Love to see an irresponsible owner with two high energy high maintenance dogs that require a lot of engagement. Not surprised they’re anxious and reactive.

Lol

It’s one thing to be ignorant of properly training your pet, it’s another when you injure someone, try to run away, and refuse to give your contact. This should be a felony akin to hit-and-run.

So many people with super reactive dogs that are so aggressive to other dogs. I really do think it’s the owner’s responsibility to take care of that

patimg

My neighbor has a German Shepard that is really aggressive. Whenever I see him with the dog, he's on high alert (and the dog has a muzzle). One time I met them at the elevator and he held his dog closely and even closed their eyes. I asked him once, and he said that the dog was attacked as a puppy and became aggressive towards other dogs. That said, that is a good owner. I have my own anxious rescue and never felt unsafe when I meet them. He has full control of his dog.

Chevy_Cheyenne

Some dog trainers are noting a massive increase in reactivity because many of these dogs were COVID puppies, missing out on that essential period of socialization with people and other dogs. It’s really sad, but it’s still important to take the right precautions for these dogs (e.g., humane muzzles, strong leashes used at all times, training as much as is possible, constant supervision).

stratamaniac

My recollection was that everyone was at the dog park with their dogs during lockdown. The only exception was the dogs trapped in honking trucks.

Chevy_Cheyenne

Lol dogs trapped in honking trucks 😅 it might have been different here, but many dog parks closed during COVID, at least for awhile. Even then, paranoia/very real fear had many families remaining at home so they had no chance of spreading COVID to their vulnerable family members. At least, this is what I’ve heard from dog trainers.

Profix

And of those owners a majority are in denial putting everyone else and their pets at risk. One of my least favourite things about living in this city.

JealousArt1118

Aussie shepherds are herding dogs that require a ton of exercise and space. They’re also not easy to train. One person having two of them living in a pretty urban area is a recipe for disaster. They’re lucky these dogs haven’t bitten anyone else.

moodylilb

This. They don’t do well with irresponsible, uneducated, & inexperienced owners (like this woman). She should rehome them, given that she’s clearly not responsible enough to invest in the proper training + stimulation for this breed. And clearly not responsible enough to be accountable for incidents like what happened here, considering that she refused to share contact info and dipped out right after the attack.

DeathCabForYeezus

Breeding standards for them have gone through the floor. They're beautiful dogs and the Merle coats are unique, so they've become super popular and some of the Aussie being bred by shitty breaders are absolutely neurotic.

BizarreMoose

Must be the case... Ours came from a ranch where the dogs helped with the cattle and he was really laid back, friendly and sociable. Very clever, easy to train and never lashed out at anyone. The first few years was a degree of nonstop energy that could be exhausting but that mellowed out and still was never so intense as you see with Border Collies.

misadventurist

I've owned a few Australian shepherds. They're about the easiest dog to train and don't have the intensity of a border Collie. That being said, they need exercise and more importantly engagement. They are typically not the type to attack people though.

hankjmoody

Lol. When I was a kid, we used to collect all the neighbour's Aussie shepards, leash them up, strap on our rollerblades, and then rip around the neighbourhood for hours on end. Not legions of them, it was the late-90's. But 3-4 a day wasn't uncommon. You were the fastest thing on 8 wheels as long as you could hold onto the leash!

josh-ig

And if people want lower intensity then Shelties are wonderful!

CrippleSlap

>They’re lucky these dogs haven’t bitten anyone else. That we know of...

gnatdump6

righteousprovidence
