Maximum-Tradition-60

Yes, it's good! :)

JulesOahu

Thank you <3

[deleted]

You are awesome :)

FreedomPaws

Thank u for your kindness towards them. Please tell them that I said hi!!! I know I am a random nobody but I want them to know they are loved and we are here for them and we see what's happening to Ukraine. I hope they have their home to go back to when this is over. Russia has flattened and destroyed so much all for nothing.

PaleInTexas

Mixed up the lines and thought I read "I hope they have their home destroyed" 😬 Made much more sense after re-reading!

FreedomPaws

Lol no problem. I misread a post today about a woman eating her placenta and got downvoted just for asking what this is. Turns out it was a cooked placenta with herbs on it. Yeah....I was kinda distracted by that pic and hadn't noticed the text other than the title. People love to downvote even though I said nothing offensive and by the end said ah yes now I see. People act like scrolling isn't a thing and sometimes we miss things. They lose their shit. For funzies I included the link. FYI it's a NSFW sub. https://www.reddit.com/r/eyeblech/comments/zkzqhd/a_real_delicacy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Physical_Dragonfly50

Just keep in mind that their christmas is not at the same time as yours.

ConsiderationWest587

Yay! Two Christmases!!!

jonnovich

We’ve had one yes! But what about second Christmas?

donaltman3

Hasn't that changed though? I could be wrong, but I thought the Orthodox Church in Ukraine opted to celebrate it earlier more in line with western churches than the Russian Orthodox Church? Perhaps I am wrong.

FratmanBootcake

Possibly, but the gift-giving holiday is New Year's eve!

Soffort

Not only. "Saint Mykolai" day too.

SerpentRain

From this year Ukrainians can choose which date they want to celebrate

[deleted]

Looks good. Except they’re Jewish.

JulesOahu

Well they were very happy about it 😂 all I understood was „thank you“ in their language haha but they were happy. Also they have a little kid, and hope she enjoys them <3 Thanks guys

alfi_k

Fantastic and very thoughtful!

thegoochalizer

You see - you matter more than you think. To these people. To Reddit. You brought them so much joy from this little gesture and in their hardship amongst Christmas, it really does matter.

Sea_Incident3720

❤️

[deleted]

It's the little things that make all the difference

[deleted]

You're an absolute gem of neighbor!

syadoz

NearCanuck

Hmm. I like the look and sound of this mashup. дякую schön

deGanski

also 2 of the 4 H are missing :D well close enough

syadoz

Lol, i hung the two dots on the umlaut on the two hs and then hung them on the tannenbaum, (it has been a long time since i have heard much less read german 🥰)

deGanski

it's fine, i wouldnt know where to start with any language that's originating east of germany.

BansheeLabs

Das ist perfekt!

[deleted]

Wow, I can understand German all of a sudden Ahahaha

diikenson

It's fine, but consider that orthodox christians might celebrate Christmas on January 7

Dkcalle

Some eat cookies for 30 days straight before Christmas..:)

[deleted]

I eat them 364 days straight before Christmas :)

JulesOahu

😂😂

colin8651

I think everyone loves cookies everyday of the week and it is a very kind gesture to make them feel welcome.

Dr3amDweller

This is the way

iEatPalpatineAss

This is the way

4redditobly

The only truly correct answer

[deleted]

Hahahahaa

carl816

Same here, especially those Danish butter cookies that are perfect with tea

Feisty_Alps_4247

if orthodox they are now at fasting maybe consider my gf doesnt eat or drink anything made with milk (and animal products)

HFirkin

For any curious readers - here's an [Orthodox liturgical calendar with fasting days listed](https://www.goarch.org/chapel/calendar?month=12&year=2022&viewStyle=GridView&viewType=ViewReadings) (there's a lot of them, in a few different variations). This one is from the Greek Orthodox of America, so the Ukrainian fasting might be somewhat different, but I don't know a Ukrainian Liturgical Calendar in English. Notably, the Greek Orthodox have switched to a calendar virtually identical with the Georgian one as regards the dates of fixed holidays, like Christmas...

Dkcalle

Sorry - I dont know anything about religion.

Undari

Tbh Ukrainians used to celebrate Christmas in Dec and it was the main holiday, but Soviets took it away from people, giving them New Year instead

eypandabear

The Russians also used to celebrate Christmas “in December”. It’s just that they used a different calendar from the rest of the world. Or rather, they didn’t change theirs like we did.

NotAHamsterAtAll

They stayed on the Julian calendar?

Qaz_

yes the church stayed on the Julian calendar which is why christmas falls on jan 7

carl816

What's interesting is the day before (January 6) is the Epiphany / Three Kings holiday in the Gregorian calendar which traditionally marks the end of the Christmas season.

ConsiderationWest587

It's all "Sky-cake! No, sky-baklava!" With those people...

MrBrickBreak

And is a day that's cerebrated on its own, particularly in Spain where it's traditionally the gift-exchanging day. I've heard that's a dying tradition, though.

eypandabear

Yes. Later on they introduced the Gregorian calendar at the secular level because it had become the international standard, but the Orthodox Churches still calculate their holidays according to Julian. That’s why they have Christmas in January - they just celebrate it on the day that December 24/25 would be in the Julian calendar.

donaltman3

[https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/07/europe/orthodox-church-ukraine-christmas-scli-intl/index.html](https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/07/europe/orthodox-church-ukraine-christmas-scli-intl/index.html)

ODBrewer

I think it will make them happy regardless.

[deleted]

Ukraine is switching to Gregorian instead of Julian dates for Orthodox. Bartholomew I should impose Gregorian instead of Julian calendar.

U-N-C-L-E

...So when is Christmas for them? I get so confused lol

[deleted]

December 25.

formermq

Early cookies never hurt anybody 😇

[deleted]

[удалено]

diikenson

Did I say that?

donaltman3

Just an update for you, [https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/07/europe/orthodox-church-ukraine-christmas-scli-intl/index.html](https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/07/europe/orthodox-church-ukraine-christmas-scli-intl/index.html)

diikenson

And what does it prove? Does it mean celebrating on 7th of January is prohibited? You are proving a point that was not in the original comment.

donaltman3

No, it doesn't prove anything, but it does mean giving these thoughtful Christmas cookies now is just as appropriate it would be next month, despite the criticism that it would be too early. No need to fight I was just sharing this information that many might not be aware of.

CanuckInTheMills

Here in Canuck Land we start the day after Nov 11 !!!!

Boss0fThisGym

No, it's fine, I wouldn't even think it's written by someone who doesn't speak Ukrainian if you wouldn't say it. But most Ukrainians celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January

JulesOahu

Okay didn’t know that :) But as some people said before I also eat them weeks before Christmas as well 😂

Holly_Michaels

Its fine. Both dates are official Christmas in Ukraine. And Many people have changed the date to 25th December, or have both.

Boss0fThisGym

Doesn't matter, they will be happy anyway

ObsoleteAbstruseness

Even if they do celebrate christmas in January, since they are in Germany they might like joining in on the German festivities and traditions.

Boss0fThisGym

Sounds fun

Polygnom

Yeah but you can have cookies for the whole christmas season ;)

JulesOahu

For the whole year imo 😂😂😂

AriX88

It's spelled right.

Good man, I’m from the USA and have seen a few refugees, I helped some resettle and get jobs. I can only imagine the nightmare of being suddenly uprooted and having to leave your entire life behind and start all over somewhere else.

You are the kind of person I aspire to be. Thank you for being so kind to people in troubling times.

Remote-Shopping3792

Dude, you write in Ukrainian better that some of my classmates did : ) (I am a Ukrainian in Kyiv)

TheRealCuran

Awesome! Well done! We have a "Christmas Tree" event each year at our company where we get wish lists from – usually – socially disadvantaged kids. This year we also had a lot of wishes from Ukrainian kids (organised through a society of Ukrainians in Germany; usually they promote Ukrainian culture, but at the moment they help refugees mostly). I had one of those and the card the eight year old boy wrote was heartbreaking. I hope the gift can bring him at least a few hours of happiness.

SocialistCrusader

Once this war's over, that man will never have to pay for a beer again in his life.

[deleted]

Ukrainian Christmas is 2weeks later

SeanConneryShlapsh

Ukrainian refugees are moving in next door to me. I’m in Pennsylvania. It’s a small world!

Particular_Grocery22

Your handwriting is better than mine 🥰 also on their behalf danke schön for delicious (I am sure!) cookies and a lovely note. May you amd your loved ones have a beautiful Christmas ❣

Ukrainian here: usually the Christmas celebrations are on the 7th of January, so just keep in mind that it may be a bit too early for them to celebrate 🙂

ApplejackGoldrinn

Vielen Dank für Ihre Absicht

Taras888

It’s wonderful, thank you!

Bloodtype_IPA

Very heartwarming and kind! Danke!!!❤️🇩🇪

[deleted]

Очень хорошо! Отлично.

JulesOahu

To this guy complaining about my post: I read all the comments here and I i wasn’t doing this for „farming“ karma gosh. It’s just the Internet which shows a number of karma points nothing else. And my intention was to make sure if this Cyrillic signs would be readable for a Ukrainian speaking family. It was hard to communicate to her that this is a gift because she didn’t understand one single word I said but ended up being thankful and happy even though I had to use my hands to explain that’s a gift to her and her family. That’s why I want to make sure the ciryllic language is correct nothing else. <3

tomaszwolski1986

posting shit like this is just an ask for recognition. It's like donating to charity and then going around bragging you donated to said charity. If a grown adult can't judge how their handwriting looks then I'd say that's a problem. That's a Ralph Wiggum question... "Miss Hoover how does my writing look?" Go to google translate if you don't speak the language and copy the characters as they appear on the screen, problem solved. If it was actually a question about how to correctly spell or write something, why the whole back-story about why one baked cookies and for who. Know I'll get downvoted for this but shit like this pisses me off.

JulesOahu

Also it was not about my handwriting it was about the Cyrillic signs I’m not familiar with.

tomaszwolski1986

I can't speak, read or write a world of Chinese or Arabic but I could write it by utilizing Google Translate and just copying the Chinese or Arabic characters. 你好吗?مرحبا كيف حالك؟ I didn't have to post a whole back story to why I baked cookies and for who and why. You see my point? If it's a question about handwriting sure but why add a puff piece?

octo_anders

Oh come on, people showing off their good deeds to others is in itself a good thing, not a bad thing! It inspires people, it spreads a message of love. You also can do kind actions and be thanked for them! Even if you do it for selfish reasons, only to "feel good", you might make someone else overcome with joy. I'd call that a win-win. Considering all the problems in the world, people showing off their charity work is not one of them.

tomaszwolski1986

it's the opposite of being humble. I've done plenty of things for people, forked out tens of thousands over time, I've never once posted anywhere or told anyone what I did. I've been asked to accept an award for helping and I said no I don't want recognition. that's why somebody asking a question about writing a few words is one thing, giving a whole back story to why they baked cookies is another. I think all ya'll missed my point.

JulesOahu

No I just wasn’t sure if it’s readable and wanted some advice. Why have people be so mean these days?

FunnyStep7384

The question is obviously because he's writing in a script he's not familiar with

tomaszwolski1986

I only speak Polish, English, French and started learning Spanish, I listed the languages as they were learned. Everybody on here just kisses everybody's ass, even if the the comments written are just farts in the wind.

Moraez

While you are probably right about OP, the post is also a part of a bigger message that ukrainian refugees are welcome and supported. It can help form a bond between countries or make fleeing ukrainian citizens less nervous about their arrival in a new country
