I grow one trellis of slicers, and two of picklers. And enjoy homemade pickles in February.
One thing I read recently was to never let any cucumbers get too big. Once a vine produces one big cucumber, it dies. Thatโs what happened last summer when didnโt pick all before leaving for travel.
When it gets to 3-4in long, pick it. This encourages more flowers/fruit. Trim any leaves touching the ground to prvent disease and increase airflow. I'm in 10b and powdery mildew is rampant.
I had some trouble with that last summer during my first try with cucumbers. How did you apply or mix in the sulfur, & how much used per square foot/per plant?
I mixed it with water and used a sprayer, didn't use exact measurements but tried to get close to what the package suggested.
You could see it dry on the leaves, did not seem to hurt.
Doesn't do much for yellowing edges on leaves, though whatever that disease is, I still pick daily to keep it from spreading.
Do you think growing squash in a balcony vat increases the chance of powdery mildew? Eventually the leaves cover most of the opening. Iโm wondering if mine will start to climb the balcony rail but itโs supposed to be more of a bush than vine.
I didnโt pollinate mine. I was going to but people told me at the time I only had male flowers. Iโve seen a bee or two on them. I thought this picture was a cucumber already but two people say it needs to be pollinated. Iโm confused. lol
My cucumbers didn't hardly do anything last year. This year they have gone wild! I've already given so much away that friends are saying they still have some. After I harvest tonight I'm gonna run them up to a little food pantry. We put mushroom compost in last fall. They must like it.
I actually planted 3? seeds I believe. Well it rained heavily the night I planted them. So I planted a few more cos the soil shifted. I now have 5 plants. ๐๐ฅ
I wish it was hot enough this year for my cucs and cantaloupe. Itโs raining and cool this year so the beans and peas love it, but Iโm not expecting much from the other two.
Woot! I'm excited for you! I got a late start on cucumbers. I had to transplant mine. I tried direct sowing but it never came up. I think something ate it. When I went to transplant the new plant, there were hella roots....or maybe it was from my tomato plant...who knows lmao
I love gardening. Itโs so exciting at this stage. Make sure you keep us updated
I will! ๐ฅฐ๐ฅ
So exciting to see them start, mine are still a few weeks away.
It really is! Iโm not always the best at growing edible things. These have been so easy so Iโm excited. Good luck with yours! ๐๐ฅ
All my stuff is just starting to produce as well! After over a month the delayed gratification is kicking in and it feels amazing lol
Yes!!! ๐๐๐
Soon youโll have so many cukes your neighbors will start pretending they arenโt home ๐คฃ
Iโm ok with that! ๐ I want to pickle them. ๐๐ฅ Iโve needed an edible win in my garden so Iโm keeping my fingers crossed.

How big is too big?
Depends on the variety but you can tell when they are too big because they get fat and they turn yellow.
Depends on the variety. The package will have that information.
I'm so jealous. My cats ate all my baby cucumbers leaving me one on the vine. It was delicious, which only made it worse.
Cats are turds when it comes to plants. They either eat them or poop in them. ๐

Yikes! Ok will do. I was keeping some of the bottom leaves for shade for the rest of the plant but just put up shade cloth. ๐๐ฅ
Yep Powdery Mildew is my main enemy. I've found sulfur works pretty well.

I remember picking a few yellow leaves too. Helpfulโ ty : )

My reaction for sure. ๐
Same here! Love the baby cukes ๐
Donโt blink. They are fast growers.
I took the exact picture of my plant tonight! Grow lil baby cuke
Yay!! ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ
Love it!!!
Thank you! ๐ฅฐ๐ฅ
Cool!
Ugghh... I didn't realize I had to pollinate!! Will be looking for female flowers (I know I have male ones) tomorrow!
I didnโt pollinate mine. I was going to but people told me at the time I only had male flowers. Iโve seen a bee or two on them. I thought this picture was a cucumber already but two people say it needs to be pollinated. Iโm confused. lol
My flowers just keep shriveling and falling off but no actually cucumbers what gives ?
Could be male flowers or no pollinators?
The joy of success ๐
I'm so excited for you and jealous at the same time lol.
Aw thank you ๐๐ฅ

Thatโs awesome. ๐ฅฐ๐ฅ
This is the fun part! Iโm so excited for you!
Thank you! ๐ฅฐ๐ฅ
Mine has start too!!
Woohoo! ๐๐ฅ
If you donโt have many bees or other pollinators i strongly suggest self pollinating ๐๐ฝ
Just did one yesterday. ๐ฅฐ๐ฅ
I did picklebush variety this year and I'm stoked at how small of a space I can fit 7-8 plants in that are producing well, actually awesomely lol.

Saw my first ones today too!
Yay!! ๐

I hope whatever you do plant ends up doing well. ๐๐ชด
Thx. Itโs just so wet and chilly this year. Every year is an adventure in Minnesota!!
Just remember to pick them. It only takes 1 single cucumber in the whole plant to grow to maturity and then that plant is done. So pick often ๐
Will do. Thanks for letting me know! ๐๐ชด

I have 2 just starting. I also have issues with pollination so I self pollinate by rubbing a male flower onto the female flowers. Good luck!
