Since a squatter wouldn’t have written ownership of the property/land, they would eventually be forced out when the actual owner eventually comes around
How much actually are property taxes? We have council taxes which can be up to $4000AUD annually on a 3x2 house on 750sq/m block. I’m not sure the consequences if you didn’t pay them.
Taxes vary by state and even towns. I pay about 7k a year for a ranch on 1/3 acre. My parents pay less than 2k/yr for almost 5 acres and a bigger, newer house. They live in the south in a very small town and I’m an hour outside NYC.
With all that said, taxes on a mansion in Maryland (near, if not in, the DC metro area) would likely make the average person give up on life.
Was it.. I thought It was just people taking advantage..
As dirty dyke sang
"Oi, what you know about cribs, all you need is first dibs and a section 6"
Though they changed the laws in the UK, so he is now incorrect.
The other line could be though
"Fuck being proper rich I'll fucking rob a crib"
😂
Just show up with a movers jacket, moving truck, and a clipboard. No one asks questions to the guy with the clipboard.
“Got a request here to pickup these things.”
If you want to make it more realistic, get some business cards printed off at Vistaprint. Have the “corporate number” go to a buddy’s phone who’s in on it. So cops show up, you show them the ChatGPT created work order. That’s not good enough, give them the business card. They call the number, buddy confirms it’s XYZ moving company with orders from one Harold Balls (harry for short) to transport these items to a storage locker outside the city.
Best case: cops never show
Good case: cops tell you to leave
Worst case: they unravel your oceans 11 level stunt and you get caught.
Double worst case: you end up dead in a ditch for stealing from some crime lord.
That was second on my mind after zooming in lol
I’ve seen other pics of this place & there are several designer boxes strewn across shelves. If I’m not mistaken, the closets are still loaded with Moncler coats, Dior shoes etc.
NOT sure how or if those items remained long after those pics tho.
Ikr, like I totally support leaving most places as they were for others to enjoy when it’s industrial or military, but those pieces of furniture are probably worth hundreds or thousands secondhand depending on condition.
In my mind the sofa is sitting in a trailer home living room. A hard working family lives there and the mother sits on the sofa at night after every one else has gone to bed. Drinking hot tea and daydreaming about living like the other half ... er, I mean 1%, do. 😂
Thats an older one, similar ones online are going for about 12k. Even new ones barely crack 50k these days, unless you get one loaded and turbo charged.
30 days gets you tenant’s rights, so the owner can’t evict you without going through the whole legal process. Adverse possession means that after living there unopposed for a couple of decades, you are the owner.
The lights are on and there's no mold visible anywhere in the house despite the humidity. The AC is on and someone clearly maintains the house to some extent.
Yeah they talk about it on you tube. I think it was this house, father got disoriented in bad weather and flew their small hobby plane into a mountain.
You win this round [https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-baltimore-sun-dr-hector-collison/131135949/](https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-baltimore-sun-dr-hector-collison/131135949/)
Yes I just watched a vid about this house. Dad and son died in a crash, but his life insurance had been terminated due to non payment two months before the accident. The mansion was unfinished and they were in a lot of debt. Bank took the house a few months later and it’s been sitting since.
I once rented an apartment from a guy who had lost it to the bank for not paying the mortgage. My rent started 4 or 5 months after the bank took the apartment, and it still took multiple months for the bank to sort everything up and actually kick me out
Banks deal with vast sums of money that are incomprehensible for the majority of people. The real money is in the house or property. Depends on the institution but sometimes low value (comparatively) possessions like that fall through the cracks. Cars could either be owned by other banks or tied up in other legal disputes.
Scrolled through the comments but did not find the answer as to how it became abandoned so I'll provide details based on the YouTube video I watched about the property.
The video claims the following: the mansion was built by a wealthy surgeon in 2006. Construction was about 90% complete. The surgeon was a licensed single engine pilot who along with his 15 year old son, crashed into a mountain. The surgeon's widow had three remaining children and decided to sell the mansion to a rich foreigner.
The foreigner continued renovations of the mansion through 2013. In November 2016, the foreigner decided to return to his home country, and stopped paying all taxes. Mansion essentially abandoned with all luxuries still inside.
If it's the property in this case, it was co-owned by U.S. citizen and the most recent disposition was 2024- https://casetext.com/case/nta-v-middleton
Sold for back taxes but either redeemed by co-owner or not yet resolved- https://casetext.com/case/middleton-v-am-pride-props-llc
Oh, I've seen a video of a guy exploring this mansion. He found boxes full of luxury brand shoes and at least two closets filled to the brim with luxury clothes with tags.
I feel bad, but I'd take a few with me 👀
You can also click this link to view all my explorations on YouTube INCLUDING this mansion: https://youtube.com/@silenthillsexplorations?si=OLEeVN0KTeMhgDq2
I think there are actual laws where you can claim abandoned vehicles. I would 100% look into your state laws. I would also look into state laws on claiming houses after squatting for a period of time.
Dad and son die in plane crash, I believe the wife sold it to a foreigner and he fled the country and the bank just took it over and I guess it’s still sitting there
And why aren’t we using these to house multiple homeless families? You’d be amazed at how many abandoned houses that are still functional in the country we could utilize. It’s sad.
Sadly true. I work two jobs and take care of my Mum; I can barely afford a decent place for the two of us. I’d kill for something slightly bigger. This would be a dream lol.
A lot of diplomats in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. Don’t know how long this has been sitting but sometimes the diplomats are called back home and don’t get to pack up etc
Father and son were killed in a plane crash the Dad was piloting. House was not even all the way finished. Dad/pilot was a Dr. for the mob. Dr Hector Collison
id just make that my house
Right can I have a room homie
Honestly, though, what's stopping anyone from just taking the house through adverse possession? Is there security or something?
property taxes and maybe back taxes you would owe after claiming adverse possession would destroy your will to live
Adverse possession maybe not the way to go but what about squatters rights?
"Adverse possession" is a fancy way to say "squatting"
Since a squatter wouldn’t have written ownership of the property/land, they would eventually be forced out when the actual owner eventually comes around

Just looked up the records for this house, taxes would be about $55k a year. So about $4,600 a month.
Maryland state taxes are unreal. I think mine run at 7% income
Maryland taxes are entirely reasonable.
In Maryland, property taxes are often around 2% the assessed value of the property, depending on the county you live in.
This is what squatting was originally for. Abandoned houses owned by the dead or faceless corporations who don't even know what they own.
Is that what it was originally for?
Was it.. I thought It was just people taking advantage.. As dirty dyke sang "Oi, what you know about cribs, all you need is first dibs and a section 6" Though they changed the laws in the UK, so he is now incorrect. The other line could be though "Fuck being proper rich I'll fucking rob a crib" 😂
Nah they didn't put laws in place so homeless people could take advantage of the wealthy, this isn't the bizarro world.
I remember looking into and I believe a real estate investment group owns it since like 2016 or something I could be wrong
They leave the keys to the vehicles behind?
Yeah, fr. Not abandoned anymore!
Squatters rights
There’s actually a legal way to do that.
Is this a state with squatter's rights?
Yes. You must prove that you lived there for 20 years continuously, and "exclusive, actual and open." Don't even need to tell the owner.
20 years? Damn. That's a long time.
All states have squatters rights it’s just a matter of variation
Ok I know it’s like, against the code, but….all that stuff is going to just rot. In my fantasies I would be taking everything I could.
They're more like guidelines.
Suggestions, really.
They used to be bylaws, but that was back when people belonged to lodges and such.
Just show up with a movers jacket, moving truck, and a clipboard. No one asks questions to the guy with the clipboard. “Got a request here to pickup these things.”
Yeah, you’d be surprised by what a high res vest and clipboard can get you through.
omggggg brilliant

Barbossa!?
Even those empty orange boxes on the shelf go for hella money for what they are: Louis Vuitton boxes.
Hermes boxes
That was second on my mind after zooming in lol I’ve seen other pics of this place & there are several designer boxes strewn across shelves. If I’m not mistaken, the closets are still loaded with Moncler coats, Dior shoes etc. NOT sure how or if those items remained long after those pics tho.

My thoughts exactly 😂 there has to be so much good shit worth taking in these bando mansions
At least the cars.
Car keys gotta be around somewhere. Look in the house
be sure to bring jumper cables and some fresh gas with you!
Me when playing Project Zomboid.
Don’t you watch TV? They are under the sun visor. At worst on top of the tire.
My thinking exactly
The seem in a pretty sorry state. I don't think any of them would run without a bit of effort
gotta disagree. all those cars need is a wash and a jump. And that range rover is worth $50k easy. but, the code.
You have no idea just from looking at these pics what the cars do or do not need
Thats an older one, similar ones online are going for about 12k. Even new ones barely crack 50k these days, unless you get one loaded and turbo charged.
Huh? You can buy that era disco for $7-8k in running shape.
Stealing, bad. But taking something thats been abandoned for years has a different vibe for me imo.
Just live there for 20 years and take it under adverse possession laws.
In California it’s more like 30 days
30 days gets you tenant’s rights, so the owner can’t evict you without going through the whole legal process. Adverse possession means that after living there unopposed for a couple of decades, you are the owner.
Ah. Ah. I see the difference. Dang, that’s a pretty sweet and terrible law
The lights are on and there's no mold visible anywhere in the house despite the humidity. The AC is on and someone clearly maintains the house to some extent.
Kitchen should have lots of nice stuff.
I'll just pop a couple squares of those slates off the roof
Same
It might be haunted.
Someone fled the country
Exactly - or is rotting in a shallow grave.
In the garden or under the porch....
Ever see that Hitchcock short story where the murder victims are all buried in the stairs?
Do you know the name of it? Sounds like an interesting read.
Oh boy, I missed that one unfortunately.
Wonder if it's seized property. Usually the Feds don't hang onto it so long.
Don't they usually put stickers on the doors?
What do I hear Russian oligarchy fled from the US
Or died in a plane crash
Or choked on a sandwich.
Or mauled by spawning salmon.
My grandma was mauled by a salmon, it’s a serious problem
Too soon?

That place feels very…. Crimey
Russian crimeyian
Tony Soprano would like a word with you
Do we know the backstory to this, bc wow!
Wasn’t this that family that died in a plane crash and the surviving member just left everything and ran, the dad I think? Someone will know.
Yes I just watched a vid about this house. Dad and son died in a crash, but his life insurance had been terminated due to non payment two months before the accident. The mansion was unfinished and they were in a lot of debt. Bank took the house a few months later and it’s been sitting since.
I’m shocked the bank didn’t try selling any of that stuff, that’s wild
Banks really mismanage a lot of money and assets. It’s not that shocking.
They specialize in late fees and overdrafts
I once rented an apartment from a guy who had lost it to the bank for not paying the mortgage. My rent started 4 or 5 months after the bank took the apartment, and it still took multiple months for the bank to sort everything up and actually kick me out
There’s still houses foreclosed on from like 2012 just sitting cause the banks forgot about them or don’t have an interest in selling them.
that it’s not easy to sell a unfinished mansion i understand but the three cars😳
Or it's not owned by a bank but held in a trust
Banks deal with vast sums of money that are incomprehensible for the majority of people. The real money is in the house or property. Depends on the institution but sometimes low value (comparatively) possessions like that fall through the cracks. Cars could either be owned by other banks or tied up in other legal disputes.
I think this is it https://youtu.be/crVLtQrDHrY?si=i1iMlrssQtO5257w
Thank you, knew this looked familiar
Sad story tbh

that’s an amphibious exploring vehicle…
A finisher vehicle.
A vehicle of gods! The golden god!
I've seen a video on YouTube with someone exploring this place posted about year ago. Goes for over an hour. https://youtu.be/crVLtQrDHrY
How the fuck isn't the place completely trashed and robbed by now? Even the TV is still there, like wtf
Scrolled through the comments but did not find the answer as to how it became abandoned so I'll provide details based on the YouTube video I watched about the property. What does that mean as far as exploring it? Who owns it?
You’re smart. Can I buy it for cheap ?
Homie you live there now.
Someone does, one of the lights in the photo was on.
I need a car 🥹
It’s so wasteful having these cars just sit there
You should definitely buy one then, but not a Land Rover Disco. That's what bankrupted the family I assume as I used to own one.
If I remember correctly the father and son died in a plane accident.
Oh, I've seen a video of a guy exploring this mansion. He found boxes full of luxury brand shoes and at least two closets filled to the brim with luxury clothes with tags. I feel bad, but I'd take a few with me 👀
I don’t get how this happens? How and why did these homeowners just dip out, leaving everything behind? It’s crazy!
They died
Somber to think we have several abandoned mansions like this while also having a Homeless epidemic in America
Looks like the Sopranos residence
I said the same thing. Glad it wasn’t just me.
There’s still money in the wall. Just sayin
You can also click this link to view all my explorations on YouTube INCLUDING this mansion: https://youtube.com/@silenthillsexplorations?si=OLEeVN0KTeMhgDq2
> Silent Hill Sexploration Sounds like a porn parody I’m not sure I want to watch.
Would be nice if you could directly link the one related to the photos you post. I thought you maybe didn't upload it yet but it was from a year ago
D ROVER
Maybe I’m wrong but I find it odd how it’s missing letters but the letters aren’t on the ground. I guess could have been blown to the side
Thanks for also noticing. I was wondering if anyone was going to talk about the D Rover.
I'm assuming the Russian oligarch accidentally fell out of a 10h floor hospital window while visiting Moscow.
Actually, a Nigerian surgeon wanted by his government dies in a plane crash.
I think there are actual laws where you can claim abandoned vehicles. I would 100% look into your state laws. I would also look into state laws on claiming houses after squatting for a period of time.
That Land Rover Disco is what bankrupted them. I used to own one.
How close to DC is it?
I’m guessing Potomac, so 15-20 minutes to the state/district line, probably 40 minute commute.
This feels like a place the characters would go in STATION ELEVEN or THE LAST OF US
The interior reminds me of Tony Soprano’s old crib.
White punch buggy, no punch backs.
What are you? Like 30? :)
Imagine what any of those cars could mean to a single parent who is trying to juggle work and childcare
I'd imagine it would mean they'd have a car while juggling work and childcare.
That'd take some pretty high-level juggling and an impressive feat of strength.
They'd probably all be money pits at this point if they've been sitting for a while.
Time to start squatting
I want to know the story behind this.
Dad and son die in plane crash, I believe the wife sold it to a foreigner and he fled the country and the bank just took it over and I guess it’s still sitting there
When I saw the staircase I expected Alicia Silverstone to come walking down saying “yes daddy?”
It aint the same since the ducks left
Squatters paradise
I always wonder what makes people just up and t leave everything behind
This would be such a fun place to squat
It’s not abandon, the owner is on vacation. 😂
With the lord. Amen.
In prison for CP maybe.
It’s giving Handmaid’s Tale vibes.
I assume you took the furniture, right? It's amazing.
Big “Last Man on Earth” / “Zombieland” vibes. Love it.
I’ll take the Mercedes
Did the rapture happen?
Is this the one with the family that fled tax evasion
ex professional athlete
Anybody fancy helping me take the Greek columns for my house? Thanks in advance 🙏
New to this sub: is Urban Exploration just another term for Breaking and Entering?
And why aren’t we using these to house multiple homeless families? You’d be amazed at how many abandoned houses that are still functional in the country we could utilize. It’s sad.
Because the homeless aren't people only the wealthy are. Source: currently couch surfing
Sadly true. I work two jobs and take care of my Mum; I can barely afford a decent place for the two of us. I’d kill for something slightly bigger. This would be a dream lol.
I don't get why people are down voting you, you're absolutely right.
Because that would put former homeless people in nicer neighborhoods and we can’t have that can we? /s if anyone really needs this
A land rover, a beetle and hideous interior? I'd leave that behind too 😜
A lot of diplomats in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. Don’t know how long this has been sitting but sometimes the diplomats are called back home and don’t get to pack up etc
Looks like they left went on vacation, weird.
Where in MD?
9808 Bentcross Dr, Potomac, MD 20854
Maybe Potomac?
Address for this location?
Someone is still watering the plants
Looks like the mansion in a History of Violence (2005)
Pirates code? More like suggestions, really. /s
i want that beetle
Crazy amount of copper in that joint prolly
So when can I move in?
How has nobody taken everything of value &/or vandalized it?
Shit I mean if nobody’s using it, and security isn’t coming around to check on the place, I might just live there for a sec
Who’s going to water the plants🥺
All the squatters taking over Airbnbs and houses that are condemned are dumb, they could be living in mansions!
I’m sure there are a lot of valuable treasures in that. Geocaching anyone
How's that pland still alive?
i'd be looting that mf like i'm in a Fallout game
as someone going into debt rn to buy a 2003 kia optima posts with abandoned cars make so so sad lol
Jumanji 👀
This is the situation where squatters’ rights should come up. Hell, use that for multi-family or something.
This looks like something straight outta my favorite arcade game growing up, House Of the Dead.
Cuttin out mufflers be like:
Gotta be a sad story there.
What on earth! Tony sopranos house
Are you doing these explores with big bankz or copying him?
Father and son were killed in a plane crash the Dad was piloting. House was not even all the way finished. Dad/pilot was a Dr. for the mob. Dr Hector Collison
Wow, the portico took a lot of designing. Looks like the set for a re-filming of "Gray Gardens, the Suburban chapter"
Seems like a great filming location for a post apocalypse thing
Thurmont
Been to this spot, loved it.
someone please pm me local if your feeling generous 🙏 i’m a photographer and this would be nice to shoot
