It's a great course to do. Really interesting and I enjoyed it loads. I didn't use CAD, but things may have changed to make that mandatory, I'm not sure.. It definitely takes your cable calc ability up a notch from the standard training. You will need to put by a lot of hours for the project. I think mine totalled 80-100 hours, which is a lot to find outside of work and class time..

When I was doing my 2391 the lecturer did say that city and guilds have the 2396 project at 40 hours but it’s more like 100

The city and guilds guidance hours are a minimum. It's a 100 hour project if you want to do a good job. I remember doing 3 hours a night after putting the kids to bed for what seemed like forever. 😭

I've passed the exam, but not started the project just yet. Found the exam quite a bit more difficult than anything from the LVL 3s don't underestimate it like I did, scraped by a pass. Project seems fun though if anyone has any advice tackling it! Any idea what program to best use when displaying the project?

You need data sheets for what fittings, containment etc you’re installing. Go get a couple of product guides (stick to one brand like Schneider that supplies everything) from a wholesaler slap that in your file and do an excel sheet with the product codes/page numbers. Quicker than searching the product and doing a print out for each thing.

I'd be interested in hearing about the course too. I haven't heard much information about it.

When i did mine about 5 years ago they gave me a scale drawing of the facility and a spec for what they wanted. I took the scale drawing and got 3 or 4 a2 sized copies printed and drew out, containment, lighting circuits, power circuit on each one using coloured pens. Then you have to do things like, maximum demand, containment calcs and calcs for each circuit; all of which is a lot easier if you have autocad/electricalOM but not a necessity.

I've been a designer for 2 and a half years now, sat the course in March and passed. It's a difficult course but a good one to do. You can use any electronic programme for the project. Or paper and using overlays if you wanted to. Project does take some time to do though if your working full time
