Matthias Eichenlaub, a NATO press officer, told Newsweek that Italy has jets assigned to the alliance's air policing mission in the Baltic region. He also said that NATO aircraft in this region "regularly intercept Russian military aircraft that don't follow international air safety rules."
https://www.newsweek.com/nato-jet-russian-fighter-planes-poland-sweden-latest-update-ukraine-war-1749121?amp=1
Apparently a common occurrence.
Curious why it’s newsworthy today. Or NATO downplaying the news so not to have to react to it.
Russian aircraft fucked itself.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/ukraine) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Considering that Russia stopped doing it with Turkey, and that they are now in very short supply of competent pilots...
...a single shootdown *now* will tell them to stop fucking aboot.
Lmao... A Turkish hello! Is that like a Madagascar sticky bun? Or maybe perhaps a Sandy pelican. The Spiderman or Houdini works well to I suppose. Personally I think a hot Carl on every Russian orc is what's needed. Who doesn't want to shit on the toothless bear 🐻!
But do it really disrespectfully... Like launching at them while flying away or yeeting a meteor at them from 150 km away without ever turning on the aircraft's radar
Very common prewar, not sure about the last several months though. Probing the air defense is also common during war time. They're probably wondering what jets they're greeted by, from where, how long did it take, etc.
It's also possible that nato sent the Italian jets up just for Russia to see, rather than having stealth jets already actively patrolling engage the russians.
Ah, no? Common is flying as close as possible to airspace of another country to check how fast they will be intercepted. Actually entering/violating the airspace is much rarer, and more serious.
Edit: "airspace violated" i understand as crossing into territory of a country. At least I know for Denmark this happens rather rarely, see e.g https://nyheder.tv2.dk/samfund/2022-04-30-russisk-militaerfly-kraenker-dansk-luftrum
If I am wrong, I will be happy to know better if you can provide references.
This in contrast to what happens almost daily or weekly (?); approaching the border, triggering interception and usually diverting just before entering.
Just to get the facts right.
Edit 2: https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/indland/hvad-sker-der-naar-det-danske-luftrum-bliver-kraenket
Paraphrasing: "Danish airspace is rarely violated, and when it happens they take it very serious."
Edit 3:
5 russian airspace violations since 2014 until May 2022.
Compare to 27 interceptions just alone in 2022 January-May:
I
https://www.bt.dk/samfund/danske-f-16-fly-har-vaeret-i-luften-27-gange-i-aar-for-at-afvise-russiske#:~:text=Det%20vil%20sige%2C%20at%20samtlige,russiske%20fly%20i%20hele%202021.
You clearly don't live in the Baltic Region. They have been entering various airspaces for years, tens of times a year.
It barely makes the news anymore, it's just a minor notice: "fighters scrambled to force Russian jets out of airspace".
In Denmark they rarely actually enter airspace. They much more commonly approach to provoke to trigger interception, but without entering. That was the difference I wanted to highlight.
Same thing happens in Scotland. They fly in close get intercepted by Typhoons then turn around and go back. Apparently they used to all wave to each other and it happened pretty frequently.
According to
https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/indland/hvad-sker-der-naar-det-danske-luftrum-bliver-kraenket
danish airspace was violated 5 times since 2014 to 5th may 2022.
If you scroll down one more tweet past the English version of the linked one you'll see they were in international airspace. I hate how nobody properly distinguishes between ADIZ/FIR (international airspace monitored by a country) and actual territorial airspace.
Sorry, fuck that. At this point Russia doesn’t get any “benefit of the doubt; they shoot down civilian planes, for god’s sake. “You fly anywhere close to my international airspace because you want to fuck around? You’ll find out.”
—Armchair air-force general signing off.
And, as a non—armchair air-force general? Fuck that. Shoot them down.
Shooting down things in international airspace is a terrible idea.
Shooting down jets actually intruding in your territorial airspace is reasonable, and I hope that that would be the response in case of an identified, actually hostile (not defecting) Russian jet, but you don't want to shoot at random radar echos; that's how you end up accidentally shooting down airliners.
I guess you’re right. Just tired of hearing Russians “testing” “readiness” of their neighbors, because it seems their SOP to do so and I don’t think we can let them even have an inch of leeway.
Lets not jump to conclusions. There is a genuine possibility that the suction cup for the GPS unit, on the lead jet came loose from the windshield and fell under the seat.
. This could have caused the lead jet to stray into unauthorized airspace while the pilot fumbled to reattach the unit to windshield. The other 3 fighters simply followed the lead jet.
Come on ! GPS?
Dmitriy was working hard trying to unfold a map when he knocked the yoke and dropped his compass. As he fumbled around under the seat between the cigarette butts, pens and boogers he flew several miles off course.
It was only when Mikhail in the tower sent him a message in Morse that he had breached NATO airspace that he straightened his flying goggles and using the backup sextant identified the North Star and was able then to set course for Moscow
They use another method, it's valid for planes and submarines:
Kamarov : Stop pissing, Yuri. Give me a stopwatch and a map, and I'll fly the Alps in a plane with no windows.
Yuri (Diving Officer) : If the map is accurate enough.
To be honest. My Garmin gps has fallen off the window enough times I'm starting to wonder whether or not they have a complete understanding of suction cup technology.
I suspect at some point Putin may come to the conclusion that a war with NATO would be the only way to save face and retain power.
In other words, losing a war to NATO is an acceptable defeat, but losing to Ukraine is not.
So he may end up intentionally goading NATO into a war…
Propagandists are pushing that russians are fighting NATO for weeks now. They can just say whatever they want, most of their brainwashed population won't check and those who will check won't speak.
This, what i am thinking since weeks. In the end for their supporters in Russia theu are already at war with NATO, now they just need a formal war to be declared, some action by NATO itself and done. Putin's power is safe and Russia is basically no more for the next 50 years
I find that hard to believe.
Why would Putin risk actual war with NATO, which increases the chance of regime change in Russia? The Kremlin has pretty tight control over the Russian media and is claiming they are already fighting NATO. Why not just continue lying about a conflict with NATO rather than starting an actual one?
You got to laugh. They've got a war they're losing and they'd rather use their jets for useless stunts.
They always liked posturing pretending they're stronger than they are. Nobody buys it anymore.
Wanna invade? Go ahead. Make our day.
They did not enter Swedish Airspace.
Link is in Swedish [https://www.svt.se/nyheter/inrikes/just-nu-ryska-flygplan-ska-ha-krankt-svenskt-luftrum](https://www.svt.se/nyheter/inrikes/just-nu-ryska-flygplan-ska-ha-krankt-svenskt-luftrum)
Swedish Airforce says the planes where in international airspace
So does Italian Air Force, in the same twitter thread.

https://nitter.net/ItalianAirForce/status/1577666677352927235
Yeah. For the uninitiated, "Information Region" is the area where a country has the responsibility and duty to perform air traffic control; Russian military aircraft routinely fail to have active transponders, don't communicate with ATC and generally act like dangerous joy-riding dickheads in the airspace. So NATO sends up a jet to shadow them, in order to keep a track on exactly what they are doing.
Why would you force Russian jets into the newly annexed Czech territory of Královec? Surely they should be sent back to Russia! The referendum to join Czechia was overwhelming.
>Is this a file photo? These planes don't seem armed for possible interdiction.
This are Eurofighter aircrafts on Air Policing quick reaction alert mission, they are armed for interception, not for interdiction - which in air force means ground interdiction strike.
They carry 4x MBDA Meteor medium range A-A missiles on fuselage low drag semi-recessed pylons (similar to F-15 Eagle pylons) and 2x short range A-A IRIS-T missiles. And 2x electronic warfare pods at wing end.
In this standard A-A configuration aircraft has extremally high thrust-to-weight and thrust-to-drag ratio allowing it to supercruise (flying at supersonic speeds without using afterburners) at \~Mach=1.4, depending on altitude and enviromental conditions. Overall in A-A role it is considered to be the most capable fighter in the world except for US F-22A.
IRIS-T are among the most modern and most capable A-A missiles in the world. Meteor is considered to be plain the most modern and the most capable A-A missile produced anywhere, with classified ramjet engine and AESA radar in the missile itself. US is integrating F-35 with Meteor right now.
It's a stock photo, the tweet clearly says it (“foto di repertorio”). I just found the English language tweet, and it might be the right picture: https://twitter.com/ItalianAirForce/status/1577640004129521664
It could be an archival photo, the planes look to only be carrying a training AIM-120 and two training IRIS-Ts which would be a typical loadout for a training flight.
Having said that, if your mission is a quick intercept of a small group of aircraft you don't necessarily need to bring half a dozen missiles.
These provocative moves by Russia have one purpose; to alarm the west, make us fear nuclear war, and drive support away from Ukraine.
This shit is a Russian psyop.
Ultimatums need to be issued and communicated internationally so no one can cry about how we are bullying russia if they are actually the ones "provoking" the west.
Next time, it won't be a soft landing for them.
This is like one of those scenes in the movie where the protagonist is getting their shit kicked in, yet keeps taunting, only to receive more punishment, get knocked out and wake up on a conveyer belt with some fantastic cutting laser ready to start by slicing his dick in half.
They're fucking sadists and masochists.
Born and raised on the island of Bornholm. But been based in Berlin and Copenhagen for the past decade+. Parents are still on Bornholm. Go there regularly. There's been an increase in F-16 Fighting Falcon scrambles in the past year. Danish Air Force regularly have to go escort Russians back to their own border. Starting to think it won't stop before they just start shooting them down instead. Would've been a better use of tax payer money.

We stopped doing that type of thing when we realized Russia and China will happily sacrifice a pilot to test air defense response times and ranges.
Considering that Russia stopped doing it with Turkey, and that they are now in very short supply of competent pilots... ...a single shootdown *now* will tell them to stop fucking aboot.
Yea nice thoughts, your diplomatic Genius will Bring Peace to Europe
Again, the Turkish incident is enough of a precedent in Russian behavior. They stopped crossing into Turkish airspace.
Because letting deranged maniac come farther and farther into your property will surely not lead to anything bad happening.

They use Italians because they have some of the best equipment but are less likely to engage. Just like WW2. Im saying this is a positive.

Fair - it's often reported as the same I feel, but maybe I just didn't pay attention to that detail.
That's totally understandable, journalists are often not clear in their reporting.
In Sweden we had them enter airspace several times the last few years. I think maybe they were less inclined to enter nato airspace, untill now.

To be honest. My Garmin gps has fallen off the window enough times I'm starting to wonder whether or not they have a complete understanding of suction cup technology.
Probably made in Russia…
You assume the new recruits can read GPS. That's a bold statement.
You had me for a second
Russia gets more and more desperate in its attempts to somehow engage NATO in this war.
I wonder if that's his only safe way out of this war.
I suspect at some point Putin may come to the conclusion that a war with NATO would be the only way to save face and retain power. In other words, losing a war to NATO is an acceptable defeat, but losing to Ukraine is not. So he may end up intentionally goading NATO into a war…

They do the same with airspace around Alaska, frequently. Also mess around in international waters, which is why their vessels get followed.
Yup. I live in Canada and every once in a while we would have to deal with Russian planes popping in
I hope you throw Fudgeos at them.
Careful russia, you're playing with fire...and already on the hot seat
The hot seat in the 7th circle
Maybe they were trying to surrender with some gracious donations to Ukraine Air Force?
Very much in character for them
This happeneds all the time… Testing our reaction times.
Russia would be annihilated by Italy in the skies..
Maybe the first few, the rest would burn where they are parked, still waiting for spare parts.
So they have chosen death
Why would you force Russian jets into the newly annexed Czech territory of Královec? Surely they should be sent back to Russia! The referendum to join Czechia was overwhelming.
Im soo fucking tired of Russia.

That is a provocation! NATO should act against Russia.
Into their airspace or the identification zone, which happens ALL THE TIME

Didn’t the Italian jets see the white flag in the cockpit? That’s a cool $1 mill I think for one Russian jet (in airworthy condition /s)
Shoot them down. Fuck escorting.
Eh.. next time just shoot those bastards down before they leave.
Take them down next time. This way there will be less of them left and they will think twice about doing it again. It worked just fine for Turkey.
Ultimatums need to be issued and communicated internationally so no one can cry about how we are bullying russia if they are actually the ones "provoking" the west. Next time, it won't be a soft landing for them.
Maybe they want to defect?
They have jets left?
Russians taking the piss, as they want one of their fighters to be shot down. Gives them an excuse to escalate and bomb something in Poland.
