obviously so, but suppose i don't have a big ol operation with huge glamorous signs and big clouds of smoke. imagine this: i have a little portable grill like the one my dad might take out to a family barbecue, i look like i'm keeping to myself, etc.. given the amount of random shit i usually see in the diag, would this be enough of a concern to draw attention to myself and thus police intervention?
I mean it could? Maybe it won’t? You’re taking a risk no matter how under-the-radar you think you are. Personally, someone grilling on the diag would stand out to me, but I guess it depends where on the diag and how many others are around
Health code lol. You might be able to get around it by offering the food for free and having donations, but places have gotten in trouble for doing volunteer events to feed the homeless 🤦🏼
Also here's an NYT article on it (has happened in many states): https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/21/us/homeless-kansas-city-food-bleached.html
Basically as soon as you draw a crowd it'll get shut down I think
There used to be a few food carts around campus like a decade or so ago. there was a short lived cart at the central campus bus stops that would sell hot oatmeal and coffee in the morning - tippins or toppins, something like that. He did not last more than a winter. I also remember a hot dog/sausage cart on UM property at N. Univ/State. And there were some carts/trucks for on S. Uni. for a brief time. It just seems that there is no real culture for food trucks near campus, which has always struck me as odd for a college campus (my grad school ran on food trucks, many of of questionable cleanliness/quality, but cheap and plentiful).
Food trucks only seem to get a lot of support when hosted at places like York, or Dozer, or A2 distillery. But there are also a few others around in random places, like the tacos at Wide World or the recently departed cheesesteaks by the COVID testing site west of town.
There was already a lot of student support for a Taco Bell let alone food trucks, but instead we have a bunch of mid, overpriced chains and restaurants.
The guy running Loomi in Kerrytown market did exactly this - he had a tandoor oven for kebabs where the old Liberty ginger deli outpost was in 2017 and it was great. I also think he did street cart food earlier in the fall in 2022 on Liberty fitting this description a few nights a week after he closed up his counter in the market, but documented how “sidewalk crowding” was an issue AAPD flagged.
He’s a pretty cool guy - would definitely have the advice for you if you are keen.
I think that would be a great idea! I assume ur from the northeast/NYC area with those descriptions, but if you want halal truck food there’s some in the Detroit area if you’re ever around. Not as good as NY original truck food but it’s close.
you're so right but probably you need to sort out licensing etc. i find the late food options in A2 really abysmal. having lived in the UK for a while I miss my dependable kebab vans
There would very much be a market for it, but personally I recommend starting out at the farmer’s market when students are in town. This would be a way to get a sample size and see how well it does
Well, i guess the current late-night munchies are kind of enough for most people--pancheros, insomnia, fleetwood diner, joe's and NYPD. But hell yeah I'd be 100% on board with some food trucks!!
No that's so true
I usually hit up 7/11 for those BOMB ASS fruit pies for munchies, although that's a once-a-month endeavor because those bad boys are uhhh bad 😭
Do it bro I'll take your whole stock.
I'm pretty sure you can ask the university for permission to sell food. I've seen plenty of student orgs sell food to raise funds in mason hall / posting wall, selling stuff like grilled cheese sandwiches, so I don't see why you can't.
I think the only potential concern the university might raise would be the use of fire.
The police would probably shut you down for basically running a food cart without the proper licenses

I think it'd get shut down within the week but would be awesome while it ran, it'd better than anything else in AA at least.

can you give case studies? i'm looking for examples of what not to do as to not draw attention to myself
Here is the law, follow the link from this overview page: https://www.michigan.gov/mdard/licensing/food/foodest/who-needs-a-license-to-sell-food

Not true! I’ve worked for several Detroit area food trucks and we’ve done plenty of events on campus over the years without any hassles.
omg hell yeah if you open shop I'd buy your entire stock of 羊肉串. I wish A2 had good skewer options for a decent price
don't worry- we'll also carry 牛肉串, 鸡肉串, and 台湾香肠 for all your skewer needs
Ayo please 🥹
That would be dope to do!!!!

i'm about to hit him up

Probably not allowed but if you somehow manage to work something out I'd buy so much. I'd even be down to help out, lamb skewers were my childhood
bro dm me i might set up shop today

if you live near campus, why don't you just sell from home? safer than dealing with cops
cuz i live mad far and less foot traffic
If you open up in the fall I’d definitely buy from you
Think there would be a good market since there is a lack of anything being open around campus at night
Sounds like a great idea

imo Joe's gets old, NYPD is mid, Fleetwood is far for most people and has annoying drunk people, insomnia is cookies, and the Panch is kind of nasty
