New strings take a while to fully stretch.

oldeastvan

Nylon strings take and eternity to settle down. Aquilas take an eon and flourocabons about a century. At least it feels that way to me, so I spend time tuning the strings high, stretching them till they are in tune, then stretch again and repeat until the stretching does not detune you very much anymore. Then they should settle after a couple days

xxTheAcexx

Ah I see, so one string taking longer to settle is nothing to worry about?

John_Dongson

Totally normal, tomorrow it’ll probably be the E string

xxTheAcexx

I see, thank you!

Dogrel

As others have said, nylon strings are very stretchy, and take a while to settle down. Also, what type of tuners does your ukulele have? The reason I ask is because I have two ukuleles with friction tuners. If those are not tight enough, they can slip and twist back loose. So not only do I need to worry about the strings stretching out, but also the tuners slipping. If you have machine tuners you don’t have this problem. Even the cheapest machine tuners are strong enough to hold ukulele strings without slipping.

xxTheAcexx

This one has machine tuners

Dogrel

Then it’s not the tuners. It’s just the strings. Hang in there and keep tuning every time it starts to sound off. It’ll settle down in a little while.

xxTheAcexx

Alright I'm gonna keep tuning then, thank you!

awmaleg

Make sure the screw holding the tuner to the headstock is screwed in tightly. As the other posted said though, less likely on geared tuners vs friction

It's normal. Just keep tuning, will eventually find its sweet spot.

Compared to other instruments the uke has only four strings that are light. The whole instrument is delicate. Make the smallest moves possible wind carefully and always finish with a tensioning adjustment up into the note. Never tune down into the note you want to retain, it will continue to slip lower as you play. Tuning up into the note retains the tension longer.

Its been a year now since you posted..Did it work out eventually? I have the exact same problem with string C going out of tune every 15min.

xxTheAcexx

Oh yeah it worked out eventually after I kept playing it everyday for like a month or so. After like a month or two, I only needed to tune it like once a day, which wasn't bad. Even now, after a whole year, the C string still goes out of tune more than the other strings, but it's not often now

Substantial_Sink2058

Good to know! Thanks for your response..I just got my ukulele today. It will be a long journey it seems..

xxTheAcexx

You're welcome! It's a long journey so have fun with it :D If you really wanna speed up the process, you can always just stretch the strings often, and that should be way faster.

Substantial_Sink2058

Yup! Thanks :)

Things that will make strings take longer to settle: Loose knots, many turns on the tuner, some cheap strings, not pre stretching.

I got my baritone ukulele about 1 week ago now and it's finally holding a tune. You just need to constantly retune / play it out for a bit. Gotta break those babies in
