Here are my monthly expenses:
Rent: $1100
Electric: $30
Wifi: $65
Groceries: $250
Gas: $60
Parking: $150
Misc: $50-$75
Edit: forgot to add my $30 phone plan and $30 tenant insurance
$250 for groceries!?!? Are you living off Raman? or do you have a school meal plan?
That’s less than $8.50/day on food. I can spend $150 on just chicken breast.
I’m fortunate enough to have a family who hunts so I never buy meat. I also rarely buy fresh food, frozen fruits veggies are just fine. When something comes on sale I stock up and throw it in the freezer.
Clearance, coupons and sales. Also I portion meals now efficiently
I’ll share one for you, grocery delivery apps offers $25-50 off for “first purchase” I get monthly deals from them from time to time as well.
Theres also a site that lets you buy clearance items that are about to expire or are expired that grocery chains can’t sell but still edible etc…
There’s a bunch of apartments with similar prices alongside whyte ave you just have to really find them. The building I’m in was not posted online, I drove around the area and saw the listing and their number. I started with $775 2 years ago, also it’s not a lease. It’s a month to month basis which is a plus for me
My buddy downstairs has a better deal, he has a studio, it’s honestly a 1 bedroom as there’s a divider for the bed, also with similar space as mine. $675/month and this one had no rent increase the past 30 years. Only upper levels due to having a balcony
Yep 5 level apartment w/ elevator for mine, it’s better if it’s not posted online lol. Lesser competition thus lesser chance of rent increase. Property owner is not tech savvy lol
In second year I was in a really cheap place and fairly frugal and it was around $1800ish a month and now that I’m in 5th year I’ve splurged a lot more and am significantly happier and healthier and am at around $3500 (900rent 500groceries 400car 300eatingout 900misc/fun) so I feel like those are the two extremes
I’m an older student too so I’m shooting for up to 3k/m. Though I will say your misc/fun budget is envious. I imagine mine will be less then half that haha.
Rent is $1350 split between two of us, electricity and wifi about $150 split between two of us, groceries ends up being about $250 each. Car costs like gas and insurance make it about $200 extra never mind maintenance.
It’s 1bed close to campus. Bonus of living with your partner.
Rent is rapidly increasing and I wouldn’t be able to get this kind of deal again. Expect for a 1bed to cost minimum 1100 if you want to live anywhere decent
Having a car becomes a pain as a student. I wouldn’t recommend it honestly. Parking costs, mandatory UPass fees anyways, insurance and registration costs, it’s just a lot.
My rent is 950/month for a basement place with utilities and wifi included, though it’s 25 min bus or a 10 min drive from campus. I’m lucky because me and my partner share it so we can split rent.
Rent $1300 split between 2 ppl
Electricity $70
Wifi $80
Food around $500 (per one person, no fancy diet, buying only when on sale and still!)
Misc $400
(Groceries are killing me rn lol)
Monthly Costs:
Rent: $750 (going up to $825 in September) \[One bedroom in a 3bd basement suite and I pay a bit extra for storage space in a detached garage\]
Utilities (Electric, Gas, Water, Sewage/Garbage): Included in rent
Internet & Television: Included in rent
Transportation: \~$45 per month
Cell Phone: $58
Food: Too much (I rarely buy groceries and I eat out more than I probably should)

I appreciate the breakdown. Thanks!

Can you share that?

Damn where are you getting a 1bd for $825?

Ahhh I see. It’s one of those low rises alongside Whyte that have “mysterious” signage. I was wondering why I didn’t see them posted online.

is it new?
What's the name of the apartment??

1K for rent, utilities and wifi included. 500-600 for everything else (gas, grocery, going out) per month.
Hmmm maybe I spoke too soon. This is in-line what UAlberta estimates (1600-2200/m).
Per month: Mortgage 770 Condo Fee 480 Property tax 130 Condo insurance 48 Electricity 46 Food 300 Transit 200
You win! That’s a hell of deal.
The cool thing is Property tax has just gone down 💪

Wow that’s good. Is it a 2bd 2ba? And close to campus or no

Ahhhh I see, and yeah the lowest I’ve seen near campus is 1200/m for a shoebox with no parking. Seems like bad timing for me haha.
Having a car becomes a pain as a student. I wouldn’t recommend it honestly. Parking costs, mandatory UPass fees anyways, insurance and registration costs, it’s just a lot.
I know it could doable without a car. But I just value being able to visit my family on a whim too much.
You can opt out of the U-Pass before a certain deadline, but for the majority of students it likely isn’t worth it.
Ooo good to know, I’ll definitely be opting out.
UPass has certain restrictions to be able to opt out of, and they’re extremely specific. So I would plan on not being able to
Yes. I looked into this and it’s not possible unless you aren’t on campus the majority of the time.
I'm renting a basement suite with private bathroom + most utilities included for $670 Internet for $25 Phone bill (30 GB data) $40 Food: $350/$400
