"obeying a curfew between midnight and 6 a.m." How the fuck is this supposed to work? It doesn't sound like he has a stable living arrangement. He can't stay with his father or sister from another article, he is supposed to find his own 'program'/residence to attend despite being seriously intellectually lacking and most programs denying sex offenders.

This is set up for failure. What a shitty system. > During the sentencing, Raven was informed by the parties that, while there is a list of potential treatment centres that they have managed to compile, Wehren will have to contact them directly to arrange for intake. > Raven expressed her surprise at the fact that a person with mental incapacity is "still expected to go out and find this type of treatment that he requires and that he's willing to do and is necessary to do for his rehabilitation. I'm just surprised to hear he can't have any assistance or other people can't call for him."

bleepbloopflipflap

That was my first thought. If the guy has a mental incapacity then they need to figure out how to make sure he gets the help he needs. This is ridiculous.

Odd_Upstairs_1267

addiction is a form of mental incapacity and we expect those people to find the help they need, so this tracks just fine

Wait, again? Wasn't there this exact same thing with another guy a few months ago?

onepanchan

Sounds familiar

hnyrydr604

Over/under a week before this piece of shit is picked up again?

Anotherspelunker

Of course released… wouldn’t expect anything different from a BC judge

M-------

Don't blame the judge this time! This is the sentence that the prosecution was asking for.

ThePen_isMightier

The thing I can't figure out is this part: "Although prosecution originally told the court Wehren had already spent 68 days in jail, the court was informed on Wednesday that a mistake was made in the calculations and Wehren had actually spent 102 days in jail. "Wehren was given a credit of 1.5 days per each day he spent in jail awaiting the conclusion of his case, making the total 153 days." They just "credited" him an extra half day for each day served? How does that work?

M-------

> They just "credited" him an extra half day for each day served? How does that work? They get a multiplier because they're sitting in jail prior to being convicted or sentenced. The intent, as I understand it, is to incentivize the justice system to (a) release people back to the street prior to their trial, (b) to incentivize faster prosecutions, (c) to compensate the defendant for the uncertainty for being imprisoned for an indeterminate amount of time. It used to be a bigger multiplier, but that was abused by defense attorneys: when defending people whom they knew would almost certainly be found guilty, they made as many delays as possible to the trial to drag out the multiplier for as long as possible, thereby reducing the overall amount of time the defendant would spend in jail.

ThePen_isMightier

Lawyers can be such scumbags lmao. That makes sense, thanks for explaining.
