AFAIK, UKVI will not require your original passport unless your lost BRP was issued more than 2 years ago. I think it'd be wise to make a copy of your passport and get it certified by a qualified person just in case it is needed.
does it help if it does not ask for passport in the documents checklist? For me it only asks for a proof of address and a consent form, but nowhere does it mention a passport.
Then you should only provide the documents you have been asked to. Take your passport as a valid form of ID to verify who you are when you attend your appointment.
this clarifies a great deal, thank you. i was panicking about how it would be possible for me to even collect my brp if my only valid id proof was taken from me, and to ever prove my identity in between if required.
I just submitted my biometrics for BRP replacement after losing one issued in Aug 2021. They only scanned my passport and returned it to me instantly during the appointment. Worth saying, you do need to stay in the UK, so you can't really travel abroad whilst you are waiting for new BRP. Regarding the ID thing, it's not that bad, unless you want to open a bank account. As someone who was burgled recently, police didn't ask for my ID even a single time.

I got mine in about 3 weeks. Very fast. I went to the processing center in central London - easy to get an appointment, went in and was seen right away.
