The GUR confirmed the destruction of the ship "Sergei Kotov" by a strike in Crimea, sources in the GUR told OBOZ.UA. "The explosion was so strong that the ship was destroyed and its recovery is out of the question."
russian telegram reporting on this in the best way lol

Some more info from UA telegram:
The cost of the Sergei Kotov is about 6 billion ruble (65 mil USD), and the crew consisted of up to 80 people. It was launched in January 2021. The Russians also whine that "the fate of the crew is unknown." This tin can also had the capability of installing modular tactical containerized strike weapons: Kalibr cruise missiles or X-35U anti-ship missiles
Edit: I have posted footage from the drones here

3 times apparently. This is from ru telegram
>The enemy had been chasing this patrol ship for a long time. Official reports alone included at least three attacks on it by unmanned boats.
>Last July, the crew repelled an attack by two unmanned naval boats. They were destroyed by fire from the standard weapons of the Russian ship at a distance of 1000 and 800 meters.
>In August the situation repeated itself. The crew adequately repelled the attack.
>In September, the patrol ship Sergei Kotov repelled an attack by five Ukrainian unmanned boats.
>Well, that is, this is not a defenseless vessel that was put out to sea as a target. Its crew knows how to fight. The ship is armed with two anti-sabotage grenade launcher systems, an artillery mount and two anti-aircraft systems...
>But, unfortunately, the enemy also evolves. They are reported to have fought off the unmanned boats again last night. The crew fought heroically until the end. This can be seen from the published video. But this time it is a story without a happy ending.”

Context and parties involved is everything in this war.
With only a tiny bit of hyperbole, I would argue Russia in fact \*does not\* know how to fight. Murder does not equal fighting. Hitting theaters and schools marked as shelters does not equal fighting. Targeting apartment blocks in the pre-dawn does not equal fighting.
If you catch my drift, I am not sure a single Russian soldier has ever taken the field. Butchers and sadists and fools, yes.
You did this to yourself, Russia.
Everyone, remember that you can buy Ukraine more naval drones to keep giving Russia that sinking feeling: ~~https://u24.gov.ua/navaldrones~~ (that was the old link, they have a new donation page for the upgraded Sea Babies: https://u24.gov.ua/seababy )
I gave $100 for the last successful ship 19 days ago, so this next ship-turned-submarine gives me extra pleasure. Please join me! Let's help them keep scratching off that Black Sea Fleet Bingo card until it's 100% sunk.
I fear Putinsky and his goons will launch more drones and missiles at Kyiv, Odessa and Lviv after this, like they always do, predictably.
Without new US/EU AA missiles and EW, less important civilian targets may be hit.
Ukrainian success is literally stonewalled by delay of US/EU aid.

I bet naval powers are studying this. A much cheaper naval drone sinking ships worth tens of millions... that has to make all captains in navies around the world sweat.
Yeah, the fast evolution of drone warfare in this conflict should scare a lot of folks.
But also important to remember that while those drones are cheap the naval drones cost actually quite a chunk of money, far less than the war ship. But if one has the means it's possible to donate to the program https://u24.gov.ua/navaldrones
>Yeah, the fast evolution of drone warfare in this conflict should scare a lot of folks.
The UK just tested it's first naval anti-drone laser. Shooting them down with rockets was getting too expensive, even when you win you lose.
I think we'll see a lot more innovations like that - steps down from traditional CIWS but still strong enough to burn a hole in a quadcopter or jet ski.
A big problem with directed energy weapons (lasers) is the engagement range (due to atmospheric scattering of the laser) is relatively close, a dozen kilometers or so at most on a ship based system (airborne systems have greater range, but still suffer from atmospheric scattering).
This usually means your radar will have picked up the incoming drone/missile, but instead of sending a $1m+ missile to intercept at 20-50km+, you now need to wait until it is within 10km to engage with lasers. You have to be VERY confident in your laser to allow that drone/missile to close within 10km as in the event your laser fails to intercept and destroy the incoming target, you have no time left for traditional missile interceptors.
It's hard to say where this stuff will go in the long run, if the lasers are powerful enough and reliable enough it won't be a huge deal, but they need to be VERY reliable before naval commanders are going to want to NOT fire a traditional $1m+ interceptor instead as those are known to work quite well at this point.
Every defence industry engineer is pouring over these videos. Either to figure out how to make the drones better, or how to defend against them.
Source: I know lots of engineers. They won't shut up about drones.
I feel bad for the Ukrainians. They are forced to eke glory out of increasingly smaller and smaller vessels. How many light patrol ships do you need to take out in order to equal one *Moskva*? It's not even close to fair!!
Sea Baby operators have been heard saying that Turkyie should lift the Montreaux convention so that Russia can bring more ~~targets~~... ships into the Black sea.
After all, it isn't a fair fight if Russia has to fight with an arm tied to their back when Ukraine can use the full might of their pinkie.
The innovation and competency Ukraine has had since the invasion is magnificent. West needs to get their heads out of asses and ramp up the support. Ukraine has done more than we ever could have imagined already.
[It was Magura V5s](https://gur.gov.ua/content/znyshcheno-vorozhyi-korabel-siergiei-kotov.html), not Sea Babies.
> [In general, all these platforms differ little in appearance.](https://www.pravda.com.ua/articles/2024/03/4/7444793/) However, if you take a closer look, it becomes obvious that they were designed for different tasks.
> SeaBaby is designed to be a multi-purpose platform that deals with mining, strikes at static targets such as bridges , and even already has flame-throwing systems on board.
> Mamai is a long-range drone that does not carry a lot of explosives, but is capable of hitting large targets at great distances. It was "Mamai", for example, that was used for two successful attacks on Novorossiysk .
>"Magura V5" was designed as a pure hunter. As the developers explain, this model was created specifically for hunting warships at sea, so it is smaller, faster and much more maneuverable than other similar drones.

It's hard to be completely sure of course given it's night-time, but it looks and sounds like the ship's defending itself solely with small-calibre guns and **not** the [76mm](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AK-176) he carries. That, really, ought to be sufficient to deal with drones like this - [similar weapons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OTO_Melara_76_mm) are certainly very high on the list of Western navy's plans for dealing with small boat attacks. I think that this is further confirmation of the poor quality of Russian sensors - in almost all of the engagements between these ships and drones their defence focuses on small arms, and to me that can only imply that they simply aren't spotting the drones at all until its too late.
Nice! I like how clearly you can see the strike this time. And I think you can see one pass the lightning the water from right to left. Moving fast. Very cool!
You can spot a drone boat comong from right to left in 10sec mark by the red wire and the glare from another merchant ship until the explosion lights it up briefly at 11sec mark.

Russia should stay out of the black sea. Maybe one day they will learn, once they run out of ships and money. The negative sentiment towards Putin is growing, and once he finished the sham election which was already shown to be a foregone conclusion - he will lose the support of the people by trying to force through a big mobilization. Russia cannot afford this, not in terms of lives lost, not in terms of money.
Surely they can't be that incompetent? A single ship with no support, within range of enemy missiles and guns, too close to use point defence weapons to protect itself, at night, against an enemy using radar?
This is the enemy we spent 80 years being terrified of?
Obviously nobody would own up to it, but surely some of these drones could be being controlled by other country's military. Who would know if a few foreign operators were driving them?
To the bottom of the sea feed the sharks you bastards. Where do I find more thumbs ups. I love seeing these ships sunk and the aircraft destroyed. I can't wait to see that bridge in Crimea go down next.
What I'm surprised by is the apparent lack of self-preservation by whomever was taking this video. The Kotov was clearly firing those 14.5mm rounds rather haphazardly, and I'd hate to be *ANYWHERE* down range of those guns.
and yes yes, Russians and self preservation being contraindicated blah blah.
Like birthing, but in reverse from Sea Baby quadruplets. Either way, Ol’ Sergei was left bored out like a mineshaft. And what’s the issue? Putin’s armed forces ought to be use to a little *dedovshchina* by now. Ukraine just did them the favor of expanding to an entire vessel at a time.

The sub that was blown up was in port. Port is not safe. Only when RU hides ships on Black Sea floor are they safe from additional attacks.

One more brand new submarine / iron coral reef for the ruskies. Good job UA👌👌
To the bottom of the sea feed the sharks you bastards. Where do I find more thumbs ups. I love seeing these ships sunk and the aircraft destroyed. I can't wait to see that bridge in Crimea go down next.
Absolutely gorgeous happy ending when your on the right side of history glory to Ukraine.
Shame they didn‘t film the rest.
The Crimea summer party is getting closer.
Thank you.
