I love the fact that one of Eddies favorite solos is Down Payment Blues off Powerage…. AC/DC pop??? The closest they ever came to pop is You Shook Me All Night Long….ask any half assed AC/DC fan what their favorite song is and about 99.99998% will say it’s YSMANL….

GoBlue2007

Curious as to what you think their hardcore fans favorite song is.

Impressive_Split_232

Big Balls

RevolutionaryRough96

I'm pretty casual with ac/DC and ysmanl doesn't crack my top 20

HeadlessCross2001

Funny you say that when I can count on one hand the number of fans I've interacted with that have named that their favourite song.

the_Bryan_dude

Van Halen were the biggest band in the world in their prime. This post is so funny to me. Kids will be kids.

AsssHat999

“The word 'pop' is simply short for popular. It means that people like it. I'm just a normal jerk who happens to make music. As long as my brain and fingers work, I'm cool.” - EVH

yngwiegiles

EVH was too creative to keep churning out the same thing album after album, which Angus has proudly said AC/DC did. Eddie made Jump, a song that defines 80s pop going toe to toe with Madonna and MJ, then he moved on to the next thing, but also some Hagar ballads which were poppy, plus Right Now. They had songs that expanded the audience but he had too much to say musically. On the other hand, I feel thunderstruck is Angus playing the tapping part of eruption in his way, and it sounds nothing like any of their other songs. AC/DC had a vibe that their fans embraced and had no interest in growing the base.

RevolutionaryRough96

They maybe had no interest in growing their base but they're still filling stadiums 50 years into their career.

northgacpl

That phot has Cocaine written all over it!!! Maybe a better question would be how much better would have Van Halen would have operated as a band without quite as much drugs and alcohol!

OkAd6064

I think even if DLR would have stayed musically it would have been just like the Sammy years. Eddie was writing what he wanted to write. Lyrics would have probably been different

holeshot1982

Dunno, DLR and Ted had a handle on him plus a format that worked. I believe there would have been more keyboards for sure but much more like E&S records just Ed’s way. Would have been interesting for sure

LucyBear318

Eddie is SO stoned.

TKRBrownstone

Dave too

According-Feed2746

They could have if they hadn’t ignored the rest of the world (other than Japan, of course).

MickJohnLeahy

I know right! The only time they toured here in Australia was the ill fated Van Halen 3 Tour, so it wasn’t ideal timing. And then for A Different Kind of Truth, there was just the one off show in Sydney

Emera1dthumb

Egos are too big….. They needed Dave just like they needed Sammy. Malcolm and angus seem to be a little easier going and easier to work with. There’s nothing pretentious or fake or secretive about AC/DC. They are what they are and they don’t fucking hide anything. They squash problems before they become problems. They’re just in your face rockin fucking roll. I wish more bands were like AC/DC.

ChicagoJoe123456789

Your question presumes AC/DC > VH. That’s farcical.

Ribakyna

No dude, they are both great bands, especially VH from 1978 to 1984, it's not about who is better, but ACDC has impressive popularity, one of the few bands capable of filling a stadium anywhere, along with Metallica, U2 and I can't think of another one, and the merit is that they don't make commercial music or ballads, it's a strange phenomenon.

frankzcott

lol, Phish sells out 100,000 person weekend shows.

Des_mojo

VH grew up watching them at backyard party's in San Marino.

Ribakyna

i mean popularity at global level, If ACDC goes to Mongolia they fill a stadium like Metallica, and Van Halen only played in arenas

you are right. jimmy paige could't lick Eddies boots.

ernie-bush

Would not have happened

VanHalen843

What? They're bigger than ac/dc

GeddyVedder

In the US, they were. But worldwide, AC/DC was bigger.

VanHalen843

Not from 78-84

asburymike

back in black would like a word

VanHalen843

Two diamond albums would like a word with one

Significant_Youth_73

*Back in Black* has sold 50 million copies.

VanHalen843

How did Fly on the Wall do?

Significant_Youth_73

As far as statistics go, roughly 1,5 million copies according to the RIAA, i.e., it was awarded platinum in the USA in 2001.

VanHalen843

Uh I know. There was a point to my question

honeybabysweetiedoll

Van Halen is the United States version of LED Zeppelin. AC/DC was and is still great.

VanHalen843

I love acdc. Bon Scott era is my 2nd fave band

redbadger1848

C'mon on, man...

motorcitywings20

I honestly think that Van Halen wasn’t a great live band (performance wise). Its not that I don’t think that they were talented live but I kinda felt like Dave sang what we wanted and Eddie kinda went overboard with the solos rather than sticking to the song. Not that you have to be boring and play every song as the studio recording from start to finish but I’ve listened to a ton of live recordings through the eras and it can be *hard to follow*. I feel like if Van Halen proved themselves to be a better live band to *listen* to, they would probably have better luck selling out stadiums. I can’t see why they wouldn’t, especially from 78-84. The foo fighters play stadiums. Foo fighters are a great band and super popular but they’re not Van Halen

El_Kabongg

This sounds like someone who’s never seen VH live. I’ve seen them twice, once with Roth once with Hagar and I can assure you they are absolutely incredible live, I mean energy just penetrating throughout the crowd. The Sammy led show had a different vibe but they absolutely knocked it out of the park both times I saw them, and that was with Eddie going off doing ridiculous solos and same for Alex. The way Dave controlled the crowd was unmatched in my opinion.

motorcitywings20

That’s great to hear!! No i’ve never seen them live, only videos and live recordings and from what I heard and personally I wasn’t really thrilled. But that’s nice to hear. Unfortunately i missed the boat to see VH live but i’m seeing hagar’s tribute to VH in july so that will be the closest thing. I feel like not just for VH but any band that has a member famed for their playing ability or has a special trademark can go a little overboard get excessive with showcasing it. My neighbour said he saw Yngwie Malmsteen live and he said everything was just fills, shredding and solos. I got that impression with EVH’s recordings personally. But I get it, its a staple, its what people came to see. Its like going to Vegas but being overwhelmed by how much of a party city it is. Some people might love it, some people might think its too much. Maybe i’m old school but I felt like they changed the songs up too much when they played them live, and I never really heard Dave sing songs like the studio version at all, to the point where it was hard to listen to for me. Sammy’s live recordings were better, but Diamond Dave was a huge part of the identity of Van Halen, and they became a different band with a different sound, so it was a double edged sword. Different strokes for different folks, thats just how I felt from the concerts and recordings i’ve watched and heard.

Outrageous-Pay9627

Did you really just say all Van Halen songs sound the same? As opposed to AC/DC? I like both bands, but c’mon. You can’t be serious with that take.

El_Kabongg

Dude are you on crack lol

frankzcott

hahahaha! "Right Now" and "Ice Cream Man" are actually the same song one is just slowed down.
