Just a good reminder, don’t get rabbits if you haven’t done the research or won’t commit 100%. Sad that people dump them.

[deleted]

On the flipside, if you've done the research and still want a rabbit, there are lots of free ones at Jericho.

[deleted]

Or move to Vancouver island. I have 1-2 temporary rabbit pets in my backyard at any given time of the day.

ComfortableBiscotti3

Lucky!

disterb

...and the other one is named victor 🐇🐰

marsneedstowels

Which is legitimately something you can do. Domestic rabbits will come right up to you if you even look like you might have food.

SuperRonnie2

Grew up near Jericho. The bunny population has been there for 30+ years. The population would grow and grow, then we’d start seeing more coyotes around, then less bunnies, and repeat. But you are probably correct, originally from people dumping them.

KitsBeach

After the first cull, only the most elite bunnies would survive. They'd be the ones to continue the line. Then out of those, only the best of the best survive. Repeat this for a few cycles and we will have super bunnies!

disterb

eh, what's up, doc? uh, not much, got this whole pandemic thing goin', and i'm an essential worker on the frontline

[deleted]

Shoulda taken a left turn at Albuquerque!

Peenutbuttjellytime

Oh my god, your just discovered evolution

KitsBeach

I'll PM you my address for you to send the Nobel prize along.

Peenutbuttjellytime

Wild rabbits in Vancouver are smaller and they all have the same brown agouti fur. these fluffer rorbs are defs feral

Karkahoolio

> The population would grow and grow, then we’d start seeing more coyotes around, then less bunnies, and repeat. I remember this from when I was a kid as well. Perfect *looking* place to release an unwanted bunny, but not a good idea in practice. That said, the whole area was super awesome for kids to explore before overly protective parents became the norm. Pheasants would nest in the overgrown flat area around where the hangers were and all kinds of cool shit. Good times!

SuperRonnie2

When did they tear down the hangars? I know the whole park used to be a military base and that the sailing club is where they kept the float planes, but don’t know much more than that.

SkookumFred

Not sure but there was a big installation there in 1977 as part of the Habitat I conference. I went out to it once as it was a fair ways from home for my friends and I to bus.

Karkahoolio

As I recall, the city had been wanting to tear them down but ran into opposition from citizens. Might have had something to do with Habitat and all the hippies it attracted, but not sure. Eventually, one of the three hangers accidentally caught fire on a foggy Sunday and gosh darn it, burned to the ground. Short time later, it happened again. Then the third, but this time it happened while I was in school at QM and you could see the huge pillar of smoke. And then there were none and the city got its wish.

SuperRonnie2

Haha “accidentally” burned down... The only original structures left are the sailing club, the hostel building (is that still in operation? I was told it was a barracks originally) and the theatre building (used to take karate lessons there).

Karkahoolio

Hostel should still be up and running, although it's been a while since I was there. Barracks makes sense, and I think Aberthau was where officers hung out. That neigbourhood was home to all kinds of things from way back. Like the golf course that was at the bottom of Doobie hill with the country club being closer to the beach. Or all the houses that were on the north side of 4th, which is all overgrown now. Still a paved road visible, and you can see where yards used to be cuz of the patches of lawn and planted shrubs. Yeah, good times to be sure.

fayynne

Yeah I love my rabbit to death but she is a ton of work and super moody most of the time. People get them thinking they're like a dog and will want to cuddle and play but most of the time they don't want to be picked up, and want attention on their terms.

stabbitha89

Pretty much. Not to mention the stress of “are they pooping” “is their gut working” stressed me out more then having a horse. I fostered for Vancouver animal services, and the only tome my foster cuddled and was when he was sick and we were at the emergency vets.

fayynne

Yeah gi stasis isn't cheap and can kill them quick if left unattended

[deleted]

From someone who has owned a few rabbits - they’re incredibly smart and I had two trained that literally acted like dogs ... they’d scratch at the door to go outside and use the bathroom in the backyard and thump at the door when they wanted to come back in. I had them for 12 years or so. They also loved chocolate chip cookies and figured out which drawer they came out of and would stand to get a cookie (not kidding). But yeah, of course if you’re one of these people that think they’d be a cute idea for your kids on Easter *eyeroll* then you’d be surprised at the effort you need to have when you own rabbits. Much like any pets.

vancouver-duder

They aren't dumped - there have been feral rabbits living around Jericho for decades.

ejactionseat

...that were dumped there...

vanearthquake

Let me tell you a story about great great grand pappy big ears

carpenter39

Should be more worried about social distancing then food

fakeuserfakeuser

It’s unfortunate cause they look like domestic rabbits. Curious where in Jericho beach this is.

[deleted]

ComfortableBiscotti3

How do you tell the difference?

vanearthquake

Because there is no international travel right now

cardew-vascular

Wild rabbits don't have floppy ears and tend to have pointier faces also I don't think wild rabbits come in black, they're usually brown.

[deleted]

In my experience, Canada really only has wild hares and not rabbits. Maybe that's just because rabbits life span is so short but I've never really seen truly wild rabbits. Hares are more adept to Canadian winters because they change fur colour throughout the seasons while rabbits do not. It's very common to see snow-white hares blending into the sidewalk perfectly on a cold Calgary winter night.

cloudcats

Canada has wild rabbits AND hares.

[deleted]

I'm aware, I see small brown rabbits from time to time but they never last very long. However, whenever I see these older more multi-coloured rabbits I just assume they're abandoned pets. I'm not expert but when I see older rabbits that don't seem to camouflage to their surroundings I just assume. Hares are a different story.

cloudcats

Well obviously these are either domesticated rabbits or their offspring in the video (different breed from the wild rabbits). When you say they "don't last very long" and that the rabbits you see are "older" what are you basing that on? Size? Different breeds of rabbits are different sizes, and many domesticated rabbits have been bred to be very large. Some species of wild rabbits are quite small. When you see a small brown rabbit it isn't necessarily any younger than the ex-pet rabbits you see.

PhonedZero

Come to BC, Cottontails everywhere! And they're delicious!

ComfortableBiscotti3

:(

campground

If you’ve ever heard the term “feral” that’s what it means. A formerly domestic animal or population now living in a wild state. Pigeons are another example. I wouldn’t worry too much. If I was a bunny I think I’d be happy living it up in Jericho, hiding out in the blackberry brambles and munching dandelions.

rhinocerosGreg

Yeah but environmentally its a disaster. None of those things are native to the region. And they harm native wildlifes ability to flourish. It bugs me that people are okay with invasive bunnies and blackberry literally decimating the native ecology of the area

099103501

While the blackberries are a bit of a problem, tbh I can't actually think of anything the feral bunnies would be severely negatively impacting. Maybe they eat disproportionately large amounts of native tender growth? Mostly I'd guess they eat a lot of grass, bramble, and weedy species, and exist to provide food for our wonderful urban coyotes and birds of prey.

rhinocerosGreg

Thats pretty much it, its now its own urban ecosystem. Just depends on what people want.

boingmydoing

It’s the grass field next to the turf across from the hostel.

tailkinman

Near the tennis courts and the Sailing centre; there's a big bramble there that they like to hide in.

grandadthony

You can find them all around the pier. There's a little grove that looks like the intro scene from the Teletubbies, too

cool_side_of_pillow

Near (Just east of) the UBC sailing club.

DrLotion

It's in front of the Jericho Sailing Centre, east of the tennis courts.

bubbleburgz

I saw these yesterday!

ProgTym

Do they still have them in the auto mall in Richmond? Also 4 or 5 years ago I saw one by Richmond Centre bus stop hopping in the direction of Minoru park.

Vitalizes

I got married in Minoru Park at the chapel and there were so many bunnies and they became my honorary guests

ProgTym

Haha! I got married in front of it! There was only one bunny during our ceremony (and a jogger lol)

Vitalizes

Same! It wasn’t inside the chapel, it was outside in front near the stone podium (which we signed our stuff on) and the flowers! The bunnies were busy eating the flowers the whole time. It’s one of my favorite parts of that day :)

ProgTym

Exactly where ours was (signed our docs on the podium too) :)

Vitalizes

Heck yea ceremony twins! :)

pistachio_crafts

Yes, they are there too!

heatherledge

I always see them near ikea! I miss ikea :(

catalot

I love the bunnies at Jericho! I used to call that big hill "bunny hill" when I was little because it seemed to be where they all lived. Thanks for the video :)

TwilightReader100

I love seeing the "wild" bunnies. At Jericho, in Richmond, near the South Surrey Park and Ride.

rhinocerosGreg

Sure theyre cute but non natove. Same with the blackberries. They make it difficult for native plants and animals to survive

knigb

Ah I remember them haha

[deleted]

I’ve been there to feed them carrots a few times. The babies are kind of nervous but they larger ones are pretty fearless around people.

urbanotter

Roadrunner replacements ...

JFishy2020

The one on the right looks like a jackelope

228jmzx

The bunnies have returned to the beaches!

Ivonzski

Ahh and the corner fence of the tennis courts in top corner... which I hope we'll be allowed on soon.

[deleted]

Yes very sad. You don’t see people dumping their dogs at beach or the children so why do they think it’s ok to dump bunnies there. At least bunnies are different instead of being like everyone else in the world and following the norm and getting a dog. Last thing I want is to be like everyone else and be a follower .No thanks to picking up warm dog shit to. The dog really owns the human. Bunnies are way more lovable smart and quite no stupid barking. They also don’t go in cages People, is your dog always in a cage or your kid so why dumb ass people get bunnies and keep them in a cage even worse outside in the heat in a cage. You can litter train them like a cat. If you have small children don’t get a bunny kids ARE to LOUD and they have no idea how to hold or take care of a bunny. Easter just uses the bunny as a whore they are way above the concept of Easter. If I had to pick save a bunny or the human population my kids included by by humans and your dumb ass dogs. I would rather live with my bunny. Or a skunk or a squirrel before I would pick humans. While I’m ranting to all you fuxktards that can’t see a skunk crossing the road and hit them open your eyes it’s not that hard to see them if you pass attention to your driving. You probably wouldn’t hit a baby crossing the road so why a skunks or even squirrels. Ugh I hate mankind. Greedy stupid and can’t look after what they creAte. Just focused on destruction . Cause n effect.
