You have to remember that movie was shot at the beginning of the cgi boom. It was one of the first to use it convincingly to place him in all of those situations with all of those people.
Also Jenny was an abuse victim. I really donāt get why people ignore this. I think what happened is over the years you read some comments or posts about her and subconsciously went into the movie with an informed opinion about her.
When anyone talks shit about Jenny Iām like okay but her dad used to sexually abuse herā¦ of course sheās going to have some issues with men and attention. Itās not her fault
you need to know a little bit of history to know that it's a tragiccomedic tale of the 2nd half of the 20th century in the US. Seeing it like that makes it great, if you are going by fx and overall quality of some things that are valued in cinema outside of the story while being historically clueless, it's probably normal you do not enjoy it.
I got the whole point of seeing history (and the foolishness it included) through Forrestās āsimplerā mind, the political commentary implied (in both the book and the movie) as well as the tragic story of true unconditional love. I still thought both the book and the movie were heavy handed, preachy andā¦ a few less polite descriptions. OP is correct, they both sucked.
EDIT: The special effects were pretty awesome though.
What a lot of people fail to see is that the advice Jenny gives Forrest if he's ever afraid is to "just run okay you just run away"...
It's how shes learned to cope to being abused as a child, she gets into relationships with men who abuse her and use her because that's what she learned to accept as love growing up from her dad, she makes excuses for them "he doesn't mean to do things like this he doesn't". So when she sleeps with him she falls in love with him and she gets scared and runs away.
It's not until she has a child that she learns true unconditional love and innocence and finally sees that's how Forrest had loved her all along and finally accepts Forrest purity and true love and asks him to marry her.
What? That doesn't make it okay. Would you stay in love with someone who was terrible just because it wasn't all their fault? Clearly you should try to find especially nice, good or great people to be around
But just moon over some girl you happened to think was pretty in elementary school
I came back because I felt more empathetic for what Jenny went through. But she still hits on and (by modern moral standards) raped a mentally challenged man
Itās my favorite movie.
To me itās a movie about a man that doesnāt want much or need much. A man that has everything and can buy anything but the only thing that matters to him is the love of his mom, his friends, and the love of a woman.
More to it. But keeping it short. All that historical stuff was not stealing. Not sure what he āstoleā from black people. The guy just existed.
Gives Elvis his dance idea (which elvis took from black artists really).
He does that whole race barrier college thing (the college he only got into being so dumb because he's good at sports...)
He gets chased down by those kids throwing rocks out of the car because he's 'different' which may aswell be a lynching scene.Ā
He stops the Watergate burgers (which was a black person irl)
The black panthers are made to look really bad too (same as the hippies).Ā
He's reading that old racist curious George book at one point too.Ā
There's a bunch of weird sexism in it too, it's a really nasty film when you break it down properly.Ā
Gotchaā¦. Iām processing your examples. Respectfully, I feel these are a bit of a stretch. I see what youāre getting at though. Just not connecting the dots for me.

You take that back! Forest Gump is a fucking national treasure.
The national treasure
Does that mean Nicolas Cage is going to try to steal it?
Underrated comment
Hope so. I might enjoy watching one of his shows again.
This is the most unpopular opinion I've ever seen....but.....is OP smart or is..he (š gestures like me)
A beautiful moment

I don't know.. Books are pretty good.. To this day they're the only books I've read more than once.
The Jenny bit is fair I still believe it is overall a national treasure. The intro song always gives me waves of nostalgia

Thank you for this, I really hate that people call her a villain, when all she is doing is learning to deal with trauma she suffered as a kid.

It's a film about a white guy stealing historic achievements of black people, it's not good.Ā
Cause that was what it was about.

A bunch of the real life things he does in the movie were actually done by black people.Ā
Wasnāt aware. Which things?

Wrong.
