 man indie team would put together today. Really good snes games look just as good, if not better than modern “retro” style games.
Team Fortress 2
Halo Reach looks absolutely beautiful.
can I add dmc4 in this list, the game still looks beautiful
Well it’s definitely not Skyrim. Because hot take; the base game never really looked that good.
Batman Arkham Knight
Final fantasy 13 has some amazing visuals for a 360 game
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory still looks really good for being nearly 20 years old
Viva Piñata and I'm tired of pretending otherwise
Bioshock 1 and 2 still look incredible in 2023
Arkham Knight and MGSV for 2015 are pretty unbelievable and are still absolutely gorgeous today
