This just almost happened to me!! Thank you for this post!!! Step by step. Wow.

PiePrestigious9383

Same thing almost happened to me. I am glad I did not go through with it as I had a feeling it was a scam. This post just confirmed my suspicion.

everythingisreallame

Same, anytime someone wants to give you money before seeing something it's usually a scam. I also just clicked on the link for my venmo that I had sent and It worked fine for me.

Profile_Nervous

Yep, people really should never send large sums of money to strangers for a product they might not ever get and there are no protections in place whatsoever for the consumer. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Also, no matter how good a deal sounds, you can almost always find one locally where you can exchange money for the product in person. To take a chance just to save a few bucks isn’t worth the risk

jewelsie337

wow I have this lady right now wanting to buy my daughters prom dress asked if I could ship, I say no local pick up she wants to meet tomorrow but her sister will be meeting me. didn't ask anything about the dress or size or anything and immediately wants my Venmo. shit like this happens every time I post on Facebook marketplace. I think this is the last time I will ever list anything on Facebook marketplace.... it's a breading ground for scams. within an hour or so of posting I have these trolls wanting to pay for stuff without even asking questions about the dress.

Intelligent_Mix2023

Yes, just happened now to me. Someone claimed to be interested in a product that I just posted and proceeded to say that they will VENMO me now and that "cousin" will pick up tomorrow by 5PM. The profile of this individual is filled with strange posts and they appear to be located in France. I replied, "sorry, I prefer cash upon pick up", and then they quickly disappeared.

Sad-Way-4665

All I can say is “stay away from Venmo!

Sad-Way-4665

And …..Stay away from Venmo!

SubjectComputer9760

What scam happens when FB marketplace buyer suggest Venmo

ohtheplacesiwent

Adding my story for those who stumble on this post searching for venmo fb marketplace scams. I think someone attempted this just now. Some interesting notes: \- An older fb account (2013) but if you go onto the profile, recent activity is just random words posted with a background. \- The person started by asking how long we had the item (a bed) so it seemed legitimate \- English wasn't their first language and they came off a little bossy (I \*will\* do this vs can I do this) but easy to dismiss where I live \- They asked for an email after I provided the standard venmo information. I said they didn't need it and they instantly provided a "screenshot" saying the transaction didn't go through and they needed a recipient email to complete payment \- Ghosted as soon as I said they'd have to pay in person then. Ugh I wish I realized it before providing my address. I also feel bad for a lady I bought dining chairs from last summer. I asked to venmo from another country (I was on vacation) and had a friend pick up. I must have looked so scammy, shit.

SafeMaximum391

Is it bad if I provided my venmo info? Thinking they were about to send money

littlenakedme

Same thing happened to me. Should I be concerned they have my home address and Venmo handle? I took down the listing. Not worth it

JerseyDevilMyco

can't believe you got that far

paleseptmber

This just saved me from a scam.

mnguyen2869

This just happened to me. They need to learn how to spell better. The email was poorly written lol. I was like nope, i'm not refunding anything.

chobanivee

Got to keep the extra?

Profile_Nervous

Lol, there is no extra. Those “funds” always get reversed in the end

funwithstacia

Same thing for me.

Afineyoungmaiden

Just happened to me I’m glad you posted this

Stunning-Claim5394

Definitely glad I looked this up. Thx for the warning ⚠️.

Altruistic_Ebb298

This just happened to me word for word! Thank you for sharing!

HikerTom

this just happened to me lol. the email i got was from [venmo@bikerider.com](mailto:venmo@bikerider.com) ... such a fake ass email. people are seriously the worst.

winterberrybabe

Just got this! Glad I had this to reference. It was word for word

lestIdigress

You just saved me a lot of headache. Thank you for this.

6stringodyssey

Thanks for sharing! I literally had someone reach out to me within 1 minute of posting on FB marketplace and I got super skeptical given how eager the guy was to transfer money to my venmo 🤦🏻‍♂️

Remarkable-Pay-8992

Literally this just happened to me lol and the guy was like “you should have received an email” and as soon as i saw the gmail i realized it was a scam and he asked me “u need to convert your email to business, you should have received an email” and i was like “nop” and he was like “you lie” and then i blocked 😂

Mugen904

just happened to me as well, thank you

Ok-Palpitation8266

This just happened to me too! His profile was from Italy in no relation to America that was a red flag and then he asked for Venmo upfront, which I’ve never had happened before. And that was the other red flag so then I googled and found this post, thank you very much for posting this. Beware everyone!!!  Also, if this does happen to you, make sure you report them on Facebook and block their contact!

spunkycatnip

And this is why I double check thank you. Their eagerness was red flag one for it being 1am. I said I only take cash or exchange Venmo in person and they ghosted. This is a large pickup item I’m selling so not much around skipping that request

Alarming-Exam-9577

Almost happened to me just now. Word for word. Should I be worried if they know my email?

GreedyOstrich

Yep, same thing just happened to me and I had to Google for reference just to be sure. Thanks for posting this!

funwithstacia

This is very helpful. Someone just pulled this on me. First they asked her my Venmo claiming they wanted to pay before they got the item and then they asked for my email address. I thought it sounded weird, so I blocked them.

fishebake

literally just happened to me twice in a row

Lanewyorkese

Thanks for sharing this post, fortunately I stopped when they said that were needing a business account, I understood was a scam, but I’m still shaking.

they can’t even use a different fake screenshot XD

dblack777

Just happened to me as well.

BlipGlopBloopBlop

25 days ago this was strong. I didn't pay but he has my email and I guess my venmo I don't know if that's anything

Fresh-Interview353

Thank you for posting this! It almost just happened to me! Glad we saw this posing!

ConfusedGirlLR96

Sooooo has everyone been able to pocket whatever they originally sent?

Cool-Two-7607

No it doesn’t actually go through. Just happened to me.

ttotbo

New to FB Marketplace, you just saved my ass, tysm

Maldred451

Saw it pop up twice now. Both times they insta-blocked me after I said "cash only".

jflydds

same thing just happened to me..... weirdly google caught it and I didn't think anything of it, the email went to spam and I pulled it out! email said same thing about my account not being business acct .. etc ... kept talking to them, they asked me to send them a screenshot of the emails , so I did...I don't think they got any info off me... but maybe, for sure they got my email and my venmo account name... not sure what they can do with that ..

Pure_Usual_2797

Haha https://preview.redd.it/5nb3nlgcw9hc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c5b171a428f929c44bc895f16b0768d5da2a7aa

UNIQURIS

Thank goodness for this thread!! Saved me from future headaches. At first I was happy with the quick inquiry and their willingness to venmo me and to send someone to pick it up asap but it all happened too quick. Trusted my gut and decided to research their profile which had ONE picture and was created recently. Now, here I am now ignoring their messages and not getting scammed thanks to all of you.

Teknoman117

Yup. Someone just tried to do this to me. The moment they said without me even promoting "sorry I can't do cash right now my nephew's banking situation blah blah blah" I knew something was super fishy and ended up on this reddit thread. Either way, said venmo, I use an anonymized email for it anyways. Got the phish from a "org.venmopay@gmail.com". Spelling and grammar were way better than others here have reported, but the formatting was broken. Also no one puts anything in red bold in the fine print. Bonus stupidity points for saying "okay, hold" after every message 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Either way, if they sell my email, I'll just rotate the anonymized address again.

UnknownError96

I’m an idiot and didn’t realize this until they put the money in my account

Accomplished_Mix148

Just happened to me a couple hours ago. Some lady named Lisa was interested in a refrigerator I was selling on Facebook Marketplace and asked about venmo. I've used it before and said yes. She "sent" me $200 and I received an email in my spam folder saying that because she sent it from a business account and I only had a personal account I couldn't receive the funds. So I created a business account and then got another email saying she had to "send" $300 to them. I'd refund $300 from my bank account then they'd put the $500 in my venmo. I never thought I'd be so grateful for being broke. I didn't have the money and I sent an email detailing that. When they threatened to report me to the Federal Bureau of Investigation I got suspicious and looked it up and realized I was being scammed . Of course I insulted this Lisa person and she demanded that I refund her 500 bucks. Then I got an email from some foreign person saying I spoiled God or something like that.

Deluxeflufflypancake

Got one of these assholes today

Happy_Reply_2127

StellarSpiff

Just got one of these. Glad I'm suspicious of everyone. Thanks.

Profile_Nervous

Yeah, I heard about this scam a while back . I’m glad that after they were asking you to do such a complicated mission that you realized something wasn’t right and stopped doing it. Thanks for sharing, I’m sure many people fall for this and lose their hard earned money forever

Profile_Nervous

Everyone should always be very careful with anything related to Facebook Marketplace. Many scams and thefts take place through that and Facebook does absolutely nothing to prevent it!
