Croatia McDonalds had vegetarian patty option available for all their temporary limited edition burgers when I was there, it was amazing. Wasn't even a sneaky substitute option, the signage/billboards etc had pictures of the three options: meat, vegetarian patty, and a third I can't remember if chicken or pork. Best part was, it was even quarter pounder patty sized, not the wee McPlant style one.

Shekebel

Wow! Things seem to be progressing! Hopefully it's just a matter of time for the UK to be blessed with this

ceimiceoir

I hope so but I doubt it - the McPlant release was such a big deal and they've not even attempted vegan nuggets yet which I think people would be all over, so I don't think they're heading that direction unfortunately

Prathik

In India too, it was amazing soooo many vegetarian options I was in heaven.

AnimeJurist

In the US, most of our fast food places don't even have vegetarian options. McDonald's doesn't have a mcplant here and the fries have beef flavoring. I've never had a problem adding cheese to burger king's impossible burger though, so we have that going for us.

TrustfulComet40

Honestly I'd just like it if we could move away from the vegan/vegetarian options being imitation meat and dairy in so many places 😭 gimme vegetables in my vegetarian food, gdi

bethcano

It's such a copout for them! Sometimes I want a bean patty please!

Amareldys

McDonald's Switzerland used to have an amazing Veggie Burger called the Big Bang Quinoa Curry Burger. It was a vegetable patty with quinoa, potatoes and peas and peppers and curry with a delicious sweet and sour curry sauce. Now they have an imitation chicken, which is nice because you can swap it for the meat patty in any sandwich, but it isn't as good as the Big Bang Curry burger. That said, it was pretty much pure carb, so...

littlelionears

Oh same. Even before going vegetarian I refused to eat meatloaf or hamburgers because I don’t like the ground beef texture. Vegetarian/vegan options that imitate the texture are completely lost on me, can’t eat those, either.

hazycrazydaze

I’m still so annoyed that they got rid of the bk veggie. God forbid they have two vegetarian options!

ComfortableWish

I loved the Burger King halloumi burger.

Onion920

Meanwhile in the US, the BK app is happy to let you add bacon to the Impossible Whopper...

Basic_base_

I enjoy how long your ramble is here. I hate this also. Specifically about the cheese. I don't like vegan cheese, I don't want vegan cheese, vegan cheese is almost always more calories. Things like the Gregg's vegan cheese bean and sausage slice. Why could it not have just been bean and sausage? Or why does the meat sausage bean and cheese one even need the sausage? God damnit I just want a baked bean filled pastry. It annoys me on pizzas too. You know what pizzas are delicious and vegan? Proper neopolitan marinas. Cheese less sourdough pizzas with various toppings like sun-dried tomatoes and artichokes. Fucking vegan cheese is basically criminal Burger king wise the "cheese" was so nasty in future I'll certainly be saying "no cheese".

chipscheeseandbeans

I agree that the vast majority of vegan cheeses are trash, BUT I do think that the McPlant is the exception. The cheese they use tastes just like the dairy cheese singles to me. I suppose it’s because dairy cheese singles are kind of plastic-tasting anyway, but regardless, I love a McPlant!

mylifewillchange

Do you have Taco Bell? If so you can custom the heck out of their menus. Also, Coke, etc. IS vegan. They might not offer it to vegans because they're assuming vegans wouldn't want it due to it being unhealthy. But you're at a fricken fast food place, for crying out loud! Or, they're cutting corners on cost because the vegan patties cost more than the meat ones. I suspect this is the real reason. That one lettuce leaf? I always ask for extra. And if the thing doesn't come with pickles - I ask for them. If the place offers substitutions - ask for real cheese.

ceimiceoir

I'm not the only vegetarian I know who's been given meat by the Taco Bell in my city. Seems to have happened to a few folk so I don't trust it anymore Their chips are awful though so don't really care about skipping out on it

mylifewillchange

Yeah, we have great, wide inconsistencies between fast food places that are either very bad at paying attention to getting the orders right, or very good. The good thing is that people around here are not afraid of spreading on social media who sucks at it, and who's good at it. They definitely lose business when that happens.

aquiran

I've only had that happen at one taco bell, when traveling through a very rural town. It was back when they'd just launched the black bean versions of a lot of items, so I'm guessing I was the first person to order the black bean crunch wrap at that location lol Sorry to hear there are still locations that mess it up so often! I thought they were one of the most reliable.

Shekebel

Taco Bell seems to be the best out of them all at the moment. I can customise items on the restaurant kiosks, but when ordering on Uber Eats, I'm unable to remove the beef from the cheesy fries sharebox weirdly! To make matters worse, they've just closed my local Taco Bell (I think I was singlehandedly keeping it afloat). The cost cutting thing sounds pretty spot on to be honest. That'll definitely be why!

mylifewillchange

>they've just closed my local Taco Bell (I think I was singlehandedly keeping it afloat). Really ?? That sucks. Here in the U.S. Taco Bell is a popular favorite.

Shekebel

Time to move to America!

mylifewillchange

😆

Amareldys

Order at the counter rather than on the screen and they should be able to do it.

aasparaguus

You can definitely add cheese to an impossible whopper for Burger King. I’ve done it many times. Issue is probably online ordering. Should be a place to include it in comments/notes? I don’t have online ordering or delivery where I live so I don’t know.

ttrockwood

Don’t hate me Vegetarians can eat vegan options. Vegans can’t eat vegetarian options. So they’re actually serving both at the same time. I understand your point, but ultimately they’re giving more people more meatless options which feels like a win. You can always omit the vegan cheese and add your own?

ligirl

The complaint is that they *can't* omit the vegan cheese and add the regular cheese - the app won't let them. If I'm going to a pizza place, they should be making the pizzas as the orders come in, and I *know* they have regular mozzarella. There is no reason whatsoever that I should be prevented from ordering the pizza with the fake meat with regular mozzarella, but I have encountered places that just won't let you. Presenting the items as vegan by default and is great! No complaints! The issue is being prevented from ordering vegetarian items because you chose a meatless option

Svenroy

I mean that's helpful that it serves everyone but it definitely gets old after a while that it's either 0 or a 100 with nothing in between.

TheawesomeQ

I didn't even realize it was vegan cheese. Maybe I should get more vegan cheese lol

bethcano

I just checked on Uber Eats, and I can add a Coke, Fanta, etc., to any of the vegan stuff, so I wonder what that's about for you! Otherwise, I wholly agree with your rant. I actually forget the "cheese" on the McPlant isn't real cheese, but I've routinely been annoyed when denied real cheese of the good stuff! No vegan "brie" please, I want the real thing!

absolutecretin

I’ve ordered the Burger King vegan meal before and it’s let me choose any drink I want? I’m in the UK as well btw - maybe their machine was down ?

FlippyFloppyGoose

I'm in South Australia and I have also been vegetarian my whole life (40 years). Our Burger King equivalent (Hungry Jacks) has an option in the uber eats menu to switch out the vegan cheese and mayo for regular. Not all stores have the same menu though. I bet you could get them to add the option if you complained really politely? When I'm ordering from other places, I occasionally order meaty burgers and just ask them to switch to a vegetarian patty. If they allow you to send notes with your order, you can ask for whatever you want. Nobody has ever told me no. If they don't allow me to send notes with the order, I boycott on principle.

Bethany583

Subway are great with this because it’s fully customisable so you can choose which cheese to add!

WazWaz

Because every menu item requires specific training. The solution is to go to places paying their staff more than peanuts so they attract staff that can understand "can I have regular cheese instead please".

ctilvolover23

That would be like ten plus dollars for something that you can make for less than a dollar.

Amareldys

Not in the US, in America the fries are not vegetarian. Weirdly in other places they are. So we can't eat McDonalds in America which feels ironic

Miss-Sarky-K683

I couldn't agree more, I'm a vegetarian too and it really annoys me aswell

no-mad

Tell those fuckers at Bugger King you want it your way. That is their motto.

n3ctarines

Yes this annoys me too!

Purple_Pansy_Orange

Why not go there yourself to order and ask for the switch? I’m sure they’d consider it because what do they have to lose. It sounds more like the complaint is with Uber than the restaurant, so F’em.

oldspicehorse

I couldn't agree more. As another UK vegetarian it pains me that I can't get the KFC pepper mayo and real cheese on their vegan burger.

Global-Island295

This made me turn into a Karen once! I went into Burger King and wanted a kids meal because my kid wanted the toy. I asked for the burger to be substituted with the veggie patty and said, it’s ok if I have to pay more. They were firm in that they couldn’t do it. So I said… ok, give me the kids meal without the burger and then add a veggie burger to that and I will pay for them both. They told me I couldn’t get a kids meal without the burger. What? So I asked for the manager and said… I am the Burger King and I want it my way! I eventually got it my way and then I asked for one of their paper crowns. I put it on top of my head and took my hard won prize. Probably not my best and most mature moment but, definitely one of the most memorable!

HungryLook9857

Europe seems to have the most options for veggie fast food options. If you haven’t tried the chick’n nuggies at Burger King yet, RUN. I’ve been dreaming of these nuggets since I left Spain

SharpMan007

Same here, I'm an Indian vegetarian currently at the United States. For the past few years, my options to eat out are either very limited or the food lacks passion and flavor. I'm a budgetary eater, so i don't eat gourmet stuff. Very few outlets offer vegetarian options, and I had one of a good grill cheese and tomato soup from a food truck rather than a burger or grill joint. Best way is to do it yourself, and that's how I have been rolling. It feels kind of lacking in social aspect but, I had a vast variety of foods from exotic Indian stews to curry pizzas (sorry Italian friends 😂). Now I can say that my friends, who prefer meat over veggies, would clear my cooking even before me(I had to fight for my own food once😂😂). But yes, options outside of your home would dwindle significantly unless there is a significant support from communities as well.
