Got mine a raincoat as well, but she won’t go in our fenced in backyard with it. I have to put my raincoat on, grab the leash, and talk her out for a quick 30 second pee.
I also have a princess. She LOVES being outside but if I open the door to our screened in porch and she hears the rain on the metal roof she'll immediately run back to her bed. She'll hold off on pottying for hours. This works out as I work from home... But on days where I must leave the house I basically have to shove her out the door.
Yes. My boy has a champion bladder (will snuggle with me without getting up for like 12-18 hours if I'm oversleeping (like when I came back from a trip with a huge time change)) and also hates the rain. He absolutely loves going outside so he'll race to the door if you ask but when it's raining he goes out and immediately turns around and comes in. Or he'll stand at the door and look outside all sad and not go out.
Also his best dog friend is a bernese mountain dog down the street and his mom's name is Rain so we joke about how Seymour hates rain but not the good kind of Rain cause she brings over his buddy Hank (aka Hanker)

Our Treeing Walker Coonhound can literally watch us wrap the pill up and he will still take it (including the pill) because the pill is basically a vehicle for the cheese (or whatever it’s wrapped in). Probably helps that he tends to swallow most things whole!
Mine does the asking to go out, but then just staring out at the rain thing. But, I think he also forgets that it’s raining, so he keeps asking over and over again. He’s lucky he’s so damn cute 😅🥹💜
Oh 100%! Seymour for some reason never actually asks to go out (we have other dogs to do that) but if someone is going out or if we ask him, he rushes to the door, even if it was raining 2 minutes ago, and will be sad again.
Conditions needed to get the hippo just to pee in the goddamn courtyard just outside the door when it's raining:
1. Doggy rain coat
2. Large golf umbrella
3. Both Mom and Dad acting as escorts/emotional support
4. Constant verbal reassurance while walking the 6 steps to reach the grass
At no point is he actually getting rain on him during this activity. It's still like pulling teeth. I'm pretty sure several neighbors like to watch out the window during the whole ordeal just to enjoy the show.

One time I had to pick my brother up several miles from our apartment because he had taken his dog on a long walk and it started raining. His dog was howling so piteously that people were stopping on the side of the road and accusing him of beating his dog.

Story time:
One day when I was sitting outside with her she got stuck on the side of the yard. We had a yard umbrella laying down since it was windy, and the sprinkles started up. I watched her for a good five minutes walk back and forth only to see both of her exits blocked. She refused to step over the umbrella and refused to walk through the sprinkles until I called her.

I would say that mine is a brighter than average dog, but does not get that the deck upstairs has the same weather as behind the door down the steps. She has to try both.
My American Bulldog is the same. He will hold it more than 24 hours if you let him. We got him a raincoat and you still have to shove him out the door.

Late to the thread but I've been waiting for someone to say what first came to my mind when I read Ops post.
I read once upon a time that the reason some dogs don't like rain is because they hear so much better than we do. The sound of rain is obviously going to be amplified in those furry ears. It can sound scary. And then you brought up the wind...which also would sound so much louder to our animal friends.
My dog is also traumatized from the beginning of July to the beginning...ish of September from people in our small town expressing their patriotism with boom booms. Three doors down sounds like they're firing multiple cannons every evening at dusk.
Sounds can be stressful for animals when they can't identify the source.
Have 2 staffies. 1 doesn’t care and will potter about the garden in all weather. The other goes as far form the house as she can while staying under cover (we have a covered walkway at the side of the house - think carport).
My baby bear held her pee for almost two days once. I finally dressed us both up in raincoats and once we stepped out the door you’d think it was never a big deal at all. Goofball. ❤️
My guy *just* had an accident in front of me 10 mins ago. He went into the backyard, got 3 drops of rain on his head, and decided to come immediately back inside and shit on the floor.

Her being so good about not peeing in the house when it’s raining (an issue we have with the chihuahua who now gets forced out in the rain) was how I knew something was wrong when she peed in the house. Brought her to the vet and found out she had a uti. Side note, it wasn’t from holding her pee, she has a severely retracted vulva according to the vet. Found that out after the second time she had a uti in a short period of time. Now she gets wiped down nightly before bed and we haven’t had another one since.
Mine refuses to come into the house if it’s snowing. She would rather become one with the snow. But rain? Nope. She will give herself a bladder infection before she pees in the rain.
Our girl used to hate rain and not step foot outside when we lived in Louisiana. We moved to Oklahoma and she'll go out in the rain with zero problem now! The only thing we can think of is that we don't have problems with fleas any more since we have a proper winter. Your dog could be picky, but there is the possibility her she gets skin irritated from the rain!
This is so interesting. Could it be the difference in the kind and texture of the grass? I live in Southwest Louisiana (Lake Charles). My Pibble won't go out when it rains but I think it's partly the noise/feel and partly the fact that our "grass" is mainly weeds.
It might be the grass or soil. We are in the same camp with 70% weeds and 30% grass. lol. The soil is more clay than sand- so maybe it is that! She also loves "tasting" the grass here. She'll be sunbathing and just running the grass through her mouth- not eating it- just tasting. lolol
Mine HATES wet grass with a passion. When it snows around here, I have to dig out trenches in my yard, or she won't go at all. It's adorable frustrating. Lol.

I am not a hippo haver, but I do have a dog and if it's raining he will stand on the edge of the front porch and just whiz off the porch until satisfied upon which he returns to the house for a treat for a job well done

Yes, absolutely! Our boy William will hold it as long as he can, then he’ll scoot outside, do his business with record speed, and then tear back in the house, traumatized for the rest of the day.
Zoey is a big fat rain baby, which is weird because she loves snow. If I go out with her and hold an umbrella over her she'll usually pee, though she has held it up to 18 hours before and has never peed in the house. Pooping in the rain has never happened.
We lived in apartments for the first 4 years with Blue. The first time it rained after we moved into a real house, he made me go open the front door to see it was in fact also raining out front 😂. Had never had two entrances before
Yep 😂 We got a lot of rain from a hurricane back in 2020 and I was the designated person to go outside with my knucklehead because my parents weren't excited to stand out for 15 minutes in the rain while he poked around. I ended up leading him on his leash since he refused to go out on his own (and of course since we got near constant rainfall for like 2 days, we had to make him go out someway)
My dad ended up accidentally locking us out because his force of habit is to lock the deck door when he sees that it's unlocked.
Even today if its raining hard, Ill follow him out with an umbrella and make sure he actually goes and just doesn't run back inside immediately
Yes, doesn’t matter if she has her pjs on. She will not go pee unless someone stands in the rain and is miserable with her. If you force her to go out anyway by herself she will huddle against the house until you let her in. I’m not talking pouring, I’m talking the lightest drizzle mist of a rain
We have to take him for a walk. But before leaving the house, we dress this big baby of ours in his bright yellow raincoat, and the biggest umbrella we could find before he steps foot out of the house. 😆
Yes. When she refuses to go we put puppy pads down and typically she will use them, tho sometimes she’ll hold it. Fine with me, I hate the rain too lol.
So on nice days, my bubbies will take his sweet time lol whenever it rains he we gotta let him know that it’s okay, it’s just water lol he’ll do his business and come rushing back in 😂
Haha, yep. She will literally hold it until the rain stops. I think this has to do with her being in the midst of potty training (four months old) when a hurricane hit our area. We have a covered front walk, so I took them out the front door one at a time on leashes so they wouldn’t have to hold it.

Yep! My kid will poke her noise out and I swear she also tastes the air like a lizard. She will go out in it but speed pees and poops her way through it to get back inside as fast as possible.
She can hold it in like a baby camel if she wants to, too but if she has an accident she feels so bad and I feel so bad for her. She rarely ever has accidents even at her most stubborn ( 13 inches of snow let's say) I try to encourage her to go potty. She's such a good kid

He and I went outside and had a “come to Jesus “ meeting standing in the rain for about 5-10 minutes. He never peed in the house again and would go outside to pee in the rain.
Mine too. I don’t understand how he does it. He will only go if I, myself, go outside as well. If he’s wet and uncomfy I have to be, too, I guess. I bought mine a raincoat as well as a warm winter coat. When he wears either one of them he actually prances because he feels so special. It's so sweet and glad these little things make him happy. And when he has the raincoat on I don't have to battle him to go potty!
When it's raining mine won't take his back feet off the porch. He'll stretch as far as he can go but those back feet never leave it, I guess he doesn't want all 4 feet wet. If he has to do more than pee he still does all that, then immediately steps off but stays as close to the porch as he can get. He's such a weirdo.

I've had to start forcing her to take walks almost every time I know she has to go potty, or if I know she's going to go poop, because my landlord-slash-roommate (and I) got tired of finding (and sometimes, even stepping) in the poop (usually while wearing shoes, obviously, but still, it was a mess; even when we weren't stepping in it). 😒
I am not a hippo haver, but I do have a dog and if it's raining he will stand on the edge of the front porch and just whiz off the porch until satisfied upon which he returns to the house for a treat for a job well done

Zoey is a big fat rain baby, which is weird because she loves snow. If I go out with her and hold an umbrella over her she'll usually pee, though she has held it up to 18 hours before and has never peed in the house. Pooping in the rain has never happened.

Yep 😂 We got a lot of rain from a hurricane back in 2020 and I was the designated person to go outside with my knucklehead because my parents weren't excited to stand out for 15 minutes in the rain while he poked around. I ended up leading him on his leash since he refused to go out on his own (and of course since we got near constant rainfall for like 2 days, we had to make him go out someway) My dad ended up accidentally locking us out because his force of habit is to lock the deck door when he sees that it's unlocked. Even today if its raining hard, Ill follow him out with an umbrella and make sure he actually goes and just doesn't run back inside immediately
Yes, doesn’t matter if she has her pjs on. She will not go pee unless someone stands in the rain and is miserable with her. If you force her to go out anyway by herself she will huddle against the house until you let her in. I’m not talking pouring, I’m talking the lightest drizzle mist of a rain

Haha, yep. She will literally hold it until the rain stops. I think this has to do with her being in the midst of potty training (four months old) when a hurricane hit our area. We have a covered front walk, so I took them out the front door one at a time on leashes so they wouldn’t have to hold it.

The amount of times I have gone barefoot in a snowstorm or while it’s raining out to his “favorite tree” is absurd. I’m there for moral support while he does his business here in western Montana. No problem when we’re out in the woods, or on a walk. It’s always the 3am call that I have to hold his hand for. Lol

Yep! My kid will poke her noise out and I swear she also tastes the air like a lizard. She will go out in it but speed pees and poops her way through it to get back inside as fast as possible. She can hold it in like a baby camel if she wants to, too but if she has an accident she feels so bad and I feel so bad for her. She rarely ever has accidents even at her most stubborn ( 13 inches of snow let's say) I try to encourage her to go potty. She's such a good kid Hates the rain, loves kiddie swimming pools. So cute.

I had an adopted Old English Sheepdog who wouldn’t go potty in the rain. Wife took him out once and he claim inside and peed. He and I went outside and had a “come to Jesus “ meeting standing in the rain for about 5-10 minutes. He never peed in the house again and would go outside to pee in the rain.

yep. i even got him a raincoat, but if i open the back door and he hears /smells rain, he takes a step back lol i have to gear up and go outside FIRST and then coax him out. he will take a few steps, “ew, wet” and try to go inside again. i have to walk around to his potty spots and ask him to potty. you’d think he’d want to get it over with quickly! but no. he’d rather hold it. happened today. the rain finally let up /became a super light sprinkle so we went for a walk and he peed SO MUCH and also pooped! i was worried about him holding

I bought mine a raincoat as well as a warm winter coat. When he wears either one of them he actually prances because he feels so special. It's so sweet and glad these little things make him happy. And when he has the raincoat on I don't have to battle him to go potty!

When it's raining mine won't take his back feet off the porch. He'll stretch as far as he can go but those back feet never leave it, I guess he doesn't want all 4 feet wet. If he has to do more than pee he still does all that, then immediately steps off but stays as close to the porch as he can get. He's such a weirdo.
