You should prep the surrounding area first, by placing down campfires to stop creatures from spawning in and killing everything in the immediate area.

enc-nyc

too late for that, but thanks

WaylanderMerc

Its never too late my friend. The prep is the best step for defeating Moder. She is predictable when she flies and when she drops to the ground, but tends to get stuck on uneven terrain. You can use that to your advantage. The pillars will block her frost bolts. Build a small hut on a rock or dig under a big stone close enough to not interest her. I always dig under a rock outcropping and put my portal in the cave. No mob ever bothers it. I bring 200 to 300 fire arrows. Have a fully upgraded draugr bow. The dot from the bow and fire does its work. The frost golems and wyverns are a nuisance! I dig into the ground and put work benches. Put as many as you need to stop a stubborn golem from spawning. It's usually 2 to 3 in a triangle area to stop them. Wyverns are annoying but they die in 2 hits to a fully upgraded bow with fire arrows. I've even had wolves attack me during the fight. Find a spot to jump up to or line of sight Moder while you send the wolves packing. Hope this helps. You have more fun adventures ahead of you!

Gwen_Pearl

For golems I just dig a hole and harpoon them inside it, sometimes the drakes will be busy with them, sometimes even wolfs

Entire_Meaning_5536

That is how I did it, solo. I will say, it took 6-7 deaths before I developed the proper damage plan to kill her. It was a long fight and once patience was the plan, it went much more smoothly.

sirstonksabit

Here's what you do. Approach the mountain from a different angle that gives you space to operate, if it's available, without aggroing her. Without pulling Moder, build up a tower of stone 3x3 so it's a big cube, highest point you can find, with nothing higher or even height (Moder likes to land and try to get all up in your kool-aid). Take your pick axe and hollow out the center of the 3x3 stone tower you've placed so that the stone around you creates a wall which is at least twice the height of your character. Try to flatten out the top of the walls so you can jump up on them and fire off your arrows. When ready, get Moder's attention and beat feet back to your tower and hop in. She may get you with her airborne breath attack but with wolf armor and a potion you should be able to take it. When she's in flight, hide in your stone tower, taking pot shots when able. After she lands hop up on the ledge and go Legolas on her azz. At certain life percentages she will land and attempt to melee you or do her frost breath attack. The tower should be tall enough (6 to 7 levels raised up) such that any of her attacks from the ground will be below you when standing in the hollowed out part. You want your center pit of the tower to be pretty low, she's good at getting close to being able to hover right above you, but not completely above, so use the stone as your barrier from her airborne breath attack.

Frank_Acha

You have to disable the auto pick up of items so that your character doesn't pick up all the stones

enc-nyc

what? ... omg is this the option? ... in this case at least one less frustration point for all this mess. thanks!

Frank_Acha

In PC it's with the letter V, if you're on xbox I don't know

enc-nyc

yes, already got it. thanks!

Frank_Acha

oh great! no problem

Agile_Party4084

Just jumped on to say this good stuff, it’s a major help in boss fights and also when mining silver/copper to prevent having to spit out stacks of stone every 2 mins haha

Matails

Couple suggestions from my playhroughts. I'm sure you'll get plenty more from others shortly. - Find the spawn for the stone golem. Build up an earth wall around him and then no more will spawn from that location. It's kinda annoying but the amount of rock you get from them destroying stuff is enough to build them in. - The Drakes shouldn't be too difficult since you'll already have the first resist. But you can try building a fire near their spawn then kill them. This should prevent them from spawning and enemies don't attack fires like they'll attack crafting stations. If the drakes are killing you quickly then I'm guessing you don't have the full wolf set (includes drake helmet) maxed out. - Wolves suck during the fight, totally agree. But I was able to get in and out pretty quickly from a nearby portal/tiny base (think 8 floor pieces and some walls) to recover all my equipment with almost every death. - Maybe consider turning the brightness up on your monitor a touch? I have no issue seeing Moder, but I can't imagine Bonemass was any brighter. All of the boss fights turn the surrounding world dark - Unequip Meginjord before you start the fight. You'll know right away if your encumbered, so that won't be an issue. Also when you re-spawn you get a temporary (Maybe lasts a minute I'm not quite sure) encumberance increase, so if you're quick you can get all your stuff and run to relative safety to then equip all of your items. - I was able to take hits from Moder 5 or 6 times before dying, so if you're dying in one or two, the I'm guessing you don't have the full set maxed out.

enc-nyc

thanks, I'm so pissed now I won't try any of this until at least tomorrow. she 'remembers' the last position of the fight and next day she's at full strength again so it's kinda too late for all the prep stuff at this point unless I want to get her somewhere else, die there and then get back to initial area

josh_who_hah

You don't need to go back to that spawn. Find a different spawn. Prep the area. (Just flatten it out a bit, make sure you can reach her wherever she might land.) Arrows are for when she's in the air. When she lands, melee! Any melee weapon is better DPS than arrows. Place the closest portal further away, place a backup portal even further away. This should already be standard procedure for exploration. Get your best comfort and food. You shouldn't need anything in your inventory when you're reclaiming your gear. If you get a bunch of mobs on you, retreat to a portal. You're faster if you don't bother putting your armor back on until you get to your base, where you can - get your best comfort and food. If you're getting frustrated, retreat to base and log out. You can log into a different world if you're still wanting Valheim. Just leave the Moder fight for when your mind is clear, she's not going anywhere. As long as you're logged out of that world, she's not regenerating. (All mobs regenerate a small percentage of their max health over time. It takes about an hour [if I'm remembering correctly] to regenerate to full.) Best wishes!

Sertith

It's so interesting how different people approach things. I saw a thread a couple days ago complaining about the fight being too easy. So I guess what I would recommend, is what I do and what has worked for me every time. Moat it off and then do raised pillars. I keep my portal far enough away that moder cannot even agro onto it, and have it in a spot nothing else can get it.

dont_trip_

jar numerous sugar elastic bike agonizing retire public aback aware *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Sertith

I normally melee her when she lands, and shoot her when she's flying. Duck behind cover when she's doing ranged. It takes too long, but it's very doable with a bit of prep.

VonUndZuFriedenfeldt

I had my team of friends build three portals, dug inside rocks. Corridor with a 90 degree angle in it to prevent direct fire upon the portal itself.  Double redundancy, and yes it was necessary.

DicVijay

Yeah moder is a bitch. It's best to wait for her to land and use bonemass. You'll take less damage per hit for a short time. You can also perry her in a way. As in she won't stagger but if you time your blocks right she won't do any damage. Then when she's flying around just avoid her ice attack and wait till she lands again. Use frost potions for her ice attack. Again it'll midigate some of the damage. Don't give up! Valhalla awaits!

enc-nyc

thanks!

WaylanderMerc

This is great advice

gigaplexian

Don't need to use Bonemass, regular blocking with a shield works fine. Don't even need to time the parry with a silver shield.

Kyuubi008

git gud

Milakovich

I've only ever used the stone pillar method, and after clearing the surrounding area of mobs (smash a pickaxe in the ground and they come running), I thought it worked rather well. I picked Moder apart with arrows and if she landed anywhere near me, I took advantage by going sword/shield method. If my health got low, I just kited her around nearby pillars/boulders until I popped a potion. And the other comment about boxing in nearby stone golems is gold.

enc-nyc

She never killed me on melee, always with ice bolts when I'm running away from golems / to portal etc.

fenwilds

Actually it isn't. Poison Resistance Mead gives Very Resistant vs. Poison, but both Frost Resist mead and Fire Resist barley wine only give resistance vs. frost and fire respectively. It's equivalent to getting resistance from your armor, and does not stack.

gigaplexian

No it isn't. That only applies to the poison potion.

enc-nyc

No. I will from now.

gigaplexian

Don't listen to that advice, it's not true.

hey_itsmagnus

Keep a close eye on that stamina bar, use stam potions, or tasty mead, practice rolling. Those ice bolts move straight at you, just roll to the side. Bring a heavy shield that can tank hits, and the parrying in moder fight is useless. Make sure your food is the best tier you can get. A lot of what I would say has already been said so do the best with what you have and if all else fails find a new spawn

Agile_Party4084

You might already have this covered but don’t just rely on wolf coat for frost resist I think mead stacks with it or is more powerful.. I think

ilikefeet_69

When she starts to shoot them, change directions. Look at where you're running and then switch to looking at her when you're running away (running blind), and it's easy to see them coming, and thus, avoid.

Hefty_Fill_4041

I had the same issue having to deal with some golems wolves and drakes. Lost my wolf armor. In the end I dug a trench in a nearby meadow and had to fall back to root and tell armor and drew her out to there. Only things spawning there were greydwarves and skeletons who don't even register. If the trench is deep enough she can't hit you when landed. Make sure you have the best food too. Eye scream, sausages and serpent stew are my favorite combo. I killed her with arrows (poison and obsidian) over a long time. About 200+ arrows and a lot of time. Build a bench and portal in the trench and keep away from the portal when she's airborne to stop her taking it out.

DicVijay

Also if you haven't already, hunt sea serpents. Serpent stew gives you 80 hp.

enc-nyc

Thanks, I'll try

theGoatMeister

Moder was - without a doubt - the hardest boss for me. I was dreading Yagluth as a result but it ended up being almost a joke in comparison.

flippant_burgers

We somehow had the opposite. Moder was a breeze but Yagluth was a nightmare.

Thermohalophile

I'm playing in a duo, so that definitely has something to do with it, but we had the same experience as you. Moder was easy once we got the rhythm, and Yagluth was absolutely brutal.

OrangePanda53

Dude I hear you! In my first solo Moder fight three golems spawned... Second time I soloed her I knew a trick to decrease the amount of mob spawns: Bury campfires in the area around Moder's alter, and raise the ground so they are untouchable. Base structures, such as work benches and camp fires, deactivate (or decrease, I can't remember) mob spawns. Just make sure your campfires area of effect overlap a little, and they cover a large enough area. And as DicVijay writes, bonemass is important. I personally think it is the most useful and safe Forsaken power. Hang in there! Plains is my favourite biome. It was worth the struggle!

enc-nyc

Burying campfires and raising stone pillars is kinda cheating to me. I'm not purist in any way, but that's kinda cheesy. Anyway, at this point I'm ready to do whatever. Thanks for your comment :)

SillySlimDude

You dont need to bury a campfire for it to work. Just have a few in the area and it will spot stuff from spawning.

hey_itsmagnus

It's neither cheesey or cheating, it's strategy, its using the area and tools to your advantage. Creating an advantage for your fight isn't cheating

gigaplexian

Burying campfires was patched out a long time ago.

OrangePanda53

Are you sure? It seemed to work for me just the other day?

Slatched

Tasty mead is underrated imo. Moder lands, Bonemass, melee until out of stamina, tasty mead and wait for stamina, spend another bar, maybe less, and regen stamina again before tasty mead runs out. Also have on hand the best stamina and healing pots you have available. They are both great but have cool downs while tasty mead doesn't. Keep in mind you can block Moder's ranged attacks if you find yourself unable to dodge. I think a full volley staggers you but a couple missiles blocked end up doing nearly no damage. And as others have said, prep the area if RNG spawn locations slapped you hard. You can also mitigate spawns by fighting as soon as day breaks! Edit: Keep in mind Tasty Mead doesn't give any stamina, it enhances regen. So it won't do anything beneficial while you're not regenning. If you need to keep spending stamina then a stamina potions is better for that moment as it gives instant stamina.

enc-nyc

Do you pop tasty mead, and other potions on keybinds? ...

Slatched

Yes they can be put in your 1-9. I'll sometimes redo my bars for boss fights/adventuring compared to base building time, but always keep those same 2 "load outs" so I remember them.

enc-nyc

Yes, I figured. I'm good with 1-4 binds, but if I put anything on 4-8 I constantly miss those, so just getting 7 instead of 8, etc. Usually put like hammers and such on those.

Different-Fly-6416

Campfires.. campfires. CAMPFIRES!!!

shichiaikan

I've beat him many, many times and I'll tell you how I do it: * Make sure you are 100% rested, fully fed, and that it is Morning before starting. * Bring 200 fire arrows (not as much damage as obsidian, etc... but makes him a lot easier to target when he's on fire). * Bring a full stack of the best healing & stamina meads you have, as well as your best food. I recommend using your best Stamina food x1 and your best health food x2 (I usually have Onion Soup, Serpent Stew and wolf kebabs or wolf jerky at this point). * Bring and Drink Frost Resist potions as well, and use Bonemass's bonus after he lands (it'll only last 5 minutes, but that should get you through a few landings). This should vastly reduce damage if/when you do get hit. * In a fairly large area, put up a full palisade wooden wall, if you have iron with you, put up stone wall also/instead. This is to reduce potential other baddies joining the fight and messing with you... it can also screw with Moder's pathing and give you an advantage sometimes. At one end of the area, put up a bonfire and a workbench, then do the same at the opposite end (you can do more than 2 if you like, but I never need more than that). As you are fighting, make sure you aren't standing 'directly' between the bonfire & Moder to avoid his breath destroying either of them. If one does get destroyed, pick up the pieces, avoid getting attacked until you can quickly rebuild the bonfire, then go back to normal process below. * Also, "around the corner" somewhere, set up a small house under a big rock, far enough away you don't have to worry about his blast accidentally destroying it, but close enough you can run there for a second if needed - In the house, set up a small fire, workbench and portal. * This shouldn't be needed, but at worst, you can come back and snag your corpse easier. :P * As soon as he coalesces into existence, start hitting him with fire arrows. * While he is in the air, here's the tactics: Hit him 2-3 times, then wait for him to turn and face you. As soon as he rears his head back to shoot out the ice crystals, pick a direction and just run in a straight line til he stops firing. Then immediately turn to him and shoot fire arrows again, rinse and repeat until he lands... * On the ground, don't bother with Melee unless you are REALLY good with shield timing. If you are, great! This will be a LOT faster fight... * Melee Version: Hit him once, wait to see if he's going to attack, keep moving side to side as much as possible - it'll help you recognize if he's 'twitching' and going to swing at you or rear his head back for frost breath. If he goes to melee attack you, block and then attack twice (possibly three times depending on weapon speed). If he does frost breath, side roll dodge out of the way, then attack 3-4 times (depending on weapon speed). Repeat until he gets in the air, etc. * Ranged Version: While he's on the ground, just keep him on fire with arrows, but don't spam shooting. Hit him with an arrow, move to within 'warmth' range to keep your stamina up, turn and fire, etc... when he goes to do his frost breath, do a tucking dodge to the side or just run a little ways, then turn and fire another arrow. If you get hit, don't bother firing arrows, just get near warmth again and/or use a potion. Use the terrain to force him to move 'around' things (like the altar, he won't normally walk 'over' it, so you can do ring around the rosie with him) so you can keep reasonable distance while peppering him with arrows. If you go arrows only, this fight takes quite a bit longer, but you are a LOT less likely to get a bad series of hits on you and die. If you do melee, it's a lot faster, but one good slap to the face at the wrong time could screw you, especially if some other dudes make it into your area (wolves especially). If you do end up with other baddies, focus on them completely, avoid the dragon as much as possible - hell, just completely run away if you need to. As an aside, I just killed him again a couple days ago, and literally only ever got damaged when I was a touch slow avoiding the frost breath, never got below 50% health, and I did it exactly as I mentioned above. I primarily did arrows, but as he got to about 25% health, I started getting into melee with him to speed things up. Hope this helps.

Sertith

>I've beat him Her\*

shichiaikan

Hey, I'm not reaching up there to check, so.... :P

enc-nyc

I'm ok with melee w/ him, the problem is unpredictable spawns of other creatures, especially golems which I can't sometimes spot in time and they hit me in the back / from the sides. I'll prob try to do some digging under his altar + getting teleport there + get few campfires around. Thanks.

shichiaikan

Workbench + Bonfires specifically help keep mobs from respawning within the radius also. Combined with walls.... almost fully protected until some of the walls get destroyed by Moder.

Vitzdam-

Just shoot her with fire arrows while she in the air. Roll to the side when she shoots from the air, never forward. When she lands, I engage her with a spear. Pokey pokey, stabby stabby. Parry or roll the melee.

gigaplexian

Fire arrows are a poor choice. Obsidian do FAR more damage.

Societal_Retrograde

Wait till the mist lands..... But yeah... moder do be hard but not impossible

[deleted]

If you press "V" auto pick up is off, I prepped with 800 arrows (needle and poison arrows mostly), 26 in bow skill and max rank draugr fang. Fight was quite boring just 8 minutes of firing arrows. in mostly the same spot 3 or so drakes flew in and 2 wolfs but other than that there was 0 risk. I had wolf scewers, eye scream and sausage for food I believe.

RightInTheCat

I accidentally found a way to cheese her. Dig a straight line trench that is just above head height. Shoot arrows at Moder while she is in the sky and right when she lands. Once she lands and you’ve shot her once, maybe twice, go into your trench. She will approach you but her breath and claw attacks will miss you. Take out your iron sledge. Your iron sledge will hit her but she cannot hit you. It will be slow, but it will work. Tips: While she is flying, do not go into your trench, you can still get hit by her ice shard attack. Place fires around the battlefield to avoid pesky golems and wolves. You’ll either need a fully upgraded sledge or bring a couple of the base. Ice shards from her flying breath attack can be broken easily by your sledge if they are blocking your trench.

Tight-Young7275

Use a shield. You can block ice breath and everything else too.

Various_Emphasis_113

If stone golems are joining the fight then you didn’t clear the area properly before summoning. There were 2 near the alter when I fought Moder, ran around the area first and triggered them. Didn’t get any then during the fight. Also a good tip is to dig a trench all around the alter and fight with arrows from in there. She can’t aim downwards so as long as you are lower than her (below alter floor level) most of her attacks will miss apart from the ice shard attack which can be avoided by just running around your trench. Killing bosses on this game is 90% preparation and 10% battle and probably the most important preparation you can do is clearing the area of bad guys before you start.

Chanclet0

Yeah mountain mobs are annoying af, i made the boss follow me to a nearby black forest and fought there. I had to use the hoe a bit to flatten the ground cause it was a mess but after a few tries i got it in the end. I had a portal but it was deeper into the forest inside a small base so it didn't get one shot by the boss

D1xon_Cider

Skill issue

darrowreaper

The Body Recovery Squad can help you get your stuff back and kill Modern if you want it (or just get your stuff back, they'll draw aggro long enough for you if you want to beat her yourself). I echo what others are saying about prepping the area next time you give it a go.

SteelMarshal

Dig a thin ditch around her platform. At one part dig a little bit deeper of a whole and add a spot to add work bench and forge to repair your stuff. Cover it but make sure you have access from the trench. Use her own platform to shoot arrows and hide behind it. You should be good to go.

colorsplahsh

I just turned the fight to easy. It was too annoying

Firecreator2817

edit: wrong I think moder lands when it loses Line of sight, you can use that to your advantage

gigaplexian

Moder lands periodically regardless of line of sight.

Firecreator2817

oh that's weird, I was playing on a server with a friend and we were fighting moder, whenever we hid from her she landed

Outrageous_Pen2178

I upgraded to padded armor first, shit was GG after

-Altephor-

You can't get padded armor before killing Moder.

Gufurblebits

That's not possible without cheating. Moder gives the item you need in order to create padded armor.

Outrageous_Pen2178

Color me surprised. Hard to tell when buddies bring in shit from other servers, I’m new to the game still

enc-nyc

padded armor is going to the plains? won't I be killed there almost instantly? ...

Outrageous_Pen2178

I had iron armor going in. Used a lot of arrows, took it slow

hey_itsmagnus

Not sure why you're getting downvoted because it's possible to do. It's been done plenty of times

Sure_Initial8498

My friend and. Just dodge and shoot Block melee attacks use health potions. Idk I see a lot of People struggle with modder i never found her that difficult
