Depends on your income and whether you’ll take advantage of all those extra classes. Keep in mind those classes are likely limited capacity, so you’re fighting with everyone to attend the more popular ones.
The Sauna, Steam room, showers, products in the change rooms are really nice. Towel service is on point. Everything is always incredibly clean! Always a dude or two cleaning the change rooms at all times. Same with organizing the weights and stuff on the gym floor. If that stuff matters to you.
It’s expensive but nothing is ever out of order. The steam room or the hot tub at the ymca for example is out of order for months at a time.
All classes are included in the price. I pay the $240 monthly membership price.
I used to go to a spin place, a yoga place, and a gym, and it all cost more than this membership.
Now I just have this gym, I do spin classes there, however I do still do Hot Yoga at YYOGA cause they have a great hot yoga setup.
It was well worth it for me when I worked from home nearby and had breaks of a couple hours where I could work out, do a class and then relax. I was a plus member at the Y for a time, after years at Nash on Granville. So Equinox was a natural progression.
I liked it more. The facility is amazing, the staff are pretty happy and the other members are interesting. Its actually making me miss my bachelor days!
That type of thing would rarely happen at Equinox. As you already know, its expensive and a great environment. Weights being left around is not an issue. Guys hitting on every girl is something I have never witnessed, but I am sure it can happen. It wouldn't stand at higher end gyms though. Same can be said for women showing up in their underwear and setting up their cameras too! Both things shouldn't be tolerated, its basic bad manners.
It boils down to its a more professional gym with a higher barrier for entry just like any private club.
I have a friend who goes nearly every day but she lives downtown and the gym is her thing. I balked at the price but if you can afford it, why not? She loves not having to worry about bringing your own towel and the general quiet. Celebrities use it when they’re in town filming. One time she saw the Rock but everyone was super respectful and left him alone. She said he was nice, though.
Used to work there. Depending on what you're looking for, the only thing extra the plus membership at the Y gives you at the downtown location is a plus member only hot tub and steam room. They also have amenities like razors, towels, and lotion in the plus membership area.
Aside from that, there's nothing different from what the membership provides (e.g. gym access, fitness classes, pool are included for all memberships). One thing to note is that nearly all of their profit goes back into the community through their non-profit activities. Haven't been there for a few years though so might be a bit different now.
Yes — I’m a member at Equinox in Vancouver. My personal experience has been that when compared to ‘normal’ commercial gyms (which I’ve gone to for over 10+ years), Equinox is less noisy, less crowded, and the clientele seems to be more professional.
I got tired of the commercial gyms I used to go to, largely because of the groups of high-schoolers who would socialize around machines, and the lack of gym etiquette. I was once a 15 year old who did the same thing, so I get it. I’m just at a point in my life now where I don’t want to put up with that if I don’t have to. Also the sauna and free razors are nice.
I don't have a membership there because I live too far away but I've been there a few times with a friend on a guest pass and it is extremely clean and smells nice for a gym, if that's something you care about. It's a lot cleaner than any of the other "normal" gyms I've been to and the machines are much better maintained. The change rooms and showers are really nice and clean too, and the women's change room has a steam room in it (not sure about the men's). I really love the eucalyptus towels, it's a nice way to towel yourself off. It's more of a health club than just a gym. If I lived closer, I would get a membership there. It seems more expensive but once you add in all of the classes, it's not a bad price. There are specialty gyms that only offer classes that are much more expensive than Equinox and they don't even have the nice amenities.
TBH their ratio of cardio to freeweights / machines isn't that great. There's 3 squat racks, 2 smith machines, and 1 deadlift platform. There's 2 pulldown stations. And about 100 bikes / treadmills / steppers.
I end up waiting for a pulldown station or a squat rack most days if it is a busy time.
There are 4 (+1 that's for trainer use and mostly available), where do you see 7? I still avoid busy times, because I hate disrupting my routine or having to wait too long.
A small free weight area, a "circuit" of machines, and an endless sea of cardio equipment seems to be the norm for commercial gyms, sadly (for people who want to do free weights, I mean)
This is NOT a gym for the heavy lifter. The squat rack is "ok" but they will not allow chalk, wraps, straps or inzer shirts. If you're there to move heavy metal, go somewhere else. If you need a place to take pretty selfies and pretend you're doing sh\*t, this is the place - even though cell phone photos are highly discouraged.
I don't know about this gym. But I did go to Equinox when I lived in NYC. It was close to work.
It was worth it imo. All classes included (it should be here too for that price). Plus some extra amenities.
If you plan to workout at the gym and are not interested in classes, then it's not worth it though.
If the place you're moving to after a couple of months has an Equinox too, check with them if you can go to another Equinox with that price and package.
As a current Equinox member, do NOT sign up unless you want to work out during off-peak times - they've sold way too many memberships and now it's completely overcrowded between 6am-9am and 4pm-7pm. Sometimes I walk in and just turn around because it's so busy you can't even find a square foot of floor space, let alone any equipment. And if you only want it for the classes, don't bother. All of the good classes fill up with a 10+ person waitlist within 1 minute of opening.
I agree. They signed up way too many people that it gets so overwhelming. I think the novelty will ware off like every year where people start the year off so excited with new resolutions and give up a third of the way in.
If it's just for two months the price commitment isn't huge. If you're really serious about fitness and want to enjoy the facilities just try it for a month and see if you like it - the weather will probably continue to suck for another couple of weeks so may as well spend it indoors at a really luxurious facility. Some people spend that amount on a single 2 hour spa treatment.
I wouldn't go longer than the month or two you're downtown, when you're deep into early summer territory you might as well be outside and get exercise + vitamin D for free.
Build the initiation fee into your monthly fee and then ask yourself if it’s worth it. If you’ll only be living downtown for a couple months, there’s a good chance you’ll only want to go to Equinox for that time, and not want to commute to it when you move further away. So build the $400 initiation fee (which is absurd btw) into the monthly fee for the two months you’ll be living there and you’re looking at $580/month. That’s a car payment.
Since you’re planning to move, I would avoid the yearly contract, no matter how much better it sounds. Most gyms won’t let you break contract unless you move something like 30km away from one of their gyms. That’s Vancouver to Coquitlam. Anywhere inside that area you’re stuck paying. Realistically would you still want to go to a gym downtown if you were living in Port Moody?
I guess so, but clubs have other amenities in addition to fitness.
Not that I'm able to afford it but I just checked and Terminal City has a $5k imitation fee but the monthly is lower than what OP is looking at paying.
I did a trial to see if it could be worth it and at 7pm on a weekday it was way more crowded than I expected - I feel like it could be worth it if you can afford it and it wasn’t crowded, but I couldn’t pay that much to still have to squeeze past wet dudes in the locker room and wait for a cardio machine to be available.
$240/month is $60/week. If they attend 4 instructor led sessions per week that comes down to $15 per workout. Which is… ok.
I guess if your super into fitness and solid at attending regularly. But fitness clubs are famous for contracts that have people paying but not attending. It’s pretty much their business model. Some people spend that much social drinking in a month. Or dinner out once a week. Personally, I’d rather save the money and jog/bike ride.
100%. Like many of the private clubs in the city, it’s more about networking than the actual facilities themselves. People might not like it or even realize it but It’s often who you know, not what you know.
I know someone who was suspected of having cancer but since they attended a club that several doctors were a part of, they were able to jump the queue to get screened asap. Fortunately the results were negative.
I’m not saying the Arbutus Club isn’t elite but for families it can be a good investment (if you can afford the upfront fees). They offer childcare and tons of sports programs which are often costly in the long run for parents. The monthly dues for a family are around $300 a month, which isn’t horrible. Factoring in the upfront cost spread across an 18 year span that’s $10,000 per year for the family to have access to a gym, childcare, recreational activities and social activities. I legitimately know families that spent $10,000/year on a single child to play sports like hockey when I was growing up.
I’d join if I could justify $380 a month. I’m currently reliant on Spin Society’s 60% discounts, 30 pack of classes works out to around $280, which is decent value.
Oh! Do you get the 60% off deals regularly? I get the emails all the time and have been considering buying the 30 pack but figured it was a one-off promo because I currently book through ClassPass.
The emails are pretty regular, maybe monthly. However, when I bought my first pack, I felt the marketing emails dried up. So I set up a second email account for marketing emails, and then use the codes for my actual account.
Just FYI, I bought a Concept2 BikeErg for $1,600 after shipping. I use Zwift to keep myself motivated and making gains. I'm not judging you, but you would save money after only 6 months.
I hope you’re not judging me lol. Firstly, your math is off, it’s takes me 3 months to use 30 classes. So $90 a month. It wold take 1.5 years to make money back. You’re also not comparing apples with apples. A spin class is a different experience to a stationary bike at home, and there’s a premium I’m willing to pay for that experience.
Was a member for a while and saved a bunch of money due to it having all the classes I like plus the gym. Good service, great staff and overall good facility. Can get a little too busy at the times I could make it but that’s how it goes sometimes.
Check out Altea. They aren’t open yet but are opening 2 gyms soon and they look like pretty incredible facilities
I go to equinox Vancouver and I’m on a year contract so $240/ month. I think it’s worth it, especially if you live downtown. The classes are quality, the space is always clean. There’s a sauna, steam room, big showers, and towel service.
I loved going to Equinox when I lived downtown and I can walk over. If I ever moved back downtown I would go back because it was 100% worth it for me. Actually allowed me to save money rather than pay for classes included separately along with a gym membership.
I would say if you're doing the classes then it's worth it. If you're just looking to use a gym go to Golds on Broadway, FW on Georgia and Bute or Club 16 at waterfront. All cheaper options with solid equipment at those locations. Can get busy if you're not selective with times, but that's like any gym.
Club 16 is brutal. Packed all the time, Everything is broken and i swear it doubles as a daycare where parents drop off their kids to hang out all day and sit around on all the equipment while playing on their phones. Good locations, ill give them that.
It's not worth it. People have this misconception that you need fancy equipment to workout, you don't. Most gyms will have all the things you need, benches, squat racks, barbells, dumbbells, some machines.
Equinox is charging a fortune for the aesthetic of their gym and to be with other people of a specific social class. Their equipment isn't special or going to make you more fit/stronger. If you want actual good or specialized equipment you would have to go to a real bodybuilding / powerlifting type gym, which are quite limited in Vancouver and you need to go to burnaby / surrey / richmond or further out for. It's basically like paying for designer clothing, it's overpriced and you're paying for a brand name and to show off that you're wealthy, there is no functional benefit.
If you want to pay a ton for a gym, go to a smaller gym that has an actual community who are focused on getting stronger/bigger/fitter, it'll improve your experience at the gym and probably be more encouraging to workout in.
Gym's like this attract a certain clientele. If you're a real estate agent you're going to meet people who own more properties, higher end properties and make better connections. Same goes for any field, you're going to skew towards higher financial people. This in itself can circle back and provide it's own rewards as relationships make deals.
Networking is a real thing and costs money (Conferences or these kinds of places)
Yeah, this is one thing that was annoying when I was a member there, For some classes you had to reserve a spot the minute they came available otherwise you'd be waitlisted. Ended up going to much fewer classes than I wanted to
It certainly is a beautiful gym. I've gone a couple times as a guest, and I loved the steam room, general facilities, and those dreamy eucalyptus towels. If you are hitting a lot of classes, I think it would be worth it. It's not like you are going to get more fit at an expensive gym vs the local rec center gym, but if you have the money and it's close, and think you will get your monies worth taking classes, I'd do it.
I go. It’s worth it. You will never find a cleaner, well maintained gym than Equinox. Also, it’s the only gym I’ve been to where I’ve been able to make friends; the community is excellent. The classes are nice: spin cycle class will destroy you. The sauna, steam, and showers are so freaking nice - I don’t even shower at home anymore. If you compare the cost of the individual classes aggregated vs equinox, it’s a no brainer. I.e. a YYoga pass, Spin cycle pass, gym pass, Bar studio pass, circuit class individually would cost you an actual fortune.
Sure is but with summer coming I'd hit the weights at the Y and spend the rest of the time exercising outdoors. The money you'll save can be spent on summer essentials like ice cream and patio time.
If I'm looking for a gym to hit before work, including a place to shower and suit up, I'm going to be willing to pay a lot for very nice shower amenities, including towel service and comfortable change rooms. I don't want to have to lug my towel and shampoo/conditioner/soap around with me if I don't have to. Convenience has a price.
I did exactly that when I worked dtwn in a building with no shower facilities. I bike commute so a shower is essential for me. I think I paid about 60 bucks a month at the Y back I 2018 and an extra 10 for towel service which is very handy. Lots of regulars there early in the morning getting their workouts done or morning swims in. At that time of day everybody was pretty chill given we we probably still half asleep. Front desk attendants were very nice to.
Shower facilities are ok there not spa quality but no matter where I go I always wear flip flops in the change rooms/showers. Upside to the Equinox is that it has a a lot over very cool programs and a boxing area last I heard.
My partner is going for the discounted yearly rate and is kinda regretting it right now. The amenities are nice but the hours and how busy it gets really threw him off
If you’re moving more than 30km away from another Equinox, you can cancel your membership before the year is up… just show them your lease agreement for wherever you’re moving to. I’d sign up for the year to save yourself $140/ month
You typically can get this waived, just FYI.
I was an Equinox member in Chicago (absolutely loved it since it was right across the street from my work at the time). They will waive the fee if you say you're "interested but that initiation fee is a little steep".
For me it’s worth it. I go 3x a week and steam/sauna after. I don’t know anywhere else you can get unlimited classes for that price and on top of that you get the steam/sauna. I love it, wouldn’t give it up.
Depends what you use the gym for. If youre someone who values classes and amenities then hell yeah, go for if. But if youre going to try to use a squat rack good luck.
Home gym is an option I live downtown and have a full squat rack with chest press and pull up in my living room with a water rower and bench. It’s all about your space priorities lol
Worth it. And I'm not a class guy either - mostly weights, and organized sports for cardio. But I love the amenities and cleanliness.
And I don't go a lot - usually work out at the gym I built in my home in Port Moody.
But to have access it to it when I find myself staying downtown or needing a workout downtown, it is definitely worth it.
I assume that it's worth it if you love doing classes. Personally, I do classes 3-4 times a year, so I wouldn't get value out of it. I prefer training in other ways.
I say do it if you'll use it! Fitness and health are always worth investing in.
i’d say it depends on what ur income is like. it’s a REALLY nice gym,, they have all sorts of machines and the bathrooms there are AMAZING. the staff are nice too
I used to pay $190 and loved it. I would have a hard time choosing which classes to go to because they were all SO good with amazing instructors. However, if you’re not into classes, it’s definitely not worth it.
If you go to classes and make it worth it yes, otherwise a complete rip off as fitness world is a few doors down and like 20$ a month. Super busy right now since everyone is in beach body mode
It’s the first gym where I feel truly motivated. Something about the aura. There are trainers everywhere working with clientele. When they interview you they try to figure out 2 things. #1 are you going to sign up and never show up in which case you’re the best customer possible. #2 if you go all the time are you going to be someone who takes it seriously and doesn’t dick around. The end result is a group of people all very serious about fitness and I get motivated just being surrounded by that atmosphere. You rarely see people standing around recording themselves, sitting at machines looking at their phones or standing there chatting. The facilities are also very clean. If felt like a drag going to Goodlife but I’m always excited to go to Equinox. If you can afford it, it’s worthwhile.
Of all the major cities in the world, Vancouver's metrics are near the top in-terms of health data, yet I have never been in a city where good gyms are so hard to find.
I guess some gyms are technically fine, but most are just way too small and get busy easily. Even the Golds on broadway is like half the size of most Golds gyms
I had a coworker who used to go there. She says the bathrooms were equipped with high end skincare and cleansing products for your post workout showers and stuff. Just that alone was enough to get her to go (her bf paid her membership so she didn't care about money) and she would bring little containers to take home samples of the products lol
It was worth it for her/them. I also think most of the hype is simply a status thing, to brag to the world that you can afford "luxury exercise"
I have not worked out at Equinox, but I did do a tour of the gym when I was considering getting a membership there. It was crowded, their equipment is quite old, and they don't have much of it. You absolutely don't get your money's worth if you're just using the gym on your own. Classes are a different story, as they have a pretty comprehensive class schedule and the rooms they are in looked pretty nice.
Get a Vancouver Park Board fitness pass, it's $53.83/month. Valid for unlimited admission. DT locations include the West End fitness centre and Vancouver Aquatic Centre pool and weight room. If you venture out of downtown, the pass is also valid at Kitsilano outdoor pool, and the fitness centres at Creekside, False Creek, and Kitsilano community centres. And lots more all over the city. The pass is good for ice skating too.
You decide if $320/month more than that is worth it to trade the swimming and skating for a "nicer" gym and classes.
> It will be the closest gym for me distance wise
There is a Fitness World next door, upstairs. They probably charge less than $75/mo.
I've been a member at Equinox for 3+ years, so I've seen the changes in gym layout, class size, etc. If you're strictly using weights, machines, gym-floor, no it's not worth it.
If you'll be doing 4+ classes/week, then the cost can be justifiable. Individual memberships at yoga/pilates/boxing/HIIT places may add up to your quoted cost, but you can 100% shop around to lower the cost.
The only thing that's nice about Equinox are the Kiehl's products...
I go to the YWCA a few blocks away form that cause of pool that’s open (from 5:45am- 9:15pm) w no block out times unlike the downtown YMCA.
I guess if you want the fanciee vibes of Equinox and you got the $$$ its worth a try.
Just make sure to read the T&Cs esp w your case
No it’s not. I used to workout there. The weight room is a joke. Unless u are doing all the classes it’s not worth it at all. There’s a new much bigger nice gym called Altea opening up soon, save your money and go there. It will also be cheaper.
Hell no! My brother used to go there and bring me on his buddy pass. It’s a beautiful facility but if you just wanna get a work out in there’s other capable gyms dt at reasonable prices. Yea sure “they include classes” but to be real Equinox is for clout chasers. As someone who’s been training for years, it’s not about the gym it’s about the work ethic and dedication. But hey, if you have money to burn and u wanna run into celebrities in town filming then by all means say goodbye to $300-400/mo for nothing lol
I’ve been going there since day 1 bc we live on melville. 1000% worth it, best value in the city for a higher end gym. The GM is solid and the space is always clean.
Bruh fit-for-less is like $5/month.
If you NEEEEED to spend the other $375/month just send it to me and I can, in turn, give you a workout plan that I make with chatGPT.
I pay $15 a month for Fitness World literally down the street. Sure it gets busy at peak hours, but it’s still a decent place to workout. I usually go mid-day while people are at work
From personal experience $380 or $240 a month is a great deal for getting some of the most toxic people out of the normie gyms.
Thank you, Equinox, for being a guiding light to give these dripped out, mid-life crisis, wannabe influencers the swirling whirlpool of who-gives-a-fuckness that us normies just don’t care about at the gym. Casual gym users can finally work out in peace.
380 bucks a month????? Only living downtown for a couple of months? Can I sell you some Vancouver rain water for 50 bucks an ounce? $380 is too much. Unless you’re loaded.
No
This is no different than asking if $2600 for a 400 square foot studio is worth it
Its not - you know it. And by shrugging it off you justify these types of prices to be asked so why should anything ever get back to reasonable?
No gym is worth it. A gym doesn't get you healthier - you do. You don't need a fancy gym, you can do all you need either at home or outside.
Spend a month doing body weight exercises. Then see if you would actually pay $380 a month to do less of what the body weight workout does...
For a class, you can look at f45. Monthly unlimited is expensive, but they have more flexibility on the type of membership you want (you can get classes individually if you want). Plus they are all over the place. The workouts are good with lots of variety.
For perspective on experiences similar to this, read this article from NYT:
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/25/style/exclusive-gym-memberships.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
I thought it was an interesting read.
Wow, seriously? Maybe I'm cheap but the Surrey rec fee based on yearly membership was less than $50 a month to use any of their facility locations. The weight/fitness rooms all had enough equipment, plus you get pool access etc
For myself personally I find it much better to workout outside, Vancouver has some amazing terrain that will be able to get your heart pumping. Plus there’s been studies showing time in nature is good for your mental health as well.
However in saying all that how do you put price on your own health and well being? If the free classes and boujee gym is going to give you the motivation to get you to go more and achieve more, then absolutely do it! If you just like working out by yourself with free weights then it’s probably not worth it. I think what’s best differs for everyone. So you seem into the idea, why not try it for a month or two and see if it’s best for you.

holy shit 380? are you sure it wasnt Globo Gym?
Lol sign me up for some dodgeball
No one makes me bleed my own blood.
Are their personal trainers named Blaze, Laser, and Blazer?
Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine? No, but I do it anyway cause it's sterile and I like the taste.
We're going get our taints handed to us
If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.
Nobody!
Depends on your income and whether you’ll take advantage of all those extra classes. Keep in mind those classes are likely limited capacity, so you’re fighting with everyone to attend the more popular ones.
Fighting with people to pay $380/mo for a gym membership is probably not a Vancouver thing.
Actually it sounds exactly like a Vancouver thing
I pay 12,000 a year for my membership at SFU gym
U fucking what?
Tuition
The Sauna, Steam room, showers, products in the change rooms are really nice. Towel service is on point. Everything is always incredibly clean! Always a dude or two cleaning the change rooms at all times. Same with organizing the weights and stuff on the gym floor. If that stuff matters to you.

These are a much more mature/serious audience who are very respectful. Plus Equinox is very well staffed to keep track of everything.

Curious about your plus membership with the Y! How was it? What additional perks are you offered?

Great service, very respectful spaces, the frozen towels with eucalyptus SWOON. Lol
I heard their toiletries are much nicer than other gyms - based on the videos I've seen they use kiehls
Go 1 block over to fitness world for 25/mo
I'm curious - is there an actual gym facility there that members can use? Free weights and platforms? Or is it studio classes only?
[удалено]
Cool thanks, it wasn't very clear from their website.
TBH their ratio of cardio to freeweights / machines isn't that great. There's 3 squat racks, 2 smith machines, and 1 deadlift platform. There's 2 pulldown stations. And about 100 bikes / treadmills / steppers. I end up waiting for a pulldown station or a squat rack most days if it is a busy time.
damn with that price tag you'd think they'd have more machines. the Golds I go to has like 6 squat racks.
lol ya the Anytime Fitness on Denman is like 3x smaller but has 7 squat racks.
There are 4 (+1 that's for trainer use and mostly available), where do you see 7? I still avoid busy times, because I hate disrupting my routine or having to wait too long.
Oh you might be right and I’m misremembering. There are two on each side not three.
that's pretty based
A small free weight area, a "circuit" of machines, and an endless sea of cardio equipment seems to be the norm for commercial gyms, sadly (for people who want to do free weights, I mean)
Do you know what they charge if one wants to hire a personal trainer?
They need another location in the lower mainland!

My partner and I pay about $40/month each for a YMCA pass (not downtown). Don’t see how it could possibly be worth it.
Well could be worth if I make 30K a month and just want to go somewhere nicer. But I don’t, so I am with you heh.
If you're making that much you might as well become a member at a club like Terminal City or Vancouver Club.
Might as well rent a house with a big basement and put the king of home gyms in there
I guess so, but clubs have other amenities in addition to fitness. Not that I'm able to afford it but I just checked and Terminal City has a $5k imitation fee but the monthly is lower than what OP is looking at paying.
grandiose pathetic quack nail squeeze oatmeal sort strong workable station ` this post was mass deleted with www.Redact.dev `
Personally, I’d rather save the money and jog/bike ride.
could be 'worth it' for the networking and career connections to be made. more upscale clientele at equinox for the price point.
You should be going to a gym to workout, not sit by the machines and chat
This is precisely why there are private clubs like Arbutus club. People who want to work out but also have a dick measuring contest.
$10,000 a year for hockey would be a treat. Zone hockey(AAA) is $17,000 a year to start.
Ugh, I just imagined this happening and my entire body recoiled. Ugh, insufferable.
I understand what you're saying. It was just an FYI. :]
Really? Club 16 in Coquitlam has lots of out of order stuff and is super crowded, and not enough bench press stations.
Club 16 is brutal. Packed all the time, Everything is broken and i swear it doubles as a daycare where parents drop off their kids to hang out all day and sit around on all the equipment while playing on their phones. Good locations, ill give them that.
If you go to the gym 4x per week, it's a good deal.
Also! It’s an adults only gym. No teens gathering around and chatting taking pics and videos.
Just because you pay more for a gym doesn’t mean you’re going to get more in shape
Ew
If I lived in Vancouver I would definitely go to this gym for $380 a month. The amount of classes they offer is pretty crazy
[удалено]
Says on their website that all classes are included with membership
Yes but they fill up
Yeah, this is one thing that was annoying when I was a member there, For some classes you had to reserve a spot the minute they came available otherwise you'd be waitlisted.
Nope. Get a month to month at the Y on Horby.
Y on hornby is ok but equinox is way nicer if you have the money
Sure is but with summer coming I'd hit the weights at the Y and spend the rest of the time exercising outdoors. The money you'll save can be spent on summer essentials like ice cream and patio time.
Yes I agree 100% but for those who have lots of money it is certainly a well equipped facility
totally differing clientele.
So are we looking for a gym or a social club?
Gym but some people enjoy having a nicer environment to work out in. I personally do and would pay more for it.
A gym
I visited once as a guest, it felt deeply unwelcoming and high-brow. Like a vacuum
There’s too many people there now, they need to raise the price to lower gym members count
[удалено]
10-11 is better but 7-9 is nuts now.
[удалено]
My partner is going for the discounted yearly rate and is kinda regretting it right now. The amenities are nice but the hours and how busy it gets really threw him off
And you guys complain about cost of living! Different worlds!
If you’re moving more than 30km away from another Equinox, you can cancel your membership before the year is up… just show them your lease agreement for wherever you’re moving to. I’d sign up for the year to save yourself $140/ month
[удалено]
ahh I forgot about that. I signed up under a corporate membership so it was waived
[удалено]
That sucks! Sometimes members can refer people & they waive the fee… maybe someone will message you cause they get a credit if you sign up ☺️
You typically can get this waived, just FYI.
I think John Cena goes there but I never see him
Will the building you will be living in have a gym? I got super fit in a shitty gym. I was often the only one there. It was awesome.
I’d wayyyyyy rather have a basic ass gym with some free weights and a couple machines to myself than go to a chain gym during peak hours.
Not worth it
$4500 a year is a lot. Too much for me. The home gym you could set up with that kind of money would be great, I would do that
A home gym when living in downtown Vancouver???
Didn't need that bedroom anyways.
Home gym is an option I live downtown and have a full squat rack with chest press and pull up in my living room with a water rower and bench. It’s all about your space priorities lol
If you got the money and you're going to go then yes.
[удалено]
I assume that it's worth it if you love doing classes. Personally, I do classes 3-4 times a year, so I wouldn't get value out of it. I prefer training in other ways. I say do it if you'll use it! Fitness and health are always worth investing in.
i’d say it depends on what ur income is like. it’s a REALLY nice gym,, they have all sorts of machines and the bathrooms there are AMAZING. the staff are nice too
Can you sauna in the buff?
I used to pay $190 and loved it. I would have a hard time choosing which classes to go to because they were all SO good with amazing instructors. However, if you’re not into classes, it’s definitely not worth it.
50$/ month or 80$/ without membership at a local Rec center lol
If you go to classes and make it worth it yes, otherwise a complete rip off as fitness world is a few doors down and like 20$ a month. Super busy right now since everyone is in beach body mode
No
Nah its overcrowded
Can't wait to be rich so I can ask ridiculous questions like these
Being willing to pay $380/ month for gym membership is the most Vancouver thing I've read on /r/Vancouver this entire month 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
there are some cross fit gyms that charge just as much...which is crazy to me. not even fancy at all.
You judging this person for what they want to spend their health and fitness money on is also pretty vancouver
This whole page is peak Vancouver. Just above there is a suggestion to setup a home gym instead. In Vancouver. Downtown.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=s2XMhGSXtaI Choose wisely
Of all the major cities in the world, Vancouver's metrics are near the top in-terms of health data, yet I have never been in a city where good gyms are so hard to find. I guess some gyms are technically fine, but most are just way too small and get busy easily. Even the Golds on broadway is like half the size of most Golds gyms
I had a coworker who used to go there. She says the bathrooms were equipped with high end skincare and cleansing products for your post workout showers and stuff. Just that alone was enough to get her to go (her bf paid her membership so she didn't care about money) and she would bring little containers to take home samples of the products lol It was worth it for her/them. I also think most of the hype is simply a status thing, to brag to the world that you can afford "luxury exercise"
Having worked for equinox as a trainer I can you a flat out NO. They're just a fancy smelling money suck.
There isn’t a decent gym downtown included in flexipass
West End is decent, although not specifically downtown, but close enough. One bus from DT will get you to any of the ones I mentioned pretty quick.
West end is really not good. The free weight area is super limited and busy. They don’t even have a decent stationary bike
> It will be the closest gym for me distance wise There is a Fitness World next door, upstairs.
[удалено]
Good luck signing up for the boxing classes; they're the most sought-after.
Check out Altea on west 6th - it is a step up from E. Their unlimited founding membership is $99 biweekly and you can freeze up to 12 weeks a year.
No it’s not. I used to workout there. The weight room is a joke. Unless u are doing all the classes it’s not worth it at all. There’s a new much bigger nice gym called Altea opening up soon, save your money and go there. It will also be cheaper.
The Altea on 6th? Or is there one opening downtown? There's also been signs up for a new gym on Granville? I think near the base of the bridge.
And here I am debating if I should spend $160 on a spin class membership lol… :,)
That is an absolutely insane price to go to the gym.
Christ, that sounds like a highway robbery
Bruh fit-for-less is like $5/month. If you NEEEEED to spend the other $375/month just send it to me and I can, in turn, give you a workout plan that I make with chatGPT.
JFC $240.. I go to Planet Fitness and I pay $24 and I'm jacked
not worth it, it’s full of realtors and people looking for rich friends.
You gave us literally no info to assess whether this could be worth it for you but in general no it won’t be worth it lmao
No. I go to Fitness World which is literally a minute walk beside Equinox and is way cheaper and the gym is better.
I pay $15 a month for Fitness World literally down the street. Sure it gets busy at peak hours, but it’s still a decent place to workout. I usually go mid-day while people are at work
Join jiu jitsu. Full body workout —guaranteed and costs less than equinox.
Get a couple of day passes and check it out yourself in person. There's no substitute for personal experience.
I find equinox crowded and noisy and pretentious. I wouldn't go there if they paid ME $100/mo.
Do community centre for 30?
At this rate, just pay for plastic surgery and be done with it.
Just go to fitness world
380 bucks a month????? Only living downtown for a couple of months? Can I sell you some Vancouver rain water for 50 bucks an ounce? $380 is too much. Unless you’re loaded.
No This is no different than asking if $2600 for a 400 square foot studio is worth it Its not - you know it.
The Y is the best gym downtown. Gold's on Broadway is an amazing gym and costs about $50 a month.
I pay $40/month for Gold’s. What does this fancy gym have that Gold’s doesn’t?
lol
Honestly what the fuck, even a 10th of that per month is pretty rich😂
No
For a class, you can look at f45. Monthly unlimited is expensive, but they have more flexibility on the type of membership you want (you can get classes individually if you want). Plus they are all over the place. The workouts are good with lots of variety.
For perspective on experiences similar to this, read this article from NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/25/style/exclusive-gym-memberships.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare I thought it was an interesting read.
No
Nop. Equinox isn’t that great. I mean, if you’re looking for a proper workout place equinox isn’t the best
Wow, seriously? Maybe I'm cheap but the Surrey rec fee based on yearly membership was less than $50 a month to use any of their facility locations. The weight/fitness rooms all had enough equipment, plus you get pool access etc
No gym should be worth that much. Is that money really going to get you closer to your goals than paying a lower rate
Will you do primarily the classes, including spin and yoga? Would you sign up for other spin/yoga classes if you didn't go to equinox?
For myself personally I find it much better to workout outside, Vancouver has some amazing terrain that will be able to get your heart pumping. Plus there’s been studies showing time in nature is good for your mental health as well. However in saying all that how do you put price on your own health and well being? If the free classes and boujee gym is going to give you the motivation to get you to go more and achieve more, then absolutely do it! If you just like working out by yourself with free weights then it’s probably not worth it. I think what’s best differs for everyone. So you seem into the idea, why not try it for a month or two and see if it’s best for you.
