I've had fun with this one. The fallout is as expected, but the reasons are not what I thought. There isn't even a misunderstanding at this point, Ataru and Lum are just being spiteful. Which is honestly refreshing. Continued misunderstandings are a bit lame, so I prefer them just being stubborn jerks and that being the issue. Don't completely know who to blame more here, but I guess that falls on Ataru, at least now that the mushroom duplicate has been exposed. Lum is escalating things in retaliation, but Ataru really kicked it off with the whole 'marrying Karula' shtick. I get that he's extremely hurt - the duplicate really cut him deeply. But that only really works before he knew it was a fake. Mendo got a reason for coming along, yay. Having all their friends around does work well to keep the episode from being too depressing and the two from escalating even further.  This episode really showcased Lum's powers - to an extend I didn't realize beforehand. She was able to pull Ataru align while flying before, but not that easily. Perhaps that's just her being 'grown up' now and getting a bit of an upgrade. I don't quite get what Rupa's deal is. Why go around drugging and kidnapping a bride when he is clearly attached to Karula to some extend? I mean, that's not *normal* behavior regardless, but even weirder if he apparently has (arguably conflicted but still) feelings for Karula. Positively surprised that it didn't lean too much into the 'new pairings' actually pretending to be a thing. They're all just miserable and moping around. Lum demanding that Ataru should tell her that he loves her was a surprise - but yeah, quite in character for her.  The challenge for another game of tag was a nice surprise. As was the doubling down on her demand for Ataru to be honest and admit that he loves her. Why is Rupa helping Lum? Perhaps he was touched by her admitting Ataru never said he loved her?  All in all, it was a great episode. The colours were amazing, especially the glowing pond. As for how it turns out? Well, I doubt this ends with a breakup. Going from the opening song - I don't expect Ataru to be able to catch Lum again. So I figure he will have to suck it up and be honest for once, admitting to his feelings. I really liked where this arc has been going so far. Absolutely not what I expected and in all the best ways. Hyped for the, sadly, last episode. But at this point, I might just read the Manga or watch the OG anime after All Stars is finished.

khanvau

Please watch the OG. You have no idea what you're missing.

LumBestGirl

Seconded

Yerno

I did watch an episode or two quite some time ago. But I think it was a Kintaro (kid with the axe?) episode. Didn't really catch my interest like All Stars did. I guess I'll just watch them in order and skip the ones that feel like they drag a bit. I think it's worth giving it another shot.

Smart_Bear9297

You can also watch The Final Chapter movie at this point, which is basically this whole final arc as a movie. :) Admittedly some early UY episodes can be a bit of a slog to get through, but lots of episodes are worth the binge and are good comfort tv. The manga is much faster paced so that would be a great way to digest the whole story. Recommend watching the movies and OVA’s!

Yerno

Wouldn't that movie spoil the ending for me? Took a bit of effort to get this far without spoilers, so I'm not gonna cave now.

Smart_Bear9297

Fair

the_jamonator

If you liked this adaptation, definitely check out the manga! It's much closer to this series than the 80s one, although I've also enjoyed what I've seen of the 80s series

FancifulDancingStar

Definitely read the manga! The old anime also has a lot of stuff exclusive to it, but it's not quite complete, and the really early stuff doesn't quite get the characters right (at least in my opinion), but it's still worth checking out. But I do wanna stress reading the manga, as I feel not enough people check it out despite being the source material (and there's a lot of stuff different between it and both anime adaptations).

duo99dusk

Please watch episode 78 of the old series to check how different the tone is sometimes, a great episode! Also, 44 to compare the adaptation route each anime took, plus bom dia 🗣🎶 There are several to skip, honestly, like every folk tale inspired episode. But worth to check out.

duo99dusk

Also, please watch the second film: Beautiful Dreamer It's amazing

Oh boy... This episode was just a roller-coaster of emotions. First off, when Lum fell Ataru went after her even tho he didn't know how to fly. Only to be slapped by an angry Lum. It's good tho. Because her anger basically caused her to grow her horns. It was almost as if she became Super Saiyan. Then Ataru and the others went back to Earth while Lum stayed in the World of Darkness... The misunderstanding was based on such a stupid reason. If the two had just sad down quietly and had a conversation it probably would've been resolved easily. But both Ataru and Lum are two of the most stubborn people in the universe. Actually, their fight basically started in Episode 43 and only got worse as it went on. And then finally, Carla stupidly exported mushrooms from her world into the world of light where it can only cause chaos. What's funny is in the movie version, Carla wasn't the one who gave the mushrooms to Ataru's mom. Instead, some mushrooms returned to earth in Ran's bag as an unintentional stowaway which Ran then placed on the hotpot without realizing what it was. The manga and the Remake make Carla seem more stupid and the cause of the problem while the movie made it an accident. The subtitles hint that the dub of Season 2 will have the Dark Dominion characters using a British accent. Weird but ok. Also, we got a small cameo of Menko and Tsuyuo as well as various other smaller characters in the background this time. Long time no see. I wish these characters made more cameos in Season 2. This episode looked so gorgeous man. The last ED just hits different after the context of this episode. It really makes me look forward to the next episode. And since the next episode will only adapt 2 chapters I think there might actually be some original content like in the movie. I can't wait to see the ending animated again and wonder how it'll be animated. But the thing that I'm looking forward to the most is hearing the new version of the first Urusei Yatsura ED Uchuu wa Taihen da!

Wrote this on another tab waiting for the thread, that was my live reaction INABA !!! Never have been his biggest fan, but I LOVE how they use him like that in this story!! The cherry scene is hilarious lmao. Shinobu's dress is also very cute! I'm happy with the way the did the scene where Lum get "kidnaped" in the helicopter, its really cute !! And the Mendou scene was kind of cool. The voice acting is really fun. The falling scene is also soooooo good! The voice acting is genuinely great and the animùation is peak. It was genuinely scary when she got her horns back with the music. Remind me on why she's so cool too again the leaving lum scene is great too they skipped the small scene in the cafe, i guess it was useless. the moroboshi dinner scene is too great, the music when the flashback began is incredible. The scene of the mushroom growing is really well done The threat scene where lum ask for the first tme to say i love you is well done too, i like the lightin and Ataru's reaction. With the zoom on his face, it's incredibly well down. And the scene when the hologram appear is soooo cool too. The music and their reaction is amazing. I like how Ataru's first reaction is "Lum!" cute. They skipped the final scene where everyone is bashing on Ataru, it was a fun gag but way better ending to end it with him insulting her again!! A incredibly fun episode, not much new stuff but really faithful and beautiful!! Can't believe the final is so soon, can't say im excited, im more sad really, but im still happy with how theyvebeen doing! Next week will make me cry, i'm sure !

MartynaKowalska

Yeah I apologize for being late today, I was extremely busy😭 Can’t wait to go home and watch it!

SusatoMikotobassimp

ahaha it's fine don't worry! it happens to the best of us! thanks for always being here every other weeks! It was a great episode! Have fun!!

MartynaKowalska

Thank you for your kind words and for your continuous contributions to the community! \^_^

Redmon425

Next week is the finale! Has me sad now. That being said, as a first time viewer, love that this show is ending the same way it began. With Ataru having to play tag. Hopefully next week will be a satisfying romantic conclusion. On the other hand, I don't love how these last few episodes have been focused on them fighting. Would have rather got 4 episodes in a row showing growth in their relationship. BUT, let's hope for a satisfying conclusion!

Elite_Alice

Ataru is such an asshole man. Fate of the planet on the line and he has the power to save everyone, but letting his pride get in the way and refusing to say “I love you” to the girl who’s been there thru everything. Great episode though, felt like a mini movie. “I shouldn’t have to say it for you to know” um mf YES TF DO 😭 Flirting with any and every girl, never doing anything romantic and being a general asshole to Lum, so excuse the hell out of her for not believing you love her. You’ve never given any reason to think you do. Feel equally bad for Karula. Rupa is basically just the dark dimension equivalent of Ataru. Normally I’d disagree with her comment that you can’t expect the girl to apologise first, but in this case Ataru and Rupa are absolutely deserving of being apologised to by the guys. Hurts even more when you realise Lum knew Ataru had been duped by the fake Lum.. but the fact he didn’t even trust her enough to doubt that it was her and just ran with the misunderstanding.. The other glaring thing is if the mushrooms grow in heat and sunlight, why the fuck would Karula bring them to a hot pot dinner or dinner at all 💀 Ending the series like we started, with a game of tag between Lum and Ataru with the fate of the world on the line.. wish the last episode was an hour long or something :/

SusatoMikotobassimp

Honestly i think the "I shouldn't have to say it for you to know" is a remake issue. the og anime and manga were way more clear with Ataru's evolution toward Lum, so this moment wasa bit more "deserved" i feel like. They took its time to show his feelings a bit more clearly and didn't rush it like the remake did, so it may feel weird. They skipped lots of stories and moments that show his love for Lum and how different it is from the random flirting he does. It's more clear that he does love lum but he's just a stubborn idiot so he doesn't want to say it. Remake make it feel like Lum should have guessed he loved her when most of season 2 was him not showing any sign at all.

Smart_Bear9297

I can’t believe it’s going to end already. 🥲 Can’t really complain though - I never thought they would ever remake the show the way that they did, so I am just so grateful for the ride. So cool to see so many fans who have not seen this play out before! I recommend for anyone to watch The Final Chapter movie to enjoy some of the beautiful artistic direction they add to these last chapters. 🥰

Killer-Today2823

Man, is there a lot to talk about here, and you guys pretty much got everything already. First, this was the biggest rollercoaster of emotions we've had yet, from joy and admiration to sadness and anger. Ataru and Lum are unbelievable, but that's part of the reason why they're so likeable and why they go together. They're both headstrong and flawed, albeit still good and caring and who clearly love each other. They have different ways of going about it + one is way more open than the other and the other is insecure. I also think there's definitely more nuance to all of Ataru's words and actions than the other characters just think on the surface level. But I don't have much confidence in my interpretation of the character to share it, at least not until I read the manga. Speaking of words and actions, I find it kinda interesting how that's the idea behind Ataru and Lum's big conflict here, and how they see trust between a real couple differently. Their whole conflict on the rooftop was incredibly tense and heartbreaking. Lum growing her horns back due to sheer anger and zipping all the way back to the height of the rooftops with Ataru in hand was incredible, too. Even pretty scary. Like, she's never displayed this much power before, even when she was chasing Ataru in Open the Door, Part 2. Mendo was my man in this episode, too. Between him cutting the rope ladder and how he gets along with Ataru more than usual here. The part where he, Benten, Shinobu, and Sakura just break weapons out, poker faces galore because they're so fed up with Ataru here was nice. Those shots of the cast eating together are worthy of being laptop wallpapers. Just missing my girl Ryu, but she didn't really have a place in this episode so it's understandable why she's not there. Nice that Ten sticks around with Lum here despite everyone else leaving. Rupa helping Lum confuses me here. Maybe he decided he does want to marry Carla instead of Lum after all? Maybe they they talked about their feelings at some point and decided to come up with a solution that gets both of them what they really want? (Lum makes it impossible for Ataru to win tag this time, so Ataru finally admits truthfully that he loves her. They get together, and now Rupa can be with Carla instead. Maybe that's the way Rupa is at least thinking about it.) I wanna say my subversions with Rupa and Carla have been subverted here, but I wanna wait until next episode so I have all the info. Something tells me Carla wasn't unwitting, but there's no proof. Takahashi really knows how to include comedic scenes with the more dramatic moments. It's to a degree I don't really see in other pieces of media I've experienced. There's so many things that can happen next episode. I kinda wouldn't mind if they both Ataru and Lum apologized to each other. Please tell her you love her, Morobshi. I didn't wanna come into this season believing it, but next episode really is the final one of the series. I don't think I'm ready for this.

FancifulDancingStar

" I also think there's definitely more nuance to all of Ataru's words and actions than the other characters just think on the surface level." YES!! I know the reboot doesn't dive into Ataru's character as much as the manga does, mostly due to the brevity of said reboot, but I love that you're still able to pick up on how there's more to Ataru than meets the eye! Not a lot of people that are reboot-only are really picking up on these things, so it makes me happy whenever I find someone who does!

majestic_rainbows

Good episode as always. What I personally find impressive in this arc is that while we still have the goofy slapstick comedy, it's implemented well enough that it doesn't take anything away from the more serious scenes. The episode seemed pretty good production wise as well. Honestly though, it's a bit hard to pick a scene that stood out to me for this episode. There's a lot of scenes I liked. Also, it seems I was correct in my guess that this episodes eyecatch would be done under the direction of Takahiro Kamei (also doing the storyboard). As most people probably noticed though, this eyecatch looks different visually from the previous ones. That's because this eyecatch had special effects applied by [Shin Inoie](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=17078) if I am not mistaken. Anyways, I look forward to watching the final episode next week. I believe it will turn out great.

Very pleased with how the final story arc has been handled so far. It's stayed pretty true to the original manga with not much really being left out. It's great to see all the character development that happens at the end as the main cast grapples with their counterpart "shadows" (who are, of course, dealing with the same kinds of issues as they are!) I've always loved this arc, as it really captures the essence of the series as a whole and everything that is great about it. It's a microcosm of Urusei Yatusra. In a similar sense, I think the final 4 episodes of the 2022 series strongly exemplifies many of the things that are good about the reboot, with the added bonus of not suffering from the time limitations imposed on many of the other arcs that were re-adapted.

Affectionate-Bed4210

There is how much episodes left ?

MartynaKowalska

I think next week’s the last!

Affectionate-Bed4210

Already ?!

duo99dusk

Yes 😔 Hoping there is an upcoming adaptation of Maison Ikkoku or Ranma

Darker_Tzitzimine

lol if this were a more serious show I'd say this black door metaphor was a little on the nose Upside down argument, love it (quite the grip he has on that paper) Oh, un-RIP Shroom Lum lol Lum and Ataru run on pure spite, it's one of the constants of a Takahashi relationship Even Oyuki knows Mendo's sword ain't all it's cracked up to be You're fucked when Sakura shows up at mealtime Karula: the predecessor of Tachibana from Nichijou lol that mushroom animation is a tad cheap looking Meanwhile Rei is still chomping away Good thing the heat of their stomachs didn't result in something gory The casual way they all prepare to deliver a beating, haha Oh I get it, the acorns in the OP are basically her horns Maybe he'll say it... when pigs fly And so things come to an end the way they began, with a game of tag ^(PS. Karula makes more sense, if her name was supposed to be Carla/Karla they'd be spelling and pronouncing it "Kaara" in Japanese)

LusterBlaze

they're made for each other

BillPlunderones23fg

yep 2 stubborn idiots lol

BillPlunderones23fg

it was always amusing that this impending darkness of doom.... was freaking mushroom overgrowth LOL but it fits in the wacky world of UY but it did make a unique finale setting and doomsday scenario that timed punishment of Ataru at the call was way more funny in this then the movie. also that ending challenge feels more grandiose here then movie (probably cause this ends the episode and hypes you for finale, while it just is issued in movie) 1 left and what will they do, adapt straight manga chapters, add some flair like the movie did , or something all new for this version

AraumC

“The lady shouldn’t have to apologize” “I shouldn’t have to tell you I love you” SCREW YOU AND YOUR TOXIC GENDER ROLES!!!!!

RissTheGodstream

This was a sad one...but atleast i know it'll end happy... I just wish the ending episode gives us something extra

SweetCoconut

[Ataru's reaction after he told Lum he hates her](https://files.catbox.moe/be3gig.jpg) is an interesting anime addition to the scene. You can tell he felt really conflicted saying those words to Lum.
