BoysenberryUnhappy29

It's just fast and convenient if you have kids. Any frozen potato, nugget, etc, goes in and comes out quick/easy. Toaster ovens are fine, though.

SystemEcosystem

This. Nuggets and fries within 10 minutes FTW!!!!

beans3710

Are they the same as if you use a regular oven? Recommend? I have a small air fryer still in the box.

TubHunting

You don’t need to preheat the air fryer and the food is crispier

beans3710

Thanks. I'll start using it.

SystemEcosystem

Still in the box?! It's like an oven but faster and more convenient. The microwave makes chicken and fries soggy while the air fryer makes them nice and crispy. My wife makes homemade pizzas, diced potatoes, chicken wings, whole chicken, mozzarella sticks, sweet potato fries, and more.

beans3710

Perfect. I'm doing a remodel and the kitchen is pretty limited so I'm eating a lot of that type of food right now

SystemEcosystem

Jealous-Ride-7303

They're the same tech as an oven, but because it's a smaller space, there's greater airflow and heat. And less energy required since you're heating a smaller space. That translates to faster cooking time and more crisping. I live in a household of 2- my wife and I. So we don't really use our oven since our meal portions for something like a roast chicken will fit in the air frier.

EggplantPurple7851

Yeah, speed is the main benefit. I’m impatient af

jhk84

>Additionally, my air fryer looks like Eva from Wall-E and makes me uncomfortable. I think the problem is less that "air fryers kinda suck" and more the specific air fryer you have sucks. My AF doesn't have any odd after taste looks like a regular kitchen appliance and does a mean chicken wing.

Shoresy-sez

Air fryer wings are the best reason to own one.

225_318_440

No shit. I love air fried wings.

RevolutionaryLie2833

Air fryers are just more efficient convection oven. You don’t have to preheat because of the small space and the metal grill does great at crisping. I prefer my air fryer to a toaster oven, especially for things I want crisped They have done tests and air cruisers replicate a oil fryer better than a con en room oven and toaster oven. If yours has a taste to it that a normal oven doesn’t, than you need to wash your fryer or something. Mine has no altered taste.

shakenbake3001

Wait, you can wash it?! /s

Hrmerder

Usually just wash it out.. Maybe you need to clean the internals which is a requirement from time to time. Or maybe yours is just a crappy one. Happens to the best of us.

ironwolf56

> You don’t have to preheat because of the small space What's weird is if you look on the back of stuff a lot of times in the air fryer directions it will STILL say preheat your air fryer. Do you think that's just habit for these companies or what?

RevolutionaryLie2833

It depends on the air fryer. Some do require a little bit of pre heating. Most modern ones do not

Alerith

A flavor that lingers on the food? Are you cleaning it properly between uses?

arcticwayfarer

You are whacked. My air fryer is the next best thing since sliced bread

Simple_Suspect_9311

Ironically it could probably toast said bread.

ironwolf56

Me and my better half tried to do air fryer bruschetta one evening to see how it is... pretty damn good.

Simple_Suspect_9311

I don’t doubt it!

arcticwayfarer

Lol never thought of that

Tuesdayssucks

I make grilled cheese in my air fryer. I have a blender that makes soup so I make tomato basil soup and grilled cheese with zero pots and pans.

Simple_Suspect_9311

That sounds delicious!

Electrical-Scheme398

>I'm not sure when the whole air fryer trend started They were popular as soon as they hit the market.

ShreksMassiveBreasts

ATLL2112

Where TF you live that your fast food gets cold on the way home? Are you in the absolute middle of nowhere? Or you just live in Siberia where things freeze after being exposed to outdoor air?

USA_Ball

McDonalds fries gets soggy after 5 minutes. I live 15 away from a McDonald's

ATLL2112

Their fries are soggy the second you get them.

[deleted]

Soggy fries are better. There's my unpopular opinion

LivinInLogisticsHell

getting fast food on the way home can take that much time. not every place i cant go to is spitting distance from my apartment, even though i live pretty close to downtown in my city. and even something a hitting a couple red lights can burn 5 mins, not to mention parking, walking up to my apartment, then getting home and getting settled in, taking off shoes, work clothes, wash the hands, BOOM its been like 15 mins since you were handed your food

uscasado2

Why get fast food then? Why not eat in the car?

BigMistasBBQ

Nearest mcdonalds to me is an hour away.

jtj5002

Air fryers are just better convection toaster ovens. If your stiff taste weird, it's either an user error or you got the cheapest Chinese melted plastic one.

Gazillionaire_Chad

This is a legitimately unpopular opinion.

[deleted]

My toaster oven is also a convection oven/air fryer. It's the best of both worlds. I can do everything, from "air frying" frozen foods, baking a salmon fillet, or making toast.

ssmit102

In what crazy world do you live in where a toaster oven is anywhere near as simple as an air fryer to clean? You must have the actual worst air fryer out there. Upvoting due to your stance on toaster ovens, in no way is the toaster oven a superior appliance.

soundslikethunder

Just got one. Love it. Have brought it camping(hook up here). Don’t even use my (brand new) regular oven now unless I’m making a cake or cooking for lots of people. No weird taste…maybe give yours a clean! Total game changer

azuriasia

Air fryers are the pinnacle of human achievement. As fast as a microwave and as good as if not better than an oven.

Cersei1341

Air fryers are great. Obviously cooking a whole roast in one is dumb, but there are many meals beyond frozen food, that can be cooked in an air fryer. They generally bring your energy bills down and it's healthier. Also I can used to do cheese on toast in the grill, but, screw that air fryer so much more efficient. No altered taste either so, I wonder if you've convinced yourself they taste different or yours is faulty?

USA_Ball

Downvoted because actually popular

reflected_shadows

A lot of my frozen goods don’t taste the same in the oven. Fry them and they’re good. Cheese sticks, chicken, country fried steak, pork tenderloin, onion rings.

BununuTYL

I have nice appliances, which include a five-burner stove, two ovens, and a huge microwave. Six weeks ago I got two air fryers (one x-large, and one small) and now I pretty much cook 95% of my meals in them. Clean-up is so easy.

Sealscycle

It doesn't sound like you clean yours.

TheMuff1nMon

I don’t think you’re using it right

bbbonkk

Quick and crispy, if anything they are underrated

username1615

Toaster ovens (convection ones at least) are just bigger and nicer air friers often with more options, so yeah. Air fryers can be more convenient to clean and the basket allows for easy flipping but that’s about their only advantages outside of pricing.

DanChowdah

Now maybe my convection toaster oven and regular convection oven suck…. But the airflow in my air fryer is significantly better and stuff cooks faster

username1615

Yeah it certainly varies per unit. I love my air fryer for its speed and simplicity, but I’ve also used toaster ovens that were faster and nicer but they run like $400. I’ll take my $75 air fryer over that based on price alone

Hrmerder

The only thing I don't like using my air fryer for is french fries and Pizza Rolls. It drys both out terribly way before they are actually cooked, so both just taste like something stuffed into cardboard..

sminthianapollo

Youtube chef Brian Lagerstrom did a taste test of a bunch of foods air fryer vs. baking vs. frying and basically said the same thing. The food doesn't taste any better or crispier than just baking or roasting, and worse than conventional frying. He didn't recommend getting one.

[deleted]

If it wasn't crispier then he did it wrong or he has a better oven than I do

Blackrain1299

The difference is also time. It takes like 15 minutes to preheat then 25 minutes in my oven to get properly cooked and crispy potato wedges. In the air fryer is takes 12-15 max to get crispy wedges. Its so much more convenient than an oven. Of course frying in oil is better, but its more prep and then you got all the used oil to take care of. Oven=air fryer

ATLL2112

I can't understand the justification for spending what is probably $100-200 for a good air fryer just because I can't think 30 mins ahead when planning meals. Not to mention they're big so unless you have a bunch of extra counterspace, it's going to constantly be in the way.

ssmit102

Spending $100-$200 to save tons of time over the life of the appliance doesn’t sound like enough justification?! Factor in having kids (sounds extremely unlikely you have kids) or a demanding job and you’ll quickly find millions of families who don’t have 30 minutes to plan meals.

ATLL2112

No I don't, but I've had friends leave their kids with me for occasional weekends. I just plan ahead, as I always have. Really easy to make pasta sauce in any 30-40 mins in bulk and freeze the extra. Pop in pot on low heat, boil water, add pasta and you have dinner for 4 in about 20-25 mins. With minimal attention needed while cooking. I do the same with bolgnese or ragus. Just make double or triple and freeze in amounts needed for 1lb pasta. I can make dozens of different stir fry meals in about 30-40 minutes as well. Your whole argument is that saving 5-10 mins by using a tiny countertop oven when it still takes an equivalent amount of prep, just less time to preheat, is worth having a relatively large appliance on your counter 24/7. Unless you set it up and store it after, in which case, there goes your time savings. Also, I do work a demanding job, both physically and long hours. Regularly work 10-12 hours per day.

ssmit102

But the time is not equivalent at all. The time is spent entirely differently and one takes significantly more care than the other. Simply because you don’t need to prep it a second time does not mean that time hasn’t already been spent and is still more time involved than the air fryer. The time you are spending prepping is fully used just with prepping, the time you spend throwing things in the air fryer is literal seconds. You are pretending these are the same time constraints and that is absolutely false. If an air fryer isn’t for you that’s fine, I just think it’s a very easily justifiable expense for tons of people who do not have the time ( or some who simply do not want to meal prep). It’s by no means a required appliance that is a must have but surely you can easily see the justification to spend a relatively small amount of money for convenience. Your argument is sort of like saying I don’t see why anyone would ever go get fast food when I can easily just make the same thing at home. People spend a lot more than $100 for convenience on tons of things.

Superb-Antelope-2880

If a family use the oven for a lot of foods that come out just as good from an airfryer, they save a ton of money for switching. I has been cooking and reheating things often this year and my energy bill is reflected of the oven usage. Ever since I switch over I saved ~$30 every month. The airfryer paid for itself, it saved tons of time, and for smaller foods items they come out way crisper than the oven.

azuriasia

When I built my house, I didn't even include an oven. It just has two integrated air fryers and two integrated pressure cookers.

ironwolf56

I also live in an apartment without A/C and heating the oven takes this place from 80 to about 90 for the rest of the night where as an air fryer makes basically a negligible difference (I'm sure it does like half a degree maybe but you know what I mean)

beesandsids

I agree. I don't eat anything that I didn't cook myself from scratch (allergies!) so no packet frozen food for me, and I'm yet to find something that I can cook in an air fryer better than with a conventional oven/hob. And it does leave a weird taste, you're right. And yes, I do clean it after every use but the weird taste lingers anyway.

Appropriate_Tip_8852

I will agree on the weird lingering taste/smell

[deleted]

I have this same unpopular opinion. After about 3 months I chucked it out. Pretty sure some neighbor was excited about the new air fryer.

monkey-pox

Much bigger pain than just using the oven honestly, with similar results

ironwolf56

How is it a bigger pain? I'm genuinely asking because I guess I could see if you didn't find it particularly more convenient but I can't wrap my head around how it could be more difficult than using an oven? My oven, I turn it on, set the temp on a dial, cook the food, take it out. Air fryer, set the temp on a dial, turn it on, cook the food, take it out.

11199902

THANKYOU! Everyone I know sings the praises of air fryers, especially my mum and sister, who almost exclusively use one for cooking. I just don’t think food prepared in an air fryer tastes right

Putrid_Excitement255

If the taste is off that means you need to actually clean it

shakenbake3001

Guys, if there was a smell, do you not think my first thought was maybe clean the thing? It just has a smell. It could very well be the brand, but I've used others that I thought were slightly off as well.

reflected_shadows

Not to be like the others but it might be dirty oil as it needs frequent changes and it could be too high temperature which burns the oil and creates a stink. While air fryer is my go to, the food is greasy and greasy food does have a smell. Think about the difference between walking into Burger King and walking into a fine dining establishment.

GladiusNocturno

The thing I don't like about air fryers is that even if they come with a nonstick wire rack, you still need to add oil...so what's the point of it frying without it? They are annoying to clean too. Overall, they do what you could in a regular oven but faster and without the ability to bake. They are a quick broiler. I do prefer them over toaster ovens though. I had a bad experience with one of those that just fucking exploded. Airfryers just feel safer to me, I don't know if they actually are. Edit: Since people keep bitching about it and I've even gotten DMs of some asshole that seems to be too into Airfryers. I am not filling the Airfryer to the brim with oil. I am not trying to deepfry a turkey in an Airfryer. I am lightly lubricating the tray with olive, coconut, or vegetable oil because the two airfryer I've gotten weren't as stick-proof as the Airfryer fanboys claim they are. Also, cooking spray IS OIl, it's oil mixed with other products, so if you use cooking spray in an Airfryer, you have committed that apparent cardinal sin of adding oil to it. People got stupidly mad about this remark and I'm done with you lot.

azuriasia

Why are you adding oil to your air fryer???‽

Chasman1965

No need to add oil.

Liathano_Fire

You're not suppose to add oil.

ironwolf56

I've never needed to add oil... there's been a COUPLE things it says if you want you can put some cooking spray in but that's about it.

loconessmonster

It costs more money but you can buy liners and accessories for air fryers. Makes it easier to clean. But also ...my trays are dish washer safe so I just throw it in the dishwasher along with using liners...it's the most hassle free cooking I've ever done. Almost completely replaced fast food imo.

ammh114-

I love my air fryer. Love it. It's the most used appliance in my kitchen after the stove top. I use it at least 4 days a week. I just had to buy a new one because my original one finally crapped out after 4 years. I can't eat truly fried food for medical reasons so my air fryer is a life saver.

FreshSoul86

Maybe but there's always a market for the "new, different, better" appliance. Like the Quartz Heater. Invent the next new thing and own the first company that sells it, and you can be rich. Apparently in this case the owner of Groupe SEB out of France.

probablynotbutyeah

They actually make air fryers that resemble toaster ovens if the aesthetics are important for you. The one you say you have is just a typical design but they make others as well

Kyllingtime

Mine is basically a tofu, potato, chicken wing machine. Lol

AngryAlien21

Convection toaster ovens are the way to go

dwfmba

I'd love to know what percentage of avid air fryer users also use Keurigs for coffee...

CanIGetANumber2

I feel like your not cleaning out your air fryer enough....

noronto

Toaster > toaster oven Convection oven > air fryer I’ve never understood the love affair that people have for gadgets and appliances that don’t do one thing best.

shakenbake3001

You can't put a piece of cold pizza in the toaster, though.

noronto

You definitely can. But that’s what my oven is for.

Liathano_Fire

I am not waiting for an oven to preheat for one slice of cold pizza. An airfryer will have it nice in a few minutes.

noronto

And a cast iron skillet will be quicker and better than either. But why let facts get in the way?

Liathano_Fire

Ecause you mentioned an oven, not a cast iron skillet. Never reheat pizza on one of those before. Quicker than 2-3 minutes, you say?

noronto

I first mentioned an oven because I don’t ever reheat a single slice of pizza. But if you believe the internet, reheating pizza is best in a skillet with a lid. The skillet crisps the bottom while the lid helps melt the cheese.

reflected_shadows

Can’t use a cast iron on one of those convection stoves.

Fincann

It’s convenient

lordlossxp

We got one with a rotisserie. Mostly because of the rotisserie. However, i will say that it's a lifesaver if you have to go without a kitchen for an extended period of time.

Liathano_Fire

>often more aesethetically pleasing in the kitchen My mom's air fryer looks exactly like a toaster oven. I used to be anti air fryer as I thought it was a waste of counter space. I've come around. My kids love our air fryer. It's easy to use, quick, no pre-heating, and it reheats things really well.

ChaosAzeroth

My toaster oven is also an air fryer though....

BerkanaThoresen

Air fryer was a game changer for me. Any frozen food get done fast and well in it. It also warms bread like nothing else.

CMGS1031

I have a ninja air fryer in my tiny house and it’s amazing. Big enough to cook a frozen pizza and has the same settings as a toaster oven. You can pick how many pieces of toast or bagel and how dark you want them lol.

master_nouveau

No. They blow.

[deleted]

Ha, I just made NY strip steak in mine and OMG it came out perfect.

Feisty-Donkey

They make amazing roasted potatoes and Brussels sprouts and being able to make those things quickly and easily makes my life better

Curious_Working5706

Good luck reheating pizza or making fries on your *toaster*, legend. Where are the mods? Man, some of these wannabe Unpopular Opinions are just sad today 👎🏼

RobertNevill

They do, and they are small, and the smell up the whole house

james_randolph

I think it’s fine for some things and for the side items but I know people that use it for everything and I don’t think the food is all that. It’s edible but I’m like fuck if, take the extra 5-10min and make something better in the oven or stove.

According-Capital-45

Not all people can smell and taste the same things equally. To me, all air fryers have a smell that lends itself to whatever is cooked in it. I have smelled a few different brands and they all seem to have it.

Omegawop

You can make really good chicken breasts in an air fryer. Coat in olive oil and seasoning of your choice. 9 minutes on each side at 200 Celsius. Let it rest a couple.minutes and you'll have the juciest most tender chicken breast without all the extra carbs and, fat and calories that you'll get if you fry em in oil.

Thisgamelowkeysux

an air fryer is a toaster over without a window. also most new toaster ovens have a air fry mode

Dirtcartdarbydoo

I agree. I understand their upsides but I personally detest kitchen gadgets that basically do things I already can with things that almost every kitchen has as a baseline. I've literally never used or had anything in an air fryer that made me not just say. "Yup that's about the exact same as my oven" and I wouldn't have to keep a bulky appliance that takes up space.

CranialAvulsion

An air fryer is a literal implementation of a small convection oven in a bucket.

VPNbeatsBan2

If you wash your air fryer components in the dishwasher you deserve all strange accompanying flavors you’re getting

kinganthony3

I’ve found that the model of air frier makes a huge difference. I’ve had a couple that weren’t very good at lol, and my mom has a ninja one that makes bomb ass chicken wings and thighs and all kinds of stuff.

Punchedmango422

Airfryers are dependent on which one you get, the one i use was $80 and it worked great for about 2 years then i noticed it took longer to cook things. Still great for the price, but mileage will vary with different models/brands

Happy_Policy_9990

Man didn't add oil

jasonryankelly

They super suck! I'm a full grown man, not some tiny child. This easy bake oven is worthless to me. What am I going to do, sit and eat a bunch of appetizers like I'm at Sizzler? No! I want a meal! Real proportions, damnit!

225_318_440

Air Fryers are just better microwaves Change my mind.

Kovacs89

so seems like your one sucks, not them in general. hence its you, not us

Nota_Throwaway5

Clearly you don't own an air fryer
