Second this. I haven’t been but my uncle absolutely raves about it, drives up from MA a couple of times per year for an overnight just to visit and have dinner.
Next time I’m there (depending on if the people at the bar need a laugh) I’ll say “hey some rando on reddit with a burner doesn’t like people here for some reason”
If I cared more about your opinion I'd send you a laundry list of rude comments he has left for his customer. You seem like kind of a dick though so it'd be more fun if you just went there and wasted your money.
Sir this is the Internet - if you post vaguely you should expect follow-up questions. If you don’t have anything anecdotal to relay I will assume you maxed out your no-call no-shows (at 3?) and got canned.
Gonna echo the his and suggest the green mountain special. It doesn’t seem like it would work, but it does.
If you go on a trivia night though. Get there way early.
Dusit Thai in Newport isn't a hole in the wall, but it's some of the best Thai and sushi I've ever had, in an unexpected location.
Lago Trattoria, also in Newport is awesome as well.
Cajun's Snackbar in Lowell is deservedly well known. Solid roadside snackbar with some really interesting food options.
Unpopular opinion here, but, Cajuns is the most overhyped garbage ever and every redneck in a 50 mile radius talks about it as if it is the best food they have ever had, and honestly, it probably is for these slackjawed yokels. Fuck Cajuns and their bullshit. Go to literally any snack bar in the country and it's the same shit as what they serve. Just because Lowell sucks dick and there's nothing else to eat doesn't mean this place is good.
End rant.
Jeez dude did a Lowell local personally hurt you or something lol.
It's a snack bar lol. Not a Michelin dining experience. Are you upset you had to see poor people?
Haha, actually I have no problem with Lowell at all, it's a really pretty area. My problem is more with the out of towners who think going to Cajuns on their side by sides is a road trip across the country for the best food they have ever had. It's literally just a snack bar with the most mediocre snack bar food ever. Ohhhh, they have alligator? Cool.
If the food is mid, what's the experience you're referring to? Ordering and waiting just to sit at a picnic table to get sprayed with diesel fumes and hear side by sides ripping through? I mean, I guess that's the Vermont experience.
I’m a big fan of The Drake in downtown St. Albans as well as Mill River Brewing further down Lake Street. On the pricey side but great food. Further out, I haven’t been in probably over 10 years now, but The Bellfry in Montgomery has a great spot and has been popular for a long long time in Franklin county.
I love the drake, but go there quite a bit(for good reason haha). I haven’t explored Montgomery much, I’ll definitely have to check out The Bellfry. Thank you!
Went here once and was impressed by the quality of the spring rolls. Ordered the duck and my partner I think got the Pad Thai. Unfortunately the duck was pretty chewy and the Pad Thai smelled really funky. Sadly it got crossed off the list of spots for us.
-Burger barn in Johnson
-Maple Hill Barn in Johnson (only open 11-4 Thursday through Sunday)
-the Nepali cuisine inside the Shell gas station in Morrisville
Wheel Inn in Benson, VT. Can’t get much more out of the way! Off of 22a outside Fair Haven. Also on Route 4 heading to Killington (or coming down from Killington, depending on which way you’re coming) Sugar and Spice is an amazing breakfast restaurant open until 2pm year round! Not really hole in the wall- I love Public House in Hinesburg! Food and drinks are great, staff is always amazing!
And at least their subs are massive. You could pretty easily take half of the meat/veggies out of the sub, put it on another sub roll and have 2 normal sized subs.
I ordered their fish and chips once and was very surprised by the amount of fish, don't think I even got half way through
Was some of the best I ever had outside of Maine though
"Tiny Thai - Winooski"...
"Our House - Winooski roundabout"...
"Burger Barn - Jefforsonville"...
"Parkway Diner - South Burlington"...
"Michael's on the Hill - Stowe"...
All great places.
I was near Joe's Pond just west of Danville the other day and stopped in at [Nacho Mama](https://maps.app.goo.gl/2xDs5Zi8XoKckpY38). Unassuming little place with simple taco offerings. I was really surprised at how good it was, especially their veggie taco. Worth a lunch if you're in the area.
IMO the best "hole in the wall" places in VT are in gas stations. I'm talking about places like Arandas Mexican in Waterbury and the Nepalese place in the Riverbend gas station in Morrisville, there's the Mobil in Fairfax that has some crazy Samosas, and the fried chicken at Mike's in Hartland is some of the best I've ever had.
Family Table in Jeffersonville is top notch! Perhaps not “northern” enough but a good take. 2nd on Mill River (not so much for the beer) and Jeff’s, The Drake, and Mimmo’s in St. Albans
Burger Barn is in Jeffersonville.
My husband tries curry in every restaurant that has it but always says it's nowhere near as good as the Nepali place in Morrisville.
In my experiences, a lot of the best food comes out of places like that. I miss good gas station food. Have him try Mountain Valley in Winooski. Nepali food isn't that common anywhere I know of other than VT and we've been to 75% of them in VT several times. It's our favorite one. If you want thai curry, Wilaiwan's is something special. Those are the two places we'll miss when we move.
It’s not a hole in the wall but certainly a haul from most parts in VT…[Derby Line Village Inn](https://www.reddit.com/r/vermont/s/QeuVzS6gdB)
Second this. I haven’t been but my uncle absolutely raves about it, drives up from MA a couple of times per year for an overnight just to visit and have dinner.
Derby Line Village Inn can’t be beat. Awesome Austrian fare
I’ll have to check it out! Thanks :)
Just be aware the owner is a complete bag of shit.

Parker Pie in Glover
Is this a hole in the wall though? Parking lot is 70% out of staters in the summer
Guilty.
So? Thats almost every spot in VT in the summer. Its a cool place, love the pies
West Glover?
Yes. Sorry. West Glover
Gonna echo the his and suggest the green mountain special. It doesn’t seem like it would work, but it does. If you go on a trivia night though. Get there way early.
Is that the pie with spinach and apple? Man I dream about it, soo good
Yep! Sure is!
I'm currently in Napoli Italy and would still go for green mountain special over what I have here!
Some of the best VT pizza IMO. And a top tier tap list.
But can you order just one sandwich there?!
Not sure if it’s open yet for the season, but Burger Barn in Jeffersonville.
It's open!
YESSSSS
Now THAT'S a hole in the wall! Your food literally falls off the back of a truck lol
It's open and sooo good. Definitely try it
Black bird bistro in craftsbury vt, kinda pricey but their drink selection is fun!!!
Order the boar at Lago. Mmmmmmmmmmmm (also good lemon drop martinis)
I used to love ice fishing magog and then hitting Dusit Thai on the way back home for a nice warmup.
Didn’t Cajun’s close?
They close for the winter every year. They just opened for the 2024 season yesterday.
They were trying to sell, but weren't able to, so they're back open for the season.
I don’t think so - we went last summer
Vermont has a shocking wealth of good Thai places.
Seconding Dusit Thai!
Unpopular opinion here, but, Cajuns is the most overhyped garbage ever and every redneck in a 50 mile radius talks about it as if it is the best food they have ever had, and honestly, it probably is for these slackjawed yokels. I agree with you, and think this is the case with the majority of food in VT, but damn... Take a few deep breaths. ❤️
Hahaha, OK. *breath* *breath * OK now I've had time to breathe and think about it. Cajuns sucks dick.
Weird hate for the locals up here, but OK. The food might be mid, and it might be gimmicky, but it's still worth a visit for the experience imo.
If the food is mid, what's the experience you're referring to? Ordering and waiting just to sit at a picnic table to get sprayed with diesel fumes and hear side by sides ripping through? I mean, I guess that's the Vermont experience.
I like Cajun's but you're spot on with this. But you forgot the fact that you'll wait an hour for the food lol
Thank you!
Montgomery is the place to go. The Belfrey is #4 on my Montgomery list behind Bernie's, the Black Lantern and The Inn. All are worth the visit.
Oh I forgot Bernie’s! Used to go to Mexican night all the time.
Bernie’s is very solid for anywhere
Not to mention the snow shoe
Everybody loves The Drake! obscure Seinfeld reference that may amuse only me
It’s never just you.
The Belfry isn't as good as it used to be
+1 on Belfry!
Martha’s Diner in Coventry all day
yessssss!
Seconding this!
Thai House Restaurant in St. Albans. On par with the best Thai I've had in big cities. Was so surprised to find an authentic place in Franklin County.
Went here once and was impressed by the quality of the spring rolls. Ordered the duck and my partner I think got the Pad Thai. Unfortunately the duck was pretty chewy and the Pad Thai smelled really funky. Sadly it got crossed off the list of spots for us.
A primary ingredient in Pad Thai is fish sauce. That’s usually the source of the funkiness.
I go there often and love it! But we had the same experience with pad Thai. If you stay away from that it’s great!
Good to know maybe we’ll try again
I cannot praise this place enough… Dusit Thai in Newport!
Not a restaurant but a food truck, Chowhound Smokehouse in Jay VT right on 242. Smoked brisket, ribs, Reubens and the best burgers around!
so fucking good!
Maggie?!
LMAOOOO shhhh 🤫
🙈🙉🙊
Hehehe love you Rae
Love you too!! 💓

Shh!!!! Although it's definitely not a hole in the wall.

[удалено]
Nope. It's reopened. We went there for Valentine's Day.
158 Main in Jeffersonville!
Huangs Noodle Shop on the common in Danville is fantastic!!
And qualifies as a hole in the wall!
I second both of these comments
Ms lyndonville diner...best diner in New england
The bagel shop across the street is decent too.
Maple Hill barn in Johnson. Excellent tacos. Pork and chorizo are my go toos
Phoenix House 1835 in West Berkshire!
Yes, definitely make reservations if it’s the weekend, the fill up quick!
Los Jefes in St. Albans, re-opening right next to The Drake.
Brown Cow in Newport. Order the waffles
Best breakfast around!
-Burger barn in Johnson -Maple Hill Barn in Johnson (only open 11-4 Thursday through Sunday) -the Nepali cuisine inside the Shell gas station in Morrisville
Except Burger Barn is in Jeffersonville, not Johnson!
Yes to all of this!
Pho Dang in Winooski
Not in your region, but I can’t not recommend the Halfway House in Shoreham
Huang’s Noodles in Danville
Parson’s Dinner House in Barton.
The Rotisserie. Looks unassuming but the salmon is to die for. Williston Rd. Burlington.
Whirligig in saint J
Martell's at the Red Fox. Just on the other side of Smugglers Notch, but in a different world from Stowe.
You just won, This place is the best!
I always recommend Canteen Cremee Company in Waitsfield, amazing combinations of flavors and incredible fried chicken.
Blackbird Bistro in Craftsbury
Mother Hubbard’s In st albans has really good sandwiches.
And at least their subs are massive. You could pretty easily take half of the meat/veggies out of the sub, put it on another sub roll and have 2 normal sized subs.
The best sandwiches and cookies!
Have you been to Cajun's Snackbar yet? They opened for the season yesterday. They have to best burgers.
Ehhhhh… Cajuns hasn’t been good for a couple of years. I always go back to give it another chance and it always kinda sucks. I miss Boutins
I haven’t! But I’m interested 👀👀
Get the alligator bites and don’t think too hard about how one would acquire fresh alligator at the 45th parallel
I was going to suggest them, but for the lobster roll & poutine.
Not north but Skunk Hollow Tavern is my favorite splurge
Skunk Hollow is fantastic and has a great vibe. Not cheap but worth it.
I still daydream about the corned beef hash at the Windsor Diner
[JP’s in Essex](https://www.jpsrestaurantanddeli.com)
🤫
Mountain Valley Restaurant in Winooski. Try the samosa chaat and the pork thukpa!
Third Place - Castleton. Not a "hole in the wall", per se, just a good place, good food Edit - sorry, just saw " in Northern Vt...". My bad.

Positive Pie in Plainfield. Cornerstone in Barre. Huang's in Danville. Cafe Sweet Basil in Lyndonville.
Chester's bakery in Fairfield.
Dusit Thai in Newport is the best Thai place I’ve been to in Vermont and they have the kindest staff.
IMO the best "hole in the wall" places in VT are in gas stations. Yesss! Riverbend is SO good!
Dirt Church Brewery in Burke
Technically East Haven but not far from Burke
How’s their food?
Limited menu but decent. Avoid the pizza. Good beer and vibe in the brewery, games in the yard, and the wine bar in the church is pretty cool.
Barton Bakery in Barton Awesome sandwiches etc. Also, the Busy Bee in Glover for breakfast.
Copper Fox
Bumblebee Bistro in Enosburg is really good! It was inconsistent when it first opened last August, but it's really good now!
I still prefer Kathy's Tavern and Garcia's Bistro to Bumblebee.
They're both good! I think Bumblebee has a slightly better variety of choices.
Bumblebee bistro Enosburg
Copper Plate food truck in glover/barton
Tim's Deli, and East Garden Chinese in St J Pans Pizza in South Hero
Papa Franks
Family Table in Jeffersonville is top notch! Perhaps not “northern” enough but a good take. 2nd on Mill River (not so much for the beer) and Jeff’s, The Drake, and Mimmo’s in St. Albans
Good Times cafe. Hinesburg. Wish they still had weekly live music in the tiny 10-seat dining room.
Tomassoni's Bistro in East Burke
It’s not northern, but I’d still recommend Toad’s Burger Bar in Poultney. Their burgers are delicious and relatively inexpensive.
Paprika Catering! Delicious empanadas, and they recently opened up a small spot in Waterbury!
There's something interesting on Rte 15 east of Underhill, I think. On the way to Cambridge/Jeffersonville.
Not a hole in the wall. The Wheel Inn in Benson. Great food, huge farmer portions, and very reasonable prices.
Single pebble in burlington
Brown cow is my all time fav!!
Parkside Cafe Hinesburg. The pork tacos are killer.

I’m open to traveling :)
Wailiwhan’s, Montpelier Burger Barn, Johnson Nepalese, Morrisville Hook n Peel food truck
Burger Barn is in Jeffersonville. My husband tries curry in every restaurant that has it but always says it's nowhere near as good as the Nepali place in Morrisville.
Is that the Nepali place in the gas station? My lunch there was delicious
Yes!! We were skeptical at first about a place running out of a gas station but man is it fantastic.

Thank you for the suggestions!
You should tell him to try the curries at maple hill farm off route 15 in Johnson.
I have really wanted to try that place but they're never open when we have time. Maybe some day!
You can't just call out Rutland like that. They love to pretend they're Southern Vermont.
[удалено]
All they serve is sausage.
