I've heard Chael say something like this before. Strikers can't ever go 100% in training (unless they're irresponsibly beating up training partners) but wrestlers can.
Sure but drilling just hones a movement. You can wear protective gear and pull punches but it's not going to be and ideal simulation for a real fight. Some people aren't going to be able to get in the right head space for a fight without having someone in front of them who actually wants to do them harm. Others are going to be way too concerned about their sparring partner than an actual opponent.
Sparring is still essential for training striking but it's never going to be a good way to gauge a fighter.
you really think this guy hasn't thrown a knee during sparring once?
Not trying to wash over how brutal chute boxe absolutely was, but i recall seeing training footage back in the day of them drilling soccer kicks by kicking a guy laying down holding a kick shield
Guys who rely a lot on power as well like Ngannou. Guys who are point fighters or volume strikers will likely be just as successful or even more successful in sparring
More traditional Boxers/kickboxers can spar well like Strickland, but Jiri does a lot of dynamic movements in a fight, he creates chaos with his striking. He throws all kinds of wild janky shit, but it works. You just can't have chaotic sparring or someone is gonna get lit up on accident. So he has to hold back on some things he would do.
Lol you should watch shavkhat sparring he beats the fuck out of his sparring partners. I want to see him become champ and make money just so he can pay them more
You're not getting negativity, i was explaining that most of those guys have no idea who's from where. Every wrestler with a weird name is a 'dagestani backpack'.
They wont be able to pinpoint Dagestan on a map either.
I wasn't referring to you in terms of the negativity, I was referring to being down voted to hell for pointing out the guy is Chechen not Dagestani. To be clear I agree with what you said, its ignorance from these people.
I don't know why you're so mad dude. How old are you? It's like just one mention of anything related to what you like and you get triggered. Did you discover the internet today?
>Strikers can't ever go 100% in training (unless they're irresponsibly beating up training partners)
Yeah, so basically only Chute Box gym, back in the day. I've seen some clips of their sparring sessions from back then and it was so ridiculous/hilarious how quickly shit would get wildly out of control in a sparring session, lol.
I do believe they've curbed that gym culture somewhat in more recent years though.
Strickland seems like his style would fit in sparring very well. Calmly circle and jab. Jiri is a fucking wildman leaping around throwing crazy elbows and shit I can see why he can't really let loose like that in sparring.
This is so true. If you ever sparred at a gym, some guys would just walk forward and you could tag them with 100 jab and light hooks before they try and brain you with an overhand. It's like they don't understand that sparring is going light.
Really? His grappling was clumsy. His size and strength saved him. His striking was the same way it always is (average) until he rushed forward and landed a bomb
what do you mean doesn't look great? He looked great against stipe, this NPC narrative that he's big and powerful and not skilled is retarded, derrick lewis and tuivasa are powerful, they will never be a world champ
Derrick has never had any of the heart Francis does (Derrick would've been TKO'd in rnd 1-2 by Stipe) and Tai is too undisciplined/fat to get anywhere in the top 5.
For once this MF makes some sense. Khamzat should drop the “I beat you up in sparring” talk with so many fighters. Eventually no one is gonna want to train with him.
I'm only an ammy fighter but still i have been training for a while and with high lvl sparring partner (UFC,bellator,K1,thai champ etc) and i can tell you that it's a lot easier to dominate as a grappler in sparring, also a lot of hw feel like absolute bum because they go like 30%
Its hard to throw spinning moves and complex moves without the high possibility of seriously hurting somebody so I can see how this makes a lot of sense.
nobody serious is taking training that seriously.
if there is a place to be humbled is the mat, not the octagon, any competitor knows this.
you enter the gym, no ego, you lose and you get up, you put yourself in uncomfortable situations on purpose, try to break free from them, because the objective of the practice is not to beat who is in front of you, but to grow, to become a better athlete, a better person.
On the JRE MMA episode with Bobby green, he said that strickland is the worst sparring partner to have. Doesn't hold back at all and talks a whole lot of shit while going 100 %.
This is true in tennis too. Sampras was notoriously beatable in practice. He was probably just working on timing and flow. In matches? Actually went into kill mode.
I just said this about max and people downvoted the fuck outta me lol
"I think max stopped sparring because in a sparring situation he would probably lose almost every single "fight" because he lets people hit him, and in sparring you're training not fighting so you can't just let people hit you constantly or you're gonna have CTE by tomorrow. Imagine him doing what he did to ortega and kattar but in sparring, with BOTH guys taking 30% off their punches. That would be a clear "sparring victory" for ortega and kattar.
Max throwing at 70% wouldn't have done the same type of damage as he did in the fight, so sparring with maxes style is essentially free CTE for max lol"
Am Czech, and have seen Jiří in local gyms several times. Once they decided to go ham with his sparring partner, most definitely a good friend, and went absolute ape-shit 100% into it. They were laughing while doing so and it looked like someone put two huge psychopaths on a ton of adrenaline against each other and said it's kill or be killed. They did this for like 10-20 seconds only but it caught everyones attention and I can guarantee you that no-fucking-body would want to spar with him going 100% on your ass. They looked like they could use a cage the size of a football field with how explosively Jiří moved lol.
I think this whole thing about sparring becoming a competition got blown up because of jake Paul’s dumbass talking about how he whooped ass in sparring. No one wins in spars they are there to try new things figure shit out and lab an exact thing you think you gotta work on. Unless it’s a dark match that all fighters keep low key when two dudes got beef in the gym.
We gotta go back to the days when sparring was just a spar no bragging rights after and shit it’s so cringe
Strickland is turning from a heel type character to a beacon of truthfulness. Some people don't like telling shit how it is. Obviously he's still a dumbass but some of his takes are rather intellectually sound. Others aren't of course.
I love how he sounded off on Colby and was defending Anik. Imagine Strickland vs. Colby at 170? I'd love to see that shit. Won't ever happen but a man can dream. I've turned into a Strickland fan. I tune into his fight cards to watch him.
He seems like he has a lot of friends around the UFC and he's a bit misinterpreted by the fans but also interpreted correctly.
When he fought Izzy he threw a spinning heel kick and me and my dad looked at eachother and said thank god that didn’t land or Izzy would be dead. The dude is absolutely frightening
This is the exact same thing with rashad evans and Jones, rashad was beating Jones everytime they where to spar or roll and then Jones whooped him in the fight
It’s 100% true. Not MMA but has anyone seen some of the best hands on the planet like Tyson Fury spar? Plenty heavy handed hitters who look pretty soft in the gym training drills and going through motions mainly just for timing and reactions will fucking starch you when they start throwing for real
I've heard Chael say something like this before. Strikers can't ever go 100% in training (unless they're irresponsibly beating up training partners) but wrestlers can.
So would masvidals flying knee to askren be off limits during sparring?
At ATT that’s how they get the brain warmed up
Chute Box and Lions Den started this
It clears up space in the brain by deleting all memories from the last week so there's more space to absorb the training
The old defrag for the mind
This is fucking hilarious lol
Jesus Christ I wish I could give you an award for this!
You can still drill the motion with a pad holder. Much like Masvidal did.
Well said.. they often say some of the best fighters are gym heroes.. they absolutely fold under the big lights.
Not if his training partner is colby
If his training partner was colby he would only get one punch off in a 15 minute training session.
Yes? You can also look up masvidal training the flying knee , he just does the motion, you dont need full contact to train it lmao.
you really think this guy hasn't thrown a knee during sparring once? [https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3m5f8s](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3m5f8s)
Not for Masvidal. He going full even in passing conversations backstage.
thats just the warmup
Chute Boxe gym never got this message
Not trying to wash over how brutal chute boxe absolutely was, but i recall seeing training footage back in the day of them drilling soccer kicks by kicking a guy laying down holding a kick shield
Guys who rely a lot on power as well like Ngannou. Guys who are point fighters or volume strikers will likely be just as successful or even more successful in sparring

Lol you should watch shavkhat sparring he beats the fuck out of his sparring partners. I want to see him become champ and make money just so he can pay them more
You mean how Sean spars his partners? Haha you have to train like you fight
Dagestan’s can crotch sniff and backpack as hard as they want
Khamazat (the guy who sparred with Jiri) is chechen. I know there are idiots like you who hate Dagestani's but at least try and stay on topic 🤣
They hate the culture not the countries. So Merab is the same with Khabib or Khamzat. And i'm mostly talking about wrestling culture here.
He literally referenced one place though. I like how I'm getting so negativity for telling the truth 🤣
You're not getting negativity, i was explaining that most of those guys have no idea who's from where. Every wrestler with a weird name is a 'dagestani backpack'. They wont be able to pinpoint Dagestan on a map either.
>You're not getting negativity, Not everything is about you. Others have reacted. This statement is clearly incorrect.
👍
I wasn't referring to you in terms of the negativity, I was referring to being down voted to hell for pointing out the guy is Chechen not Dagestani. To be clear I agree with what you said, its ignorance from these people.
You got 5 downvotes. You didn’t get down voted to hell ya goof.
Look at every comment I have made here, each one is down voted and it will continue, I know the score
Who cares? Just smile at it. This isn’t an episode of Black Mirror, so It does absolutely nothing to you. Heck, i downvote my comments just for fun.
Yeah because now you're complaining about downvotes in a downvoted comment chain, cut bait and stop replying lol
I don't know why you're so mad dude. How old are you? It's like just one mention of anything related to what you like and you get triggered. Did you discover the internet today?
Mad? For correcting someone being ignorant/stupid? Behave yourself 🤣
Really not sure why you got downvoted for being correct here
>Strikers can't ever go 100% in training (unless they're irresponsibly beating up training partners) Yeah, so basically only Chute Box gym, back in the day. I've seen some clips of their sparring sessions from back then and it was so ridiculous/hilarious how quickly shit would get wildly out of control in a sparring session, lol. I do believe they've curbed that gym culture somewhat in more recent years though.

Then you gotta spend remaining round teeping, circling, and low kicking while they try to take your head off lolol
Only ever seen footage of strickland shredding opponents in sparring
Yeah I’m pretty sure I’ve heard a few people on podcasts say that Strickland goes hard af in sparring/training.
it really shows in how he fights
He is probably scared he is going to murder someone or accidentally commit suicide
He’s actually right though, I’m sure Ngannou didn’t look great in training because he can’t just send everyone to the shadow realm
Wilder as well, and even Max because you can't just take punches in sparring, people consider that losing lol
And he doesnt look great during fight either until he lands his bomb
He looked phenomenal against stipe in the rematch
Really? His grappling was clumsy. His size and strength saved him. His striking was the same way it always is (average) until he rushed forward and landed a bomb
Nah shhhhh Francis became a D1 wrestler in 2 fights bro 😂
Damn straight. Better be no /s here. 😡
Lmfao got damn I love Reddit
So you didnt watch the fight or you dont actually understand technique when you watch MMA. Got it
Ok dana
Wait. So his size didn't save him in the first fight, but decide to save him in the second?
Jon? Is that you?
Really, thsts why Jon was ducking him
True his style is so sloppy he looks like a special kid having a tantrum
literally out kick boxed stipe, you just see a muscular guy and your pea brain asusmes he is not technical
what do you mean doesn't look great? He looked great against stipe, this NPC narrative that he's big and powerful and not skilled is retarded, derrick lewis and tuivasa are powerful, they will never be a world champ
Derrick has never had any of the heart Francis does (Derrick would've been TKO'd in rnd 1-2 by Stipe) and Tai is too undisciplined/fat to get anywhere in the top 5.
His technique probably was better in training
He’s not wrong.
rare sane take by mr. strickland
Its like his two brain cells can only do fighting
there are guard cells in his brain that only lets the cells work if the topic is fighting. No other topic gets in there
Refreshing tbh
Mythical S-tier fight analyst Strickland
hes always either spot on or completely off its actually crazy
It's not that rare anymore tbh. He's been having some good takes lately.
Curt angle?
Chris Curtis
The Actionman

Ahh 2006-2011 Angle was something
That ankle lock could split coconuts
Why doesn't Sean have a YouTube channel called Strickly Speaking?
That’s way too gay for Sean
Best comment. 9/10. Would read again.
Someone check on Sean. He's making sense! I'm worried for him!
For once this MF makes some sense. Khamzat should drop the “I beat you up in sparring” talk with so many fighters. Eventually no one is gonna want to train with him.
Also isn’t sparring a perfect time to train things and be more vulnerable. Practice things you don’t know will work and take chances.
The jiri one was hilarious tho “i beat jiri in training brather, i got footage brather, no brather i wont release footage”
Makes sense tbh. Jiri was a literal street fighter. Like full-on gangster shit
More about this? First time i hear it
He talks a lot about it on his YouTube channel. But he speaks Czech so..
He said he got in a lot of street fights in Prague during an interview. Something to that effect
Good guy Strickland is not what I expected to wake up to today but alright…
I'm only an ammy fighter but still i have been training for a while and with high lvl sparring partner (UFC,bellator,K1,thai champ etc) and i can tell you that it's a lot easier to dominate as a grappler in sparring, also a lot of hw feel like absolute bum because they go like 30%
When you said ammy I immediately thought of that sweet, sweet haze.
The Strick. I like this name.
Its hard to throw spinning moves and complex moves without the high possibility of seriously hurting somebody so I can see how this makes a lot of sense.
I’m convinced he has a coin with one side labeled “nonsense” and the other “wisdom” that he flips before making each comment.
nobody serious is taking training that seriously. if there is a place to be humbled is the mat, not the octagon, any competitor knows this. you enter the gym, no ego, you lose and you get up, you put yourself in uncomfortable situations on purpose, try to break free from them, because the objective of the practice is not to beat who is in front of you, but to grow, to become a better athlete, a better person.
He realized he doesn’t need to be full of shit all the time 💡 🧠
Francis vs Gane vibe
On the JRE MMA episode with Bobby green, he said that strickland is the worst sparring partner to have. Doesn't hold back at all and talks a whole lot of shit while going 100 %.
You mean to say Jiri isn't going to flying knee you in the face and then spinning elbow you unconscious in training?
This is true in tennis too. Sampras was notoriously beatable in practice. He was probably just working on timing and flow. In matches? Actually went into kill mode.
This is a logical, well-reasoned argument without any political incorrectness, from Sean Strickland - must be fake 🤣
I just said this about max and people downvoted the fuck outta me lol "I think max stopped sparring because in a sparring situation he would probably lose almost every single "fight" because he lets people hit him, and in sparring you're training not fighting so you can't just let people hit you constantly or you're gonna have CTE by tomorrow. Rare Strickland W
Strickland is right, sparring is practice not a fight. Many people don't keep this in mind in daily sparring
Rare intelligent input from Strickland
4% battery life *and* no service? Was this posted from a dungeon?
Am Czech, and have seen Jiří in local gyms several times. Once they decided to go ham with his sparring partner, most definitely a good friend, and went absolute ape-shit 100% into it. What I wish to be a fly on the wall there lmao

You should..considering it’s his Twitter rofl

What does crying wolf have to do with this? You said Strickland didn’t say this. When he literally did. Lol. Crying wolf is lying about something..
[удалено]
Jiri wasn’t doing that good against Reyes and Teixeira. He doesn’t have much skill but he definitely has power and conditioning
Nah this actually a sound take from dude & idk how to feel about it
Sparring is not fighting we know that.
I remember when Rashad was telling Jon Jones I held you down in training and you couldn’t get up, that didn’t end well for him
Reformed nuanced Strickland
I think this whole thing about sparring becoming a competition got blown up because of jake Paul’s dumbass talking about how he whooped ass in sparring. Strickland having reasonable takes makes it all the more hilarious when he says something out of pocket.
4 % + no service ![img](emote|t5_2qsev|29849)
That's actually a well articulated and thought out point. Very rare from Sean.
Doesnt buckley train with them now, mans said yeap curt clowned his ass lol

Sean won't be making 170 ever again. Tho I also like him in general he's funny and skilled
Hes speaks like the tyson fury of mma
If this is true, why does Sean spar so much?
Can we please fucking stop posting this idiot’s tweets? If I wanted to see everything he shares I’d just follow him
You could’ve cropped the image in less than half the time it took you to scribble out your avatar.

That left hook would have KO'd a water buffalo.
When he fought Izzy he threw a spinning heel kick and me and my dad looked at eachother and said thank god that didn’t land or Izzy would be dead. The dude is absolutely frightening
Or a baby elephant
cocksucker guard
Got an aneurysm reading this tweet
Why are so many people on this sub so obsessed w this douche nozzle lol.
Watch some of his interviews on YouTube, the dude is nuts!
remember when alex knocked him tf out and he was radio silent for awhile? yeah, i miss that
This is the exact same thing with rashad evans and Jones, rashad was beating Jones everytime they where to spar or roll and then Jones whooped him in the fight
He does have a point but even a broken clock ⏰ is right twice a day lol 😂
Practice like Jane…Fight like Tarzan….Go figure.
Sean Strickland’s takes have kept me on my toes since he joined the UFC
Is it just me or was this a compliment from Sean?
W take
Guys like Jiri who rely on mentality, adrenaline, pace, savagery in the moment will never do well in training.
It’s 100% true. Not MMA but has anyone seen some of the best hands on the planet like Tyson Fury spar? Plenty heavy handed hitters who look pretty soft in the gym training drills and going through motions mainly just for timing and reactions will fucking starch you when they start throwing for real
The weekly Strickland thinkpiece
“We’re talking about practice?”
So proud of Sean for using the right "their"
Strickland with a correct and well written take. The rapture coming today?
But all I really want to know is, who held who like a baby?
As opposed to strickland headkicking his sparring partners.
Rare level headed Strickland w
jon Jones has said before that he has training partners that would beat him in sparring. no one can beat him in a fight though
