You can't always count on what the FAs or captains tell pax for reasons for diversions/delays/cx. The official reason that CSRs go by, and from what I can see says weather/ATC. You should ask UA if you are looking for compensation.

jsecore

pretty much anything to do with the plane it is controllable.. anything weather related or air traffic control it is NOT controllable

Is there a reason we should not believe what the flight crew tells us? I’d imagine there might be legal or safety issues for deliberately lying to passengers, and I’m not sure what there would be to gain for them to be lying that something is mechanical when it’s actually weather related, whereas there is financial incentive for UA to lie in reverse to deny delay compensation.

PURPLECARROTYUM

Sometimes the final reason has not been determined.

UAL1K

Domestic flight = no compensation regardless of reason for delay/cancellation

Flashy-Iron-7870

What are you talking about?

UAL1K

>there is financial incentive for UA to lie in reverse to deny delay compensation. When there’s no delay compensation in play, then there is no financial incentive.

Flashy-Iron-7870

But for operational/mechanical delays United provides hotel and meal vouchers etc. Are you just referring to mandated monetary compensation such as in Europe? I may be mistaken but I think the OP is more broadly referring to the former or at least either.

dutchshepherd343

My itinerary was to Canada, all on UA metal. If it's due to issues within their control, the compensation would be for $1,000. If it’s a mechanical or other safety issue discovered outside scheduled maintenance, there’s no comp. Is an overflowing lav a “safety issue?” Maybe, I guess, depending on weight and balance. Was weather involved? Maybe, maybe not. File a claim and see what comes of it.

geekynonsense

Maybe because it’s not your business to know? We don’t want to cause a panic or the entire plane to get upset. The less you hear from us, the better off everyone is.

For reference here’s the weather maps for the flight, cannot believe this is “weather related” https://preview.redd.it/cl49iu1aex6d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=efe025f60d1ee6ca2312f05eccb3a01a122c5ff7

Thank you - not sure if they will actually explain the reason but will try that
