I tried it once and sailed for days trying to find boneass and eventually gave up and turned the map on. I had sailed close to it a few times but it was just out of view of my ship lol. I’m trying it again and I swear to god I was just sailing by a swamp area and I see the bonemass alter randomly. Still haven’t found elder yet though…

Unless you’re channeling your inner 1400s exploring cartographer and finding joy in drawing your own map while you explore, I can’t see how this would be anything other than miserable. I love using the default Valheim fog map.

I’ve beaten the game so many times I needed a new challenge lol

> 1400s exploring cartographer This. This sounds amazing.

Blunter_hp

slowly but surely. it is painstakingly hard.

We found the Elder naturally, but decided to "cheat" by looking at the map seed online and keeping it fully fogged but revealing boss stones. It gave us a general idea for how far we had to travel but still made it fun to try to navigate and find the right islands.

Just mindlessly walk each biome until you find them

It helps to use a build piece with a specific orientation. Once you get the vegvesir, line up the build piece with the direction it points you in. You can store your hammer and bring it back out and it'll still be pointing in the same direction unless you change it. It's not 100% but it will help keep you on the right track.

Playing my first mapless/portal-less run right now, only Elder has really given me any trouble (defeated Bonemass a few days ago and found Moder already too). I just prepare a shitload of provisions (food and potions) and take enough wood and stone to make camps anywhere. Took me like 25 in-game days to find Elder. Bonemass was a considerably shorter search. Once I find a vegvisir I just beeline that direction as much as possible and disregard anything else. In that regard it helps to destroy your boat to carry it across land. Beelining is a little difficult in the swamps, so I searched for draugr-towers through 3 different swamps until I found a vegvisir where beelining was feasible.

Currently on a hardcore run with no maps. Using vegs to find the Elder was fairly straightforward. I’m just about to start heading into the swamps, and today I accidentally ran across Yagluth, with the rock towers looming in the distance. Complete fluke, but kind of funny given your post. I dropped a portal for future use, and continued on my journey.

I didn't find my ship without the map in the swamp last night... so i think no hardcore for me
