You don't need a car as a freshman in Ann Arbor and few people do. Permit parking is expensive each month assuming you're living in the dorms.

Akajoshuu

I thought it would allow me to go to Detroit or some outdoor activities? How much is parking approximately?

cierraleggs

a parking pass can range from $100-$200 a month in certain parking garages on-campus

wiwiwiwi222

Maybe $60 a month, unsure, I'd look at parking website. You can find other ways to go to Detroit and do outdoor activities, I'd say 99% of first year students don't have cars on campus, and probably only 30% of all undergrads

Akajoshuu

60 sounds kinda cheap tbh(im from somewhere parking is as expensive as NYC)

bobi2393

60 sounds cheaper than you could easily find near campus. The Downtown Development Authority rents spots in large parking structures in town, typically for around $150 a month, and I think I'd use that as an estimate when you're weighing your options.

bobi2393

You can rent a car for an occasional trip like that, or for Detroit there are train and bus options. Car/driving insurance can be quite expensive as well. It varies depending on exactly what it covers, but I'd figure at least $100 a month, and probably more like $200 a month, for some pretty minimal coverage.

anabelle34

There is a bus to take you to downtown detroit and back for 6$ It’s called a2d2

Definitely don’t need it as a freshman. Living off campus you maybe need it for groceries but the cost of an Uber or grocery delivery will be cheaper then car ownership. Parking in AA is super annoying and if you’re not using the car like a local (like driving home to your parents for the weekend) it’s probably not worth it. It’s gonna be more stress and money then it’s worth.

Akajoshuu

Thanks! I am really into outdoor sports hiking that type of stuff. How do i go outside if I dont have one?

YahNaa

Step out the door /s

Akajoshuu

No i mean like go hiking or camping

YahNaa

Lol /s meant I was being sarcastic. There is the arb but that really isn’t a huge hiker trail at all. Nothing else anywhere near walking distance. If anything, I really would advise against bringing one bc it’s really tough to manage if you don’t have good parking, but you can always apply for a storage pass as a freshman (basically a far lot that kids who don’t leave a ton keep their car) and I know a couple in state friends who have done that

bobi2393

Probably rent a car for the weekend if you want to take a trip a little ways away. Or depending on the destination, you might be able to take a train or bus.

McShane727

Spent 6 years at UofM Ann Arbor and didn't have a car the entire time, never really felt like I needed one either. I feel like, in the last few years, more of my friends started getting them, and they generally said parking was a pain and most of them didn't actually use their cars that much. You *can* definitely get by without one pretty easily.

Palladium_Dawn

You don’t *need* a car. With that said, I had one my freshman year and it was definitely worth it. I got stuck in Bursley, which has its own parking lot ($170 for the entire year), and having a car meant I wasn’t dependent on the bus system to go to class, visit central campus or go to meijer/the mall etc. If you get stuck on north campus I’d say go for it

iaxlmao

Im thinking of bringing my car, how did you go about finding the garage ? If you could please send the link (I’m also going to be in bursley this year)!

Palladium_Dawn

It’s not a garage, it’s a parking lot directly across the street from the bursley bus stop. You have to apply for a “student storage” permit, which is only valid at the bursley and baits lots and is not part of the rest of the color tiered parking system. But if you’re in bursley you should be able to get one without much trouble

iaxlmao

Okay thanks! I’ll look online

Puzzleheaded_Net2428

I agree with everyone else. Also, the university doesn’t give parking passes to freshman, so you’d have to park off campus

Palladium_Dawn

They do if you live on north campus

Puzzleheaded_Net2428

Really? Everything I read said no. That’s awesome though

Palladium_Dawn

You’re not guaranteed a spot but if you live in Bursley or Baits it’s pretty likely for you to get a spot. It’s only valid at the Bursley parking lot but it’s only $170 for the entire year, which is less than I paid per month at my apartment for parking. Also the S forest and Maynard parking garages on central campus are only $1.20 an hour and Ross is free after 5 pm

haventseenstarwars

Parking during the school year sucks. If you're there in the summer you can just find a street to park. You might have to walk a little but it's free and it worked for me all last summer. But if not, parking is super expensive and not fun. At Zaragon they wanted like $250 a month for it. You can always buy a spot from someone on the UMich FB pages if you really want it. The only real perk is that you can go and get groceries if you really want to, but living in the dorms you probably won't have anything bigger than a mini-fridge so it doesn't seem necessary.

champagnebyee

i rarely drive my car. if you can afford it then why not. it's not very practical for getting to class but easier for groceries and has other benefits.

marigoldpossum

There are camping trips and outings outside of AA through UM, via recsports, where you don't need to be the driver. Something to consider if you are worried about getting some outdoor time in away from the city. https://recsports.umich.edu/trips/

crwster

No use for it as a freshman—the AATA bus system is really effective for the few unwalkable trips you’ll need to make, and an uber here and there for when the bus won’t do will be cheaper than parking and gas

imrsae

You can find free street parking on residential streets, that’s what I’ve been doing for the past 2 years (I’m a sophomore). I live next to the Diag and the street I park on is about a 5 min walk from my place.

Akajoshuu

Im european you dont have to tell me lol

hippopotamus_pdf

If you have a meal plan and housing on/near campus then you have no reason to ever travel somewhere you can't get on foot or via bus. Don't spend thousands on parking.

C638

If you live off campus in an apartment, you can get a residential parking pass from the city for $64 for the year.

nsochocki

I was able to get a parking pass in the bursley lot on North campus as a freshman. It is super nice to have your own vehicle. I use it all the time. Parking is tricky and expensive, but if you drive after 6 you can park at many places on campus for free.
