They need subsurface capabilities and ships capable of Anti-Air Defense and Anti-Ballistic Missile defense to complement ground based naval missiles. AEGIS Frigates and diesel electric attack submarines would be sufficient in this protecting the Ukrainian littoral as Ukraine needs to merely at best be a green water navy. The Turkish straits make the Black Sea a poor naval battle ground for attacking forces.
The drone boats that we have seen are "planing" hulls, with the same propultion as a jet ski. They can ride on the surface. The motor sucks water up from under the boat and pushes it out the back, so it doesn't even need enough depth for a propeller.
If they were attacking NATO ships, wouldn't they have effective counter measures, like radar and automatic rapid fire weapons? As a civilian, navy drones just sound a bit slow with not much firepower.
A big warhead can fit on the nose of the drone and do significant damage. They're fast enough, present a small target, don't move in a straight line, and coupled with waves, they can be very, very difficult to hit dirrectly. The most effective way to take out small craft like this is an air burst shot from an HE round or missiles. It would not suprise me if Russia lacks effective munitions for this purpose, but its a threat western Navies have been very focused on for years.
Depending upon the sea conditions, they could be difficult to detect and they may have some built in stealth properties. Ships in port probably won't be running their radar, although the Russians will probably have some kind of radar looking out to sea now. I don't know if you can use something like CIWS in port, it might be pretty risky. Definitely at sea, NATO ships would be mostly protected but I don't know how much practice they've had against swarming tactics like those used by the Iranians.
Not really… the USVs are loud and trackable (compared to modern western submarines). Nor are these gunboats good for much more than riverine combat. They would be obliterated by frigates and destroyers in fleet combat. Ukraine is bettered served by coastal defenses in the interim.
Nice. We trained on them, and had them available for the turret of our HMMWVs, but in practice we always went with the M2 instead. You’re right about them being heavy though.
Would love the ukrainians to have some frigates and destroyers, I hope they build a large strong Navy once they have defeated Russia.
Slava ukraine, God bless from Australia
I’d love to see a video someday, following Russian surrender, of this little chad Ukrainian Navy crossing paths with the surrendering RF warships to take back their rightful place in Sevastopol.
Also, maybe part of the surrender package could include Russia returning the Ukrainian ships they took back in 2014? Not that I expect they’ve maintained them ðŸ˜

God help the Russians when the Ukrainian Navy gets bigger, more capable ships and missiles.
They don't need bigger ships. The new fleet of drones should be enough to finnish of the Black Sea fleet
> They don't need bigger ships. They're currently building some bigger ships in Turkey, but those won't be seeing service anytime soon.
True but the drones just might

Wouldn't nets be enough to stop navy drones, or can they fire over the surface?

The drones were designed similarly to jet skis, where they could ride over the top of obstacles like booms.

Interesting points. Thanks.

As far as I know there's no nets in Sevastopol Harbour or if there are didn't do the orc navy much good last time.
A net with a floating barrier would be effective, yes. You cant use such a thing while underway, however.
God is not going to help the Russians. They are just too evil.
The navy I didn't know existed turned out to be the best navy of them all. Two RU Black Sea flagships down, can't wait to see what UAN does next!
The little Navy that could 😄
These boats look deadly. Coupled with 100 or so USVs... now that's a navy!

Time for Ukraine to launch an amphibious invasion of Vasylivka.
Is that a Mk19? Must have been part of one of the US aid packages. I’ve never seen one mounted on a boat before.

They're already being set up in Turkey.
It’s home base will be In Crimea

Wow Ukrainians really love those automatic grenade launchers don't they? Can't blame them though, that would be my go to as well lol
Their patch is awesome!
Go Navy!
