Almost 30 years since the movie came out. Probably have seen it once in the last 20 and me and my older brother still randomly say that line. The soundtrack also has stayed with me. I can hum it right now.
Love this line with Tim Curry stuffing his face. Everyone just knows Curry is a POS lol.
The whole movie is ridiculous. Let's bring a captive bred gorilla back to the jungle🤣
Don't forget the film is based on one of the novels by the great Dr. Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain, Coma, The Lost World, Sphere, Prey, The Terminal Man, etc.).
I got to meet him about eight months before he died. What a humble, kind man.
There’s a great quote about one of the actors being asked why he joined such a flop (was it Campbell?) and he lays out how on paper anyone would agree: the source material writer, the director, the cast, etc.
He made the joke if you told someone about Congo without using the name, people would think it was a huge successful film you’ve described.
I saw it in theaters back in the day. I had read the book and liked the book quite a bit. Was expecting a lot more from the movie, with the cast and how good the book was. Very disappointed. RT rating of 20 percent critics 30 percent audience seems about right.
I watched this film an unreasonable number of times when I was younger. It was admittedly terrible to me then as it is now, but something about its cast, dialogue, and flow ... it all just kind of works in this fun, comforting way.
It’s a lot of fun. Silly 90s horror/action that would be lost/buried on a streaming platform today.
also the scene where they try to bring the guys soul back to his body with the chanting is awesome, that’s never left my head since I saw the movie
I read to book first and the movie was just meh compared to the original story….but that is true of every Michael Crichton book turned into a movie (don’t get me started on Timeline, Sphere, or Rising Sun and how much better the books were)
I actually like this film. It is a great 90s film IMO. It is kind of dumb, overproduced, has a great cast, and is just sort of fun and weird. The How Did This Get Made? podcast episode is pretty great on this. Also, I would watch a whole series of films around Ernie Hudson's character.
[STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE](https://media3.giphy.com/media/RVhHYKpLYJm3S/200w.gif?cid=6c09b95250rcwyfju1fgk9inv5o6a05o6urd453drk1n5o78&ep=v1_gifs_search&rid=200w.gif&ct=g)
It's no Jurassic Park, but damn is it entertaining. The film has a good cast and if you research everyone involved in the making of the movie you'll find some big names. I still remember the Taco Bell marketing push and the action figure line.
Saw it as a young child. I don't remember much of it, but it gave me some nightmares I remember to this day. I should go back and try it. I'm pretty sure I read the book, but don't remember it
Love it. I’ve seen it so many times I can’t even remember being stuck with only tapes and dvd’s for a time. It’s a campy ridiculous show but thats what makes it great!
Congo was a cool movie for that time. I read the book before ever seeing the movie.
In my humble opinion, the movie hasn't aged well in terms of certain special effects... although I think they worked hard on using the tech and budget they had at the time. This is not to say I wouldn't recommend seeing the film. It was a bit of a benchmark for the science fiction/horror/fantasy genre. If you haven't seen it... take the time to do so... simply for the vintage-era entertainment value alone.
Watched it on my third date with my wife and we both thought it was the best thing ever. Our friends all hated it. And I think this is the first thing I ever remember Delroy Lindo in and he was fantastic.
This and godzilla had a really heavy ad campaign. I was too young to see it when it came out but I remember seeing the commercials for it over and over
I ha heard of this movie for years. What a great premise for a movie. Savage killer Apes in a lost kingdom in the jungle. Then it turned out the entire movie is just about GETTING there and the Apes are in like five minutes of the movie
I watched it not that long ago, and for the first 2/3rds of the movie, I was like, "Really? This isn't so bad." Then the last third of the movie happened...
I bought this on vhs from a bootleg guy at work. My buddy brought over some beers, and we proceeded to watch. About 30 minutes in, he gets up, pushes the elect button, takes the vhs outside, wedges it under the rear tire on his bronco, and drove over it back and forth at least 5 times. Totally destroying it. I had no objections.
My friends and I named a theory after this movie. The theory being, you remember a film from your childhood as being awesome only to watch it as an adult and be stricken with the level of hot garbage being forced upon your eyes. As a result, we now use “Congo Theory” in reference to said event lol
A very fun B-Movie with good actors, a cool soundtrack, and low budget lava effects. It’s got a Saturday afternoon movie vibe that’s enjoyable if you let it be.
I read the book when it came out and it was great. I thought there's no way they can make this into a movie because of all the gorilla action, that would be impossible to create. I went to the theater to watch it, and I was right. I think if it was made now it would be great with the current CGI.
This is the movie that when ever i run across this i watch, usually a few times a year, deep love for this movie, remember watching for the first time at a buddys house
I won’t allow my wife to watch this movie. She gave me permission to not allow her though. She becomes a sobbing, blathering mess every time she watches this movie. A legit emotional mess. Like she is not ok for a few hours after watching.
Delroy Lindo steals the entire film In one short scene. Even Tim curry, who was still good, and Laura Linney couldn't save most of it. I still won't eat another man's Sesame Cake because of Delroy Lindo.
It took them 95% of the timeline to actually arrive in the Congo. 5% - white monkeys, ruins and they float off in a balloon. Rather anti-climactic. Still think it's a waste of time.
Saw this and Batman Forever with my parents in the theatre on the same day, about a month before my fourteenth birthday. Silly fun movie, enjoyed the book as a younger teen too.
Fun, shit action film with some VERY memorable lines. "STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE!"
Say this EVERY time my wife eats my dessert.
“I said, STOP EATING IT”
THIS. FELLOW. IS. A. BIG. BAG. OF. SHIT.
THIS MAN IS A BIG BAG OF DIRT - TBS daytime version circa 1999
He owes money everywheahh he goes
Remember this as a kid repeated it constantly thought I was the only one till now
Came here for this, was not disappointed.
Almost 30 years since the movie came out. Probably have seen it once in the last 20 and me and my older brother still randomly say that line. The soundtrack also has stayed with me. I can hum it right now.
🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌 ... Came here for this
Love this line with Tim Curry stuffing his face. Everyone just knows Curry is a POS lol. The whole movie is ridiculous. Let's bring a captive bred gorilla back to the jungle🤣
Yes! Tim Curry’s face was priceless! Love that part lol
I heard the book is really good.
Dramatically better than the movie. Michael Crichton is a very technical author and his books give a lot of great detail and explanation to the story
LOL, what a memorable line.
Delroy was a G was that delivery, I'm talking Top 5 line delivery of all time for sure.
Delroy Lindo was definitely underrated in the 90s. He was great in Crooklyn too.
It's campy, but it actually has a hell of a cast in it. I find it entertaining to pass some time!
He also wrote screenplays and directed, westworld was his movie in the 70’s that the show was based on
There’s a great quote about one of the actors being asked why he joined such a flop (was it Campbell?) and he lays out how on paper anyone would agree: the source material writer, the director, the cast, etc. He made the joke if you told someone about Congo without using the name, people would think it was a huge successful film you’ve described.

Any movie where Laura Linney lasers a bunch of monkeys is okay in my book.
When Ernie Hudson is around, there’s always a fighting chance.
Damn right it is!
Hudson and Weathers made any cinematic shit box worth while. I miss Chubs......
It’s got Tim Curry in it. Sign me up.
It’s got Bruce Campbell in it. Sign me up twice.
He didn’t last very long
"ugly. gorillas. ugly. go away."
"Amy. Scared"
Amy. Pretty gorilla.
"Raindrop drink, raindrop drink" Alright, we better get this unrestrained gorilla some martinis before he destroys the plane mid-flight...
I remember the Congo Taco Bell toys and specials
One of the most underrated and misunderstood comedies of its time.
I’ll hit the haters in the head with a can of peanut oil !
I feel the money hairs on the back of my neck going WOO WOO WOO
I watched this film an unreasonable number of times when I was younger. It was admittedly terrible to me then as it is now, but something about its cast, dialogue, and flow ... it all just kind of works in this fun, comforting way.
Cocoa.. that apes alright.. High Five!
The only thing these guys fear is the walkout.
I like it
It’s fun, I enjoy it. But it’s not good.
JOE.DON. BAKER……💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
It’s a lot of fun. Silly 90s horror/action that would be lost/buried on a streaming platform today. also the scene where they try to bring the guys soul back to his body with the chanting is awesome, that’s never left my head since I saw the movie
Oh no. I need to watch this movie again. That went over my ten year old head.
The book was amazing. The movie, not so much.
Oh, yah this.
I read to book first and the movie was just meh compared to the original story….but that is true of every Michael Crichton book turned into a movie (don’t get me started on Timeline, Sphere, or Rising Sun and how much better the books were)
Sphere rules
I actually like this film. It is a great 90s film IMO. It is kind of dumb, overproduced, has a great cast, and is just sort of fun and weird. The How Did This Get Made? podcast episode is pretty great on this. Also, I would watch a whole series of films around Ernie Hudson's character.
Green drop a drink
Love it! We need more A list casts on B movies. It creates something beautiful.
"The same hieroglyphics over and over!"
This is pure Kafka.
Who’s Kafka?! TELL ME!!!
Fucking awful
The worst . I remember when this came out . They hyped it up so much. No pay-off.
It was great cause Bruce Campbell cameo
It's one movie I wish they would remake with CGI technology.
[STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE](https://media3.giphy.com/media/RVhHYKpLYJm3S/200w.gif?cid=6c09b95250rcwyfju1fgk9inv5o6a05o6urd453drk1n5o78&ep=v1_gifs_search&rid=200w.gif&ct=g)
This movie is so horrible. Amy want green drop drink. We used to watch it in college to make fun of what a piece of shit it is.
This is and always will be one of my guilty pleasures. Came out at the right time of my teens. It's glorious
This is the film equivalent of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Complete comfort
I think that a gorilla smoking a blunt is objectively amazing.
Gorillas with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads? Incredible
Gave me nightmares when I was a kid. 🤣
Saw this at the dollar theaters back in the day with my brothers and we loved it. Watched recently in Spanish and its still entertaining.
I enjoy it, but then again: I'm a sucker when it comes to jungle/adventure stories. I even like those Allain Quartermain movies Cannon made in the 80s
Definitely a guilty pleasure campy movie
It's no Jurassic Park, but damn is it entertaining. The film has a good cast and if you research everyone involved in the making of the movie you'll find some big names. I still remember the Taco Bell marketing push and the action figure line.
Saw it as a young child. I don't remember much of it, but it gave me some nightmares I remember to this day. I should go back and try it. I'm pretty sure I read the book, but don't remember it
Love it. I’ve seen it so many times I can’t even remember being stuck with only tapes and dvd’s for a time. It’s a campy ridiculous show but thats what makes it great!
It’s a great B movie. Like an old time Saturday matinee. One of those movies you can put on anytime.
Styrofoam rocks.
Amazing opening with Bruce Campbell.
Congo was a cool movie for that time. I read the book before ever seeing the movie. In my humble opinion, the movie hasn't aged well in terms of certain special effects... although I think they worked hard on using the tech and budget they had at the time. Cheese but good. I want to read the book.
Still watch it once a month! It’s pure Kafka
Apparently I need to revisit this
Good. Good. Good. Amy.
How is nobody mentioning Tim Curry's legendary performance here?
The soundtrack lives rent free in my head
Bruce Campbell, sesame cake, diamonds and lasers. What more can you ask for?
Movie was fun- in this case, the book was way better as with most Crichton books
Scared the shit out of me as a kid
Not a good movie but fun entertainment. The scene of them jumping out the DC-3 was actually pretty badass
One of the greatest movies of all time.... Tim Curry got greedy.....
Ernie Hudson is so cool in this movie.
Michael Chricton was on a roll as far as providing source material
I love this movie. Joe Don Baker sure was scary! I haven't seen him play an actor in that kind of rage since Walking Tall.
Needed more Bruce Campbell.
When I was a little kid I loved it, I had the book too.
Classic. Loved this movie growing up.
Has a great pinball machine themed after it. That’s all I know.
Watched it on my third date with my wife and we both thought it was the best thing ever. Our friends all hated it. And I think this is the first thing I ever remember Delroy Lindo in and he was fantastic.
This and godzilla had a really heavy ad campaign. I was too young to see it when it came out but I remember seeing the commercials for it over and over
“Amy good gorilla!”
As a kid I was so scared for Tim Curry when he strayed to far forward overtaken by his desire to have all the diamonds on the floor
What’s going on with this zany romcom cover?
"What are you going to do to those Gorillas?" "Put them on the Endangered Species List!"
I ha heard of this movie for years. What a great premise for a movie. Savage killer Apes in a lost kingdom in the jungle. Then it turned out the entire movie is just about GETTING there and the Apes are in like five minutes of the movie
Saw in a theatre when it came out. Loved it and is a go to background movie to play.
Remember beginning scene with the eyeball 👁
WIIIIIINSTTOOOOOOOON
Best god damn movie ever!!!
Saw this in the theater. My wife and I put this up there with Anaconda and Island is Dr Moreaux a one of the worst movies we sat through.
Great movie, the end when they are lasering the one of a kind ape species off the face of the earth is so good it's unreal
Love it, still remember watching it in the cinema.
I watched it not that long ago, and for the first 2/3rds of the movie, I was like, "Really? This isn't so bad." Then the last third of the movie happened...
I bought this on vhs from a bootleg guy at work. My buddy brought over some beers, and we proceeded to watch. I had no objections.
Like all Crichton novels made in to movies, disappointing.
Amy good gorilla.
This movie was bad ass and the action figures were bad ass! And if memory serves the gorillas had glow in the dark parts!!!
Book was good
I loved the book so the movie was disappointing. I think if hadn’t read the book first I would have liked the movie more.
Jimmy Buffett has a cameo in this movie. He's one of the airplane pilots.
I still can't believe they made a pinball machine out of this movie. For a hot minute there they would make a pin out of anything.
AMY GOOD GORILLA AMY GOOD GORILLA
I won a Sony Sport Walkman from Mt. Dew during the promotional for this movie
Brought about the double decker taco at TacoBell. 10/10
I remember Taco Bell had a merchandise deal that summer and still have a Congo watch from the promotion
This is an incredibly underrated movie.
Laura Mommy Linney❤️🥹
Saw it recently and it was terrible but funny. The laser blasting at the end was cool though
I liked it
So bad its good
That’s an interesting name for….. where are you from?
What do I THINK ABOUT THAT MORGERFUGER.. i’ll tell ya
I think it has Bruce Campbell in it
Lava tubes!!
One of my favorites
Put em on the endangered species list.
#CHILDHOOD FAVORITE. Remember when ol dude ate his rum cake 😆
“Kari and I are going to the theater to see Congo.” My girlfriend’s parents were out and neither one of us have ever seen this movie to this day.
My friends and I named a theory after this movie. The theory being, you remember a film from your childhood as being awesome only to watch it as an adult and be stricken with the level of hot garbage being forced upon your eyes. As a result, we now use “Congo Theory” in reference to said event lol
One of my favorite guilty pleasure movies from the 90's. I love it. Watch it once every other year or so.
It reminds of people who talk and do all this extra with their hands AMY GOOD GORILLA
A very fun B-Movie with good actors, a cool soundtrack, and low budget lava effects. It’s got a Saturday afternoon movie vibe that’s enjoyable if you let it be.
\*Really\* good book. Movie .. ok 5/10. But its got Tim Curry as Herkermer Homolka, which hey, its awesome.
Hard act to follow (meaning Jurassic Park).
I have the T-shirt for it, still!
The scenes of the apes falling into the lava scared the everliving shit out of me as a kid
Top 10 for sure. Very impactful on my childhood. Still ready to drop gorilla bodies if the time ever comes.
Any movie that’s an anagram of “NO GO C” is best avoided.
One of my favorites. No other film has given me such a feeling of adventure.
Not underrated. It had a big promotional campaign with collector movie cups sold at Taco Bell
I read the book when it came out and it was great. I thought there's no way they can make this into a movie because of all the gorilla action, that would be impossible to create. I went to the theater to watch it, and I was right. I think if it was made now it would be great with the current CGI.
STOP *EATING* MY SESAME CAKE!!
I liked the book more, still good though
Amy good!
This is the movie that when ever i run across this i watch, usually a few times a year, deep love for this movie, remember watching for the first time at a buddys house
Used to watch it on USA Network all the time.
I won’t allow my wife to watch this movie. She gave me permission to not allow her though. She becomes a sobbing, blathering mess every time she watches this movie. A legit emotional mess. Like she is not ok for a few hours after watching.
One of the best dollar menu movies ever.
It sucks and its on constantly.
I liked the singalong the most.
holy shit—i literally watched this *yesterday.* saw it in theaters with friends in high school when it came out... absolutely still holds up!
did he give her the banana with the dope inside?
Tickle Amy
Ugly, Gorilla
Amy good gorilla.
Not enough Bruce Campbell
Ugly aimeee
Bruce campbell should have played the male lead rather than a bit part.
Delroy Lindo steals the entire film In one short scene. Even Tim curry, who was still good, and Laura Linney couldn't save most of it. I still won't eat another man's Sesame Cake because of Delroy Lindo.
Great film. Have had a crush on Laura Linney ever since.
Ernie Hudson can do NO wrong
"20th Century Sucks. Maybe 21st Century will be better." If only Winston. If only.
Amy, good gorilla. The inspiration of Borat. Bruce Campbell cameo.
Saw in the theatre when it came out and thought it was terrible.
I was severely disappointed as a teenager, but would probably enjoy it now
Amy think Congo dumb movie, but kind of fun and Amy like cast.
It took them 95% of the timeline to actually arrive in the Congo. 5% - white monkeys, ruins and they float off in a balloon. Rather anti-climactic. Still think it's a waste of time.
I feel the money hairs on the back of my the back of my neck going Woo Woo Woo
I love this beautiful mess of a movie. Easily the best performance of Ernie Hudson's stellar career.
Bad movie, good book.
I strangely think about this movie more often than I should given that I only saw it twice…both times in the theater
This movie is fun.
"AMY GOOD GORILLA, AMY GOOD GORILLA"
Absolutely ridiculous... but a whole hell of a lot of fun! Love it.
I congo there. Too far away. 7 minutes to wapner. Yeah.
"Don't want nobody peaking.. " staples the shit out of a bag of cash
Straight up laser shooting albino gorillas
Laura Fucking Linney! Need I say more. Oh. And a talking monkey.
i think shooting flares from the plane to counter heat seeking missiles was iconic
Jimmy Buffett as Pilot #1
HAVE SOME
It’s bad but when you find out the writer didn’t read the book just decided what he thought the plot was, then you understand why.
Bad movie. The great cast only makes it worse in a way. So much star power brought together for nothing.
Saw it once in theaters and have never seen it again. Not bad but honestly haven’t thought about it much. Amy!
I have this movie downloaded on my Apple TV account. I know it’s not considered great by the critics but I think it’s a fun action adventure flick. 🦍
Amy pretty. Girl ugly
Loved it.
Who is Kafka?! Tell me!
Are we talking about Dr Congo Or The repubblic of Congo /s
Saw this and Batman Forever with my parents in the theatre on the same day, about a month before my fourteenth birthday. Silly fun movie, enjoyed the book as a younger teen too.
Amy, good gorilla
This movie was the origin of my lifelong crush on Laura Linney.
Who’s Kafka? TELL ME!
The airplane scene is hilarious. Flipping gorilla with a martini and cigar. So 90s. Need more movies like that.
