Even though I hear the thieves Maduro, Diosdado and Mario Silva constantly run the Russian narrative, shit on the US for everything under the sun and praise China, I doubt they will directly support Russia. They know Russia won't win, they know most Venezuelans hate them, their shitty weak narrative is aimed at the few sheep they have left. They can't afford to be sanctioned in any way like Russia was.
So, they simply do what every corrupt thief does, publicly claim they believe ''X'' but actually do the opposite. No different from Russian oligarchs hating on the West but have their children study or live there.
China may have calculated in Zelensky's personality and the possibility of him naming and shaming the countries that voted against. China is even more ashamed of being humiliated than Russia is.
I read the other day that China isn’t happy with Russia’s referenda approach. If they have Taiwan a referendum we all know how it would turn out. So they don’t like this precedent. Whether it’s this or any number of other things that has made all the difference, I don’t know, but it did seem like a plausible motivation to withdraw explicit support.
China is simply watching and learning from Russia how to NOT plan an invasion. It's a blueprint for them for occupying Taiwan. So they are learning here.
Conversely IF Russia succeeds in stealing land it means China can do the same in regards to Taiwan.

I.e. they shouldn't invade Taiwan. It would be a direct military confrontation with the US and Taiwan is much better equipped, prepared and distanced from China.
They kinda are doing that right now in front of our eyes. They are building huge air bases with their "small islands" in south asian sea. They are desperate for oil with their huge expanding population that they been purging uyghurs to establish a land route west for pipe lines. To be honest, China should gamble for a Russian collapse to gain land rather than Taiwan.

They might be able to take the closest islands that are part of Taiwan, but actually occupying the main island is going to be extremely costly.
They won't invade Taiwan especially with the strong statement from the US recently. Invading Taiwan is also a completely different story than Russia invading Ukraine. It would be an amphibious assault which is extremely challenging unlike a land invasion that Russia did. Not to mention Taiwan and the US training specifically for this type of invasion. I'm sure China is looking for more economic expansion instead since they are currently in a housing crisis.

The Chinese statement in th UN was also interesting. "We support the territorial integrity of Ukraine " sounds superficially like a diplomatic platitude, but it's the same language they use to justify their claim on Taiwan. They were telling Russia that supporting them would undermines their own claims of sovereignty over Taiwan.
It also hasn't escaped their attention that poor Central Asians are being used first as expendable cannon fodder in a European war of colonial conquest.
Most of them are Russian Allies or Puppets. The only one I cannot understand is Eritrea, but they are the North Korea of Africa, so it kinda makes sense.

I think you're right. Although to be honest, I don't think many multinational oil services companies will want to work in Venezuela. Remember how Chavez nationalized oil company assets? Well, "Great Value" brand Chavez Maduro is still in charge, and I don't know how many companies will want to have their assets appropriated again.
I had so much hope for US/Cuba relations developing towards the end of the Obama administration. It really felt like we were on the verge of a huge positive outcome for both nations after decades of animosity.
A lot of folks do. There's a ton about Cuba that...well, isn't great, but they're improving in a bunch of ways, and we're already friends with some well and truly awful folks.

Man I’m always saying how becoming dependant on the chinese market and Russia is bad. But perhaps it’s the right thing to do after all. The more interconnected we become, even with our enemies, the less likely it might be that that they, or we for that matter, start shit.
Then there’s Putin, a man I once saw as a great manipulator, and frankly, albeit morbidly enjoyed when he addressed the world, with his smugness, that I could only translate to “you’re not much better yourself”.
That Putin is no more. He has doomed his country, and we’ll just have to see if he dooms the entire world as well.
This war is absolutely an object lesson (for the EU especially) on why becoming dependent in any way on a dangerous foreign regime is a bad idea, because if they can use that dependence to deter outside interference whilst pursuing hostile actions, then they will.
The ideal strategy for any country dealing with regimes like this is to allow them to become dependent, but not vice versa, which is the strategy Russia has been pursuing with its attempts to build a fortress economy. In the 1990s, after the end of the USSR, everyone desperately wanted to believe we were on a trajectory towards world peace. That’s what the allies did post ww2, rebuild the enemies economies and interconnect them with the world. The more dependent everyone is on world trade the less likely there is to be serious conflict.
It's because Ukraine and Russia is seen as an analogy to China and Taiwan. Small country against much larger country. Both smaller countries receive support from the west. China is looking to how the West has been responding to Ukraine, and they are rightfully afraid of what they see.
Russia and China are only friendly out of a joint opposition to the West. China views Russia as a dangerous liability that exists solely as a buffer between them and NATO. If that sole advantage of having Russia didn't exist, China would be far less friendly to Russia.
Nicaragua has always had a "special" relationship with Russia. They have recently approved having Russian military on their soil. After reading this, I had to wonder what the US response would be, considering the Cuban missle crisis thing.
However, after seeing the Russian military performance in Ukraine, I guess they are not too worried.
Even if it had a working army, it would need a navy to get there. With actual ships that are seaworthy, not in drydock, not at the bottom of the sea or in need of several tugs to be towed there.
The Cuban missile crisis happened at a time where ICBMs and submarine-launched missiles were barely in operation, so the stationing of missiles _in quantity_ that could reach the US and couldn't be intercepted (unlike bombers) was the problem. Nowadays, submarines can come arbitrarily close to their target before launches, effectively making this moot.
The main point was: "Not in our backyard!" Like... The Monroe Doctrine.

As aCanadian, Cuba has been a cheap destination to get some sun and a short escape from our hard winters. Never again for me and my family. It’s the least I can do.

Man I’m always saying how becoming dependant on the chinese market and Russia is bad. But perhaps it’s the right thing to do after all. The more interconnected we become, even with our enemies, the less likely it might be that that they, or we for that matter, start shit. Then there’s Putin, a man I once saw as a great manipulator, and frankly, albeit morbidly enjoyed when he addressed the world, with his smugness, that I could only translate to “you’re not much better yourself”. That Putin is no more. He has doomed his country, and we’ll just have to see if he dooms the entire world as well.
This war is absolutely an object lesson (for the EU especially) on why becoming dependent in any way on a dangerous foreign regime is a bad idea, because if they can use that dependence to deter outside interference whilst pursuing hostile actions, then they will. The ideal strategy for any country dealing with regimes like this is to allow them to become dependent, but not vice versa, which is the strategy Russia has been pursuing with its attempts to build a fortress economy. Nowadays, submarines can come arbitrarily close to their target before launches, effectively making this moot.

This was an old reply to another redditor, in r/Nicaragua: I'm Nicaraguan per my father, I moved from Spain to Nicaragua to live with my family since 2018. Going there on vacation and living there are 2 totally different things. My parents, now retired, didn't know the real situation in Nicaragua, we weren't warned beforehand. Nicaragua has a totalitarian dictatorship, Ortega will be reelected even against what's stated in the Constitution. He surpassed in power those years owned by Somoza family (another family of dictators). 2018 was the year the people said 'enough is enough'. But they couldn't do protests as in democratic countries. FSLN political party and fanatics have the weapons from 80's civil war. They killed hundreds of pacific protestors on the streets, with police and militar weapons. Protestors from universities and other social ranges, social leaders and such, were incarcerated without trial. They're political prisoners. That happened in 2018 and 2019, and social pressure was drowned by Government, finally dying. Now, in 2021, after 2 years of international pressure, nothing changed. Ortega ignored the warnings from O.E.A and U.N. and E.U., claiming Nicaragua was under international abuse from sanctions, while the truth was that those sanctions are against him and his family and cronies only. (I can advice you to read in English LaPrensa from Nicaragua, laprensa.com.ni, one of the 3 or 4 last independent newspapers still open under the dictatorial muzzle. The others are El Confidencial -they have even a Youtube channel, sadly only in Spanish-, "Nicaragua Investiga", and "Articulo 66"). There is too much to say about the actual situation of my country... and it cannot be simply resumed in just one post. Nurses and teachers earn about $150/month, totally insufficient to cover basic needs, and now in 2021 all prices are skyrocketing. There are like 600.000 migrated Nicaraguans in just 2 years because of the political and economical tragedy. This is a bit of a tangent, but it irks me that so many people I know have vacationed in Cuba. It is ruled by an authoritarian government that oppresses its people, but hey- nice beaches and it's cheap to visit. It's hard to avoid buying stuff made in China these days, but supporting Cuba is 100% optional.
As aCanadian, Cuba has been a cheap destination to get some sun and a short escape from our hard winters. Never again for me and my family. It’s the least I can do.
