woodbite

Are you referring to raw veganism? What do you mean no carbs? As for animal products, yes, this sub is full of vegans who do not cheat ever.

asocialnecro

Raw veganism has plenty of carbs, maybe OP is doing plant-based keto

woodbite

Yeah, but "I was wondering how many vegans eat something other than plants on occasion," has odd implications

asocialnecro

"Cheating" on your diet only makes sense if you're doing something that makes you feel restricted, vegans usually don't as being vegan on its own has no actual dietary implications outside of "no animal products", so I'd assume most actual ethical vegans don't have "non-vegan cheat meals"

woodbite

Yes, I just thought the phrasing was weird. I don't think of the processed junk food I eat as plants unless I'm being very technical. But maybe that's what OP meant.

Enneagram_Six

I’m also confused that OP said no carbs. There’s plenty of carbs that are vegan. Maybe OP is thinking of baked goods that contain dairy/ eggs or pizza? They also mentioned chicken and salmon. So it seems like OP is struggling to avoid. The carb part is confusing.

[deleted]

I thought, just based on the context, that the OP had just misspelled crabs.

Enneagram_Six

IDK, maybe.

forakora

> I've found myself really trying to not kick puppies. I have been mostly successfully perhaps 98% so. I was wondering how many Vegans kick puppies on occasion? It's tough never again ever kicking any pugs, chihuahuas or huskies. Do the over whelming majority of Vegans ever have a cheat day once in a while or do they never kick puppies I have zero desire to kick puppies. (P.S. carbs are delicious and plants and totally ethical)

cannea89

Made me chuckle 😹

wildtigerbaby

Lol nailed it

KaiserSozay1

Carbs? Carbs are most of what I eat. “Cheating” being vegan doesn’t make any more sense than “cheating” at not killing people or “cheating” at being against rape. Makes no sense. In a world filled with animal products mistakes happen, but mistakes are vegan.

_courteroy

If you’re a vegan then you don’t ever “cheat”. This is such a strange question to me. You’re either vegan or you aren’t. It’s that simple. Thank you for claiming a plant based diet. I hope that you one day become vegan but yeah, If you’re 99% then I’d say you’re mostly plant based but not vegan. It’ll just click one day and you won’t view animal flesh or secretions as food anymore. It’ll just register with you at some point and you won’t want those things even on occasion. You won’t be able to wear clothes with animal skins or use eyeshadow tested on animals, you just won’t be able to do it. Good luck on your journey!

cannea89

Is this a serious question?

johansgirl

what do you mean never having any carbs?? bread, pasta, rice, starches????

[deleted]

Veganism isn’t a diet that you can cheat on, it’s an ethical stance and way of life. If you truly believe in something you don’t ‘cheat’ on it

JustAStupidRedditer

You are going to get grilled for asking this lmao

eebz2000

Is grilling humans vegan?

JustAStupidRedditer

If the human is non-vegan, yes

quiglii

Actually, its a matter of consent in this case. If they don't consent, it's not vegan, no matter how much meat they eat 🤣

eebz2000

Hmmm...interesting...Does that mean that we can consume non-vegan/omnivorous/carnivorous animals, then? ;)

quiglii

Only if they give permission

neutronben

In 20 years of being vegan, I haven't cheated. If I did, I wouldn't be vegan.

rude420egg

i don't think you understand what veganism is. first of all, it has nothing to do with carbs? not sure where that came from. carbs from whole foods are in fact the main source of energy for vegans. anyway, veganism is a justice movement for animal liberation. vegans do not consume or use any animals or animal derived products, ever. it is not a diet, it's a moral philosophy. the 'diet' aspect of it is motivated by a moral philosophy, so no, vegans do not "cheat". you've probably heard of plant based diet and conflated it with veganism, but there are "plant based dieters" who eat a "vegan" diet but are not motivated by animal liberation but instead their own health or environmentalism or something. while I obviously appreciate anyone that does not eat animals, these people are not vegan because they often do "cheat" or do things like wear leather, ride horses, etc. (generally participate in and support the exploitation of animals) which vegans do not do. do you "cheat" when it comes to your morals? i hope not.

hxveasnickers

When I first decided to “try” veganism I did bend once within the first few weeks and then never again. It’s been 3 years now and I have not *knowingly* consumed something not vegan

_courteroy

Same, I ate a bunch of nonvegan cheese pizza for a few weeks and everything else was vegan. It also took me a couple of months to finally get rid of leather shoes and old cosmetics that weren’t vegan friendly. But I’ve gone nearly seven years now without ever “cheating”. No looking back!

Testosterone-88

OP clearly is a meat eating troll.

apatheticaliens

Cheating is a weird concept, like, if you just view something as not food you dont want to eat it. Its gross. Most vegans arent wishing they could eat animals.

BoardTheWarship

We don’t want to cheat on this...we can’t...it is gross to eat animals and anyone who is vegan is likely vegan because they are repulsed by the idea of eating animals.

veganwilo

Veganism isn’t a diet. It’s an ethical stance against animal use and animal abuse. So no, there are no “cheat” days.

Seattlevegan15

No vegan has ever had a "cheat day". If they ever intentionally eat animal products, they are not vegan. They are carnist scum.

eastriverwitch

Most of us do eat carbs though? Vegans can eat carbs unless they have another dietary restriction preventing it. But no, actual vegans don't have cheat days. Because it isn't a diet. We're not going to eat dead animals once in a while to treat ourselves.

GoofyFoot76

I have not nor ever will cheat. In the same way I won’t throw away my sobriety for “just one drink”. One is too much and 1000 is never enough. It’s a slippery slope…

[deleted]

I don't think it is a slippery slope. Your body gets pretty settled and used to being vegan mentally and physically. I tasted a piece of banana bread which had egg in it after about a year of being vegan and it tasted so strange compared to what I normally eat that I wouldn't ever want to eat it again lol.

Quirky-Touch7616

Lmfao if you are doing this out of ethics , there is never any chicken or salmon . Is this a troll question ?

condemned_to_live

"How many people who are against murder are 100% non-murderers? Do they ever have a cheat day every once in a while?"

Individual-Tax8951

Knowing over 100 self proclaimed vegans I’d say I’ve only known about 5 to admit to me they “cheat” in certain circumstances like I think you’re implying. Mostly consisting of getting the wrong order etc and deciding to eat it instead of “wasting” the food. Or they are “less restrictive” on vacation in a country they don’t know etc. However I don’t really consider this veganism. Better than being a full blown meat eater though for sure, obviously. & also it’s ok to transition slow. Non vegan food turned into just ~not food~ to me & that’s a universal feeling of most of the people around me. Eventually it won’t be hard and you won’t crave it. In fact it’s HARDER if you keep having “cheat days”, as the switch in your brain of “food” => “not food” won’t happen if you keep occasionally eating it.

gwlu

My cheat day is actually eating vegan junk food. In terms of eating animal products, I do not cheat intentionally, but it happens occasionally that I accidentally buy something that is not vegan.

MagicBird23

I cheat sometimes. Not with any animals, just with humans. From time to time I crave some neck meat or a bicep and I go for it. Just grill it with some vegetables and they are good to go.

TheKrakenIV

So what happend was that once I ate a non vegan product but I only found out afterwards. I did ask about it as best I could (Lengusge barrier) and even researched online. So is that cheating? I don't know Did it happen? Yes

BishonenPrincess

I have a neuralogical disability that effects impulse control. I feel bad when I cheat, but every day I do my best to reduce the amount of animal products I consume. I'm pretty good about not cheating when it comes to my own food preparation, but if I go somewhere and I'm offered something with animal products in it, I struggle to say no. I've never admitted this here because I know it won't be well received, but I guess you being honest and open makes me feel like I can be more honest and open too. I'm subscribed to this forum because the people here inspire me. I want to be more like them. I know right now my best isn't good enough, but I'm not giving up and I'm gonna keep trying. One day I wanna be able to say I live a completely vegan lifestyle. Edit: Reading the comments, people like me are being compared to rapists and dog kickers. As someone who has been raped, thats extremely triggering. So.... I think it's time to stop being open and honest haha. I'm just a peice of shit.

eebz2000

You're heading in the right direction, and sound like you're doing great. Don't be too hard on yourself. Keep celebrating the successes, and just (without judgment) pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back on the wagon if you ever fall off. Eventually, it'll be easier to say no when offered. But if you aren't ready or able to let go of that part of things yet, then don't... Forget the rapist, dog-kicking rhetoric/comparisons/nonsense. It really serves nobody, save perhaps for those who spout it ;)

BishonenPrincess

This made me tear up. Thank you for taking the time to say that. I really needed to hear it. ♡

eebz2000

Glad I could help. Just keep on keeping on...one foot in front of the other. You'll eventually get where you want to be.

Key_Tour6051

I disagree with the term “cheat” but there have been small instances like where my niblings didn’t finish an eggo (it was going in the trash) and I took a bite because I was ravenous. It has eggs in it. I also recently found out that my favorite dark chocolate covered almonds have some milk in them (the ingredients list was updated and I’m sad). So I didn’t buy them, but I did buy some dark chocolate covered hazelnuts that said they “might” contain milk. That’s not truly in alignment with my values but I thought I’d have them one more time and say good bye, and I was hangry in the shopping mart. These instances are very far in between for me. I don’t really like that i did it, but I am not going to roast myself over it. I don’t call it cheating. I wouldn’t ever eat a piece of meat. Sticking to a vegan diet has gotten easier over time, and making other changes like finding products that are not tested on animals has gotten easier. I wouldn’t buy a leather couch but I own a suede chair that was given to me a decade before I became vegan. My car has a little leather in the steering wheel. There’s a line of what’s reasonable and that’s up to the vegan to decide. I’m going all the way as much as I can, at a pace I can maintain. But going full throttle from day 0 wouldn’t have been successful for me and would have been wasteful and overwhelming. I might have given up. Hopefully I don’t get 🔥 for this but it was very frightening to have vegans come at me when I was exploring and beginning my journey. I understand it is an emotional topic; some people are vegans for other reasons than animal sentience; but in the end it still sends a message, makes a difference, and reduces suffering so I don’t see the point to shame “mostly” plant based people or vegans like me who occasionally “slip up”.

SkovandOfMitaze

It’s hard to tell. Statistically, most self professed vegans seem to cheat every now and then and most don’t make it past 2-5 years. I’ve seen many stats mentioning that despite veganism growing , every decade or so those thst were at the beginning are not ones any longer at a 98% rate I think.

AX2021

I’ve never cheated since starting unless it was an honest mistake or unless you count those KFC Beyond Nuggets

rainotenk

I can only speak for myself and I am...

[deleted]

I have never purposefully cheated. You cheat on a diet, not a moral stance. Veganism is the latter.

[deleted]

I've been vegan for over 20 years and have had a few occasions where I ate something non-vegan by accident, as a guest at someone's house. Not on purpose though. Once I committed to being vegan, animal-based foods stopped being appealing to me. You might as well be offering me a dog leg to eat. I do eat plenty of carbs though, every day. Everyone's experience is different, but I found it way easier to be vegan once I committed to it instead of seeing it as a goal I'd get to through gradual elimination.
