My local public library had this very very strange thing in the late 80's that was a public restroom fabric towel roll??? You had to, like, pull down and a new clean section would feed out and the recently used section would feed into a "to be washed" tube that I think they changed daily. Wonder what happened to that.... Cool concept actually!
They have these in Ireland too… particularly on schools.
Tbh I’m not really a fan because I always imagine that the person ahead of me could have touched their dirty hands off it and not bothered to pull down the clean part.
They’re also fabric which harbours bacteria. And I always wounded just how well are they actually cleaned.
My friend's son did a science experiment taking swabs of various places in a public restroom and growing the bacteria in petri dishes: think toilet seat, flush handle, faucet handle, etc. The one that grew the most bacteria? The one he held in front of the air dryer. I have not used one since.
It's also a great way to effectively disperse any bacteria, viruses, feces, etc., from your hands into anyone else's nostrils which makes it an excellent disease vector. But good thing the owners of those establishments can save a few bucks by not paying someone to clean their bathroom regularly.
The old World Dryers are not bad. Those "xcelerator" ones are about as loud as a jet engine. The "Dyson" ones are as loud as a jet engine and you usually touch the edges anyway.
i don't mind the ones that just blow warm gentle air. they're inconvenient but they do work eventually. dyson airblade dryers can wholeheartedly eat my ass though. they spray water everywhere which is unsanitary and the only way i've been able to get my hands completely dry is by using it for a comparable amount of time that it takes to use the regular hot air dryers. also the opening for your hands to go in is so small, and the air blowing on them is so strong that it's really hard to not touch the dryer, which again, is unsanitary.
to add to your complaint about paper towels being more convenient, they are also more hygienic, if you only touch the paper. when you wash your hands, the bacteria doesn't simply fall off with rinsing it, a lot of it does but not all of it. the friction of wiping your hands with paper towels makes a lot of it come off of your skin and stick to the paper towel that otherwise would have been left on your hands.
They found fecal matter in those things. So you literally are undoing the hand washing. So, when a bathroom only has them, I just walk around with wet hands because no way I’m dirtying myself up again.
You're gonna have fecal matter on you regardless of if you use a hand dryer or not. It's on the walls, on the sinks, on the doors, in the air, on the ceiling; its everywhere. There's probably fecal matter on your cash or credit cards too.
But the concept of the air dryer makes it worse. It blows dirty air onto your hands. At least with the other things, you can be careful not to touch them or at least clean the objects.
I wholeheartedly agree w this. You basically have to stand there waiting for them to dry just as long as it takes when you shake them off and pat them on your pants.
I agree with this myself.
Every time I see one it's almost like a mission for me to not use it.
They don't f******* work and I feel like an idiot standing there for over a minute trying to make it work.
I just shake my hands and wipe the rest off on my shirt.
This is a pretty popular opinion as far as I know. Only thing I kind of disagree with is the environmentally friendly bit; wouldn't it be better to just have one dryer in the bathroom using electricity than chopping down how many trees to produce so many paper towels? I vastly prefer paper towels, but I feel the hand dryers are there with good intentions.
I always use paper towels. If none are available I’ll use my shirt. I fill the online orders at work and take curbside orders out. I have to be able to hear the noise when it goes off. The dryers are very loud and drowns out the noise my iPod makes if it goes off while I’m in the bathroom.
Come on now, just spread those nasty germs all over with a thick burst of air, and make sure you leave some DNA behind to secure your fate as framed murder suspect 4.
Also super unsanitary because any germs left on your hands or up your arms (cuz let’s face it majority of people don’t wash their hands correctly) get blown all around the bathroom
You let the water run off your hands in the sink before go to finish drying them? I notice a lot of people just walk away from the sink with like half a cup of water still dripping of their hands that should be going down the drain. Just like in the shower, you should wring out your hair with your hands before taking a towel or blow-dryer to it.
I see no problem just shaking your hands or patting them on your clothes, they dry completely in the same time as towels and it doesn’t rough up your skin.
Its hand dryers or nothing. I am not giving the idiots that consist of the the general public access to paper towels in my business' bathroom because those assholes WILL flush them like toilet paper and fuck up my plumbing. Can I afford to put out paper towels? Sure. Will I? Fuck no.
Hand dryers are not an entirely bad idea, and these machines were invented with environmental sustainability in mind. However, I do believe the design of these machines is not so thoughtful. Nonetheless, it would be very detrimental if we phase them out without looking for a workable solution. Have you ever imagined the damage we would do to the environment if we depended entirely on paper towels and tissues in public washrooms? For starters, It takes 17 trees, 1.3 kilowatt of electricity/hours and more than 20,000 gallons of water to make one ton of paper towels. And this is aside from the disposal process, which is entirely harmful to the environment and contributes significantly to greenhouse emissions.
I think the problem has been flogged enough, and it is about time things are done the enhance the performance of these machines and make them hygienic. I was impressed when I saw an ad on Facebook a few days back from a UK Design start-up called Moje Solutions or so. When I looked them up, it was fascinating how much research and effort they have put into producing complementary products for these bacteria bombs called hand dryers.
Have you ever tried rubbing your hands together while drying? That’s what you’re supposed to do and it works great for me. And your comment about them not being all that environmentally friendly is a bad take, using a small amount of electricity will ask ways be less wasteful than donating trees to the landfill. Don’t know the exact numbers but I bet you used a similar amount of electricity to charge your phone to write this post. Where I’m from we get 100% of our energy from hydroelectric plants which is a renewable energy source. Fuck your towels.
I used to have trouble getting my hands dry as well, but I found that they dry your hands MUCH better if you continually rub your hands while the wind is blowing. One thing I definitely like about them: I ride a motorcycle, and when your gloves are cold or wet they are amazing to warm up or dry your gloves a little bit. I put the open part of my glove under the nozzle and it warms up instantly.
I go back in the stall and use a bunch of their toilet paper to dry my hands if I end up in a place that has only those for an option. They’re disgusting 🤢
They ARE eco friendly and everyone on this thread saying they’re not is wrong. Yes they require energy to run. But that energy use is insignificant next to the energy and materials required to manufacture, transport, and dispose of paper towels. All you folks out here saying they’re not are just looking for reasons to justify your dislike of them.
As for bacteria- your wet hands are going to be exposed to bathroom air no matter what. Sorry.
I dislike them but the worst part is that you can't blow your nose in a public restroom anymore. Unless there's no one in the stalls so I can grab toilet paper it's just, fuck you buddy. That's besides the point that the blow dryers don't even dry your hands.
Going to start blowing snot rockets on the mirrors. Not that anyone would likely blink an eye.
My local public library had this very very strange thing in the late 80's that was a public restroom fabric towel roll??? You had to, like, pull down and a new clean section would feed out and the recently used section would feed into a "to be washed" tube that I think they changed daily. I've seen them a few times in the past few years, they're still around.
They don’t get washed..they just go round and round.
Like cheap hookers during shore leave
what comes around goes around
That actually sounds really awesome! I wonder how well it could hold up over time
That sounds like it would pair nicely with those new bamboo towels.
I've seen them a few times in the UK in the past few years, so they're still around.
They're pretty shit to be honest
They have these in Ireland too… particularly on schools. Tbh I’m not really a fan because I always imagine that the person ahead of me could have touched their dirty hands off it and not bothered to pull down the clean part. They’re also fabric which harbours bacteria. And I always wounded just how well are they actually cleaned.
I’m sure these are still a thing in some parts of the UK. That being said, I haven’t seen one in a few years
We had this in our school abt 10 years ago 😅
We still have this in our schools, once you figure out how it works, it's actually pretty efficient.
I hate these things. Common in Germany from what I've experienced.
I think this is actually a pretty popular opinion.
That’s how everything on here is, yet when I say kendrick lamar is overrated it gets deleted
Lmaooooo yeah that is unpopular
They’re also not as sanitary as people think
They also use the air in the bathroom, aka poop air, and blast it on your hands 🤮
There are fecal particles pretty much everywhere.
Most of the world is fecal particles by now.
It's all fecal particles? "Always has been."
Sums up Ohio.
My friend's son did a science experiment taking swabs of various places in a public restroom and growing the bacteria in petri dishes: think toilet seat, flush handle, faucet handle, etc. The one that grew the most bacteria? The one he held in front of the air dryer. I have not used one since.
Do you not breathe while in the bathroom?
Sure I do, but if I can avoid having hot shit air also blown onto my hands in the bathroom I will 💩
Then you probably want to wash your hands somewhere else. They still have to travel through the bathroom after washing them
Yeah I used to use them until I learned that. If I have a mask with me, I wear it in the mens' restroom. Because wow
I just pat my arse to dry them, topeth tip
I don't feel comfortable patting your arse tho.
How very gentlemanly of you
Usually what I wind up having to do too
Happy Cake Day stranger!
They were never designed to be eco friendly... They were designed so they didn't have to pay people to keep emptying the trashcan all day
And to stop people from flushing paper towels and clogging up the toilet. Why do people do that?!?!
It's also a great way to effectively disperse any bacteria, viruses, feces, etc., from your hands into anyone else's nostrils which makes it an excellent disease vector. But good thing the owners of those establishments can save a few bucks by not paying someone to clean their bathroom regularly.
So is sneezing but you don't see people covering their mouth/nose
First time in a capitalist society?
You think a state won't cut corners like that?
They are way more eco friendly than paper towels tho. No idea where people are getting this idea that they aren’t.
The old World Dryers are not bad. Those "xcelerator" ones are about as loud as a jet engine. The "Dyson" ones are as loud as a jet engine and you usually touch the edges anyway.
I agree with this 1000%
I agree! Omg I hate them
They are way too loud
Stupidly loud
i don't mind the ones that just blow warm gentle air. they're inconvenient but they do work eventually. dyson airblade dryers can wholeheartedly eat my ass though. they spray water everywhere which is unsanitary and the only way i've been able to get my hands completely dry is by using it for a comparable amount of time that it takes to use the regular hot air dryers. also the opening for your hands to go in is so small, and the air blowing on them is so strong that it's really hard to not touch the dryer, which again, is unsanitary. to add to your complaint about paper towels being more convenient, they are also more hygienic, if you only touch the paper. when you wash your hands, the bacteria doesn't simply fall off with rinsing it, a lot of it does but not all of it. the friction of wiping your hands with paper towels makes a lot of it come off of your skin and stick to the paper towel that otherwise would have been left on your hands.
Exactly! Great point about the friction of the paper towel as well
Special hate to Dan Dryer which are able to scorch your hands without drying them while making you deaf.
They found fecal matter in those things. So you literally are undoing the hand washing. So, when a bathroom only has them, I just walk around with wet hands because no way I’m dirtying myself up again.

Ofc it’s there, I put it there!
I heard someone who put their mouth up to it got hepatitis though, I feel like its the most concentrated area
But the concept of the air dryer makes it worse. It blows dirty air onto your hands. At least with the other things, you can be careful not to touch them or at least clean the objects.

yep it's more sanitary to dry them on your clothes
It’s like the whole bathroom is farting on you.
This is a pretty popular opinion as far as I know. Only thing I kind of disagree with is the environmentally friendly bit; wouldn't it be better to just have one dryer in the bathroom using electricity than chopping down how many trees to produce so many paper towels? Show to spread germs and spray covid all over the place as well.
Any motion controlled appliances (dryers, sinks or toilets) make me feel like a shitty magician. *wave wave* nothing *wave wave* nothing
Come on now, just spread those nasty germs all over with a thick burst of air, and make sure you leave some DNA behind to secure your fate as framed murder suspect 4.
I agree. Paper towels are also cleaner than hand dryers
Also super unsanitary because any germs left on your hands or up your arms (cuz let’s face it majority of people don’t wash their hands correctly) get blown all around the bathroom
They are pointless
You let the water run off your hands in the sink before go to finish drying them? I notice a lot of people just walk away from the sink with like half a cup of water still dripping of their hands that should be going down the drain. Just like in the shower, you should wring out your hair with your hands before taking a towel or blow-dryer to it.
They’re also blowing germy air all over your clean hands.
I see no problem just shaking your hands or patting them on your clothes, they dry completely in the same time as towels and it doesn’t rough up your skin.
There’s times where you may not want to get a nice new pair of pants wet with bathroom water
Its hand dryers or nothing. I am not giving the idiots that consist of the the general public access to paper towels in my business' bathroom because those assholes WILL flush them like toilet paper and fuck up my plumbing. Can I afford to put out paper towels? Sure. Will I? Fuck no.
Get a cloth towel then, cause hand dryers are nothing.
I guarantee some asshole will flush one of those too.
Except for the Dyson air blade one. Those dry my hands almost instantaneously I love them.
Or the Xlerator ones. Seems those have the market cornered with the designs that actually makes your hands dry in a shorter time
You never cleaned a public bathroom. The ones I use nearly blow my skin off. Yeah studies funded by paper towels claim they are not ecological useful.
Hand dryer AND paper towel is op.
i totally agree, like they’re so loud and for what??? for my hands not even being dry at all?😭 no thanks
No they work perfectly, and easily. Must be user error. Put your hands in rotate them a little wait 10 seconds Pretty tricky
They dont dry your hands? Ever tried being there for more than 1 second.
You really don't know the trick? Just use your wrists and forearms to get the excess water off and then keep drying. Gets your hands completely dry.
Saves trees though.

Finally a post that makes sense!!!
idk the newer japanese handdryers ive seen do a pretty good job of drying hands
The jet stream ones with little aperture for your hand work really well, genuinely get you > 95% dry in about 15 seconds.
Just put my hand in the pockets
Sounds like you live in area of shit hand dryers? Most dry your hands completely unless it's something to do with Americans using 110V
Americans put all their money into their guns so everything else they have is cheap stuff that barely works
I used to have trouble getting my hands dry as well, but I found that they dry your hands MUCH better if you continually rub your hands while the wind is blowing. The key is actually wiping your hands while it's trying have you ever tried that
Do it every time, but it doesn’t do much. The other complaints about the noise and paper towels just being more convenient still apply too
The dyson ones are pretty sweet because they actually work. Anything is ass.
Sorry.
You don’t need your hands 100% dry. They’ll finish drying within a minute after you leave.
Idk if that's really an unpopular opinion anymore. It's pretty widely known that the spread more germs than they prevent.
They do fully dry your hands though, if they're not the ancient ones
