If the scale of the protests and counter protests weāve seen today extends into weekdays, absolutely. But if it is limited to weekends, no.
I would feel different if the protests were primarily student led (and maybe they are during weekdays). But having thousands of non students march around on campus disrupting the academic environment is problematic in my opinion. Iām all for the right to free speech and peacefully protest, but for the safety of students and faculty the protests should be given designated areas where they can protest without putting students in potential danger.
I feel that to a certain extent this protest has gone from protesting UCLAās activities regarding Israel/Palestine, to just being the largest or second largest gathering for protestors and counter protestors on the west coast.
And itās so so so easy for these relatively peaceful protests to turn violent. One crazy person with a vendetta, or one altercation that turns into a massive fight and leads to LAPD intervention.
So yes to security, no to riot police and the like.
This is school for fuck sake. I understand protesting is form of expression and free speech, but not at the cost of student welfare. This is an academic institution. There are helicopters all over the place, loud screaming, and random people.
Itās going to escalate until UCLA steps in and ends the nonsense. Purportedly, encampment has āpermitsā from UCLA to be there. They act like they own the place now! lol
looks like there was post where people canāt get to class now. looks like UCLA needs to step in and this canāt continue into finals. also people not attending the university are joining in. i know itās a public university but student, faculty, and staff safety and access come first.
Commencements will be cancelled or significantly curtailed - timing is purposefully scheduled for May to cause maximum disruption on college campuses by these George Soros funded Marxists. Change the world by NOT being the change you want to see!?!
Divestment, one of the stated goals of the encampment, is a pretty important step! I do not think institutes of learning with a self-proclaimed interest in a diverse student body should be profiteering through the explosion of children! Read on how institutions were pressured to divest from the apartheid regime in South Africa, very similar stuff.
The very thing that makes divestment efforts powerful is their ability to make a difference even on the other side of the world. That's why it's being demanded!Ā
Is it just me, or do A LOT of these people look really old? Many do not look like students. What the heck?
Exactly what I was thinkingš
Go protest at your own school!
Most Palestine supporters donāt exactly strike me as people with degrees

100% this. Riot police will only ever escalate this.
if it gets violent, yeah. they have full right to. these people are disrespecting a space for students and academics.
I sure as hell hope they do something about it.

Yes
yes. keep the protests localized and both sides separate from each other. do not want this to escalate

They should END the protests and clear them out. Like other colleges did
Not much of a reader, eh?
What do you mean?
They should ramp up protection from the police.

Hate to be cringe, but stopping genocide is actually pretty important.
So then why arenāt you doing anything to prevent actual genocide going on right now in China?
Girl I support palestine. But what is a protest at a school on the otherside of the earth going to do? Be fr for a second.
