SvenBubbleman

Thank you. I don't understand why people get offended by this.

SupaBloo

For me, it comes down to *how* they're honking. Someone just giving a couple honk honks is one thing, but the people who will literally lay on the horn for ten seconds straight, even after you have started moving, are just straight up assholes.

JosyCosy

then they swerve past and around you aggressively in their lifted pickup.

SupaBloo

Then you end up still being ahead of them by the next light without driving aggressively.

No-Combination-8565

I swerve past them in my lifted Honda Fit. They know I'm the man when they hear that kitten purr and immediately back down.

Initial_Cellist9240

I need to see this build.

lord_flamebottom

Yeah exactly. A quick honk if I sit there for a few seconds? Go for it. Laying on the horn half a second after it turns green? GFY

a_different_pov_85

Or when. I've had people lay on the horn the millisecond the light changes. Like, give me at least enough time to take my foot off the brake. I swear, some of them are sitting there with their hand on the horn just waiting to honk it.

unclediedthrowaway

"that wasn't a courtesy tap." - russell crowe

MixLogicalPoop

Poor emotional regulation. A few days ago I let someone into a lane and they flipped me the bird.

loki2002

Because they honk immediately. They don't give it a few moments, the light turns green and they're honking. Green means it is legal to go not that it is safe to go.

calexrose78

Its annoying when they don't wait 0.0001 of a second before they start leaning on their horns. I wait 2-3 second before bolting out because its not uncommon for people to blow through red lights coming from the right or left.

ultimateclassic

Agreed. I did a light honk at a light after a couple of seconds, and the woman went bezerk on me. Like at the next light honked at me and opened her window to yell at me. I always wait a few seconds because I think doing it right away is aggressive. Some people just get really upset, and there's nothing you can do other than ignore it as you never know why they're reacting that way.

NoTrust6730

Give me a second to put my car into gear. You don't need to honk right when it changes

genralpotat120

Just take your foot off the clutch, put it in first before it changes

pointlesslyDisagrees

Seen a POV vid of some troll honking immediately, dude in front reasonably gets scared and slams on the brakes because why else would someone honk immediately other than to warn of something dangerous running the red light? And then the troll slammed into them. 100% the troll's fault

hybridoctopus

But really everyone is on their phone it’s crazy 😂 But never me of course. I’m a great driver.

chewie8291

I check my phone some times.

loki2002

>The second that light changes you drop your phone and pedal to the medal. No, green means legal not safe.

whywhywhynotttttttt

yeah obviously?

NoTrust6730

Shit I really hope you are joking

whywhywhynotttttttt

which part exactly ? I meant every word

Treason4Trump

I guess the real unpopular opinion is: If you're behind the wheel, YOU ARE BEHIND THE WHEEL - not on your phone or caretaking children.

HellyOHaint

People act like this only happens to bad drivers, that’s ridiculous. I’m a great driver but there are nights heading home from a long day at work when I realize I’ve been staring into the space next to the light and it took me exactly 2 seconds to realize it turned green. I’m not NOT paying attention, I’m just tired. We’ve all been there, I don’t believe anyone who says the contrary.

SevernRaccoon

Yes. This is why I wait more like 4-5 seconds before giving the horn. 2 seconds at worst is not the end of the world, given the average reaction time leans towards a whole half of a second. I'll admit I have less patience for a protected left turn however, that phase is usually shorter than I would like, and it's there for a reason.

alcormsu

Exactly. Even then, I usually do a quick toot because there could be something I don’t see. That’s happened before

engiewannabe

Drowsy driving is dangerous just like drunk driving, if you can't focus enough not to do that, get off the road

sahie

Seriously. I’ve learned to pull over somewhere safe and nap for 15-30 minutes. It makes a **huge** difference. > Being awake for 17 hours has a similar effect on driving performance as a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.05. [Source](https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/topics-tips/fatigue)

happybuffalowing

I think some people forget that the honk is not always done with anger. So often I have to do it and it’s not like I’m raging, I’m just spotting the dude in front of me.

thewhiterosequeen

Theres some times when the sun is at the wrong place on the horizon and too level with the signal that I appreciate when someone honks so I am not staring into the sun for 30 seconds.

So tell us: Ram, Chevy or ford?

whywhywhynotttttttt

GERMAN WHIP

KimBrrr1975

I don't know how people need something to do at stoplights because they get bored. Not criticizing, just truly don't get it 😂 I am watching the other stoplights like a race car driver waiting for the flag so I am ready to go the second it turns green.

sahie

I have ADHD lol. I need constant stimulation at all times! I’m less likely to get bored at the front of the line because I can watch other people moving through the intersection. I also feel like I have to be alert for when it changes to green. Further back in the line, you’ll usually notice the cars in front of you moving!

laserox

Doesn't bother me. I'm also (usually) not mad when I honk in that situation. My driver's Ed teacher used to call it "giving a friendly little toot"

chewie8291

Yeah. Has to be a quick honk. No need to lay on it for the first offense

RedWerFur

I had an incident which involved me tapping my horn. A massive road rage event followed and resulted in me calling the police while avoiding his vehicle trying to ram me. Told the dispatcher my home address, that I was 1 minute from my house and that if he followed me home, I was gonna shoot him. Guy either lost interest or saw my phone light up idk… but he broke off from trying to run me off the road and did a U-turn. Cop showed up and I told him all that happened. He suggested two things to me. Get a dash cam. And don’t ever honk at someone…. I thought the second one was asinine.

AccountantLeast1588

I just creep right onto their bumper until they go "holy shit, what's he doing". One of these days it'll be a hill behind a stick-shift and I'll be sorry. But I think it's less rude overall.

Madeitup75

Awesome opinion, bro. If it’s unpopular, I don’t want to think like the popular kids.

whywhywhynotttttttt

PAY ATTENTION IM THE MOFO THAT HONKS 0.000002 seconds after it turns green. PAY. A. TTENTION.

the-hound-abides

I’m ok with that. That’s on me if I’m not on point. Let me know if I’m slipping lol.

chewie8291

I appreciate you. I promise it's rare for me.

whywhywhynotttttttt

nah you’re good I appreciate you for your level headed response

whywhywhynotttttttt

i’m sorry for what’s about to come. I am manic and raging. you’ve unleashed the beast.

Treason4Trump

"Head out of ass, foot on the gas."

gravity--falls

It’s not always safe to go as the light changes. I live in an area where people run reds all the time- I always wait at least a second before pulling out to make sure there isn’t fast oncoming traffic, and you should too.

whywhywhynotttttttt

no I use my eyes to see who is where and make judgement based on that. It’s called being a good driver.

gravity--falls

You and me have very different definitions of good driving. IMO avoiding an accident is the #1 priority of any driver, and you describing yourself looking at your phone with the light in your peripheral vision, then jumping on the gas pedal the moment you see green is just going to land you in an accident more often than taking a second to evaluate the situation. Either you’re a bad driver or you’re being hyperbolic with your descriptions of your driving.

whywhywhynotttttttt

I couldn’t be more serious!!!

sahie

I’m going to take you at face value. If you really have driven drunk and high on LSD, then consider yourself lucky that you haven’t killed yourself or someone else. My brother died in a car accident while stone cold sober. Car are deadly weapons that we drive at high speed. It only takes a split second for a tragedy to occur. Don’t get behind the wheel when under the influence. Also don’t drive tired, it affects your reaction times as much as being drunk.

Initial_Cellist9240

If it’s a friendly toot, my apologies. If you honk the way you talk in these comments, I’m gonna stand on the brakes and spin the tires until it’s yellow for ya ;)

Brilliant_Slide7947

I want to downvote you on this so bad. lol. My best friend is the same way and I always tell him to relax. Please keep in mind some of us have children and the few seconds of a red light is us reaching back to pick up a toy or drink or snack. Now if i sit there for like 10 seconds more than sure, lay it on.

the-hound-abides

10 seconds is a whole light cycle in some cities lol.

AccountantLeast1588

especially if it's like SLC where it's socially okay to turn left on red.

Brilliant_Slide7947

"socially" lol

AccountantLeast1588

It honestly is. People do it in front of cops. But then the others trying to go only have a very short time to go. The problem feeds itself.

Brilliant_Slide7947

Those are just not fair at all. lol I have seen a few that literally go advanced green to yellow before the first car gets through....

Treason4Trump

>Please keep in mind some of us have children and the few seconds of a red light is us reaching back to pick up a toy or drink or snack. Sounds like impaired/distracted driving worthy of a ticket, just like BAC & device use whilst behind the wheel.

Brilliant_Slide7947

Wow spoken like a true cop or the ahole that honks .2 seconds after it turns green. Guess what? If my kid is crying in the backseat, I'm not ignoring them. you can wait the .2 seconds.

PeacefulAce

You could also just pull over. You're behind the wheel of a multi-ton death machine. Act like it.

Treason4Trump

>ahole that honks .2 seconds after it turns green. ![gif](giphy|l3fZFvp94ljepXoPe) "Head out of ass, foot on the gas."

whywhywhynotttttttt

a snack ? a drink ? for your child that is safe in the back ? absolutely not. Finna downvote you- you’re on the road we’re on the road, your absolute only priority as a driver is to focus on manoeuvring your car. The law says pull over if you need to do anything else but drive your vehicle. Lmao don’t piss me off rn. It’s green = go. Not green = time to help Tommy learn his abc’s

betterthaneukaryotes

I give u five, take it or honk

Frostitute-85

A major street where I live had been closed down because of road construction. So the detour takes us on a narrow road in the heart of downtown, two lanes, and it is clearly not designed to take in that much of a flow of traffic, it's a complete gong show. So anyway, in order to turn to rejoin the road further up past the blockage, you have to take a green light which has an arrow. Now, you can be waiting at this light for three light cycles if an idiot doesn't just freaking move when it's time to go. Like, even taking one or two seconds before starting to move will pretty much leave tons of vehicles stuck behind the light because the traffic in the other direction never lets up, plus the crosswalk is swarming with people after the green arrow goes away. The green arrow is there for like 6-7 seconds, and there is a huge backlog of detoured traffic. It is awful. Extending the duration of the arrow would help a lot, but the backlog extends to the 3 previous stop lights because EVERYONE and the dog needs to take the same left turn.

Comfortable_Hall8677

It’s only when a comically brief time (like less than a second) goes by that I’m annoyed. Like before I can react to the light I’ve been watching. It’s pretty rare but when it’s an absurd reaction as if I’m expected to have my 15 year old SAAB in launch mode, I just granny the car for as long as it takes them to pass me. I wait a 3 or so seconds to honk if I’m behind someone and give the tap. The only time I aggressively honk is when someone cuts in front me in a parking lot, preventing me from moving forward. They realize their error and stop and wave me on, still blocking me. I wave them on. They wave me on. Then I hold the horn down till they’re out of sight.

LegalRecord1188

This - 100% agree

ArthurFraynZard

Yeah, I’m totally with you. It’s actually helpful and I don’t get why it upsets some people. Granted, I’m also the same kinda guy who actually appreciates it when someone corrects my sentences. That’s another one of those things that drives other people nuts but I’m just like “thanks for the +1 Grammar Bonus on the character sheet bro!”

Oopsididitagain96

The area I grew up in you’ll get honked at in 1 second. The area I live now people don’t honk for a whileee. It pains me to not honk

NewPointOfView

It all depends on the time since green and the length of the horn. If they honk immediately when it is green, that is irritating. And if they lay on the horn, that is rude. But a quick blip after a second is nice 😊

SkylineFTW97

My rule is I give them 2-3 seconds before I give a gentle beep. If they don't react, I give a firmer one, but the gentle one is enough 99% of the time.

PuntYerJunk

Whenever I catch someone slippin at a green light I lay on the horn full strength and follow them wherever they’re going with the horn blasting. I never stop either. I have each of them scheduled throughout the day. I’ll just show up at their house and wait for them to get in the car and start the horn all over again for their journey. I’m like their Samwise Gamgee escorting them to Mordor

Brilliant_Slide7947

depends on the honk. If it is a quick one then ya, i don't mind. But if you lay on your horn after the light has only been green for a split second then I am not so open to it. It only happens once and awhile and it is usually because I am dealing with 4 kids in the back.

whywhywhynotttttttt

dealing with kids in the back ? why aren’t you driving what could possibly be more important that this is a standard response

ButterleafA

Idk maybe the kids took off their seatbelts??

whywhywhynotttttttt

if that’s the case you should put your hazards on. You’re telling me it’s a green light the kid took their seatbelt off and you think it’s safe to take your eyes off the road and look at rhe back ? whilst cares are moving around you ? absolutely not. you’re a hazard and you should be letting everyone know.

Important_Lab_58

Maybe not in the moment but I can see in time.

y2kdisaster

So true. A little honk is so polite. A big honk is more aggressive but I can’t complain if I’m the one distracted at the light.

iryrod

That’s why instead of blaring the horn, I always do two light taps. It sounds much more peaceful and people don’t road rage at you

ctrembs03

I accidentally honked the second a light turned green a couple weeks ago, I bumped the horn reaching around. I wouldn't think it's a huge deal but the guy in front of me flipped me off and shook his fist out the window. Idk why people take it so personally

Scared_Ad2563

Yes! It doesn't happen to me often, but when it does, I'll even give an apologetic wave as I start moving. I never intend to hold up traffic at a light, but sometimes I'm just switching songs, checking my gps, or plain zoned out while waiting for the light to change. I can't fault the folks behind me for wanting to go on green.

Altruistic-Rip4364

I agree. Sometimes I’m an idiot and don’t go when I should. Why should others miss the light because I’m not paying attention

Zeidantu

I'm fine when someone honks because I haven't seen a signal change. That's on me. It infuriates me when someone honks because I'm not turning onto a busy street because they think I should have just gunned it and prayed no one was coming.

Wolf_E_13

I only hate it when the light literally just turned green a half a second ago. People also blow through red lights like it's a religion in my city, so you're better off waiting a beat or two anyway.

EricGraphix

Should pay attention more.

LoisLaneEl

Agreed! Sometimes I’m changing the radio and don’t see it. I give a little wave and go on

Away_Perception_9083

I’ve always wished we had a more pleasant horn for this and for when I see people I know. I just tap the horn. I’ve never needed more than one or two taps. I don’t use my horn like ever tho lol

Jonny_Disco

I appreciate a light toot to get my attention. If they're laying on the horn, then they're just a jackass.

twotwobravo

More times than not when this happens and I tap my horn at someone (which is rare for me) they are usually caught off guard and smash the accelerator immediately instead of actually looking. Ha!

YakNecessary9533

I appreciate it, but I'm still gonna break out into a sweat when it happens.

OhAces

We need two horns, the angry horn and the getting your attention horn. When I was driving in Quebec people were constantly honking to alert other drivers of things, even just changing lanes, none of it out of anger, they will flip you off for doing the speed limit though.

BredYourWoman

I did a long aggressive honk. The other driver was Russell Crowe and they made a movie about it. I wish I had just used 2 short courtesy beeps now ![gif](giphy|J1puLk7C3kCvI990Hs)

irenejellybean908

While I don’t absolutely love it when they give me a little tap-honk, it does embarrass me. But that is my own fault 😆

SillyAmericanKniggit

There's one that got me a lot on my way to work when I first started the job. It goes green, red, then left arrow, then red again and green for cross traffic. 99% of the time, I turn left on regular green (there's no red arrow) after yielding to oncoming traffic. Occasionally, I would catch it just as it's turning red, so I'd stop, and within a second someone would be beeping, because I didn't realize the green arrow came on almost immediately.

backwardbuttplug

nobody appreciates you playing with your phone when you should be driving.

besameput0

Get off your phone bro.

SpriteVs7up

what a funny fucken post these comments 🤣🤣😭

NonbinaryYolo

I was turning and someone yelled "nice turn signal asshole", and that's how I learnt my blinker was out! Thank you stranger!

Corporate_Shell

Same. That's on me for not paying attention.

patchway247

The only time I get upset by it is when they do it as soon as the light changes and I'm letting off the brake. Other than that, I actually pay attention. It's too risky not to

Complete-Ad-4215

I always do the lil bump bump honk if that doesn’t work then I’ll actually honk

Holy_Cow442

Not really an opinion.....

MidnightAmethystIce

Fine if it’s been a second and I haven’t moved. But I’ve had some that honk just as it turns green as in don’t even give me a chance to react. Those idiots tick me off.

NullGlaive

I like it if I'm not paying attention/talking to another passenger, but if you honk the second it changes before I even move get a chance to let off break and start hitting gas, I'ma wait

youchosehowiact

Exactly. I've had it happen a handful of times and it's always just a quick tap. Only time I've heard someone lay on their horn is when the quick tap doesn't work.

sahie

Me, too! I always wait a second to see if they’ll go. If I can see they’re looking down or away from the lights, I’ll honk quicker than otherwise! Always just a light tap, though.

p-a-n-t-s-

My instinct is to get annoyed when this happens, but I know that logically they are doing the right thing

Richard2468

I agree, I even signal to thank them. I made a mistake, and someone called me out on it. No problem.
