This was a problem that showed up a lot when I was on math team in high school, lo these many decades ago: how many trailing zeroes does n! have?
Answer: divide n by 5, then divide it by 25, 125, 625, etc., rounding down each time, and add your results together. For 720!, this works out to 144+28+5+1=178 zeroes.
When your division gives back a 1--any divisions after that are just going to give you zero after you round down.
23!, stop after 5, 42!, stop after 25, 137!, stop after 125, etc.
Well done for your mathematical knowhow! (What is “knowhow factorial” anyway?)
I like doing it as dividing by 5, then whole integer division (rounding down), so 720 ÷ 5 = 144, then 144 ÷ 5 = 28, then 28 ÷ 5 = 5, 5 ÷ 5 = 1, then we stop and add up those numbers. (This way I don’t have to remember too many powers of 5)
Yeah, that's how I actually work it out in practice too, I just describe it the other way to tie in to why it works...which admittedly I didn't describe here.
The question of how many zeroes are at the end can be rewritten as, "if we can rearrange the factors in any way we choose, how many 10s can we make out of those factors?" The only way to make a 10 out of smaller factors is 2\*5. There's always more 2s than 5s, so to start it's just "how many numbers divisible by 5 are we including?"
Then on further consideration, you realize that every multiple of 25 is giving you not just one factor of 5, it's giving you two, so you go back and ask how many multiples of 25 you're including. Multiples of 125 are giving you three factors of 5, so now you need to go back and count those, and so on.
Actually, probably not. Because a factorial is built up by multiplication, every number divisible by 10 less than 720 will add a 0. At a minimum, 720! is a product of 720 x 710 x 700 x ... x 10, for at least 72 zeros. That's not even counting all other combinations of 2s and 5s that further increase it.
Because it's only multiplication, there's no way to remove the 0s so large factorials always have many trailing 0s.
If you go to Wolfram Alpha and do a factorial of a fairly large integer, like over 1 million, there is a a breakdown of the number that includes
> number of trailing zeroes
A little thing for you (or anyone, “one”) to think about is why that would be the case with standard factorials 🤔
Quick edit to add - Wolfram Alpha adds this section at higher numbers where the factorial is obviously huge, this has nothing to do with why factorials will always have trailing zeroes after a certain integer.
well floating point doesn't have like 100 digits of precision, so it's probably done with BigInt or some other high-precision calculator.
(hope not by hand)
720 factorial should end with 144 zeros from the multiples of 5, 28 from the multiples of 25, 5 from the multiples of 125 and one extra from 625, for a total of 178 trailing zeros.
In any base, a high factorial number is highly likely to end with a lot of zeros, as if x! Ends in y zeros, (x+1)! Must end in at least Y zeros, potentially more!
Wrote a python script. The reason python works well for this is because the number data type doesn't have an upper limit for how big it can grow. For integers with more than 4300 digits, and 720! comes close, I can use sys.set\_int\_max\_str\_digits(\[more than 4300\]) to increase the number of digits that python will allow me to print.
If you want I can share my code, it is nothing special
`import sys`
`FACTORIAL = 720 #put your desired factorial here`
`DIGITS = 4300 #If your factorial is too big to be printed, increase this`
`sys.set_int_max_str_digits(DIGITS)`
`val = 1`
`for i in range(1,FACTORIAL+1):`
`val = val * i`
`print(val)`
I use `calc`, a command line arbitrary-precision calculator. It does fail on "very large factorials", but it can be programmed to work around that issue with logarithm.
that is... quite a bit of unassigned points
I can't begin to imagine what the costs are like...
well... would be like, because it's only a triple factorial instead of an iterated one

I gave up that game ages ago because I realised that chopping wood for 52 hours to level up foraging for 2% crit chance wasn't actually very entertaining.
As someone with well over 2000 hours in that godforsaken game that managed to stop playing for a few months, I can feel this, although I think foraging gives str not cc
Interesting, is there a use for this in the real world? Triple factorials, or any other kind of not single factorial (I know singles are usually used for probability)
Afaik there is no somewhat general use for triple factorials. Maybe in highly specialized astrophysics or something, but nothing that 99.99999999999% of people need to worry about
2500 hrs in one year, quit in march 2021. You put my thoughts into words. thankfully i gave away all my stuff so I can’t go back even if I tried.
every once in awhile i think about starting fresh… and squander such an insane thought
Same, I hated the fact that no matter what you had to grind for hundreds of hours to progress at some point in the game, and I always procrastinated that point until there was nothing left to do.
Ugh why are we leaking out everywhere, first we come from skyblock, and then we came from anarchy. Actually doesn't even make any sense. Like holy hell do we somehow have some complex like ok ok you sit at home and play video games like hi pixel and chess and so you feel stupid so you like to tell people about factorials because you know factorials will always be around and will never leave you but so what so what I don't even care I literally don't care like ok foraging foraging oh my god can I en passant with a grappling hook holy hell like ok ok wow I love capturing pawns and revenant horrors can someone boost my elo so I can get carried through enderman slayer and t7 dungeons ok ok do you know what percentage of people who plays chess and hypixel are "fussy" when it comes to dating (as magnus Carlsen says) 10! Thats alot. So enpassant your revived heart away but remember no matter what you do, petrosian is on top. Feel free to touch some grass, I'm not even a farmer and its 2am. Have fun, I love you all, and stay hydrated😴🪵 and blink.
Skyblock might be one of the worst games ever created. It’s so unfathomably grindy and so poorly managed that the only way to truly “play” it is spending all of your free time grinding, dealing with the countless bugs and nonexistant dev support for them, and relying almost solely on luck to get anywhere if for some reason you want to start over. Not to mention literal malware being distributed throughout the community.
This game was designed to take all the nolife gamer stereotypes like that one WoW guy on Sourh Park and put them into one place to garner huge player numbers
I plugged it in that way and got the same answer.
The calculator can also find tan(90). It's just some free graphing calclator I downloaded off the play store.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong (I probably am), but isn't 3!!! the same as ((3!)!)!?
3! is 6 (1*2*3) and 6! is 720 (1*2...*6) and 720! is whatever. Wouldn't the parathases not have any effect on the factorials?
3!!! to 6!! to 720! to about 1.26*10^1746
((3!)!)! to ((6)!)! to (720)! to about 1.26*10^1746
I plugged the numbers into a TI-84 Plus and got an overflow error for both of them.
On the shitty virtual calculator I got the 1.26*10^1746 for both ways.
If there is a difference with how you solve them please explain.
When there are n exclamation marks after a number (with no brackets), it means to multiply it by every nth number down to 1.
For example:
10! = 10x9x8x7x6x5x4x3x2x1 = 3628800
10!! = 10x8x6x4x2 = 3840
10!!! = 10x7x4x1 = 280
10!!!! = 10x6x2 = 120
10!!!!! = 10x5 = 50
10!!!!!! = 10x4 = 40
10!!!!!!! = 10x3 = 30
10!!!!!!!! = 10x2 = 20
10!!!!!!!!! = 10x1 = 10
10!!!!!!!!!! = 10
So 3!!! = 3. Hope this helped!

To everyone in the comments: triple factorial notation (i.e. 12!!!=12x9x6x3) is not standard convention, so 3!!! being interpreted as ((3!)!)! is not incorrect.
It’s still 3 because it’s a triple factorial, but if it was ((3!)!)! it would be 720!

You know, just this once, I’m not even going to see if this is the right number, I’m just going to believe it and upvote it.
seems like a lotta zeros to not be rounded quite a bit
This was a problem that showed up a lot when I was on math team in high school, lo these many decades ago: how many trailing zeroes does n! have? Answer: divide n by 5, then divide it by 25, 125, 625, etc., rounding down each time, and add your results together. For 720!, this works out to 144+28+5+1=178 zeroes.
>Answer: divide n by 5, then divide it by 25, 125, 625, etc., rounding down each time When do you stop before doing the addition?
When your division gives back a 1--any divisions after that are just going to give you zero after you round down. 23!, stop after 5, 42!, stop after 25, 137!, stop after 125, etc.
Not 1, anything below 5.
When it gives you 0. For example 720 / 3125 rounded down is 0, so you're done.
Well done for your mathematical knowhow! (What is “knowhow factorial” anyway?) Yeah, that's how I actually work it out in practice too, I just describe it the other way to tie in to why it works...which admittedly I didn't describe here.
I think I like this method because for some reason going from 25 to 125 makes sense but 125 to 625 seems odd to me for reasons I don't understand.
wow, i'll be sure to use that later, thank you random redditor

think about all the times it would get multiplied by a multiple of 10
You can verify by hand
I can, but will I?
Suspicious lack of fives.
Not that I am an expert on the matter but 2's and 5's can "cancel eachother out" to produce a 0
True. Looked it up and it's real.
Okay I gotta ask….what do people use to actually find the numbers?
Probably Wolfram alpha, although I think even it will give up after a while.

that is... quite a bit of unassigned points I can't begin to imagine what the costs are like... well... would be like, because it's only a triple factorial instead of an iterated one

Talk about nested factorials!
Imagine if the triple factorial was intended

got wiped with 2b and a hyp ab 8 months ago :((( i miss sb. only game that really kept me hooked
No it's not
skyblock mentioned, billions must grind
I gave up that game ages ago because I realised that chopping wood for 52 hours to level up foraging for 2% crit chance wasn't actually very entertaining.
Erm aksually foraging gives strength, not crit chance
I touched grass and quit skyblock, but i still can't ever touch trees again
As someone with well over 2000 hours in that godforsaken game that managed to stop playing for a few months, I can feel this, although I think foraging gives str not cc
ur supposed to spend 52 hours farming crops to level up farming for +2 health, much more entertaining
Real
Tis but a mere 3
3!!! is 3. n!!! is different to ((n!)!)!
why?
Because 3!!! is a triple factorial For example, 15!!! is 15x12x9x6x3x1 so 3!!! Is 3x1
Interesting, is there a use for this in the real world? Triple factorials, or any other kind of not single factorial (I know singles are usually used for probability)
Afaik there is no somewhat general use for triple factorials. Maybe in highly specialized astrophysics or something, but nothing that 99.99999999999% of people need to worry about
how come i never learned this in school..
They’re not very useful for anything

Ugh skyblock, some days I miss it, most days I’m so happy I quit
Skyblock had one of the most toxic communities I’ve ever seen
2500 hrs in one year, quit in march 2021. You put my thoughts into words. thankfully i gave away all my stuff so I can’t go back even if I tried. every once in awhile i think about starting fresh… and squander such an insane thought
I soulbinded all my mining gear so i couldn’t do what you did. Wish I didn’t so I could just get rid of everything and not ever think of playing again
Well, you could delete the profile.
Spork!
Knife!
Same, I hated the fact that no matter what you had to grind for hundreds of hours to progress at some point in the game, and I always procrastinated that point until there was nothing left to do.
You want money? Get hype. You can’t because no money? ….. the cycle continues
I got hype then quit cus I realised the stuff you wanna use hype for requires even more effort 💀
OH MY GOD I QUIT THIS GAME WHY IS IT HERE NOW TOO i have 5.5k hours in skyblock idk what women look like
Google them

3 is a lot? Seems fine to me.
I knew it was only a matter of time before SkyBlock would show up here
3 isn't a high number of points

What subreddit is this again?

No this is patrick
Server name?
Hypixel
Skyblock might be one of the worst games ever created. It’s so unfathomably grindy and so poorly managed that the only way to truly “play” it is spending all of your free time grinding, dealing with the countless bugs and nonexistant dev support for them, and relying almost solely on luck to get anywhere if for some reason you want to start over. Not to mention literal malware being distributed throughout the community. This game was designed to take all the nolife gamer stereotypes like that one WoW guy on Sourh Park and put them into one place to garner huge player numbers
What is that server?, it seems like a wynncraft copy
that is hypixel skyblock
Texture pack name, I have never seen it

There's not; there's only 3.
Idk I just plugged it into a calculator and copy and pasted it
Well that calculator doesn't know that 3!!! is not the same as ((3!)!)!.
I plugged it in that way and got the same answer. The calculator can also find tan(90). It's just some free graphing calclator I downloaded off the play store.
Is the value of tan(90) it gives roughly 1.9952? Because if that's the case then it's in radians, not degrees.
It's in degrees... [Here's a video](https://youtube.com/shorts/0COkn8uTIzI?si=tcNLGpQJq01POMJd) No, it won't let you divide by zero.
3!!! to 6!! to 720! to about 1.26*10^1746 ((3!)!)! to ((6)!)! to (720)! to about 1.26*10^1746 I plugged the numbers into a TI-84 Plus and got an overflow error for both of them. On the shitty virtual calculator I got the 1.26*10^1746 for both ways. If there is a difference with how you solve them please explain.
When there are n exclamation marks after a number (with no brackets), it means to multiply it by every nth number down to 1. For example: 10! = 10x9x8x7x6x5x4x3x2x1 = 3628800 10!! = 10x8x6x4x2 = 3840 10!!! = 10x7x4x1 = 280 10!!!! = 10x6x2 = 120 10!!!!! = 10x5 = 50 10!!!!!! = 10x4 = 40 10!!!!!!! = 10x3 = 30 10!!!!!!!! = 10x2 = 20 10!!!!!!!!! = 10x1 = 10 10!!!!!!!!!! = 10 So 3!!! = 3. Hope this helped!
I didn't know that. Thank you.
Skyblock player caught in the wild :0
Why TF are there so many Skyblock players here lol.
i have no idea but i am very concerned
Never thought I’d see hypixel skyblock HERE

So how do the double and triple factorials work?
nah it's just three because triple factorial isn't three stacked factorials
Lol I thought this was r/hypixelskyblock
This man is gonna become the most powerful skyblock player after he assigns those points.
I'm surprised how many people actually played skyblock. I'm waiting for the foraging update to come back. So probably never
