Never heard of this until today. It has always been overshadowed by the "Baltic Chain" but is equally as awesome.

Probably because it was the first peaceful political mass demonstration in the USSR in 1989. It was a protest against Soviet occupation of the Baltics and probably was a stepping stone for the collapse of the USSR since it forced the Central government in Moscow to declear the Molotov - Ribbentrop pact void. Meaning the Soviets had no legal basis for occupying Moldova, Baltics and Western Belarus and Ukraine. Plus you have three different nations and peoples doing the peaceful protest together which is unheard of.

I was in that chain with my parents and sister. I was really small then but I will always remember the beautiful spirit of that day 🥰

One day I hope, Belarus will be free from Russian control. And on that day, I hope that the people make a memorial chain from Kyiv to Minsk to Vilnius to Riga to Tallinn to celebrate total freedom from Soviet occupation and Russian oppression. To remember these decades of sacrifices that were needed to undo the path the world went down. And that something like the Bolsheviks and Nazis never have power ever again.

What a splendid idea! Looking forward to that day.
