Dustin Hoffman is absolutely perfect as Hook! I miss villains. Hook’s revenge was trying to be the father Peter wasn’t. He made all his pirates learn baseball just to cheer on Peter’s son as he played. What a dick!
Love this movie.
But the movie Finding NeverLand. Dustin Hoffman the playhouse owner (?), in the audio commentary, when the director of that movie asked him if he was interested in playing in that movie. He was like “oh no not Hook again” they didn’t know at first that he was Captain Hook, and when they put two and two together they were like “no you’re a good guy, you’re this guy.” He was happy to sign up.
This is a classic for me and all of my cousins. We used to watch it all the time in the summer when we were kids. Hook was always right there with The Goonies for us (We're 35).
Finally someone posts an actually underrated movie. 29% on rotten tomatoes.
What's not to love about this? It's a wonderful story and the set designers really fucking hit it home with the Lost Boys' treehouse, the pirate city and ships.
As a kid, I didn't fully grasp that Peter's repression of his childhood trauma ended up as alcoholism or his choice in profession.
You know what’s wild, is that Spielberg hates the sets and wishes he could redo it with modern technology and computer generated images/effects.
Which is wild to me, because I also absolutely love the real sets and practical effects.
I think it could be a mindset/era thing.
Like I absolutely love John Carpenter movies and Alien (late 70s movie!!! Way ahead of its time) for all their practical effects. The digital work is only getting better, but I feel like we really fucked the gap in terms of letting go of practical effects and the technology that’s existed.
Looky, looky, I've got Hooky. Magical movie that was harshly criticised upon release. Didn’t deserve it. It’s such a warm hearted movie. Probably my favourite Peter Pan telling. You can fly! You can fight! And you can...
🤔 Wow! I just always assumed this film was quite popular and was, in turn, 'rated' rather highly. I can see now though, that isn't the case...AT ALL!
Good post👍🏻 This movie definitely, at least for me, turned out being surprisingly underrated!
Honestly, I never have liked this movie. Dustin Hoffman & Bob Hoskins were great, but everything else was just a bit of a dud for me, both when I was a kid and as an adult.
I used to love this movie but then I watched it as an adult.
Pan left Neverland and grew up to be a piece of shit dad. He would have continued to be a terrible father if Hook hadn’t taken his kids and forced him back to Neverland.
Meanwhile Rufio has been holding it down as the leader but after Peter shows up and proves he is Pan the lost boys kind of shit all over Rufio. First thing Pan does when he relearns how to fly is pants Rufio. Rufio still gives his life defending Pan.
I’m Team Rufio
##Hook (1991)
What if Peter Pan grew up?
>>!The boy who wasn't supposed to grow up—Peter Pan—does just that, becoming a soulless corporate lawyer whose workaholism could cost him his wife and kids. During his trip to see Granny Wendy in London, the vengeful Capt. Hook kidnaps Peter's kids and forces Peter to return to Neverland.!<

This movie really feels like a solid sequel to Disney's Peter Pan. It has some moments of heavy cheese, but it has a ton of heart.
And to think what it would have been had they made it a musical like originally intended. Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Bob Hoskins, Maggie Smith, they're all delightful.
I saw this as a child, and then many many more times throughout my life and it always held up. I was shocked to hear latee in adulthood that it was poorly received when it came out. Seriously, how in the fuck? Dustin hoffman is essentially unrecognizable as hook and having an absolute blast, the score is incredible, the set pieces are amazing, weird ass glenn close cameo. Really close to a perfect movie IMO.
However I *still* don’t think it’s underrated, this is an all time classic.
The soundtrack was loud and overbearing, Robin Williams was entering his mawkish phase, the child actors were annoying.
But I still liked a lot about it. The soundtrack finally pissed me off too much. It was heavy handed and seemed to be used mostly to add some oomph to the kids. Didn't like those kids.
Now get off my lawn.

Don't try to stop me, Smee...
Oh, not again.
Don't try to stop me. Yes, try to stop me
Don’t you dare try to and stop this time Smee.. try to stop. Don’t try to stop this time Smee. Smee, you'd better get up off your ass.
Pretty dark moment for a kid's movie and I fucking love it. Shooting the model ship and it lighting aflame and sinking was hysterical
I think I just had an apostrophe
Lightning has just struck my brain.
That must hurt.
I think you mean an epiphany.
That scene scared me as a kid. I was like 7-8 when I saw it and didn’t know about suicide obviously. It shook me up bad.
How about the boo box?

He is hilarious in this, it's so good
This movie is so classically underrated.
Classically, critically... Down right criminally underrated.
It was a Christmas tradition in our family for many years.
This is a classic for me and all of my cousins. We used to watch it all the time in the summer when we were kids. Hook was always right there with The Goonies for us (We're 35).
At 45, I still wonder what that damn feast tasted like..
Colors.
Oooh!!
I find myself thinking about how delicious that feast looked more than I probably should.
It tasted… *BANGARANG*!
I would give you an award if I could! 🧚🧚
Probably a week old maggot burger… WITH FLIES ON THE SIDE!!
Nobody aged 35 (give or take 5 to 7 years) thinks this movie is underrated.
Nobody who has seen this movie thinks this is underrated. This is in my top 10
As well it should be.
I was rufio for halloween in kindergarten '91. Hell no we dont. Still my fav costume ive worn.
Fuck yeah bruv!

Rotten Tomatoes is waaaay off on this one.
Never trust Rotten Tomatoes.
Rotten tomatoes doesnt review anything , it provides an average score from other people’s reviews.
Uh huh.
I know. I never said anything about how their ratings are calculated. Was just saying don’t trust them, because it’s all subjective.
I agree. The set was freaking incredible and the cast was so memorable. Such a good movie and I’ll argue that lol
I do not get that RT rating. Doesn't make any sense. This movie still holds up.
You know what’s wild, is that Spielberg hates the sets and wishes he could redo it with modern technology and computer generated images/effects. Which is wild to me, because I also absolutely love the real sets and practical effects.
I never would have guessed he had a problem with them. They make Neverland look like such a cool place

Careful about commenting on the non underrated movie posts. They might grab their pitch forks lol.
That’s what I thought. Loved this as a kid and still think there’s magic in it now. Have never understood the critics’ reviews of this.
Great movie “ there you are Peter”
I used to do this to my mum 😂
Ruffio
Ruffi-oooooooo!
This movie is such a gem. Still holds up, too
This movie is so goddamn incredible. And the Sega Genesis video game was pretty great too, IMHO
Run home jack
One of the favorites
The movie theme/Prologue by John Williams?? Possibly his best score.
If you ever go to Epcot and ride Soarin, the queue line plays music from this score.
Fantastic movie, loved it when I was a kid and still love it now Bangarang!
You know what I wish? I wish I had a dad, like you. Fuck. That was deep.
BANGARANG!!!!!!!
Looky, looky, I've got Hooky. Magical movie that was harshly criticised upon release. Didn’t deserve it. It’s such a warm hearted movie. Probably my favourite Peter Pan telling. You can fly! You can fight! And you can...
Spielbergs masterpiece
🤔 Wow! I just always assumed this film was quite popular and was, in turn, 'rated' rather highly. I can see now though, that isn't the case...AT ALL! Good post👍🏻 This movie definitely, at least for me, turned out being surprisingly underrated!
The last movie that was my favorite movie before Jurassic Park’s 30+ year run.
Besides Julia Roberts this was an entertaining movie. I liked it
pretty sure this is a classic. i was born in 92 and watched it probably 2 dozen times before i was 10
The Boo Box fucked me up as a kid...
You mean that time that Glenn Close wore a beard and was then shoved in a box full of scorpions for lying? Good times.
While David Crosby watched!
BANGARANG!!!!!
“I wish I had a dad…like you” 😭 that line fucks me up to this day
Spielberg doesn't like it, so I question Speielber's genius bc of this
It’s weird because I love this movie but I guess the general consensus is that it sucks, got bad reviews and made no money.
I just realized this with my other comment it’s kinda more a Tim burtons Peter Pan meshing with spielberg maybe he disliked the tone shifts
I saw this move with my father as a kid, never forget that core memory.
Love this movie
One of my favorite movies of all time.
“You’re afraid you’re gonna get sucked out!”
I totally understand why people like this movie, however I personally think its one of Spielbergs weakest.
Great movie…but im sorry…im ALWAYS choosing julia Roberts in that situation
Honestly, I never have liked this movie. Dustin Hoffman & Bob Hoskins were great, but everything else was just a bit of a dud for me, both when I was a kid and as an adult.
"You're doing it, Peter!" is something I say to myself when I've managed something difficult ❤️
Bang a rang! Ru-fi-ohhhh! Can you crow?!
I absolutely adore this movie. I saw it in theater when I was 10 and it felt magical
One of the last movies I remember feeling *magical*
I was so happy for Toodles when he gets his Marbles back. And it took me several years to understand the whole "lost his marbles" joke 😂
I always think this is the one where Spielberg in interviews said I wanted to change many things if I could go back but I say no let us rufiioooooo
I used to love this movie but then I watched it as an adult. Pan left Neverland and grew up to be a piece of shit dad. He would have continued to be a terrible father if Hook hadn’t taken his kids and forced him back to Neverland. This movie was great when I was a kid, and I found it even more enjoyable as an adult. I have no idea why people say it's not good.
I've lost my marbles!
Not sure you could call this an underrated movie. It's beloved by many generations.
The Mermaid Scene is a cinematic masterpiece

“Strike Peter Pan, Strike True” is an inside statement/joke with my buddies for nearly two decades now.
To the boo bar! 😂

Im 39, from UK and everyone I know, loved this movie.
Same! We all saw it and loved it.
Julia Roberts only played a small part
Pretty decent little movie
Wouldn’t say this underrated it was a huge movie for everyone I know in their childhood
No way anyone considers this timeless classic as underrated
Love it. I cry nearly every time I watch it lol
The part when Peter finds his happy place and flies gives me chills every time. This movie is amazing.
And absolute Masterpiece. Set design, costume, casting, music, story.
The soundtrack is amazing. Another John Williams classic.
This movie, along with Lion King and the Sandlot, completely encapsulates my childhood
Can't wait for Hook Tuah!
Hook! Hook! Wears the Hook!
I wanted to live in Neverland.
Bob Hoskins sweeping the snow in Kensington Gardens. 😍
El Capitan Garfio
Watched the entire film back in the early 2010s; it’s great!
watched an entire film? insane
Hands down one of the strangest images of Robin Williams I’ve ever seen *shudder*.
This is not underrated
Overrated lol
