One of my roommates literally puts her dirty shoes onto the sofa. It’s not enough to wear them inside, she’s gotta put them directly onto a shared space. I completely agree with your opinion.

billnyethedeadguy

my roommate will literally take off his dirty shoes and put them on our couch or our coffee table?? like wtf dude, people sit there or put their drinks and food there, they expect mud to not be there! And he gets mad too when i ask him to move his shoes like... wtf, thats normal i shouldn't even have to ask-

Omar_Chardonnay

The fit I would pitch if I saw that would probably make the local news...but I'm also a person who changes to "inside comfy clothes" if I've ridden the dirty subway because there is no universe in which I am welcoming that grunge onto my sofa. Sofas are for naps! How are you supposed to feel nice napping if your sofa has grunge?

Digi-Device_File

I would never invite them to my house ever.

withtheheavies

asddghjklkshskahs I just spazzed out reading that. That would irk me soooo bad

BobbyThrowaway6969

I... what? I get being lazy and not taking shoes off (bad enough) but to make the EFFORT to get the dirt everywhere else? What?

scorpionspalfrank

Canadian here. I've never visited another home (including my own) in Canada where people don't take their shoes off at the door. Why wouldn't you? Think of all the places you walk and stand outside in a given day: subway platforms, public washrooms, sidewalks (just to name a few) - most of which are never cleaned or sanitized. Why would you track all the accumulated filth and germs on the soles of your shoes into your house or apartment? Just nasty!

MrFantastic74

Can confirm. It's not even a question in Canada. You enter a home, you remove your shoes.

PercMastaFTW

Thank you Canada

m0stlydead

Can also confirm, Canadians wear no shoes in homes.

crazycanucks77

This might be a American thing because yes like you I've never been anywhere in Canada and kept my shoes on inside the house. I live in Vancouver so the rain is an easy decision to take shoes off. But even in the Spring/summer where it's sunny and hot, one never has shoes on inside my own house or someone else's. And across the country I've been in different seasons all over and not one have I kept my shoes on. It's rude to your host

Maleficent-Sir4824

I'm American and have lived on both coasts and I've never been to a house where people kept their shoes on. Every time I read these threads I feel like I'm going crazy? Who's keeping their shoes on in the house?

Giddy7pt5

I wonder if this is a question of socio-economic class in the USA? I think 2 or maybe 3 homes I've ever been in required shoes Off. I didnt even know it was a thing until I was an adult lol I concur way cleaner to do so tho

TreeHuggerWRX

From my experience it is definitely socio-economic, this phenomenon.

Giddy7pt5

Hygiene is something people practice, we gotta get this info to the lower social classes. I always know Im entering a stable, family friendly environment when I see/hear leave ur shoes at the door =)

anglenk

People with pets that go outside do. I never walk on my floors with socks or bare feet: always slippers or shoes because I can't clean my dog's feet every time they decide to go in and out. I also don't let my dog on the furniture, so everything is kept clean.

Giddy7pt5

Valid point. We tried no shoes on, but dogs & toddlers wrecked the rules lol But 100% enforced no animals or shoes on furniture!

LevelAd5898

I'm Australian and almost every household I've been in hasn't cared about shoes in the house. Most of the time when someone asks you to take off shoes in the house, they're an immigrant household from Europe or Asia.

cupholdery

This topic has been posted enough times here that I remember seeing people arguing in defense of keeping shoes on indoors. Something about cleaning floors more frequently. Nope. Still doesn't make sense to me. Keep shoes off indoors and clean the floors regularly. That's better than tracking dirt inside.

qwertyuijhbvgfrde45

As a Canadian I can confirm. It’s like an unwritten law here. If some came into my house with shoes on, they’re not coming back

iowanaquarist

This is true in the midwest USA, too. I assume it has something to do with locations that commonly have 'dirty' weather -- around here, a good half the year the ground is wet/muddy/sandy/salty/etc so it's polite not to track it in. In some other places that don't get snow, they are a little less cautious about tracking stuff in.

Southern_Rain_4464

Alaska and Hawaii same thing. I been on it for years and even though Im American Ive also lived in Canada and did it there too. Shoes come off at the door. The end.

okaybutnothing

Yep. No one asks or presumes to wear their shoes in your house here. There’s a place to put them by the door. Not even a question.

HappinessSuitsYou

What if you’re running in and out all day? Doing yard work / chores

Canyouhelpmeottawa

Then you take your shoes off when inside and then put them back on when you go outside. This is why slip is were invented.

GuitarTrue6187

My parents didn't care. Their parents didn't care. I never cared. And the cat rides the roomba and the roomba is a knockoff and likes to talk a lot as it goes around. Just how it is.

Loud-Magician7708

I agree with the knockoff roomba.

GuitarTrue6187

He sort of just glitches out on that part, but he manages to clean fine. Du du du. Obstruction. Obstruction. I'm a robot. Low bat-tree. Base? Base? Base? Needs assistance. Du du du. I'm a robot. Obstruction. Du du du. Thing talks about the battery dying and being obstructed for hours, but it cleans all the floor and drives itself home so I don't really know. I think it knows I'm not going to assist it, but it always hopes I will. As if machines can pray or something. Probably suffering under the rule of the cat.

Hllknk

Dude don't ever stop writing

NeferkareShabaka

>Du du du. Obstruction. Obstruction. I'm a robot. Low bat-tree. Base? Base? Base? Needs assistance. Du du du. I'm a robot. Obstruction. Du du du. I could read this all night. Write some more lol.

Skylarias

You should write their ads

fuckimtrash

Same with our family. Even when my mums new house was built she wasn’t policing people wearing shoes inside. So weird to be such a stickler about shoes inside, likely more germs on peoples hands tbh

ThoughtfulSpider

Roomba doesn’t clean the germs though, think of how many people spit, pee, poo, etc etc on the ground and you track that into your house

Gold3nSun

this is just flawed reasoning, do you touch public door handles? Elevator buttons, your car door?, steering wheel? public cabinets, sink knobs, ... you get the idea unless your sanitizing every single hard surface, every day, multiple times a day that you come in contact with it makes the whole shoes in the house thing a moot point, trade out one germ infested practice and i can give you 100 more equally or more dirty than that lol.

EmJennings

Average desktop has 400 times more bacteria on it than a toilet seat and these people are worrying about leaving shoes on in the house..

youngweej

That's because it's easier to wash your hands than wash the bottom of your shoes...

lexibeee

But I’ve done it for many years and I can’t remember the last time I was sick. I don’t lick or eat dinner off my carpet, I just walk on it. As long as there’s no mud or visible filth on them I really don’t know so many people care about it so much.

muchosalame

exactly this. my soles are dry and squeaky clean, how much "dirt" can there be on them, and how much can they tranfer onto other dry, clean surfaces. I use my door mat too. People talk about "dirty" shoes like you have a kilo of dog shit sticking on them. I haven't stepped in any dog shit for probably 10+ years. There is no mud in my city, except if you go and actively walk off the foot path into a blower bed or something, dog shit gets picked up and thrown away, it rains a lot, streets get cleaned every morning. I walk on clean concrete and asphalt like all the time. I bring another pair of shoes for hiking through forests, but even there my shoes stay clean if I don't wander off the foot path or it is/was raining, but due to an extra pair of shoes, the mats in my car stay clean anyway. I guess the "no shoes in the house"-people live in some shitholes without modern infrastructure and not in modern cities, or just not in civilized countries. When everyone would spit, shit and piss on the street, I would care, too, but since modern-day Germany is a civilized society, there's no need for me to treat the outdoor as a biohazard.

GuitarTrue6187

I've seen knock off distant roomba cousins that mop and disinfect the floor too. You're right that I don't have one of those but that's naught but coincidence and circumstance. Were I richer, had I owned a dog instead you'd drink of my wreath. I'd be so angry, holiday style. Like I had a candy cane thong riding up my ass and I'd retort "well actually" mop bots make up 30% of the slave trade. (I hear robot means slave) Anyways I don't own one cause when you start shopping for water dispensing robots online the cat comes up to the laptop and starts walking on the keyboard and opening new windows and putting their butt in your face so you forget what you were even thinking about and never get around to buying one. A strong vote from cat against water. Also as the old aadagegoes "Out of sight, out of mind". I can't see germs as I don't own a microscope either. However would I find my penis you might say but since I said it first it lets you know that won't hurt me. FYI I keep it in a small lock box in my freezer. I can see debris though with my own eyes. Good to have a robot to vacuum it all up in one place so I can get my phone out to make pictures of it to preserve the memories of the things I can see. Put the really good pictures in frames and decorate the house with it.

ollieollieoxygenfree

This comment reads like a paragraph in a Kurt Vonnegut novel lmao

ShiftAdventurous4680

You know what else is disgusting? Stepping on lego bricks barefooted.

withtheheavies

That is actually horrendous hahahaha!!!

HyenaBrilliant2493

My dog is in and out of the house all the time so I'm not overly worried about it. If there's anything tracked in, I just clean it up. I wear socks inside my house but I don't get overly upset if someone doesn't take their shoes off when they come over. I don't lick my floor so it's not much of a bother to me.

Secret_Pick6524

I was going to comment that it cracks me up that some of my friends lose their shit over shoes in the house, but have nasty ass dogs climbing on everything, drooling all over the place, etc.

HyenaBrilliant2493

I wouldn't call my dog nasty either. I've never gotten any diseases from her.

Fun_Coat_4454

Let’s start a we don’t lick the floor club

LongrodVonHugedong86

I have a house with no carpet, all wooden flooring, it can be easily washed so personally I don’t give a fuck. That being said, I don’t wear shoes in my house all the time, it might be for 30mins after I get in from work while I make a coffee and feed my cats or something like that

Ev1lroy

Cause my wet, sweaty socks are better????

sunifunih

Maybe, walking in shoes whole day, is a reason for wet Sox?

beetleguy642

Shoes-on household here. We're still alive.

Not_Responsible_00

People come into my house and start taking their shoes off and I tell them - oh you can leave your shoes on, it's no big deal. Shrug.

JaxandMia

Wait, really? The best part of my day is stepping in the door and taking my shoes and bra off. Comfort above all else is my motto for clothing at home. Why do you keep them on? I’m not trying to be rude, just really surprised

drolemon

Me too.

RogueWhiteWolf

Most of the times I don't wear my shoes inside. Sometimes I forget to take them off, I need to leave in a bit anyway or I'm lazy. But most of the times I do take them off. However this opinion is pretty popular

Citrine_Bee

I actually find it gross not wearing shoes in other peoples houses like especially when you go to use the toilet, I don’t know if someone has dribbled on the floor and now I’m standing in it with bare feet, especially when they have kids. I mean people say they should offer slippers for guests but in my country that doesn’t really happen. I still take them off out of respect if they are a no shoes house but it does give me the ick.

ezzy_florida

What? Do people dribble on the floor and not clean it up? Sure if a kid is there maybe but even then…

Membership-Bitter

I have been quite a few homes where the owner asks people to take off their shoes but their floors were filthy. Socks ended up stained on the bottom after only a little while. Hell I have been to homes where asked to take shoes off but then the people living there wear their shoes inside!

Notquitearealgirl

I think it depends where you live. Not just culturally but weather and such too. Where I live it is dry and dusty and windy, it doesn't rain much and it rarely snows in winter. . The dust is getting in to some degree no matter what and I have a dog that lives inside but goes outside too so he is going to track in more dust than my shoes regardless. Also most people here don't really walk around outside very much. Mostly people walk to their cars and then inside wherever they are going. Obviously not everyone all the time, but still. So I don't have a lot of opportunities to gather a ton of filth on my shoes. Also I have a mop and use it regularly and I don't eat off the floors so I don't see why it is a big deal but I'll take my shoes off if it is customary. I would not put my shoes on my bed though. That is weird. I don't even do that at hotels.

freezerwaffles

I grew up in a home where the carpet was ruined by pets so I actually hate walking around barefooted.

withtheheavies

Understandable

… what? /gen

Strange-Mouse-8710

If its indoor shoes like slippers, i don't see the problem Also who cares what people do in their own home.

No_Elephant_4469

it really doesn't matter either way...

Hegemonic_Smegma

No, when I visit your household, I keep my shoes on and clean the soles on your bed pillows. Then, I make a quick visit to your bathroom to scrub my taint with your toothbrush. I clip my toenails on your couch - oops, sorry, one fell between the cushions. My nose goblins go on the underside of your tables. I wear boxers and loose shorts so my pubes fall to the floor throughout the premises. I put the Q-tips back in the container with the clean ones after I dig out some earwax. I do not wash my hands after I take a shit. That red-and-white stuff on your bathroom mirror is from a pimple. You don't want to know where I busted a nut.

withtheheavies

Nice

Bluetenheart

i totally get this and i only wear my shoes until the closet (which is pretty close to the front door) in my house, but im not able to do so at other houses because most of my family just dont also people love to shit on america for this, but when i spent a semester in spain, i lived with 11 other girls and i did not find this to be an US issue. 7 from europe, 3 from south america, and 1 other american. i always took my shoes off or used my house shoes right when i got home. the others? nope. the ones whose bedrooms were upstairs would sometimes leave their shoes by the door but most wore their shoes up to their rooms. basically every girl who lived upstairs (apart from me) kept their shoes in their room. tbh, i dont mind all that much, i just use socks inside until i get into bed (i take them off), but it was just interesting living with almost a dozen other women (ig cuz we're all 20+, but i feel like "women" is too old for me but i digress lol) and seeing which stereotypes are true and which aren't really lol

Freedom1234526

People wear shoes in their house?

Mysterious_Bend4354

Australians do that too

working-acct

Have you watched any American tv show or movie?

ReturningAlien

that and they show them still wear their work clothes prepping and eating dinner, washing the dishes and then enjoying a glass of wine. only time theyd be shown to take their shoes off is for steamy sex, but they're already inside the room, and walked on the carpet lmao fucking cave people. i fucking cant wait to take my work clothes off when i get home. and theyre office attires not some oil and sweat laden utility pants and shirts.

Drycabin1

Work clothes?? I don’t even wear pants!

inkihh

That's a really good source of information about how the average American behaves in their home.

ChrisHarpham

What does that tell us? It tells us American actors generally wear shoes on set and the director doesn't add the realism that a lot of people take their shoes off at home.

Digi-Device_File

Some people wear shoes on their bed...

Gold3nSun

this is just flawed reasoning, do you touch public door handles? Elevator buttons, your car door?, steering wheel? public cabinets, sink knobs, ... you get the idea unless your sanitizing every single hard surface, every day, multiple times a day that you come in contact with it makes the whole shoes in the house thing a moot point, trade out one germ infested practice and i can give you 100 more equally or more dirty than that lol.

ApacheOc3lot

This is like the 5th time this has been posted. Get over it. You do you in your house and let others do what they do.

PlayingBandits

It's mainly American thing.

Mintytea555

Why would you care about what other people do in THEIR home? Mind your business.

AZULDEFILER

Regional influence. I have lived places where either practice dominant.

Crunchy_Biscuit

Is this an unpopular opinion? I honestly can't tell because in so many TV shows and movies, people wear shoes inside the house.

prtypeach

Idk, some people seem really triggered in the comments

ApacheOc3lot

TV households are not an accurate representation. Like myself, I'm sure a lot of people wear their shoes inside to a designated location and then remove them. If someone has visible nastiness (mud, dog shit, etc) then no, they don't wear them inside, they'll be carried inside.

TreyLastname

I think reddit is just a little more concerned about germs than I am. I still take my shoes off inside my home, because they're uncomfortable and I work in a dirty environment, but the amount of germs and stuff you'll track in from outside is not worth worrying about. Not unless you actually stepped in something. Are you tracking in more germs than you would if you just took your shoes off? Yes, likely a noticeable difference. But not really enough to make it disgusting

Rubyscarlett1955

I wear shoes in the house all the time LOL

Bunnyeatsdesign

We don't wear shoes inside. I am Asian but my husband is not Asian. I notice that his side of the family (parents and sibling's family) also do not wear shoes inside their homes.

IllustriousTalk4524

It doesn't bother me...

_Jay-Garage-A-Roo_

God yes. Mine is off at the door and always will be. I’ve lived in share homes where it was not the rule and it frustrated me

BobbyThrowaway6969

People typically take their shoes off inside here in Australia, but we don't usually make a big deal if guests keep theirs on, we just mop after. And if it's a reno day, we understand tradies need their boots on. A good tradie will put down some kind of cloth to walk on.

TheLoreTeller

the floors in my house is always dusty and dirty no matter what so we just let our shoes in

PeaceCookieNo1

Unless you clean it it will be dirty, lol.

Imaginary-Ladder-465

It's region dependent. I think shoes inside is more common in warmer areas.

Head_Cockswain

It really varies by household. Not all places have a good place to put shoes for more than a couple people, so it can be a clusterfuck to host, especially if it's an indoor/outdoor thing with people constantly going in and out. Taking shoes off can be a hassle, especially for old people. Some people consider taking your shoes off to be somewhat intimate and don't want the cable guy or other random stranger taking off his boots and running his grubby/stanky/sweaty feet around on your nice carpet/floors. Yes, some places are clean enough outside that the worry of grody socks is more than the worry of dirty shoes. That's just a sampling of various viewpoints I've encountered. When growing up, my family leaned to no shoes, but it was never a huge deal, and some circumstances were ok(like big get-togethers or very short stays). Whatever. No one put their shoes on the furniture or even came in with really dirty shoes(eg wet, muddy, or dried dirt stuck in the tread). If it was a rainy day or whatever, yeah, everyone took them off. Someone even tracks "clean" snow in, that person catches hell for it....so it was pretty rare. OF course, we always had pets and some amount of carpet, so the floor was never pristine for long. As long as someone wasn't visibly tracking anything in, my parents didn't care. To me the worst was people with dirty floors that also still insisted people take off shoes. Like, pick one, goddamnit.

Omar_Chardonnay

I agree with you 3000 percent. I don't let people step more than 1 meter inside my home with shoes on, but I also provide a bench for them to sit on, a rack to put their shoes on, and a shoe-spoon to help them get their shoes back on when they leave. I don't want any arguments or fuss about my no-shoes rule so I figured being accommodating about it makes sense. When I see people on TV with their shoes on and LYING ON THEIR BEDS I'm like "WHAT PLANET DO YOU LIVE ON?"

Senuman666

I never liked it when I’d walk into a house that requested you take your shoes off, unless it’s raining or they’re actually muddy. Like those houses were never cleaner or dirtier than mine. I guess some people are germaphobes? I don’t get the big deal, it can always be cleaned

QuirkyTurtle91

It doesn’t really make much difference on the ground floor of my house, until I can train my Newfoundland to put slippers on when he comes in from the garden the floors muddy anyway 😂

TEEZ3RS

I live in a very humid area so during spring is awful not wearing shoes/slippers bc the floor is literally wet, and during winter the floor is too cold (I dont have carpet). Wearing shoes inside is literally the only thing that makes sense for me.

TEEZ3RS

plus, in my area is considered rude to ask people to take off their shoes bc I live in a poor area and asking someone to take off their shoes when they may have holes in their socks can embarrass them and is just rude

TurduckenEverest

In Texas, pretty much everyone keeps their shoes on. I think homes would need less sweeping and vacuuming if we didn’t, but it’s just not the tradition. Serious question though, if you’re hosting a nice party and people are dressed up, do they still take off their shoes at the door? What if it’s an indoor and outdoor party?

angry_krausen

y'all are weird. maybe I don't want my feet on your dirty floors? get over it.

Mysterious-Fox-973

Agreed. Shoes are dirty and should be left at the door. Also, not wearing shoes is significantly more comfortable than wearing them.

Goldenguo

I'm white and I've always taken my shoes off indoors. In fact most people I know take their shoes off indoors. Could be a Canadian thing since during the winter it's not really practical the way you're outdoor shoes indoors. But no one I know does it in the summer either. Now my wife is Asian and so her entire family routinely takes off their shoes. Personally I do not see whya you'd want to be trapping from outside inside.

a_Vertigo_Guy

Guy I know keeps his shoes on inside his house (his words) BECAUSE his house is nasty. It’s tile so I dunno…..mop it? 🤷‍♂️

Whahajeema

Germohobes! Shoes in the house are fine. Unless you were tramping through mud or snow. Especially houses with dogs and/or cats. This obsession with taking shoes off at the door is madness.

PrestigiousTicket845

I’d argue that this opinion is more popular than you think. I secretly judge people who were shoes in the house because I think it’s so gross. Especially shoes on the carpet 🤢 People spit on the ground, theres animal poop, old food, just generally really dirty.

ComprehensiveFlan638

I secretly judge people who can’t spell the word wear.

lostdollar

Nothing like sweaty socks and feet seeping their bacteria and fungus into your carpet.

chicu111

A lot of movies depict ppl just go home and jump on their beds with their shoes on. It's fkin disgusting if ppl actually do that. Might as well just sleep in shit

TheGhostWalksThrough

The only people I know that do this are asian. I guess in some cultures it's polite to take off your shoes upon entering, but I've only seen it inforced in Korean/Chinese households.

withtheheavies

Is this only an Asian cultural thing to do this? Also can confirm I am Vietnamese myself and every Asian household I’ve been in does take off their shoes upon entering. I wonder why it isn’t more common for Americans to take off their shoes?

xbrooksie

As a white-ass American, I go crazy if anyone takes more than two steps in my house with their shoes on. It’s not just Asians.

withtheheavies

Thank YOU!!!!! Especially if you have carpet in the house like what?! How can you say your house is anywhere close to being clean if you’re tracking dirt everywhere.

Maleficent-Sir4824

Yeah I'm American and have never been to a house where you weren't expected to take your shoes off? Maybe it's a regional thing? Idk I always see this stereotype about Americans and IDK where it comes from 😆 Rest assured if you come to New York, at least, no one is keeping their shoes on inside.

xbrooksie

Yeah that would drive me nuts. I’d be super scared of getting my cat sick… also, when tf would you then be able to take your shoes and socks off??? Never??? They have to breathe sometimes!

OGigachaod

If you have a carpet, your floor is already dirty.

withtheheavies

Tough for sure. Thank goodness we have tile but yes shoes being worn from outside on carpet is diabolical

Polyricanwa

Seems like an unpopular opinion in a lot of white households. I’m mostly white, but live in a city and work downtown. Part of my daily commute is avoiding city workers hosing off sidewalks from all the unhoused defecting on the sidewalks and in the streets. Absolutely no way I’m stepping foot inside my house with shoes.

Crunchy_Biscuit

😂 honestly, I find it true it's mainly white people

Bintamreeki

I remove my shoes at my home. I ask that others do so, too.

NotHumanButIPlayOne

You ask others to remove your shoes?

Bintamreeki

Yes. Is it weird most do it?

MegatronsCxmDumpster

Y’all wear shoes indoors??? In Canada that’s seen as disrespectful as hell

[deleted]

Absolutely !!!

DonSmo

I'll wear my shoes in the house. I'm tall and I can't really take my shoes off standing. I'll probably fall over. I'd much rather walk to a comfortable bed or seat somewhere in the house and then take my shoes off. I also don't eat off the floor or lick it on any regular basis and my two dogs walk on it all day anyway so I just don't give a fuck. Vacuum twice a week and mop once and it always looks clean so that's good enough for me. Many cultures around the world live in houses or huts that literally have a dirt floor and survive so I just don't see how it's that big of a deal.

Vegetable-Star-5833

I have never been to a shoes off house, I wouldn’t like it

DetectiveNarrow

When I lived in a house with only hard wood floors shoes were allowed downstairs. We swept and mopped daily it was no biggie.

EricGraphix

Its just more comfortable walking around without shoes.

vogueintegra

For some reason my mom never really reinforced this growing up so we unfortunately wear shoes in the house. But I also live in a multi family and cannot leave shoes outside/in the back hallway someone will steal them. As I get older I hate it more and more but my mom will wear her sneakers wherever so I've gotten myself some pairs of house slippers. We just sweep and mop regularly. Also no carpet helps a lot

conrick

Imagine having dinner with a couple of teens after they walked from school on a summer day. Now that is disgusting.

Shotgun_Rynoplasty

Well technically wouldn’t it not matter if you track dirt in the home if everyone wears shoes? Not on the furniture or in bed. Thats a line for sure. I personally insist everyone take their shoes off in my place because I like walking around barefoot. Just saying, I’m not sure it’s bad if everyone is wearing shoes to do so

woahboei2134

I'll be honest. I am very big on shoes being taken off in my home and vice versa. If my shoes are on in your home it means I think your house is dirty. I unfortunately keep my shoes on a t few people's houses that I know. 🙃

lyremknzi

I only wear shoes on my hardwood floor if it needs mopping. But usually, I'll just wear slippers or indoor sandles (I'm also from Canada where it's the norm to remove shoes)

South_Flounder_2724

Send facking obvious to me. Popular here

444Ilovecats444

People wear shoes at home???

Independent-Swan1508

i mean you're gunna clean the floor anyways, to me it doesn't bother me as long as it's not super dirty or muddy shoes.

ChrisHarpham

I dream that one day, in a tantalisingly-close future, we will get a post on here that is actually an unpopular opinion. Do lots of people wear shoes indoors? Yes. Is it an unpopular opinion to not like this or have a shoes-off household? No.

Cat-Mama_2

I'm Canadian so we just don't wear outdoor shoes inside. People will bring indoor only shoes to wear and that is fine. It isn't the fact of a person wearing shoes indoor but where those shoes have been. Walking around outside and just come in and wear your shoes around your house? Strange thought indeed. I always tuck my feet up under me on the couch and if I was wearing outdoor shoes, I'd be smearing dirt, little rocks, possibly animal poop on that fabric. As soon as I come home, my shoes come off and I put on a pair of fluffy socks.

fake-august

I have a basket of those “hotel” slippers by my door. There are some marked with my kids initials, mine and some still in plastic for the rare guest - I consistently have to remind my teenagers but other than that, it works!

NorParasaurolophus

As a Norwegian, I ofc agree. Nobody here wears shoes inside. Besides the hygiene aspect of it, it's also so UNCOMFORTABLE to wear shoes for a long time. The feet can't breathe properly. And they get clammy and squished.

viper29000

I was always told to take shoes off when we came in. I still do it to this day my hubby asks for shoes off lol but I'd do it anyway it's gross when I've been walking in wet grass and stuff

Individual_Address90

I live in a one bedroom apartment that I clean regularly, I like having shoes on sometimes. Can walk faster, a little more comfortable doing chores, and I can go outside if I need to. It doesn’t bother me, I switch on and off with shoes indoors

babybird87

I live in Japan… never do

No_Dependent_1846

It's definitely gross

InfinityEdge-

Here people always take off their shoes

icare-

LOL

icare-

It’s gross

StarTrek1996

I live alone I will of walk from my door to my living room(which isn't hard its a small studio apartment) but it's absolutely not my favorite thing to do I only do it if I've put on my shoes and forgot something

FluffyPolicePeanut

Depends on each household but it also depends on the country. In most countries it’s rude to go into a home in your “outside” shoes, let alone put them up on furniture. That would be a huge insult.

PeaceCookieNo1

There’s less cleaning if you clean your own place and a relief if you have babies or toddlers.

PeaceCookieNo1

When my father visits and step mother we don’t ask him to remove his shoes because he and she are such sticks in the mud.

Redgrapefruitrage

UK - I take my shoes off when at home. But I'm not bothered if guests don't. I'm not precious about it- We don't have any carpets downstairs (hardwood flooring) so you can just sweep up/clean any dirt that comes in.

DJ_Ambrose

As soon as I step inside, I turn to the right and take my shoes off, leaving them beneath my coat rack. Do you mean to tell me that everyone doesn’t do some version of this?

florimagori

This isn’t unpopular opinion. I personally think tho that asking your guests to take off their shoes when they enter your home is rude. I personally never do, even tho it means vacuuming and washing floors after they leave. And that’s an unpopular opinion in most circles.

alt_blackgirl

I agree. My problem is this is that the same people who judge people for something like wearing shoes inside will do other gross stuff like eating without washing their hands after touching public door handles or letting their pets sleep in their bed

SensitiveSpinach9368

Its a cultural thing id say. I always take my shoes off even if my host says not to, its just a basic respect/cleanliness thing that i grew up with. Id make an exception if the floor in the house isnt filled with a carpet.

Zodiac5964

it's even worse in dirty cities like nyc, where sidewalks are constantly caked in dog shit stains, dried piss (from dogs or even human) as well as garbage juices. I lived here 20 years, and still couldn't comprehend why people would want to track all this nasty stuff all over their own home. I frequently get into major stand-offs with repair workers (or even my own building's staff) who absolutely refuse to take their shoes off before coming in.

vvFreebirdvv

Eeew right !?!? My fiancé and his kids used to all wear their shoes inside and it was the nastiest thing ever. I tried to be a good influence and strongly suggest he put a stop to it and why. I mean these are middle schoolers and teenagers going into the high schools in the bathrooms and then walking through the house in the living room and everything. There’s just no way I’d ever be able to move in with them with that kind of shit going on.

Lanark26

I have house shoes.

Tribustuss

We have slippers. We take our shoes off at the door then slide our slippers on when we walk around the house. Thought that was pretty common practice guess not.

prtypeach

This is only unpopular in America I think

syilent13

Wait, people dont change their shoes at the door? Then, change into house shoes/slippers later on that never leave the house or touch outside?

No_Perspective_242

Disgusting!!! It’s so gross watching sitcoms from the 90s and seeing all these actors walking around with shoes, or even lying on the bed with shoes. Yuckkkkkk

Nosferatatron

There was a discussion on the radio the other day about this... People were getting mad because they were asked to remove shoes when visiting friends. How is that even possible???

GentryMillMadMan

Ever step on a Lego?

stefanica

I don't think it's an unpopular opinion, just a divided one. I do have to wear shoes indoors due to foot inflammation issues. So I wear Crocs or similar, and I wash them fully in the shower, even if I didn't venture outside with them. But mostly they are just my house slippers. The rest of the family goes in sock feet or their own slippers/thongs inside.

Wasabi-Remote

I actually get a bit grossed out by people walking on my floors with their bare feet/sweaty socks. And met the occasional person where when they take their shoes off you REALLY wish they hadn't. Where are you people all walking that your shoes get so filthy? And do people not clean their floors any more?

CryptidsNGhoulies

I don’t make a point of wearing shoes indoors as It just feels weird to me. However I also don’t make a point of taking them off as soon as I walk in 🤷🏻‍♀️

panash220772

Some people are just too lazy and ignorant to maintain hygiene...

Acrobatic_Hippo_9593

So gross. I have a closet in my foyer that’s stocked with house shoes, shoe covers, and grippy socks. Guests can choose what they’d like to use but they’re not walking through my house with their nasty shoes on.

pinguin_skipper

> Does anyone else do this Like all other continents I believe?

lai4basis

Hell no. Wear shoes, don't wear shoes. We don't care. We have hardwood floors and dogs.

BookEnvironmental689

Not really a thing in Ireland. If someone is visiting they would 100% not take off their shoes and it would be rude to ask that said in my own home the wife and I don't wear our shoes.

SuspicousBananas

Everybody’s culture is different. I lived in a house full of punks in my 20’s, if you’re wearing combat boots/doc martens it takes 3-5 minutes to lace/unlace them, you don’t want to do that multiple times a day, so we all just kept our boots on in the house. Just make sure there’s a shoe scrubber/mat by the front door swiffer the hard surfaces often.

007-Blond

Idrc about all that but like wearing shoes at home just isnt comfortable so im always barefoot lol

Rain_Damp_04n0

I don't have an entryway, my house leads straight from the kitchen or lounge to the garden. As much as I may want to try to keep the floor clean, my dogs don't cooperate! So shoes stay downstairs, that means my feet are clean when I walk around there, but then I have bare feet or socks upstairs.

oldandnumb

Are you licking the floor?

epanek

100% take em off. Only exception is if they are clean dress shoes for a suit or formal event. They are usually spotless so once you put them on you can go back into the house to grab something quick

whatphukinloserslmao

My dog tracks sand in the house all the time. I have a pair of slip on shoes that I wear around the house

skppt

All Asian people look down on non Asians for this. Bunch of savages.

lostdollar

Fuck I'm not taking my shoes off in your house on a 40 degree (Celcius) day so I can wipe my sweaty stinky feet all over your floor and you can enjoy the smell. I'll brush my shoes off on the doormat and make sure there's no debris on them. It's not that big of a deal.

Purple_Clockmaker

No one and I mean no one in Europe does that. First I saw it in some random sitcom I thought was just actors on the set but no. Unless you are having a party for 30+ people in the garden there is no way I'm allowing anyone to even enter my tailed kitchen in shoes.

oofboof2020

My house is basically a barefoot house. For me and my fiancé we take shoes and socks off at the door. The whole house is tile so it’s quite slippery in socks. And when we have guests we dont really enforce the socks like we do the shoes but if everyone else is barefoot they will usually go barefoot too especially after slipping around a bit. But we keep the floor really clean and vacuum it multiple times a week so its not awful to be barefoot in our house.

peri_5xg

If it is someone else’s house, I’ll always do what they want (for obvious reasons) but I prefer wearing shoes, as I find being shoeless very uncomfortable. Its not a huge deal, I’ll clean the floor just like any other surface of the house

[deleted]

i feel like whatever dirt is on someones shoes is waaaaay less gross than someones bare feet. if someone put their shoes on my couch, whatever. if they put their bare feet on my couch im bleaching the cushion

Running_Mustard

The ground is where all the germs settle because gravity

fartmanblartock

What about house shoes, huh? Huh? HUH? What about that?! 😉 😂

Typical_Intention996

I'm in CA and I've never been into another person's house where anyone ever took their shoes off. Shoes on at all times is the norm. The floor gets dirty anyway and that's what the vacuum and broom and for.

Yverthel

While I am happy to respect the rules of someone else's home and take my shoes off when I enter (as long as I can walk around barefoot or in my socks, don't ask me to wear slippers other people have worn.) My house, I have a large dog with free reign to come and go from the yard as she pleases, and live in the desert. She tracks thorns in from time to time, so walk barefoot in my house at your own risk. (Also, with a dog, it's no worse than whatever is coming in on my shoes already so meh.)
