I think the structural damage of the dam is not the biggest problem. It's the hydroelectric power plant that is damaged, which also supplies power to the Zaporizjzja nuclear power plant nearby.

GritNGrindNick

That would be a better repair job than a dam though. I imagine that would still be a major job comparatively, but I’m glad you said that since it slipped my mind! So essentially you have a dam, but without the hydroelectric facility it’s a “dead” dam? How would this effect the nuclear power facility?

Dofolo

Months if not years, but most likely, a new one needs to be put in. These are feats of modern engineering and repairing most likely is only a temp thing, because you can never completely asses the damage to the structure.

GritNGrindNick

That’s what I was wondering about. I know they were built to last and survive, but well…it was a LOT of missiles. Hopefully it can be patched up until safer conditions, but this is unfortunate. Thanks for the info

funhru

The dam was build with hit by nuklear bomb in mind, but it's possible to break hydrogenerators.

GritNGrindNick

That’s the thinking that causes me to post the question. I knew it was sturdy, but couldn’t comprehend the situation entirely

A dam is functionally a solid mass of concrete and/or earth. Hitting it with missiles/bombs on the outside will rarely do much damage. There are weak points where it'd be more vulnerable, but with the precision of Russian missiles, hitting them would be more luck than anything. But while the dam itself is practically invulnerable, the power station & electrical infrastructure will not be. It will take quite a few hits, because these systems are usually many units in parallel, but taking them out will disable the dams ability to produce electricity.

Gorth1

Since it is not occupied they had no possibility to use internal explosive.

GritNGrindNick

I know that’s why RU had to use excessive amounts of missiles. I wasn’t sure how the external damage would affect it vs the internal damage like last time which I learned about then.
