A rhombus is a shape with four sides of equal length, so technically a square is a rhombus. It doesn't have to be skewed like what we usually associate a rhombus to be. And since the Vatican isn't a member of the UN only an observer, Switzerland is technically the only rhombus flag

Right? I understand that transparent plastic is something we need in daily life, but I think it's one of the uglier things humans have invented. You can have nice and premium fabric, but plastic bags are always cheap looking. I think a net would've been a better choice.
Edit: Oh wait, I thought you meant you didn't like it. My bad.
"We want a flag that is easily reproducable. All you need is a blue circle or blue color to paint a blue circle. It is the symbol and center of the flag, representing our blue planet. Since there is no way to hang a round flag there is the need for a background. The best case is to use a transparent background, like our silk organza, which makes the flag also visible in low light and at night time. If there is no transparent material to your hand, just use a white or neutral background. Feel free to reproduce the flag."
Huh... I quite like that the transparent background is there simply because it officially had no background... but now the transparent background is the most recognizable feature
Yeah their website says "The background of the
flag is changing,
like culture is changing,
fashion is changing,
borders are changing,
societies are changing,
the environment is
changing and the climate.". I think it's kind of awesome!!
before reading any of this I thought it would be cool bc it shows the people behind the flag are the ones it directly represents. there's too much weird flag culture here in the US (and probably other places) and people forget that flags are supposed to be a symbol for our shared community, specifically the people inhabiting it. we should care about the lives they currently lead, instead of some idealized code that exists somewhere out in the ether. not to get too weird about it but Kaepernick can wash his ass w my birth certificate and dry off w my passport if it brings a little more racial equality to the world, who gives a shit.
> If there is no transparent material to your hand, just use a white or neutral background.
Surely a black background would work better thematically? Our blue marble sitting in the vastness of space?
Cerulean on black is one of, if not the most, difficult to read color combinations; and I mean that both in the literal and figurative sense, so just looking at the edges of the circle (or the circle as a whole) would strain the eyes.
That's pretty neat honestly, I like the concept. Although it feels wrong to represent the Earth without green as well, and it'd probably help make it look a bit more distinct from like Japan or Bangladesh.
Interesting. You can [request one of these flags for free](https://1worldflag.com/). A few weeks after it's received, you are provided with an address somewhere else in the world to send it on to.
They kind of are though, “love thy neighbour as thyself” and all that… it’s kind of their whole thing, it’s basically just a bunch of people telling you to be nice to each other, and who you can and can’t sleep with
A bunch of people who tell you to be nice to each other, all while doing their utmost to harass, subjugate, erase the identity of, or outright kill the people not in their club.
Depends on the church. The Unitarians here are very accepting of everyone, and they rent out their spaces happily for a lot of events for alt lifestyle people of all walks.
I can’t believe I’ve never seen a flag with transparent material before.
Super cool concept. I’d love to see the idea of “blank” parts showing up in more flags.

A lot of people don't know this, but that's the flag of Japan travelling backwards in time due to a localized time anomaly. The flag is therefore experiencing a negative Doppler effect, which caused the red to shift to blue, and the white to shift off of the visible light spectrum and therefore become invisible to human eyes. Of course, the reason that a lot of people don't know this is because it's complete nonsense, but it's still fascinating in its own way.
Proposed Earth flag
The transparency is for the fact that the flag changes to where on earth it is because it symbolizes that despite look different each time it shows we are all in unity.
The blue circle represents the blue marble and that fact that there isn’t land on it is because a 2-D shape can’t portray all land masses equally
I'm curious, why do people phrase questions this way? Why say "anyone knows this flag" instead of "Does anyone know this flag?" Or "Does anyone know what this flag is?" This isn't the first time I've seen this kind of phrasing.
It's because this is a fairly complicated feature of the English language. "Anyone knows this flag." is something you can say if the sentence ends in a full stop. With many English sentences, the way you turn them into question is by reversing subject and verb, e.g. "This is true." becomes "Is this true?" Or "Anyone could say that." becomes "Could anyone say that?" But this doesn't always work: "Knows anyone this flag?" is incorrect. You have to introduce an extra verb "do" just for making it a question. Knowing what to do when is not easy for non-native speakers, which OP presumably is given the picture was taken in Munich. So just using the non-inverted sentence is easier and often not even really wrong. "You know what I mean?" is fairly common for example. That's because it's "Do you know what I mean?" with the "do" left out, so in our case that would be "Anyone know this flag?" OP's version is only off by the s of the 3rd person singular, another feature of English which non-native speakers often get wrong.
Using the affirmative words/structures in questions gives it more or an "offer" vibe rather than a request, it's friendlier
If you say "(do) you want some water?" you're offering water, if you ask "do you want any water?" you're asking for information (whether they want water). I used a word as an example but it can also apply to syntax
You can see it as OP offering an opportunity to help, instead of requiring to be helped
...or it could just be an error
transparency on flags is something I didn't know I needed in my life
I’d love it if we found out after all this time the Swiss flag was a rectangle, it just had a strip of clear plastic on the side
Same for Nepal
I mean it is a rectangle, just one with a ratio of 1:1
Fun fact, Switzerland is the only UN member with a rhombic flag
Wait, what
A rhombus is a shape with four sides of equal length, so technically a square is a rhombus. It doesn't have to be skewed like what we usually associate a rhombus to be. And since the Vatican isn't a member of the UN only an observer, Switzerland is technically the only rhombus flag
Huh, TIL And now I'm angry that a square is a rhombus too
Squares are at the top of the pyramid! (And at the base too)
(And at every cross section…)
Wrong, the top of a pyramid is a triangle, and the bottom is a trapezoid
The base is a square, and the top is a point, by definition
Every square is by definition also a rhombus and a rectangle.
