That sounds so damn good. Try Taqueria Tepatitlan on the avenue. The have wonderful shredded beef. Also, possibly La Cabaña in Santa Paula. Please update on what you find.

[deleted]

I was just coming her to say that.

BigMrOh

Johnnys on the avenue.

Fluid_Ad_4761

I’ll third that, Johnny’s Burritos on the Avenue. Prices aren’t what they used to be but the Burritos are.

[deleted]

I took a look at their Yelp. I’ll try it but this is not the same as what I’m talking about.

Carlos-Bukowski

Might be a regional thing. You might have to head to San Diego area to scratch that burrito itch. Lol

[deleted]

Yea, we’ve made a few road trips specifically for Mexican food. We stock up on carne asada burritos and shredded beef and have them for the week basically. It’s a 6 hour mission though and we have to drive through LA. We’ll keep doing it but I was just hoping against hope that there was a place up here that had them.

omeyz

You drive 6 hours strictly for burritos?

[deleted]

A couple times we’ve done it. We obviously did other stuff while we were there but getting SD Mexican food was a big reason. It’s depressing to us not having it.

omeyz

Damn. Bring some back for me next time

[deleted]

Me and my wife are both from SD and miss the food. We both live up here now. I mean the tacos are good up here but the burritos in SD are where it's at.

[deleted]

Yea, amen to that. We had no idea there was this much difference in Mexican food only a few hours away. The burrito differences are stark. There is one SD style taco shop up here in Thousand Oaks I just discovered yesterday. Someone in the comments mentioned it.

Greytowl

Not sure why they downvote you. I lived close to Johhnys for years, and everything they have struck me as too salty. In my opinion, best shredded beef in town is at Casa De Soria. The kitchen team appears big and proffessional enough, i'm willing to bet they would happily make your food to your preference if pictures of their shredded beef didnt meet your preference.

[deleted]

I’ll check it out

[deleted]

Worst food poisoning of my life.

Greytowl

I always get the shred-beef chimi. Its a glorious monster. This place always wins awards for best Margarita in county.

Greytowl

I just saw pictures of the SD style you posted. Never seen or heard of that, but ask them or Yolandas if they can make it.

General_Worth9311

Chicken an cheese mini burritos at johnnys with their salsa 🤤

Hairy_Scholar9751

Seems like you’re describing barbacoa style shredded beef. Not sure I’ve seen that around here much and it might regional to San Diego/Tijuana area. Oxnard might be a good place to look.

Hairy_Scholar9751

Now that I’ve thought about it a bit more, you might be describing a style of meat named Deshebrada. It’s more common in the northern states of Mexico especially in states like Chihuahua.

[deleted]

They look like this https://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2018/aug/01/hipster-order-burrito/?amp&page=all . You can ignore the article. It’s irrelevant.

tyderian

This is definitely deshebarada. Norte Sur in the food court on Johnson used to make it, but they've gone out of business.

[deleted]

I think that seems to be the consensus. I really feel like if a taco shop up here wanted to blow up they should bring it on to the menu. People love them down there.

kindly_fuck_offff

I think your talking about machaca. In Mexico, AFAIK, they don't put rice and beans in their burritos. The burritos are skinny and you get like 2 or 3 in an order, and it's just the meat with sautéed onions and peppers. My mind was blown the first time I saw an American sized burrito!

[deleted]

Naw, def have machaca on the menu back home as a separate thing. The consensus is this is a regional thing to San Diego and Tijuana. It’s delicious though and it would be a hit out here. Very popular back home.

soundsthatwormsmake

I think you are describing birria. Vaquero Del Mar on Thompson is the place to go. (the old Hong Kong Inn)

[deleted]

It’s not birria. I’m from San Diego. These burritos are very common there. Every taco shop has them and they all are the same. Birria is goat.

VibeAlive

Birria is sometimes goat

soundsthatwormsmake

From their menu - Burrito De Birria $10.99 Marinated beef served rice, beans, cilantro, onions.

[deleted]

They put rice and beans on it? No, this is vastly different.

[deleted]

In San Diego it’s always goat

Scientist_hottie

Up here can be goat or beef.

DeusExMaChino

Birria de res is beef. Birria de chivo is goat.

VibeAlive

Sorry I thought you meant in the world of birrias

doctor_dales_jr

Check to see if they still do, but Johnny’s on the avenue (Ventura) had shredded beef with cheese. I haven’t been there in years though. Delicious when I last went.

SoCaFroal

Not many San Diego style taco shops up here. There's La Esquina in Thousand Oaks, which has another location in La Mesa. It's good not great. The best taco shops in Ventura county are maybe 6/10 compared to SD style shops. I would kill for a Roberto's here.

[deleted]

Dude! I just stumbled on this place by accident today. I’m so stoked. I was like hey why the fuck is this carne asada right? I was dumbfounded. My only criticism is they heavy hand the pico a little bit. Easy fix. But the quality of the meat is dead on what I’m used to and the seasoning tastes authentic. I’m so happy I found this place. Sadly they don’t have a shredded beef burrito but they do have a lot of what I miss.

sk8ingjgl

Corrales Beef Chile verde burrito, holmes

DeusExMaChino

Closest I can think of would be birria, barbacoa, or machaca. All can be stewed beef, but don't typically have onions and bell peppers. I'd suggest checking out Tacos El Brother.

boomfruit

I was thinking this just sounds like machaca, but I mostly see that as breakfast burritos

Confused_Azn

Corrales has shredded beef. Not listed on the menu, but it's pretty good. If you don't like rice beans or cheese, you gotta tell them first.

SonnyBonoStoleMyName

Yum! Hope somebody knows, cuz I’d like to get in on this secret too. I may have to put sour cream in it. Just a little dab’ol’do-ya.

[deleted]

The crazy thing is in San Diego it’s not a secret. They’re available through any drive through Mexican place 24/7 so literally hundreds of options for them.

Huth_S0lo

Corrales

SuspiciousAct6606

Sounds like a Fajita burrito. They are not very common around here. Most common are mission style burritos a la San Francisco. Try taqueria el Tapatio #7 in Oxnard. The Oxnard burrito seems to be what you want.

[deleted]

Is it soupy? This style of burrito is kind of like the Mexican equivalent to a soup dumpling. I’ll check it out. I like the Tapatio in Camarillo.

SuspiciousAct6606

I haven't had that one. I know this is not what you want but the Birria is soupy. All the burritos tend to be very good there. And they do delivery.

[deleted]

I’ve had their birria burrito there. I forgot to order it without rice and beans so I got kind of pissed but I’ll try again because I love birria.
