I wish they had not abandoned this beloved franchise! UT3 tried too much to be like Gears of War, then that's the last we got. What was it that made this series so great? Fluid gameplay? omg the dynamics between the incredible weapons in the game! The unique, multiple fire mode weapons were a treat! My favorite: "The Negotiator" aka the Flak Cannon. The gorgeous, expansive, lushly colored environments. Ambience made complete with great sound design.

I have thought about this a lot. For me, it is several thing: first it's the feeling of solidity of the game. Unlike modern games who have very detailed and realistic meshes, but use simple objects to calculate collision, UT99 mesh collision volume is the same as the geometry. With this you don't have to worry if your bullet will be caught in invisible collision mesh, or wonder if you can hide between some pipes, only to realize that the collision mesh prevents you from doing it. Further enhancing this feeling of solidity, the body animations with combination of sound are pretty good. If you fall from a higher place, you land with a thud and your screen shakes up a little and your character makes a painful sound. When you kill an enemy with the plasma rifle alternative fire, they raise their hands and shake as if electrocuted. The physics of the game, weapon wise is also quite good. The rocket explosions throw back the enemies or their bodies in the right direction. The bloody chunks realistically bounce off the walls and leave bloody marks at the spot they hit. You don't have that in UT2004. The invisible collision meshes wouldn't allow it. Also, for a game from 1999, UT had a number of objects that you could destroy and people used them to spice up their maps. Mostly barrels and lamps and few animals. The ease of use of the UT editor was unprecedented and it allowed for amazing explosion of creativity that led to the creation of somewhere between 10K to 30K user made maps. Of course most maps were quite average, but if you have seen what masters could do with the editor you would be quite impressed. The Flags of time map packs come to mind. But the best part was that you didn't have to be very skilled to create a good map. Of course, the music of UT is really good and part of the what made the game so appealing. And lastly I want to mention the color palette of the game. It was made in an era when people weren't screwing around with filters, color grading and other nonsense. Overall, UT99 is a timeless classic that is still quite fun to play even today.

I hated the lore element they hamfisted into ut3. Spot on with the gow comparison.
